He broke her.

With a few words, he managed to do what not even my owner was capable of.

All the shine, all the hope, all the love for life, erased in a few seconds.

All because of this fucker.

This fucker who is her father. Her papa. The one person she never stopped caring about. The one she wanted to protect at all cost. The only family she has left.

“You don’t deserve her,” I mutter under my breath.

His eyes widen.

“Yes, kill him,” my owner growls from behind me, and he steps away.

My teeth grind into each other.

I thought I knew who I was. What I wanted. What I needed.

But when our eyes connect again, I finally know for sure.

This girl … I would sacrifice it all for her.

“No.”

I turn around and aim my gun at the men behind me, at the guard who holds her down.

BANG!

The bullet enters his skull, and he drops onto the floor, blood pouring from the wound.

Everyone looks shocked, but my eyes are only on Aurora as I want her to know the truth. Everyone here is a monster … except her.

And without looking away, I aim my gun at my owner and shoot.

But the gun doesn’t go off.

I shoot again and again, but the clip is empty.

Guards all around us pull their guns and point them at me.

Fuck.

My owner looks livid. “Motherfu—You dare to shoot down my own men?”

He stomps toward me and presses the button so harshly that I collapse onto the ground immediately, the electrical current running through my body too strong to take.

“You had one job,” my owner growls. “One bullet, and you wasted it on my guard instead of that fucker?!”

The electricity makes me curl up into a ball, and the empty gun drops from my hand.

“What a disappointment. You deserve every ounce of pain,” my owner growls while my muscles contort. “Why? Why would you not just shoot that asshole? He deserved it!”

My eyes almost feel like they’re about to pop out of my skull. It hurts so much I can’t breathe. But I still manage to answer. “Because she loves him.”

I look up into her eyes, those magnificent eyes that dared to look at me like a normal human being, even when no one else would.

“You fucking betrayed me!” my owner yells, and he applies another jolt so powerful it twists my stomach. But when I look at her, every second of pain is worth it.

Her lips part, her face twisted with emotions, but nonetheless beautiful. A perfect picture for my last day on this earth. And when my eyes close, I take the pain and disappear into myself.

“Beast!” Aurora’s voice keeps me afloat, keeps me here, in the now. “Don’t give up! Fight!”

My eyes burst open, only to watch my owner stomp to one of his guards and snatch his gun from his hands. “I’ll finish this myself.”

And he marches right over to her father with the gun aimed at his head.

Even though the zaps are still burning up my body, I push myself up from the concrete floor before he can get there, finding the energy in her voice alone.

With all of my leftover strength, I push my fingers between the collar and pull as hard as I have ever pulled until the metal comes apart at the screws. I roar as the material bends and twists out of shape far enough for me to rip it apart.

I chuck it onto the floor.

CLING CLANG!

All the guards focus on the metal. Then their gazes swoop up to meet mine.

And as my owner stands in front of the one man who deserves death, I grab his wrist and push him away before he pulls the trigger.

BANG!

The bullet ricochets across the walls of the warehouse.

But there has never been a stronger silence than there is now.

“You …” My owner grits, his eyes widening at the sight of my missing collar. “How di—”

I punch him in the face as hard as I can. He falls back on his ass, blood pouring from his nose.

The guards scream out in vigor, pulling out their guns, waiting only on their boss’s signal.

But all I care about is saving her.

Aurora suddenly bolts toward me, emblazoned by the same courage that burst through my veins moments ago.

She hides behind me, and I shield her with my body as I hand her my knife. Without a second thought, she cuts her father loose, even with her tied-up hands. He doesn’t say thanks or even look at her before he runs off toward the exit.

“SHOOT HIM!” my owner roars.

And the explosion of bullets begins.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

There is only one thing on my mind.

The end.

But it cannot be hers.

I once told those guards if they hurt her, I’d eat them alive.

Time to make good on that promise.

CHAPTER 29

Aurora

Time’s up.

One second, I look at my father running away, and the next, the entire room fills with smoke and gunfire.
