Morwenna glanced over to her mother, and she happened to notice just how tense her mother was.

“Are you okay, Mom?” she asked.

“I’m fine.”

“You seem ... tense.”

“I’m fine.”

Morwenna wasn’t exactly comforted by that response. Rather than argue with her mother or make her angry, she continued to drive. The silence, for the first time in her life, was actually awkward with her mother.

“You know, I was quite shocked to get a viewing,” she said, deciding to talk about the house rather than have the car filled with silence.

“You were?” Willow asked.

She heard her mother’s disapproval, which was a first for her. She wasn’t used to her mother not being happy with her decisions. It was rare for her mother to not be happy with her.

“Yeah, I called yesterday and was told the house was sold. It had been sold for nearly a month. They asked if there was any other house I wanted to see, and of course, there weren’t any. Anyway, I got the call this morning that it was back on the market, and they wanted to know if I wanted to see it.”

“Don’t you find that strange?” Willow asked, getting tense.

“Yeah, it’s strange, but this happens all the time with houses, doesn’t it? People pull out, and they don’t keep to their decision-making all the time. I figured that was what happened.”

“I don’t like this. I think we should turn around and go and see your father.”

“Mom, you’re not making any sense. We’re on the road now, and we have been for like twenty minutes already.”

“Something doesn’t feel right.”

Morwenna glanced toward her mother, who held onto her bag with a death grip. She continued to drive, and then she heard her mother’s sudden sharp gasp. Her gaze was toward the rearview mirror, and she’d already seen the car approaching from behind. Yes, it was gaining speed, but this was all normal. She was going the speed limit, and not a decibel above or below. The car came close, and she suspected it was going to move around her. Only, at first, it stopped right behind her, and Morwenna frowned, as it started to tail her.

Her mother’s hands were shaking as she pulled out her cell phone.

“Mom, what the hell is going on?”

She was too busy shaking, and then it was like the car got bored with intimidating them, quickly zoomed around, and took right off, heading straight at a speed she was not even going to try to compete with.

Slowly, her mother started to calm down, and she closed her cell phone and put the device away in her purse.

“Do you want to tell me what the hell is going on? Why did you act crazy?”

“I think I need to rest,” her mother said.

She couldn’t believe this was happening, and she shook her head. “No, hell, no, there is no way you can go to sleep. Not after what you just did. Do you want to tell me why you were freaking out at someone getting close? That made absolutely no sense at all. Explain it to me, Mom.”

“With the clubhouse going into lockdown, and you still married to Bolt, and the fact you’ve got a connection to Venom, I thought they might be targeting you.”

“Who might?”

“Whoever has them in lockdown.”

This made Morwenna frown. “Lockdown? Since when have they been in lockdown?” She hadn’t seen nor heard anything from Venom or Bolt. In fact, she hadn’t even gone to town. Whenever she needed anything, her dad had offered to go, and she’d been more than happy to let him go and get everything she needed.

Looking toward her mother, she saw the fear in her mother’s face.

“You thought we were in real danger,” Morwenna said.

“Just drive, honey. It’s fine.”

She no longer felt comfortable, but seeing they were now nearly halfway there, it seemed pointless to turn around. Rather than question her mother any further, she continued on the journey, although she wasn’t happy.

They arrived thirty minutes later, and she saw a car was already parked in the main driveway, and there was no additional space. It was a small property. One that had potential, but also couldn’t be expanded. She picked it solely on the new kitchen that had been installed. She parked her car, just away from the main driveway, and as she climbed out of the car, the man who must have been the one to call her this morning suddenly appeared in the doorway.

“You must be Morwenna Richards?” he asked.

“Yes, and that makes you Tom Arnold, is that right?” she asked, making her way up the driveway.

“Of course. We talked on the phone this morning. And this must be your ... mother? Willow, right?”

Morwenna tensed up. At no point during her conversation had she spoken about her mother.

She pulled her hand from his, and he chuckled. “It’s a pleasure to meet you both. Why don’t you come in?”
