“Today isn’t about anything other than your birthday, bunny.”

“What does that mean?”

“You’re going to get dressed, and we’re going out to celebrate.”

“Are you serious?”

I smiled, trying to lessen the tension. “Like a bullet to the head.”

“You would use that as a metaphor.”

I knew there was no coming back from this, but fuck it, I threw caution to the wind. It was her birthday, and I wanted to make it as memorable as I could for her. This week had been hell for her. It was the least I could do after what I was putting her through.

Groaning against her mouth, I rasped, “I’m going to kiss you now.”

Her lips parted to say something.

“I’m not asking. I’m telling you.”

Before she could reply, I kissed her, beckoning her lips to open for me. They did, releasing a soft moan as she felt my tongue in her mouth. I’d always been a man of few words. To me, actions always spoke much louder and clearer than any sentence could ever provide.

Yet there I was, kissing her like she was mine.

“Jace…” she whispered against my lips. “What’s going to happen between us after this?”

“Cove, you already know the answer to that.”

“And what if I say no?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“So what I want once again doesn’t matter?” She pushed off my chest. “My whole life hasn’t mattered to the people who it should have the most. Now am I going to have to add you to that list too?”

I responded with the only thing I could. “Let’s just enjoy your birthday today, alright?”

I needed a minute to think, wanting to gather my thoughts.

My emotions.

The impulses she put me through.

My entire life had been built around control.

A schedule.

A routine.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t have any of those things when it came to my little sister’s best friend.

Once I found my sanity again, I ordered, “Go get ready. We have a long day ahead of us.”

Ignoring my request, she countered her own, “It’s my birthday, right? That means I get what I want?”

Intrigued about where she was going with this, I took her bait. “Something like that.”

“Fine, then I have my own demand for what I want.”

I arched an eyebrow, curious where she was going with this. I wish I could tell you I expected what she said next, but I didn’t.

Not for one second.

In all one breath, she ordered…

“I want you to take my virginity.”

Once again, almost knocking me on my ass.

Twenty-Four

Cove

Why I expected him to actually answer me was probably one of my dumbest thoughts since he killed Deacon. For a man I was supposed to be madly in love with, I barely thought about him these past few days I was with Jace.

I couldn’t believe how things changed so quickly, how fast everything escalated between us, and how much I didn’t want it to end. This wasn’t a man I only just met—I’d known him for almost my entire life.

He was my first crush, and now he was becoming my first everything. I guess he was making up for lost time of completely taking up residence in my head. My intense feelings for Jace didn’t compare to what I felt for whatever his real name was.

There was no comparing the two.

After I was finished getting dressed, I decided it was time for me to take things into my own hands. If I wanted to make him take my virginity, then I needed to give him blue balls to the worst extent.

Grabbing a pair of jean shorts, I cut them up to basically make them daisy dukes and I did the same with my tank top. After looking at my extremely revealing outfit in the floor-length mirror, I decided not to wear a bra with my stark white shirt. Smiling at myself in the mirror, I grabbed the wedge sandals in the closet to accentuate my long legs and finished off my ensemble with light makeup.

“Okay! I’m ready!” I exclaimed, striding into the living room to find Jace sitting on the couch.

He immediately snapped, “What the fuck are you wearing?”

“What?” I played innocent, spinning for him. “Don’t you like my outfit?”

“What outfit? You’re wearing nothing.”

“It’s my birthday. I can do what I want.”

He growled, fueling my satisfaction.

“You think you have this all planned out, don’t you?”

I nodded, proud as fuck.

“Bunny, what am I going to do with you?”

“Well, first… I want to go to a bikini shop.”

I thought he was going to kiss me again, and I waited on pins and needles to feel his lips against mine.

He didn’t.

Instead, he walked toward me, and each step was more determined than the last.

“Something you want from me?” he taunted.

Asshole.

“Nope.” I popped my p, mirroring his expression. “Let’s go.”

He scoffed out, reaching for me, but I was faster. I darted toward the car and slammed the door in his face.
