“It was good. Went off without a hitch.”

I chuckle. “I knew it would. Thanks for taking care of it, brother.”

He pauses slightly. “Thanks for taking care of my sister. She really okay? She’s been crying a lot and—”

I cut him off. “She’s fine.”

“I’m fine, bub,” Sam echoes.

“Shit. I’m on speaker phone.” He huffs a breath. “Okay, I’ll see you guys soon.”

He hangs up, and I tell Siri to call The Peddler.

I order three steak meals, two chicken meals, extra salads, and an arrangement of desserts. I tell them to put it on my tab and where to deliver it. As soon as I hang up, I can feel Sam’s gaze on me.

“What?” I ask her.

She looks at me. “Does Kane have some roommates I don’t know about or something?”

I think about her question. He better fuckin’ not. If there are any assholes living with Kane, then Sam is coming to my apartment. “I don’t think he has any roommates,” I grunt.

She waves her hand around. “Okay, so why so much food?”

I calm, realizing her thinking. “Right, Well, I’m thinking there’s not a lot of food at Kane’s so you could have a few meals to eat until you’re able to get to the grocery store.”

She leans her head back in her seat and softly whispers, “I don’t see how you’re still single, Elijah Wolfe. The women of Whiskey Run must be crazy.”

My hand tightens on the steering wheel. The truth is, a few women have shown interest in me, but I’ve shut them all down.

There’s only one woman that I’m attracted to, and she’s sitting right next to me. And she’s completely off limits.

CHAPTER 4

SAMANTHA

I sit back in my chair, hand over my full belly.

Since the moment I’ve been here, after using the ladies’ room, I’ve only been allowed to sit with my feet up. Kane and Elijah carried everything in from the car, and Kane insisted I eat on the couch. As soon as I was done, Elijah carried my empty plate away, and now I’m sitting here getting looks from my brother and his friend.

“So… uh…” Kane starts.

I pull my feet off the cushions and plant them on the ground. I hold my hands up. “I promise, I’m going to be out of your hair before the baby comes.”

Kane shakes his head. “You can stay here as long as you want.”

I wrap my arms around myself. “I know, but I’m not going to cramp your style or anything. I’m going to get a job and—”

“You have a job,” Elijah grunts.

Kane flips his head toward him. “She does?”

Elijah doesn’t look at him. He continues staring at me. “Yes, she does. She’s coming to work for Wolfe Construction.”

I hold my hand up. “Elijah, I can’t…”

He moves to the edge of his chair. “You can. We need the help, and can you really turn down health insurance that starts from day one?”

I sit up a little taller. “You offer health insurance?”

Kane looks over at Elijah but doesn’t say a word.

Elijah nods. “Yes, we do.”

I look at my brother. “Is it going to bother you having me here at your apartment and also at your job?”

Kane claps his hands together. “What? No, of course not. Plus, I’m hardly ever in the office, so you won’t see me a lot. You can stay here as long as you want. I’m not going to let you take my niece to some—”

Elijah cuts him off. “You’re having a girl?”

I look at him. “Yeah, she’s a girl.”

He nods, scrubbing his hand up and down his face. “Right. Well, I should go.”

I try to stand up, but I’m slow about it. “Let me get my purse. I’ll pay you back for the tow and—”

Elijah shakes his head and holds his hands up. “I’m not taking your money.”

I grunt as I stand up. “But my car…”

He nods. “I got it. Don’t worry about it. When do you want to start? If you need a few days or weeks to settle—”

“I’ll be there in the morning.” She looks at her brother. “Kane, can I ride in with you?”

He nods. “Sure thing.”

Kane practically pushes Elijah from the living room. “I’m going to walk out with Eli. I’ll be right back.”

I barely get out the words “thanks for dinner” before they’re both walking out the front door.

I fall back into my chair with a huff and look around the tiny apartment. I was surprised when I walked in. Everything is clean and spotless. A big difference from the apartments Kane has had in the past. At least this one doesn’t smell like a bachelor pad, but I’m not going to get too comfortable. Kane can say all he wants that I’m not cramping his style, but I know my brother. He’s always having friends over to watch sports on television, drinking or hanging out. I don’t want to ruin any of that for him.
