Only she had disappeared.
Which was suspicious.
“We don’t have any footage from in the offices, but we do have the ones from the hallways. It was the niece. She let them in a service door. They were dressed as maintenance and wheeling covered carts. They must have wheeled them out in those carts and the niece let them back out. Then she hid in the storage room and pretended to be traumatised.”
That fucking bitch.
“I want her found.”
“That’s the good part. My guy took the footage to the hospital to show Oliver, and he was able to help them find her. They also showed the cops. She was picked up about an hour ago in one of the houses that her parents left her. Dumb bitch.”
Good. That was one thing off his plate.
He’d let the cops deal with her for the moment. But if she was let off too lightly, then he was going to step in and fucking ruin her.
“I don’t like what’s happening here,” he said. “Too many people know we’re here.”
“Fucking agree,” Hunter grunted out. “We’re amassing a small fucking army out there but all that is going to do is get people killed. We have to get in and get them out quickly. Go fucking stealth.”
“Good. We agree on that too. You’re with me?”
“I’m fucking with you, man. Let’s go hunting.”
The door to the bedroom opened and fear filled her as she spied a man walking toward her.
Aadan had carried her in here, laying her on the bed, then, proving that he didn’t trust her, he’d tied her wrists with a soft rope and attached them to the wooden bedpost.
He’d told her he’d be back later to help her to the bathroom. But how long had passed? Had she fallen asleep? She must have as it seemed to be dark out now.
The man moved forward, but stuck to the shadows so she couldn’t see his face. This guy was bigger than Aadan and fear shot through her making her heart race.
Who was he?
“You should have stayed away. I helped you once, and I can’t help you again.”
Who was this guy? What did he mean, he’d helped her once?
Her mind raced. Someone had to have told those men to take her to the airport? Could it have been this guy . . . but who would they take orders from? Other than Aadan, that is.
Suddenly it clicked and she couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought of it before.
“Are you the General?”
She’d never actually met him before. Only heard him talked about in harsh whispers. Heck, she hadn’t even been sure that he lived here.
“Yes, I am.”
“And you helped me last time? Why?” she asked.
“Aadan shouldn’t have brought you here. It was a big mistake. Men like us don’t have weaknesses. It will get us killed. You were his weakness. But more than that, you were attention we didn’t need. An American going missing? Too much attention. Especially a young, beautiful woman. So I sent him away, paid to have him incarcerated for a while and then I got rid of you.”
Holy shit.
He’d had his own man locked up just so she could get a clean break? Why hadn’t he just killed her? Because of some bad attention? Didn’t he already have that?
“It wasn’t just because of you,” he explained. “I needed Aadan out of the way for a while. He tends to be . . . impulsive. Case in point, you. He wants to marry you. That’s what his big surprise is, he has a priest coming tomorrow. That isn’t happening, though. Unfortunately, Aadan is losing his grip on reality. In hindsight, I should have had you suffer an ‘accident’. What can I say? Sometimes I make poor decisions. Like taking my half-brother in. It made me reluctant to get rid of him even though he’s become a loose cannon. But sometimes . . . you just do what you have to do. He’s pushed my hand now. The question is what to do about you and the man in the dungeon?”
What? Tyler was in the dungeon? And was he saying that Aadan was his half-brother? And that he was going to . . . to kill him?
Caren licked her dry lips. “You could just help us leave? I mean . . . you wouldn’t want to draw America’s ire, right?”
“Would they care that much about two citizens?” he asked. “I made the mistake once of not getting rid of you permanently.”
“My boyfriend would care. A lot. He’s also Tyler’s brother, the guy in the dungeon. He has a lot of contacts overseas. And the FBI and Interpol are looking for you.”
“Yes, I’m aware,” he said dryly.
“So you should just let us go. After all, I don’t know what you look like. Wouldn’t it be easier to let us go rather than risk my man’s ire? He knows powerful people.”
