“So, are you going to show me some magic?” he asked.

“You want to see some magic? Just like that?”

“Unless you’re not quite as powerful as you claim.”

“First of all, I wasn’t the one who claimed to be the most powerful witch. I was told about that. And second, I’ve never treated my magic like a game. I don’t know what you’d consider cool…” She held her hands up toward the trees, and began to call upon the wild. It didn’t take long for the trees to grow more plants, and she spiraled a rosebush around one of the tree trunks.

“You make flowers.”

“What I do is use magic to bring more beauty. Being destructive is part of dark magic.”

She waved her hand across the sky, turning it dark, at least for them. She didn’t have the ability to bring night when it was in fact day. If she could, she didn’t want to risk the consequences as that was indeed dark magic. Sending out waves of fireworks, she allowed them to go up into her sky.

“Holy shit,” he said.

“I know it’s not cool, but it is a lot of fun.”

“Nah, this is cool, Leah.”

“It doesn’t exactly do anything or help anyone, but this is what my family and my coven taught me to do.”

“To focus your magic.”

“Yes.”

“And destructive magic.”

“Is dark magic.”

“So tell me how good witches win in a fight?” Killian asked.

Leah waved her hands, and the magical scene evaporated. “We have our means. They’re not always easy. Bad magic is easier. Just drawing a fireball intent on killing, calling nature, and trying to use good magic takes time and practice.”

Killian reached out and tucked some of her hair behind her ears. “I think what you do is pretty cool.”

She couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you. How do you win in a fight?”

“Claws and teeth, brute strength, force.”

“And you’ve been in many fights?”

“I’ve seen wars. They’re not pretty.”

She agreed. She hadn’t personally seen wars, but Lucinda had made her witness them, using magic to do so.

“We better get moving,” she said.

Killian took her hand and he locked their fingers together, moving through the forest. It wasn’t long before they heard the noises coming from the town. This time, Killian moved out of the forest and assessed the town.

“Bears,” he said.

Leah tensed up.

Bears and wolves were not known for getting along.

“We should keep moving,” she said.

A man stepped out of the diner. He wore a suit and his hair was long, black, and thick. He was a bear. And it was someone Leah knew.

“Mystic!” She cried out in surprise and rushed toward him, throwing her arms around his neck and hugging him tight.

“Leah, how are you doing? It’s been an age!”

She hadn’t seen Mystic in a couple of years. “I was there for your transition, and since then, it’s been nonstop work for you.”

“You two know each other?” Killian asked.

Mystic glared at Killian.

“Leah, you know I love you and all that, but why did you bring a wolf to my town?”

“This wolf is her mate,” Killian said, growling.

Mystic gasped. “Holy shit, this is the guy that rejected you.”

“How did you know about that?” Leah asked.

“You told him about that?” Killian asked at the same time.

She looked to Killian and frowned. “No, I didn’t tell him anything.” She turned to Mystic. “How did you know?”

“Word spreads. It’s gossip for us guys.”

“No one should be spreading gossip,” Killian said.

She held her hand up. “Hold on a second. You knew about this and you still didn’t call? I thought we were friends.”

“We are friends and I’ve been trying to call you, but each time I did, I didn’t know exactly what to say. What do you say to someone who’s just been very publicly rejected?” he asked.

Leah winced. “I see your point.”

“What would you have said to me?” Mystic asked.

“I don’t know. I’m here.”

Mystic raised his brows. “Seriously?”

She wrinkled her nose. “You’re right. I wouldn’t have a clue what to say to you.” She shrugged. “Well, Mystic, this is Killian. We’re kind of on a secret mission. I don’t know what we’re doing. But it involves his pack. Killian, this is my good friend, Mystic. He’s a bear, and this is his town. I knew I recognized this place.”

Killian and Mystic shook hands, and it wasn’t a pretty sight.

“I better take you to my father. He’s going to want to see you,” Mystic said.

She hadn’t seen Mystic’s father in a long time.

Killian didn’t like how the bear was familiar with his mate. He didn’t like the bear touching his woman, hugging her, or being close to her.

“They’re like brother and sister,” Charlie said.

“What?” Killian looked away from the two who were sitting together, talking.

Leah had left him alone with Charlie, while she went and caught up with Mystic and a few of her other friends. He could see that they were all young.
