Prologue
“Marry me,” Casey Richards asked.
Morwenna looked toward her long-term boyfriend and shook her head. “We can’t do that.”
“We don’t know if you’re pregnant or not, and I don’t want you to think I’m only marrying for the baby.” He pressed a hand to her stomach. “I love you, Wen. Always have, since we were babies. You know this.”
She rubbed at her temple, and the truth was, at sixteen, she was freaking out. Skipped periods were not usually her thing. She never skipped a period. She was regular like clockwork.
“You’re crazy. There is no way we can get married,” Morwenna said.
Casey smiled. “Of course there is. Our parents have no control over what we do or don’t do. We’re the ones in control, and we’ve got to think of our kid.”
“Casey, we don’t even know if we’re pregnant. Not for real.”
“Look, I didn’t want to scare you, okay, because I figured it was our first time, and you shouldn’t be worried, but the condom broke. It was a pretty old condom.”
“It broke?”
“Yeah, it broke, so there is a chance you might be ... you know ... pregnant.”
She felt that panic and fear. “We’re sixteen years old.”
“And we’ve both got our parents. I know it sounds insane, but you and I can do this. We’ve got each other’s backs, Wen. It is how it has always been. You and me against the world. We’ve got this.”
She looked into his eyes and felt a little sick. Her mother had asked her to be patient, to wait to have kids. To have a life of her own before she settled down. But she loved Casey. She had loved him for a lifetime already. She couldn’t imagine her life with anyone else.
Even as she felt a little sick, because she knew their parents were going to freak out, and that was okay, she knew there was no one else she wanted to be with. There was just Casey Richards, the love of her life.
Casey was her everything, and nothing was ever going to change that.
Chapter One
Nine Years Later
Silence—just what Morwenna needed.
Although she couldn’t get the image out of her head. All she wanted to do was drop off Casey’s present, or Bolt, as she now must refer to him. He did all his prospecting, and now he was a respectable member of the club. She couldn’t help but wonder how many people knew he was cheating. Were they laughing at her?
She glanced down at her ring, but the image before her got a little too blurry. She felt sick to her stomach and closed her eyes, even as her phone buzzed. Every now and then, the sounds of birds singing filled the air, and it was beautiful. This is why she came here, to think and be alone. It was the one place no one was ever able to find. Sure, it was near the lake, but this was filled with boulders and rocks, where the chance of death was a hundred percent guaranteed. This way, no stupid kids or teenagers would attempt any daredevil stunts. There was no safe place to land.
She sat on the boulder, her feet dangling in the water. She found this place many years ago, when she needed to think.
Nine years ago, after she had sex with her longtime friend and boyfriend, she thought she was pregnant. She had never said anything, but Casey had promised he wore a condom. Then he told her the condom had broken. She’d been freaking out thinking she was pregnant at sixteen. Casey offered to marry her, and even though their parents were nervous for them, they didn’t stop them. They had a proper church wedding. Her own father, who was a former soldier, asked if she wanted to run away. Every single time, she told everyone she loved Casey and wanted to get married.
She squeezed her eyes closed because her husband cheating on her just didn’t seem to ... it wasn’t something she could even grasp right now. Yet, she’d seen him with Star, one of the most notorious club women. She overheard Star bragging about all the men she had been with. She was also talking about getting a tattoo so she could celebrate being with nearly the full house.
