A foreboding silhouette in the middle of his room.
Demon or angel, I couldn’t tell.
He let his gaze travel over my panting, quivering form.
That hot, unrelenting gaze had me pressing my thighs together, searching for friction.
I couldn’t fathom that I was doing it. That this man had the power to evoke this reaction in me.
Pare me down to nothing but a needy mess in the middle of his bed.
Then one second later, the intensity shifted, and he reached down and grabbed the bag that he had left on the floor.
Disoriented, I slowly pushed up to sitting.
His expression that only moments ago had brimmed with possession twisted into a cruel smirk. “Guess it’s a good thing I brought you a present.”
He dumped the bag upside down and poured the contents onto the foot of the bed.
My jaw basically hit the floor.
You could call it affronted disbelief.
It was a giant vibrator, my taunt from earlier coming back to bite me in the ass.
He leaned forward like a beast who could so easily strike me dead.
But I saw it…I saw the way he fisted the comforter as if it was the only thing keeping him from crawling back to me.
“I have a meeting and will be gone for at least two hours. Think it would be prudent if you use that while I’m gone. It’s new and sterilized and ready.”
How freaking thoughtful of him.
Then Silas turned on his heel and strode for the door.
“You really are an asshole, aren’t you?” I snarled as I snatched the vibrator. I had every intention of beaning him in the back of the arrogant head with it.
“Yup,” he grunted as he took hold of the doorknob.
I thought he was going to stride right out, only he paused and looked back.
Cruel viciousness poured out.
The King showing off who was in command.
Only I swore it was covering something else.
“You should remember it.” He delivered the last with a punch before the door snapped shut behind him.
Fury and frustration bubbled under the surface of my skin. A horrible concoction of hate and need.
Livid, I almost threw the vibrator at the closed door, mourning the fact that I hadn’t taken the shot while I had the chance.
But it wouldn’t do any good.
Silas was long gone.
Besides, I supposed there were far better uses for it, and I refused to think of it as a win for the jerk when I pushed off the bed, stormed to the bathroom, and locked the door behind me.
Refused to think of him altogether as I shimmied out of my sleep pants and underwear and set one foot on the edge of the bathtub.
My free hand reached out to the wall for support.
Lucky for Silas, I had plenty of experience in getting myself off.
Unlucky for me, it was his vicious face I saw when I shoved it inside me.
NINETEEN
SILAS
“Motherfucker.”
What the fuck did I think I was doing?
I barely slowed to nab my cut from the back of the chair before I stumbled out of the house like I’d been trapped in noxious fumes and was in desperate need of a fresh breath of air.
Ripping at my hair and blundering around like a fool.
How could this woman affect me this way when no one else had ever held the power?
I had enough on my fucking shoulders to last fifteen lifetimes.
Enough baggage that nothing else would fit.
Enough vileness running through my contaminated veins that I knew never to get close.
I would only desolate and destroy.
Not to mention she was so off-limits, it wasn’t funny.
Even looking at her was a crime against my own law, and I’d never taken myself as one of those pathetic hypocrites who meted rules but didn’t follow them himself.
I’d already drilled it into my entire crew. Had warned them of the dire consequences of turning their attention toward our special guest.
Because Brinley was right.
She was a job.
A means to an end.
Because of her, we had the chance to rid the earth of that entire group of scum.
She had one thing wrong, though.
I’d never let anyone touch her. I would protect her to my last breath.
It was an oath I made.
A promise.
And that meant something to me.
What I hadn’t been prepared for was everything that she turned out to be.
That smart mouth almost as keen as her sharp-witted mind that I could see working at a thousand miles a minute.
Way those eyes toiled and whirled with that unrelenting curiosity, pilfering through the bare facts I’d given her like she still might be capable of coming up with the sum.
But it was the tender, genuine care underneath it that made her stand out.
What made her shine in some kind of rarely seen brilliance.
The way she worried about her brother was a true testament to her character.
I mean, fuck, I’d nearly been blown back into the wall when I’d come into the kitchen and found her holding Kai. Expression verging between bewildered and awed, and her heart gushing out onto the floor.
