“Forgiveness is a gift. You never know the other side of the story until you see it firsthand or experience it yourself and even then, you only have your perception and what your feelings tell you to feel,” Gregor sighs.

“I guess you’re right.” I nod, thinking over his words and the last year.

“Sid looks about ready to pop. How does it feel?” My brother turns to me with a sparkle in his eyes.

“Another reason I’ve forgiven the old man. I’d do anything to make sure that kid is safe and happy. It won’t make all my choices right, but my heart will be in the right place,” I answer. “I think I finally understand him.”

“Chloe is my world. I’d turn it upside down for her. Again and again,” he says while staring across the garden at the little girl sitting in the laughing woman’s lap.

“Which one?” I chuckle.

“Need you even ask? It’s the same reply no matter which,” Gregor answers and starts across the garden without another word.

“Hello, brother.”

I turn my head to find Wade with a smug smile on his lips. I roll my eyes at him and shake my head.

“Hello, asshole,” I say with a small grin.

“Is that any way to talk to your big brother?” he taunts.

“You’re really getting a kick out of this, aren’t you?”

“I’m just waiting for the love to kick in.” He shrugs.

“That will kick in as soon as you stop helping the old man meddle,” I toss back.

“My job is done.” He shrugs. “His golden boys are all happy. I can slink off into the shadows now.”

I pop him upside the back of his head. “Cut the bullshit pity party. Besides, the old man hasn’t finished playing his games. Payback is a bitch, big brother.” I laugh and walk off.

“I love you too,” Wade calls after me.

I stop and turn. “Yeah, Wade, I do. You don’t have to question that. Breathe, bro. We know you’re one of us.”

I see the relief in his eyes and the sag of his shoulders. Because my wife has made me a better man, I move forward and tug him into a hug. Wade returns the embrace tightly.

“Now admit it. I’m the best-looking brother,” he says in my ear.

“Fuck you, asshole.” I laugh and push him away.

“Oh, my God,” my wife gasps, causing me to turn sharply.

I find her standing near Chloe and Gregor, her hands out at her sides, her eyes cast down at her feet, and her legs wet beneath her dress. She snaps her head up, her gaze wildly searching for me.

When our eyes meet, we have a silent conversation. I can see she’s scared. She’s been telling me for weeks she’s not ready to give birth, she’s petrified.

I tap my nose and watch as her eyes soften. Her little head bobs her trust. My chest swells. I have Sid and I have her trust. Now, we’re going to have a baby.
