I shake my head. “He did not.”

“So what are you saying, Anna? That you’ve–”

“Never had sex?” I ask aggressively. “That’s right, Blake. I’m as virgin as they come. So I think if you’re looking for a gal that you can take home to have an amazing time in bed with—that isn’t me.”

Blake narrows his eyes again, and again I feel like I’ve said something wrong.

“Oh, you don’t think so?” he asks. But before I can reply, he’s nearly on top of me, his arms on either side of my neck, his body pressed against mine with just the right amount of pressure. “You don’t think I could take control of you, Anna? Make you mine? Show you exactly how I like it and make you love it at the same time?”

The heat between my legs explodes and catches my entire body on fire. I’ve never been this close to a man before, let alone a man like Blake Lockwood. Nothing but the thin fabric of my dress separates us, and I can feel the hard, taut muscles of his dangerous body grinding against me.

And more.

The swollen bulge between his legs signals his arousal for me. My body responds to his in a purely primal way. Something deep inside of me calls out to him. There are…things I want to do for him.

Is it possible for human females to go into heat?

I’ve read about women being into bad boys before. “Alpha males,” as they call them. But I always thought it was nonsense. Yet here I am just sweltering for this most alpha of alphas in the entire city. My hormones are raging, I’m seeing naked images of us flash through my mind, It’s like a gravitational force pulling us together.

This is not what I was expecting when I was getting ready for my date with Trevor this afternoon.

“You said you haven’t felt this way in a long time,” I whisper. Blake’s eyes smile back at me, and he nods.

“That’s right, I haven’t.”

“So…maybe you’re out of practice?” Teasing a kingpin. What am I thinking? But I’m so flooded with hormones that I’m not quite thinking right.

Blake presses the thick bulge between his legs into the junction of my thighs. He leans in and breathes gently against the soft skin of my neck. Nerves tingle all over my body. Even my back arches up off the seat, causing me to press against him even more.

“Oh, you’re a real wildcat, aren’t you, sugar?” he asks. “I’d wager there’s a lot more to you once I unlock you.”

“Unlock me?” I repeat. “Well, if you want me, why don’t you just take me?”

A snake-like hiss of a laugh escapes Blake’s lips. He seizes my jaw with and forces my eyes to his. “That’s a good question, sweetie. Because you’re right; I own this city. I take whatever I want. But you know what?”

“What?”

“It’s boring.” He smiles, and I see a hint of the man behind those vicious, terrifying eyes. “No, if I have you, Anna, I want it to be because I earned you. Because you wanted me too.”

I laugh. “You do realize you just basically kidnapped me from a date I was on with another man, right?”

Trevor smirks and cocks his head from side to side.

“Baby steps.”

The car pulls to a stop, and the driver calls out from the front, “Sir, we’re here.”

Blake

This is not how I saw my day going when I woke up this morning.

I had business planned. All business and then an evening alone. That’s what I’m used to—being alone.

But now here I am with Anna, a girl who has ignited a spark inside me, watching her get fitted for a brand-new dress that I’m not only willing to pay for—I’m excited to pay for. I know she’s not using me for my money. I know she has no interest in being queen of the underworld either.

Any interest she has right now is purely in me. And I can’t describe how that makes me feel after living such an isolated life for so long.

She looks so stunning as the owner of the boutique helps fit her. She’s clearly nervous but doing her best to hide it. Her curves are hypnotic, her face worthy of a painting.

There’s no way I can let her go. I haven’t even had a taste of her yet, and I know she must be mine.

Just the feeling of her clothed body beneath me in the back of the car was a memory I’ll cherish forever.

And then there’s the way she sasses me—mouths off to me. No one has behaved that way with me in years. My men know better, and the women who approach me all just suck up to men. Anna makes me feel alive again. It’s incredible. Maybe there’s hope for my heart after all.

“What do you think?” Selene, the dressmaker and owner of the boutique, asks, presenting Anna to me like her own personal mannequin.
