She lets out a shaky breath and blinks back tears. “I’m pregnant.”

Time itself stops.

She’s been on birth control since we met. Then I remember last month. She went on an antibiotic after a tooth abscess. She started feeling better but still finished the pills. Meanwhile, we were doing it on every available surface like a couple of horny teenagers. It should have clicked in my brain to use a backup method, but it never did.

I force myself to be calm and present with her. What I really want to do is beat my chest in feral pride. I did that. When her stomach gets round, everyone in town will know that she’s truly mine in every way.

Still, she doesn’t exactly look like she’s ready to do jumping jacks. The thought makes my stomach plummet. “Are you sad?”

She shakes her head as a tear rolls down her cheek. “I know what you lost, and I don’t want this to be a sad moment because I’m really happy right now. But also I understand that—”

“I couldn’t be happier, angel,” I say, and I mean the words. There will always be an ache for the family I lost. It doesn’t go away now that she’s here. Grief doesn’t work like that, but Sierra is my present. She’s my future. “I feel like the luckiest man in the world.”

“Really?” She searches my face for confirmation then slowly smiles when she sees the love that’s surely shining in my eyes.

I gather her in my arms, crushing her to my chest. Then I press a kiss to her head and inhale the familiar scent that is my Sierra. She’s a priceless treasure. Here she was so excited about the pregnancy and her first thought was of me. “I promise to love this baby just as fiercely as I love my sweet little wife.”

I spent so many years lonely and aching, but she’s chased away those shadows. She pulled me from the darkness. She brought me out of hell and back into the land of the living. My angel thinks I saved her but really, she rescued me. And I’ll spend the rest of my life showing her how precious she is to me.
