“You’re kidding?”

“Nope. I wish I was. She jumped up, but it was too late—covered in puke and also wound up peeing on her clothes when she stood.”

“I’m almost afraid to ask, but what was the other bad experience?”

“Oh, another time she was on a blind date in a quiet restaurant when she had to use the ladies’ room. The woman next to her apparently brought her son into the stall with her. The little boy stuck his head under and watched her pee, and then when he saw her in the restaurant, he started yelling at the top of his lungs while pointing and demanding to know why she had no hair on her pee-pee.”

I chuckled. “That’s pretty funny.”

“For us, yes. For her…not so much. But that pretty much sums up the kind of luck my friend has. Lately, it’s been even worse.”

I had no idea why, but I was curious. “What happened recently?”

“She’s got a shitty mom who dumps her problems on her. And then there’s the guy she’s been in love with for years who strings her along. Don’t even get me started on the siblings from hell she believes are angels. I’m pretty sure they’re the spawn of Satan.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“Are you really?” the woman asked.

I thought about it. “Yeah, I am. It sucks to have shitty parents and be strung along.”

“You sound like a nice guy. What was your name again?”

“Owen. What’s yours?”

“Mia.” She paused. “Listen, now that we’re buddies, would you mind looking around the bar for my friend? That way you can return her phone to her, and I can also make sure she’s okay.”

“Yeah, I can do that. But this place is pretty packed. Can you give me an idea what she looks like?”

“Long, wavy auburn hair. Fair skin with bright green eyes. She’s short, but curvy. She kind of looks like she stepped out of the seventies—she has a boho-chic vibe about her, like Stevie Nicks back in the day, but even hotter.”

I scanned the room, but no one came close to that description. “Sorry, I don’t see her.”

The woman sighed. “Let me send a picture. If it’s dark in there, you might not realize her hair is auburn. Hang on. I’ll shoot it to her phone. I’m always yelling at her for not having a password, but this time it’s working for us.”

A few seconds later, the cell in my hand chimed. I opened the message, and a photo popped up. At the risk of sounding like a complete puss, my heart skipped a beat. The woman was gorgeous, but it was more than that. Her head was thrown back in laughter, and…I had the craziest urge to find out what it sounded like.

“Wow,” I said. But I was still staring at the picture on the phone, not holding it up to my ear. I’d completely forgotten I was on the phone with anyone. Until I heard Mia’s voice in the distance.

“Hello? Owen, are you still there?”

“Shit.” I raised the phone to my ear. “Sorry. It took a minute for the photo to open.”

“Oh, okay. I figured you were busy drooling. That’s what men tend to do when they see Devyn.”

I frowned. Great.

I shook the ridiculous jealous thoughts from my head and scanned the room again. “I’m going to take a lap around the bar, see if I can get a better look.”

Squeezing through the leftover happy hour crowd that was now feeling really freaking happy, I circled the bar. I was just about to give up and tell Mia I’d leave her friend’s phone with the bartender, when I spotted the woman in the photo.

And it happened again. A second skip of the heart. Though, this time I realized it was probably just because I’d had too much coffee today. Caffeine can cause palpitations. My heart was not going pitter-patter over a glimpse of some random woman. Lately that didn’t even happen when one invited me home with her.

I wedged my way through a group of hipsters drinking Moscow mules out of copper mugs to get a better look at the guy she was talking to.

Shit. Evan Cooper—otherwise known in my circle of friends as McLoser. The guy was a complete jerk-off.

“Anything?” Mia asked through the phone.

“Yeah, I think I found her.”

“Oh, that’s great!”

“But…she’s kind of getting cozy with this guy I’m not a fan of.”

“Ugh. Let me guess. He’s good-looking, but a womanizer. Probably looks like a movie star or rocker or something?”

“How did you know that?”

“Because my friend is amazing, but she has crap taste in men.”

“This dude is good-looking, even I can admit that. He could pass for Jared Leto’s brother. But he’s completely full of shit. Tells women he owns a string of fast-food restaurants when he really works at McDonald’s.”

Mia sighed through the phone. “Yep, that sounds about right.”
