“Don’t comment,” Eden said. “I’m starving, and although I’ve been willing to help all day, no one wants my help.” She wrinkled her nose. “It’s like I’m a social leper.”
“You’re pregnant and the whole town has your back.”
“That’s why I got the hot dog and just decided to pout while eating it.” Eden held it up. “Do you want a bite?”
“You know I’m not a hot dog girl.”
“I’m not either but it’s food and I can’t be choosy when I’m eating for two.” She finished off the last of the hot dog in less than three bites. “What’s up?”
“Nothing, I don’t think. Charlotte told me she already knew about me and Doc,” Maeve said.
“And?”
“She gave us her blessing.”
“And that’s a problem?”
Maeve shrugged. “His ex-wife is happy. His daughter is happy. Don’t you think a lot of things are falling into place and it’s making a lot of people happy?”
“You’re a good person, Maeve. People want to see you happy. Look at all you’ve done for everyone else. I’ve never seen you as happy since you and Doc got together. You smile a lot more, and you’re happy. You can’t deny that.”
She was happier. “I guess I’m used to something bad happening.” She shrugged. “I’m so tired. It has been a long day.”
“How did Charlotte hold up?” Eden asked.
“She was amazing. I can’t believe I’ve done this so many times without her. She is a natural.”
“Look at that, Stepmommy already singing her praise.”
Maeve groaned. “Don’t do that. Please.”
“Hey, beautiful,” Razor said, and in his hand was a chocolate-ringed donut that made Eden’s eyes light up.
“You’re not helping my diet,” Eden said.
“Babe, you’re pregnant, you’re not going on any kind of diet, and don’t even think of asking me to chain the cupboards closed. We both know by tomorrow morning, you’ll be throwing this up with your morning sickness.”
Maeve smiled at the two. It was good to see her sister so happy. “What are you two planning for the rest of the night?”
“I’m going to take her home, watch a movie, possibly massage her feet,” Razor said.
Eden let out a sigh, and it sounded almost orgasmic. “He makes everything sound so much better.”
Maeve glanced across the field and spotted Doc making his way toward her. “I better let you two go. I won’t be back tonight. I’m going to take Doc out for the evening.” She was going to take him back to his clubhouse so they could have some privacy. She didn’t mind being at home with Razor and Eden, but privacy was a must, and they gave her and Doc plenty of it, so she didn’t mind reciprocating.
Eden gave her a quick one-armed hug, as there was no way she was clearly letting go of the hot dog, not that she would ask her to. Kissing her sister’s cheek, she made her way toward Doc, and he put his arms around her and pulled her in for a hug, kissing her on the lips.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
“Eden and Razor are going back to the house, and I thought we could give them some privacy.”
He winked at her. “I like the way you think.”
They didn’t go immediately back to the house, but instead took several turns around the fair, enjoying each other’s company. It was good to just hang out with him, not caring who saw them. He’d gotten her some cotton candy, and they were sitting on one of the benches, when she told him what Charlotte said to her.
“We’ve got my daughter’s blessing.”
She nodded. “We’re both all good.”
He gripped the back of her neck and pulled her in close. “How does that make you feel?”
“It makes it feel good, don’t you think?” she asked.
“I think you’re an incredible woman, and I’m a lucky guy.”
They finished their cotton candy, and Doc drove them back to the clubhouse. He was not surprised to see a party in full swing. Several men and women were outside, some in different stages of undress, and she was pretty sure she caught sight of some of them having sex outside. That was their prerogative.
They finally made it to Doc’s room without anyone stopping them, and it was a relief, because right now, all she wanted was to be alone with him.
Doc closed and locked the door, and Maeve turned to look at him. There was a glint in his eyes, and she felt how wet she got from just that one look, which took her completely by surprise.
“Take off your clothes.”
He was the master of her. She was to do as he told her.
Maeve wriggled out of her clothes in anticipation for what was to come.

All day, Doc had watched Maeve. He rarely left the stand where she worked. She was so good with kids, and he loved the way she worked with Charlotte as well. She was so patient with her, which was exactly what he wanted. The two women made a good team.
