“Should I tell your parents about this?”
“My property is my business, but you can do what you like to get them into the city next week. I will be fine, but they might be angry with you for not saying something.
“However, they are not to interfere with my affairs. You, Maldonado, and I are to be the only ones on these visits; no one else. It has to look like it’s only the three of us. No exceptions. No one else can be spotted,” I say.
With that, I turn to leave so I can change out of my pajamas into my street clothes. I’m beginning to see the whole picture. This isn’t about Onyx. She is just a casualty of something much bigger.
As I get to the threshold to head upstairs, Uncle Czar’s voice reaches my ears. “LaSalle, listen, I know this probably isn’t a good time, but we need to talk.
“Something is about to go down. I’ll have the kid’s back, but I get the feeling this is going to be bigger than the little shit he’s been up to.”
I grin. Uncle Czar has no idea. It will be fine. It’s already done.
CHAPTER 28
Home Invasion
Sammy
“Wait here for me,” I say to Maldonado as he pulls up in front of my destination.
“You sure, kid?”
“Yes, I’m certain. I will text you if I’m in need.”
“All right.”
I step from the car, taking my bags with me. There are items I will need to leave here when I depart. I have more than one purpose here tonight.
First, I slip on my backpack and then I place my duffel bag in my left hand. Circling the building, I find the way I plan to enter undetected. The doorman will present a challenge, so I’ll be going up the fire escape. Nodding my head at the plan, I look around to make sure I’m not being watched.
The alley is empty and quiet except for the sounds coming in from the cars on the main street and the people on the sidewalks making their way through the city. Seeing no one has turned their attention to this alley, I start making my way up.
First, I toss my duffel bag onto the lid of the dumpster. Then I climb up onto it. From up here, I can reach the ladder to the fire escape. Gently, I pull it down, trying to keep it as quiet as I can.
Once it’s down, I grab my other bag and start up. This will take a while as Miss Lovie is on the top floor. I move up swiftly, not fearing the height.
When I make it to her window, I take my backpack off my back and pull out my kit. Once I have it, I place my backpack back on, then open the kit and get the tools I need. I run my hand along the sill and then the joints of the window.
This will be simple. Quickly, I pop the window open and lift it quietly. I then slide inside and close the window back, shutting out all the noise from the busy street below.
Once inside Miss Lovie’s apartment, I move to her couch. Stealthily, I take a seat and set my bags down on the floor by my feet. I’ve come here for a specific reason.
She and I need to talk. Something has changed once again and this time it’s something that’s bringing me to the front. This is five years earlier than it should be.
While in California, I saw something about the year when I’ll turn sixteen. There will be someone I take off the board. Someone who’s been hiding from Dad.
That is when the blood begins to run. However, this change is going to force me to start making examples. I need to shut this down now so it doesn’t continue causing trouble. I have seen that these people think I’m an easy target.
It has gotten out that LaSalle Locatelli’s has a son on the spectrum. To them, my father’s oldest son is a dud. They can keep thinking that if they want.
I will show them who I am. First, I need to handle some business here. I’ve come to see the specialist.
“Sammy?”
My cheeks blush when Lovie turns the corner with her gun aimed at me. I quickly hold my hands up over my face in front of my eyes. This I wasn’t expecting.
“Don’t shoot. Yes, it is me, Sammy. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
“Shit, kid. I almost blew your head off. What are you doing here? Do your parents know where you are?”
I can’t look at her. My cheeks won’t stop burning. My vision did not show me this.
I was not prepared. Like with Uncle Micheal and Auntie Sim, I didn’t see what I was walking into. I didn’t know she would be in her panties and bra.
