“We’re landing early in Colorado Springs.” The announcement came, breaking into my thought of wanting to hang around forever.

“Shit,” I breathed. “That means another flight.”

“That means a drive if you want it to mean a drive,” Keene said quietly.

I’d never wanted it to mean a drive more in my life. “You want to split a rental car?”

He scoffed. “After that? Of fucking course I do.”

CHAPTER 6

Roses are red, I’m going to bed.

-Keene to Ande

KEENE

We touched down at the airport, and every single person I made eye contact with looked wary as fuck.

My adrenaline was still pumping, and the woman at my side was clinging so tightly that it was hard to get our shit out of the overhead bin.

I didn’t complain, though.

I needed her just as close as she needed me in that moment.

I’d spent the last forty fucking minutes thinking that I was going to die right along with her, and a few things had shifted in my mindset in that time.

One, I wanted to see my sisters and my nieces and nephews one more time before I died.

Two, I wanted kids.

Three, I wanted a wife.

Four, I wanted this world to be a better place, and that meant that despite wanting all of those previous things, I still wanted to accomplish my original goal.

But in the twenty minutes—not fucking ten like the pilot had said—of turbulence, and bad turbulence at that, I’d realized that sticking it to my father would be the final fuck you to his memory.

With the woman still practically wrapped around me on one side, and the other holding not only my backpack but her carry-on, we made our way off the plane.

“For those of you who want to drive from here, there’s a rental car station downstairs,” I heard as I walked out. “You can pick your baggage up in baggage claim. If you do want to fly, the next flight to Nebraska is tomorrow night at nine pm.”

If driving didn’t already sound great, it would’ve sounded perfect after that.

There was no way I was going to spend any more time in the airport if I didn’t have to. And after a quick glance at the distance from Colorado Springs to Nebraska, six hours sounded definitely doable.

The woman plastered into my side was still shaking, and I had to pull her closer into my arms to bypass all the people who were crowded around.

A few were even mad that they had landed.

I nearly laughed as I walked past.

They weren’t concerned for the other people who’d fallen and likely broken bones in that freak twenty minutes?

Jesus Christ, the nerve of some people.

How could they care so little for their fellow passengers?

“Assholes,” I grumbled as I continued to navigate.

We’d just gotten to the main walkway that led between terminals when a sign that read ‘family bathroom’ caught my eye.

With the woman beside me still shaking like a leaf, I pushed the door open and tugged her inside.

She came willingly, not putting up a single ounce of fight.

I dropped our bags, then did the only sane thing I could do in that moment. I gathered her to me, picked her straight up off the floor, then deposited her onto the counter.

Her arms and legs had circled my waist, and there she sat, breathing hard and still shaking for a long ten minutes before slowly, the panic started to work itself out of her system.

But as it did, an increasingly disturbing thought kept sinking deeper and deeper inside of me, and I couldn’t stop the feelings from taking hold.

She was warm. Close. We’d kissed and she tasted divine…

Finally, she pulled back and looked up at me, her heart in her eyes.

“You okay?” I asked.

She licked her lips, nodded, then refocused her eyes on my mouth.

That was all it took.

I wasn’t even sure who moved first.

Her or me, it didn’t matter.

One second, we were being respectable, and the next we were seconds away from fucking in the family bathroom at Colorado Springs airport.

“Are you sure?” I asked, pulling away just enough that I could look into her eyes.

Her answer was to rip her sweatshirt and t-shirt over her head, revealing her very bare chest.

No bra.

Why did that turn me on so much?

“Guess that answers that,” I said.

Then I was pulling my wallet out of my jeans, throwing it on the counter, and then shucking my shirt.

My boots and my jeans followed suit, and soon we were both naked and hastily trying to devour each other.

I managed to reach for my wallet and the condom I’d been carrying there for a year—thank God I’d kept it there despite telling myself every time I saw it that it was a temptation I didn’t need.

Being abstinent was working out great for me.

I felt better not having meaningless fucks with women I’d never want to see again, but this… this was anything but meaningless.
