“Venom is a good guy and trust me on this, you want him as your friend, not your enemy.”
“He wants Morwenna.”
“And if she decides to take him, you’re going to have to accept that decision.”
“Dad, come on, she’s my wife, that has got to be—”
“Nearly eighteen months now since she walked out on you, and she has been trying to divorce you for over a year,” Maverick said.
“What are you trying to say?”
“Your marriage is as good as over. Morwenna wants out. The least you could do is give her that.”
Chapter Nine
“You’re not going to smile?” Morwenna asked.
“What is there to smile about? We’re surrounded by a bunch of teenagers.” Venom had this sneer on his face, and she couldn’t help but laugh. “What are you laughing about?”
“I imagine that is the way most pirates looked, all snarly and moody. It’s funny.”
“I’m not even trying to be funny.”
Morwenna let out a scream as a skeleton jumped out at her and screamed. She threw herself into Venom’s arms, and he banded an arm around her.
“Okay,” she said, pointing toward the skeleton. “That one did make me panic. I was not expecting that.” She let out another nervous laugh. “Did you see that coming?”
“Not at all.”
However, she knew he hadn’t been startled by it, and she merely rolled her eyes. There was no point in trying to get him to enjoy it.
Rather than let him pull away, she kept his hand banded firmly around her waist. Coming to the haunted school was not exactly the best idea she had. Venom helped her leave buckets of candy all around the main town, and she had placed them on street corners as well.
Her Halloween blog countdown was a huge success, and she’d gotten a lot of amazing reviews on her recipes, which was always a lot of fun. So far, everything was going well, apart from her trying to set Venom up with another woman. He didn’t make it easy for her, and she felt so guilty, because part of her was glad about that. What kind of friend was she, to be glad he didn’t want to date anyone? She should be encouraging him, rather than allowing him to steer clear of the dating scene.
They made it through the scary school, and she stepped outside, pulling away from his hands, and she brushed an arm across her brow. “Okay, so that wasn’t fun.” She pressed her hands to either side of her waist. “Is there anything else you’d like to do?”
“Go home?” he asked.
She chuckled.
“Isn’t there a party at the club?”
Venom nodded his head. “Bolt’s going to be there.”
“Oh,” she said, pursing her lips. “Of course he is. Do you want to go?”
“What do you want to do?”
They’d gotten all dressed up, and she’d even made sure to wear short sleeves, to show off her ink, but right now she was exhausted.
“I want to go home and pig out on candy. That’s so boring, though.”
“It sounds like a lot of fun to me,” he said.
“Really?”
“Home, comfy clothes, food, sounds great.” He counted them off one by one with his fingers and she couldn’t help but smile.
“Let’s go.” She looped her arm with his, and then they made their way out of the school grounds, only to come face to face with Bolt, along with a couple of the other guys from the club.
“Morwenna,” he said.
“Bolt.”
“I didn’t realize you wanted to come to this thing,” Bolt said.
“I’ve always wanted to come but you’ve never asked and you always had me doing other things.” She brushed some of her hair off her face.
Bolt looked toward Venom, and then to her, his gaze on where her arm was linked with Venom’s.
“Can I talk to you?” he asked.
“Have you signed the divorce papers?”
“I want to talk to you about that,” he said.
She was not interested in spending any alone time with him, but if he needed some clarity on the papers, she was more than happy to give it to him.
“You’ll wait for me?” she asked.
Venom nodded and pulled away. The moment she lost contact with him, she missed his touch.
The other guys had headed into the school, leaving her alone with Bolt. “What’s up?” she asked.
“Uh, how have you been?”
“Bolt, I’m not here to make small talk with you. I want to go home, and you asked to talk about the divorce papers.”
“Look, I know you want me to sign them, but please, is there...” He stopped talking and looked down at her arm. “Is that real?” he asked, reaching for her arm that had the ink.
He wrapped his fingers around her wrist, and she tensed up. “Bolt!”
“It is, isn’t it? What the fuck did I say about ink? That you didn’t need to get it.”
“This has nothing to do with you.”
“I suppose you’re also fucking him. What is it? You want to go the full round on being a slut, is that it?” he asked.
