Once Sam and the boys returned with the food, we feasted, and then after dinner, Sam and Harper helped Hannah decorate the Yule candles, and I had Jake string the lights on the porch as I sat out there, bundled up, and directed him. When everyone came outside, he got lots of compliments on his zigzag technique. We decided on a Lord of the Rings marathon, as long as we could fast-forward through the Ent parts in the second movie. Since the only purist was Kola, and the vote was five to one, he didn’t stand a chance.
Sitting there hours later, Jake and Hannah on the floor, Harper beside me, Kola next to his father, and me fading in and out on Sam’s chest, I was as content as I ever remembered being, and so happy to be safe at home.
“When you go shopping for the food for Christmas, I’ll go with you,” Kola said with a yawn, leaning forward a bit so he could see me. “Uncle Dane’s right, you’re a trouble magnet.”
“It wasn’t your father’s fault,” Sam rumbled. “This time.”
One out of hundreds really wasn’t that bad.
