“I invited him,” I answer when Adam exits his car.
“Why the fuck would you do that?” Haidyn barks loud enough that Adam can hear.
“We need him,” I grind out, and a sour taste instantly fills my mouth. “He’ll only be here a few minutes.” Then he’s out of my life for good.
Adam joins us by the graves, placing his hands in the front pockets of his jeans.
“Well, boys, this is your proof.” I direct my attention to the cop and detective.
“Proof of what?” the young cop asks, running the back of his hand across his chin to clean up the puke on his face.
“I was the one who killed Vivian.” Adam nods to the headless body lying on the tarp. “I’ve got her phone.” He holds it out to the detective. “It was on her at the cathedral. It has everything you need to prove Eve had nothing to do with the case.”
The man stares at it before he glances at me. “Phones can be tampered with.”
My teeth grind. This motherfucker…
“I—”
Holding up my hand, I silently cut off Adam. I step up to the detective, my chest bumping his. “Take the fucking phone, get in your car, and leave. Make whatever statement you need to make. Do whatever you need to fucking do to close this case without mentioning my wife’s name. She wasn’t involved and if you try to say she was, I’ll chop your fucking head off like the bitch behind me. The only difference is I’ll do it while you’re alive.” I’m done playing with these bastards and I’m no longer going to hide my wife. She’s going to live her life however she fucking wants. Eve did what she thought was right by calling the cops when she found the dead body in the cemetery and I won’t let them punish her for that.
His jaw sharpens and the young cop leans in, speaking softly into his ear. After a second, the detective reaches out and snatches the phone from Adam’s hand.
The cop nods to me. “Consider the case closed and Everett’s name cleared.”
“Get the fuck off the property,” I order, and they both turn and get into their car before exiting the gates.
“You think they’ll return?” Sin asks.
“No,” I answer. If they do, I’ll show them I’m a man of my word.
Silence falls over the cemetery, and I give Adam my back. It’s his fault Eve’s in this position. He could have told the police about Vivian the moment he was suspicious she had a twin. It could have saved us a lot of time. And I’m sure as fuck not going to thank him for showing up today when I needed him. It’s the least he could fucking do.
“Get rid of this fucking body,” I bark out, seeing the dead woman wearing my wife’s dress.
My cell vibrates in my pocket. I huff at the familiar number and answer. “You better have a good reason for calling me.”
Haidyn and I make our way up to the birdcage. I open my bedroom door but don’t see Eve inside. “She must be with Charlotte,” I tell Haidyn.
He opens his and enters. I walk in behind him to find my wife sitting on their bed petting a purring Muffin. You can see the hair flying with each stroke.
“Where’s Charlotte?” Haidyn asks.
“In the bathroom,” my wife answers.
He goes over and knocks on the door when he realizes it’s locked. “Everything okay?”
Charlotte opens it, giving him a smile. “Just had to use the restroom,” she assures him and pats his chest.
“Charlotte was showing me the backpack you got them for Muffin. That was so sweet.” Eve smiles at me.
“Oh yeah?” I look at Haidyn, and he narrows his eyes on me. “I thought so.” I never had my chance to get information from Charlotte about my girl, but it turns out I wouldn’t have gotten anything anyway. She never saw my wife. She had seen her identical twin there with LeAnne, and it was only that one time. LeAnne had to keep her from Charlotte because she didn’t want anyone to know that Eve or her twin existed. They were playing the long game and going to use her when needed.
“We take her for a walk at least once a day.” Charlotte beams. “Muffin loves it.” The cat meows in my wife’s hands as if agreeing.
“I hope you’re taking pictures,” I remind her, and Charlotte nods.
“I’d love to have a pet,” Eve says.
“Oh, really?” Haidyn arches a brow at me. “You should get a cat.” My smile drops. “They’re great.” He walks over and picks Muffin up from Eve’s arms. “She sleeps on my pillow every night.”
“Uh.” I scratch the side of my face, all of a sudden itchy and breaking out in hives just thinking about a hairy pussy sticking it’s littered-covered paws on my face while I sleep. “I don’t think—”
