He straightened, giving his head one decisive jerk as he did his pretending to be a grown-up routine. “Ready.”
Chipmunk wanted to say Daddy badly but he held himself back. Taking his hand, I kissed the side of his head. “Good.”
His family would’ve thought it weirder if I’d let him walk by himself, so I didn’t worry about holding him close to me as we snuck into the kitchen and grabbed the Oreos that might’ve been the only junk food in the entire house.
Even the carrot cake we’d been served at dinner had tasted…healthy.
It wasn’t bad but she’d been honest when she said it was sugar free. I had a feeling she’d left out a few more words to describe it, but I was looking forward to the cookies and Teddy knew it based on how hard he was having to work to hold back his giggles.
He managed to do a good job until we got back to his room, but as soon as the door was locked, they escaped. “They’re mine. She. I.”
Collapsing on the floor, he laughed and spread out like a snow angel. “I get Oreos.”
Ah.
The cookies were his.
“Does Miss Macy keep cookies here just for you?” That got his giggles going again but didn’t make him any bigger. He just nodded and giggled, looking relieved and ready to do anything to keep from having to be big. “I’m glad. They look good.”
Since it didn’t look like he was going to get off the floor anytime soon, I sat down beside him and made sure the cookies were in easy reach. “How about a bubble bath before we watch cartoons?”
I was glad I’d thoroughly packed when he sprang up and wiggled between my legs. “Bubbles?”
“Yep.” Giving him a quick peck, I nodded and smiled back at my excited boy. “I have bubbles and a few toys.”
“Daddy toy too?” He thought that made perfect sense as he quickly stood and grabbed my hands. “Come on, Daddy.”
Ugh.
I was too old for this up and down nonsense.
“Do you have something to show me?” I’d gotten a quick peek at his room earlier when we’d brought up our suitcases but the only thing that had stuck out at the time was how far away from his parents’ room it was.
That was perfect.
“Yes.” Getting even more excited, he giggled as I groaned and got up off the floor. “Silly Daddy.”
“Old Daddy. I’m ancient.” Hunching over, I pretended to be an old man as I slowly hobbled after him instead of running like he wanted. “Oh…slow down whippersnapper.”
That had the giggles coming back in full force but it gave me time to take in the large room as we made our way to his bathroom. It was so different than the rest of the house, it was almost like it was a guest room no one ever used.
Where the rest of the house was filled with warm colors and things like crystals and candles literally on every surface, Teddy’s room was plain and there wasn’t a sign of Chipmunk anywhere. But with a housekeeper and a nosy mother, I could understand why he kept that as private as he could.
We were definitely going to need a playroom that locked.
“Daddy got bubbles?” As he bounced into the bathroom, he looked around and pointed to the bottles in the shower that looked like shampoo and bodywash. “I got ’poo.”
My dry expression and raised eyebrow got more laughter from him. “I got ’poo.”
And that was hilarious.
“Yes, I brought bubble bath and no ’poo will be necessary.” That had him laughing so hard he sat on the edge of the tub that was big enough for a whole fleet of bubbles to go sailing in it. “Is this the kind of tub we need in our house?”
He nodded and patted the tub, laughter forgotten with the distraction. “Yes. Share.”
It was certainly sharing sized.
“Alright, bubbles and toys and then cookies and cartoons.” It was definitely going to be more relaxing than our afternoon had been so far, even if it’d gone fairly well. “Sound like a plan?”
“Yes.” Hopping up, he threw his arms around me and gave me a smacky kiss on the cheek. “Cuddles too.”
That made me chuckle. “You had to sit far away tonight. I’m not used to that.”
He was always nearly on top of me, so sitting that far apart had been odd. Chipmunk agreed based on his dramatic groan and the way he collapsed into me. “Far, Daddy. No. No. No.”
“We’ll get lots of cuddling tonight.” And I’d do better at making sure we got alone time in the afternoon at some point too. “How about we tell them we need to meditate or something that sounds more grown-up than taking a nap? But we’ll cuddle and take a nap.”
His excited sound and the hug I got said he approved even before he gave me words and another cheek kiss. “Naps. Yes, Daddy. Naps.”
