Finally, she drew away from him, but she knew she wasn’t going to sleep. She attempted to climb out of bed, but he wrapped an arm around her.

“Where are you going?”

“To take a shower.” Her skin was itching. She felt dirty and . . . wrong.

“Because you’re sweaty from the nightmare or because you feel dirty?”

“B-both?” she said.

“You can have one shower. With me. Then it’s back to bed.”

Twenty minutes later, they were back in bed but she still didn’t feel settled. Was she hungry? No. Should she make sure that Travis had . . . no!

“What do you need, baby? What would make you feel better that doesn’t involve you scrubbing your skin raw or shoving food into every drawer?”

She winced and thought about that. Would anything make her feel better? Him taking charge would. But it was after two in the morning and he needed sleep.

“Can I . . . um . . . can I suck your cock?”

There was a beat of silence and she winced. Was he going to think she was an idiot?

“Go for it, baby.”

She slid down the bed until she was fully immersed under the covers. Reaching out, she wrapped her hand around his cock. He always slept naked, which made it easier for her to get access. Then she took him slowly into her mouth and sucked. As she sucked, he grew harder but that didn’t bother her.

This wasn’t about sex or pleasure.

It was comfort.

And it was exactly what she needed for her body and mind to relax. He placed a hand on the back of her head, holding her steady and Caren just let herself drift.

“Whoever heard of a fucking Friday afternoon protest?” Travis grumbled as he grabbed his keys and phone.

Fuck. Traffic was going to be a nightmare. He probably should have left half an hour ago. The protest was happening close to Hyde Park. He was meant to be meeting Tyler and Caren four blocks away from the protest.

“You better go, bossman,” Alexa called out. “You’re gonna be late.”

“I know, I know.” He wished he’d been able to convince Caren not to go today, but she’d said she felt like she was going crazy without some sort of purpose.

He really didn’t know why her purpose couldn’t be to love him.

Seemed pretty simple.

“Um, Travis?”

He glanced up at Rory. He quickly wiped the frown off his face. “Everything okay, sweetheart?”

“Not really. There’re a man and woman here. They say they work for Interpol.”

“Actually, I work for Interpol,” a woman said, stepping up behind Rory. “McCallum here works for the FBI.”

“I’m about to head out,” Travis told them.

“We really need to speak to you,” the woman said. “Alone.”

“Travis?” Rory asked.

“Rory, can you contact Tyler and tell him I won’t make it. Ask Gable to meet them instead. Then get Jace to come and get you. Alexa?” he called out. “Maybe you better come in here.”

“Coming,” Alexa said, skipping over. She looked McCallum up and down. “Hellooo handsome. I don’t suppose you have an urge to bend the rules while still upholding them?”

“What?” McCallum said.

“Come in,” Travis said as he strode out of his office. “And get out your IDs.”

Jace was leaning over Rory at her desk. He glanced up with a frown. “You good?”

“Yep. Clear everyone out. Take Rory home. Gable’s gone?”

“Yep. He and Tyler have her. The others are still on jobs.”

Good.

He walked back into the office. “What’s this all about?”

38

“I’m gonna tell on you,” Tyler sang as they drove home after the protest. Well, the protest was still going, but it had tapered off and she was exhausted.

Tyler had finally called an end when he’d seen her sway from exhaustion.

She was out of practice. She used to be able to wait for hours for that perfect shot. To walk for miles and miles. And under horrible conditions.

“Why would you tell on me?” She was sitting in the back while Gable drove and Tyler sat in the passenger seat.

She wondered what had happened to Travis. Gable had just said some work stuff came up, but she hadn’t heard from him, despite sending him a couple of messages.

Hopefully everything was all right because it wasn’t like him to not respond..

“Because you were naughty.”

“I was not!”

She totally was. But she wasn’t going to admit it. That would be crazy. Never admit when you broke the rules.

“You were supposed to keep a distance from the protest, not go running off into the middle of the crowd. Without your bodyguards.”

“You deserve the spanking you’re gonna get,” Gable told her.

“Hey! That’s not nice. I don’t deserve a spanking.”

She probably did. She had broken the rules and Travis was going to be furious.

Monkey bollocks.

“What would it take to keep this between the three of us?” she asked.

Gable made a scoffing noise. “There’s nothing. I like my job. And I enjoy my balls being attached to my body.”
