The driver’s side door opens suicide style, and a man in a black hoodie steps out.

“You have a fucking problem?” The words I’m about to say next trail off when I look into a set of green eyes. “Adam?” I demand. “Fuck, man. If you needed something, you could have called me.” He knows I have his number, since I stole it from Eve’s phone. He’s also in a different car than when I saw him at his house.

His eyes fall to my bike before they glance back to mine. “You have a minute?”

“Yeah.” I nod, knowing this can’t be good. “What do you need?”

“Your cell.” He reaches out his hand, and I remove it from my pocket and hand it to him.

He pitches it off the side of the gravel road, and I watch it disappear into the woods.

Okay.

“Get in,” he orders, giving me his back, and I follow and fall into the passenger seat, hearing “Call Me” by Shinedown softly playing from his speakers.

“You know I have a tracker in my neck, right?” The guys are no doubt looking at my location since Tyson called them.

“I just need a few minutes.” He pulls out onto the two-lane road and then tosses a folder into my lap.

“Were you able to find Everett’s videos from Dollhouse?” I ask, my heart now racing at what’s in here. I open it up to find a police report. I frown. That wasn’t what I expected. “How the fuck did you get this?” I ask, but I already know. He told us that he’s been working on the inside. He’s got reach within the police. Not like we need it, but he sees the paperwork behind the cases.

“She’s in trouble.” He ignores my question.

My eyes shoot to his. “What kind of trouble?”

“She called the police…”

“Yeah, over the body she found in the cemetery. The detective Ty has on payroll told us.” I fill him in. “He also informed us that she was cleared.”

He sighs. “It’s bigger than that. They are going to make sure she goes down for the murders.”

I laugh. “They think she committed all seven murders? That’s ridiculous.” I’ve seen her kill three men, but seven women? Something tells me that it wasn’t my girl.

“They’ve got her DNA.” He glances at me quickly before looking back at the road.

The detective didn’t mention that to us. “Well, maybe she touched the body—”

“Jesus. Does anyone fucking listen?” he barks out, slamming his palm on his steering wheel. “I tried to tell her—”

“Wait. When?” He doesn’t answer, and I grind my teeth. “Did you know this the other night when we spoke at your house?”

He ignores that question too. “Her life is on the line right now, and she’s not taking it seriously. I thought you would.”

“I am,” I bark, dropping my eyes to the report.

“Good. I told her to run—”

“Not happening,” I interrupt him. I’ve been looking for her for too long to let her go now. But now I understand why he was adamant that she leave town the other night on the phone.

He tightens his grip on the steering wheel. “Then you’ll have to hide her at Carnage.”

“Done,” I say easily.

He gives a soft laugh. “She’s not going to go willingly.”

“You say that like it’ll be a problem.” I scan the paperwork that gives details of her explaining how she found the body. It also states that she had an attorney present—William Marks. A.k.a. Bill. “How long do I have?” I’ll have to come up with a plan.

“I’d say three weeks. A month at most. They want to wrap it up pretty quickly. But they need to get everything set up first. When they come to arrest her, there will be nothing left to dispute.”

I nod. “I’ll be ready.” But as much as I’d love to make her my pet at Carnage, I add, “I could go to Tyson’s detective. Tell him—”

“Don’t trust him.” He shakes his head. “She either has you or no one.”

Me. She has me.

“What about your boss? The detective on the plane?”

He sighs heavily before he answers. “This isn’t his department.”

How is this not his department? I’m not sure what the fuck he means by that, but I understand it’s a dead end. He’s no help.

“She probably shouldn’t be going out in public to party if she’s being set up,” I mumble to myself. She can get drunk at home.

“What do you mean?” he asks, and I consider ignoring him like he does some of my questions, but this is about Eve.

“I just saw her at Blackout.”

He frowns. “When?”

“Tonight.” I glance at his clock lighting up on his dash. “About twenty minutes ago. I just came from there.”

“Are you sure?”

I grind my teeth. “Yes. I spoke to her.” Fisting my busted knuckles, I add, “Some guys were talking shit about Eve. After I beat the fuck out of them, I looked for her. Was going to drag her ass out of there, but she had already left.”
