“If you say the word ‘okay’ one more time, I’m going to lose my fucking mind.”

I grin and look up at those dark eyes staring back at me. “Okay.”

Knight lets out a heavy sigh, and I adjust myself as he reaches for the water on the bedside table and brings the straw to my lips. “Drink,” he demands.

I know better than to say no, and I quickly open my mouth, trying to catch the straw with my tongue. The moment the cool water hits the back of my throat, the sweetest relief fills my body. I didn’t realize how much I needed that, but of course Knight did.

After taking a few more sips, he settles the water back on the side table, and I try to make myself comfortable in bed, but it’s easier said than done. Being fresh out of surgery is never anybody’s favorite pastime. It’s uncomfortable, and every slight movement makes me want to scream. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve got me on some strong pain meds, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t feel the agony my body has suffered through.

An uncomfortable little grunt tears from the back of my throat as I adjust myself some more, and the moment I finally find a position that doesn’t leave me wanting to strangle something, I reach up to the neckline of my hospital gown and lift. Peering down under the fabric, I take a good look at the bandaging around my waist. It doesn’t look great, and the moment I’m cleared for it, my ass will be in the shower, scrubbing every inch of dried blood from my body while Knight no doubt hovers close by, making sure my stupid ass doesn’t topple over.

I let out a breathy sigh, and just as I go to drop the cheap fabric of my hospital gown back into place, the lack of sparkliness occurs to me. “Whoa,” I say, feeling violated. “Someone took out my nipple piercings.”

Knight chuckles, and as he jostles around beside me, I glance over at him. I watch as he pulls a little plastic baggie from his pocket, holding it up between his fingers as though it holds the answers to the world’s most feared questions. “Got ’em right here,” he tells me. “But if you need somebody to help you put them back in, I’m your man.”

I scoff and elbow him right in the ribs. “Filthy pervert.”

Knight shrugs, not bothering to deny it.

“So, what are we looking at?” I ask, finally ready to hear what I’ve been avoiding since the moment I woke up. “Just a flesh wound? Will I be out of here in a few hours, or are we looking at something a little more serious?”

“Little more serious, doll,” he tells me. “It was deep.”

“Fuck.” I let out a frustrated sigh before placing my hand over the wound again and mentally going over my anatomy. “Intestine?” I ask, already trying to work out what recovery could look like for that.

“Oooh, close,” he says. “But since when do you accept only one grand prize when there’s more on the table? After all, I know how you love a good two-for-one deal.”

“Fuck. Really?” I ask, my eyes widening in horror. “Kidney as well?”

“Ding. Ding. Ding. You got it, doll,” he says. “You’re lucky to be alive, but Dr. Levine worked her magic. She came and checked on you a little while ago and mentioned the punctures to your intestine and kidney were easy fixes. She expects you to make a full recovery.”

“Yeah,” I scoff. “But in how long? Two weeks? Two months?” Knight cringes, and I groan. “Fuuuck.”

“It’s not so bad. You get to spend all that time with me,” he says with a stupid smirk. “You know I’m a fucking catch, right?”

I roll my eyes. “Oh, you’re a catch, alright.”

A soft knock sounds at the door, and I glance up to find Nurse Celia hovering in the doorway, a scowl across her pretty face. “I thought I told you that I didn’t want to see you back here,” she says, reminding me of the fond times we shared after I was jumped by the temp night janitor and his douchebag friends.

Celia has always been a bit of a hard-ass, and she has built a reputation among the doctors for not being the nurse who should be fucked with, but it’s all an act. To her patients, she’s a completely different person, and I can’t help but love that about her.

“I tried, but I missed you too much,” I tell Celia, watching as she strides into the room, all while giving Knight a hard stare for being in my bed. But if she knows what’s good for her, she’ll keep her thoughts on the topic to herself. After all, I don’t see Knight moving away from my side any time soon, and he’ll fight whoever he has to fight to ensure that that happens.
