His jaw tightens. “No shit. It’s definitely not good. I thought I was making headway and she was finally trusting me, but all that has been ruined at this point.”

I turn toward him. “You really like this girl.”

He gapes at me. “I told you I did. I fucked up.”

“Did you tell her you were helping me out?”

He laughs. “She wouldn’t listen. She didn’t want to hear it.”

I blow out a breath. “Let her cool off and then talk to her.”

“What if she doesn’t listen? What if I blew it?”

I tilt my head at my brother. He’s always been confident, hell, almost arrogant, so seeing him like this is strange.

I shake my head. “You’re Miller Brody! THE Miller Brody, and I know you. You’ll find a way to make her listen, and if it’s meant to be between the two of you, you’ll be together.”

I expect to see that determined look on his face, but he just shrugs. “Yeah, I guess.”

I rest my elbow on my knee and put my chin in my hand. “Well, all I know is I can’t wait to meet her. Finally, some woman that doesn’t fall for your charm—”

He interrupts me. “My money, you mean?”

I nod. “Money, charm… all I’m saying is I wanna meet her. I’ve never seen you like this before.”

He blows out a rough breath. “I’ve never felt this way before.”

I’m torn. I want to go pick up Bree, but I know Miller needs me. I’ve never seen him like this. So I settle back, put my hands on the sidewalk, and ask, “Tell me about her.”

And he starts to talk.

For fifteen minutes, Miller talks about the woman that he obviously loves. I keep looking at my watch, ready to go, but I force myself to sit here and listen. I owe him that at least.

CHAPTER 16

BREE

I push the code into the door at Savage Ink with a smile on my face. I’m nervous, but I’m excited about what the night holds. I practically run up the stairs, which is no small feat in my heels. As I get to the top, an uneasy feeling comes over me, but I ignore it and unlock my door. I set my purse and bag down and look around the empty room.

Shaking off the uneasy feeling, I take off my shoes as I walk down the hall to my bedroom. I change from my dress to a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. I walk into the bathroom to pack my toiletry bag and stop when I see the writing on the mirror.

“Found you!” is scrawled on the mirror with red lipstick.

My heart drops in my chest, and I start to panic. That uneasy feeling is back tenfold. I start to sweat, my heart starts to race, and my body starts to tremble. I’m not alone. The thought hits me, and before I can turn around, scream, or run, an arm comes around me, and a big hand covers my mouth. I see us in the mirror. I’m shocked, eyes round, and the man behind me doesn’t even attempt to hide from me. Piercing ice blue eyes stare back at me. John. The man that I kissed. The man that has made my life a living hell these last two years.

I struggle against his hold, but he’s not relenting. He drags me from the room, down the hallway, and to the front door. I know I can’t let him take me out of here, so I fight like I’ve never fought before. I jerk my body in different directions, clawing at his hands and fighting as hard as I can.

His voice is demanding in my ear. “Stop it, Bree or else I’m going to stay here and wait for your little boyfriend to show up and kill him right in front of you.”

My whole body goes limp. Logan will be here any minute, and even though John is no match for him, Logan won’t be ready for something like this. I can’t put him in this situation. I can’t believe I brought John and his Mafia family right to Whiskey Run. Right to Logan.

John smirks at me. “I’m guessing you don’t want me to meet your new boyfriend, do you?”

I pull from his hold, and this time he lets me go. I hold my hands up. “I’ll go with you. Can I at least put my shoes on?”

I gesture beside the door where my tennis shoes are sitting.

He grunts. “Yes, but hurry.”

As I’m putting on the tennis shoes, I ask him, “How did you find me?”

He shrugs. “It wasn’t hard.”

I shake my head. I did everything I could. I waited until the court proceedings were over. I emptied out my checking and savings. Paid cash for my move to Whiskey Run, and when I got here, I confessed to Zach, and he said he could seal my employment records. I have no idea how John found me, and I guess it doesn’t matter now. I stand up and point at the door. “Lead the way.”
