He nods. “I could.”
“Have you ever? Attacked anyone, I mean?”
He hesitates. “Not yet.”
I suck in a breath as I consider his meaning. “You want to. You want to tear Mitchel apart limb from limb.”
“Yes, Little love. I do. That’s not an inclination I have because I’m a shifter. Even a human man would want to seek revenge on anyone who treated their mate the way he treated you.”
I swallow. “I’m not sure how I feel about you going after him, Navin. He’s not worth it. What if you get in trouble?”
He sets his fork down and faces me. “Brea, I won’t get into any trouble. I promise. Mitchel is a bad man. He has to be stopped. Do you want him to traffic other women?”
My eyes widen. I hadn’t thought about that. “No.”
“Do you want me to call the police, show them your clothes from his attack, have him arrested? You’d spend months, if not years, dealing with the legal battle to get him convicted and put in prison.”
I shake my head slowly. I’d hoped it might be enough that he wouldn’t ever find out I survived, so he wouldn’t come after me again. But I hadn’t considered the fact that he would take another woman and sell her. He’s probably done it many times and will continue to do so unless he’s stopped.
“What are you going to do?” I ask.
“I’m not sure yet, Little love, but I don’t want you to worry about it. I’ll take care of Mitchel.”
“What about my brothers?” I whisper.
“Them, too, Brea. Everyone involved in kidnapping you to sell for sex needs to be stopped. I don’t care about the reason or how involved they were. They will all be punished.”
Daddy uncuffs my wrists and hands me the sippy cup. “Drink your juice,” he demands.
I take it from him and do as I’m told. I suspect this will become my new normal—being an obedient Little girl. It’s as though I’m compelled to do what he orders. I can’t help myself. I want to please him. It feels good. I like his praise, and I like how it makes me feel all warm and tingly when he’s pleased.
I’m worried about his plans for the men who trafficked me, though. Oddly I don’t care a bit what happens to my brothers. Fuck them. They’re dead to me. They were on thin ice before they pulled this stunt. I stopped caring altogether about what happens to them the moment they kidnapped me.
I don’t even care if everyone involved dies. But I do care if Navin gets in trouble for their demise.
He leaves me to ponder this depressing subject while he cleans the kitchen, and then he quietly unfastens me, sets my empty cup aside, and lifts me into his arms. He carries me to the bedroom and sits on the edge of the bed.
I’m wrapped around him, my wet panties pressing against his abs. I don’t think my panties will ever be dry again. I’ll be forever aroused.
“Shifters are stealthy, Little love,” he tells me as though he read my mind and my concerns. “We’re very careful to never be implicated in anything that may happen to bad people. And we never remove anyone from society who doesn’t fully deserve it. Think of us as fringe vigilantes. We do humans a favor from time to time, but we always make it look like the bad guys did it to themselves.”
“Okay.” He seems confident. I hope he knows what he’s doing. “Do shifters, uh, kill people often?”
“Not often. No. We don’t let ourselves get involved in other people’s problems in order to improve the overall good of humanity. I’m not a fictional super hero.”
I giggle because the visual is kind of funny. “But you could be. Collectively as a species, you could run around saving the day for all kinds of people.”
“I suppose. But we have no interest in doing that. We want to live our lives. We prefer to remain slightly off the grid where we don’t have to interact with others all the time. Our ambition for many years has been to find mates. It’s lonely living without a human at our sides.”
That makes sense.
Daddy continues, “We have unusual powers, Brea. They aren’t as important when we’re dealing directly with the human population, but we have the power to block our scent from others. We can even convince people they haven’t seen us at all.”
I gasp. “You can become invisible?”
He chuckles. “Not exactly. It’s more like an ability to control other people’s minds. Make them not see us right in front of them if we need. Humans aren’t able to scent a lion shifter in the first place, so that doesn’t matter. But it does come in handy if we encounter another group of shifters. We can block our presence from wolves and bears so they have no idea we’re in the vicinity.”
