I nodded quickly as one hand went to his wrist and the other tried to pry some of his fingers loose from my neck.

“I can’t hear you. I asked if you understood?”

I nodded again, even though I didn’t understand. Not at all.

“You understand that you owe me money and that means I own you. It means I can do whatever I want and you take it like the junkie whore in training you are.” Every syllable was spoken with a kind of hate and vitriol I didn’t understand. A few moments ago we were bantering and now…this.

“No. I’ll. Get.” The words wouldn’t come out because I could barely get a breath out around the tight grip of his hand. “The money. I’ll get it.”

“Goddamn right you will,” he said and squeezed a little harder until my back rubbed against the wall when he lifted me in the air.

It was only a few inches but to my terrified brain it felt like I was at least twenty feet in the air. “You’ll get me what you owe me plus the two bags in your hand now.”

I dropped the bags immediately and he laughed.

“They’re yours. You owe me for them.”

“No,” I managed to squeak out and that only made him angrier.

His grip was so tight on my neck that black spots appeared around the edges of my vision, leaving me totally unprepared for the invasion of his hand between my legs. “Oh yes, Red. You got a nice fat pussy, don’tcha?”

His fingers slid across my pussy over my panties, and he pinched my lips. “I’ll bet you get real wet. I love a pussy that gushes.”

I choked and gagged on my words and screams, my body moving like a madwoman to escape this man and his evil touch. “No!”

“Yes, goddammit!” His grip tightened on my neck until my eyes met his so I could see the anger swimming in his eyes, the wild, irrational look that told me he wasn’t as put together as he appeared. His finger slid inside me and he pumped it in and out.

“Ooh, baby, you’re so wet. I can’t wait to fuck you. To bend you over and fuck you from behind, to tear open that tight little virgin asshole of yours.” He rubbed his dick against me and shuddered, his lips pressed against my neck and I slammed my eyes shut against the nausea that rose up within me. “I expect the rest of my money. Tomorrow.”

“That’s too—”

His fingers slid out from under the elastic band of my panties. He lifted the fabric until it snapped back against my skin. “Tomorrow. Or else I’ll get exactly what I want from you, and I can’t guarantee you’ll come out of it alive.”

His grip loosened and Squeaker stepped back, a satisfied gleam in his dark eyes. “Tomorrow,” he said one more time and turned to walk away, his gait casual like he hadn’t just assaulted and threatened me.

It took a few minutes to get my feet solid under my body, but as soon as I did, I ran toward my car, not caring how crazy I appeared to the people waiting for the bus on one corner or eating on the patio of a pub on the other corner.

I ran until I was in the safety of my car and the second I was inside, I locked the doors and opened the center console. It was where I stashed some of my pills and grabbed one oblong white one and placed it on my tongue.

I closed my eyes and swallowed hard, willing away the images and sensations associated with the alley and the last fifteen minutes of my life.

I closed my eyes and sank against the driver’s seat until my pulse relaxed and pain started to fade. I wasn’t the disgrace Mother said I was or the junkie whore that came out of Squeaker’s filthy mouth. I was just me. Just Bonnie.

And no one had ever touched me like that.

When I could finally drive, I made my way to the pharmacy to get my prescription refilled. Then I headed back to Ashby Manor where I popped another pill and got dressed for dinner with Maisie.

I tossed my filthy panties in the trash, ignoring the voices of my mother and Squeaker, both painting me with a sin I hadn’t even committed.

CHAPTER TEN

Cal

How in the hell did I let Virgil talk me into dinner with him and Maisie? And Bonnie? That was easy; he promised to talk to Jasper about giving me a bigger role in the family side of the business, and I came running.

Talk about pathetic.

“Have any of you heard from Bonnie? I stopped at her room before we left and she wasn’t there.” Maisie knew enough to know something was wrong, but her new job at the casino kept her busy. Answering the oddball requests of wealthy gamblers was a twenty-four-seven job and no matter how well-intentioned, she had no idea how bad shit really was with her friend.
