My heart stops when I see two bulking men standing next to his truck, but Landon calls to one of them. “Thank you for getting here so fast.”

“No problem.” The larger of the two answers. “Giant is working on arranging round-the-clock security.”

Landon nods his head before opening the passenger door for me. I stare out the window attempting to ignore him, but the raised hairs on my arm tell me he’s watching me closely.

“Where are we going?” I ask when he drives past the turn for Cash’s apartment.

“I already told you. I’m taking you to the ranch.” His knuckles turn white as he grips the steering wheel. “Beautiful, frustrating, pain in my ass,” Landon grumbles under his breath.

“I want to go to my sister’s house.” No use fighting his opinion of me.

“Look.” He pulls over on the side of the road, and I notice a black SUV park behind us. “Stop being so obstinate. Hadley is recovering from her accident, and Cash is trying to protect her.”

I forget all about the other vehicle as I argue with him. “So, you’re taking care of me for Cash and Hadley.”

“Fuck a duck, you like to be difficult.” He turns to me with narrowed eyes. “No. I’m here because you’re the most important thing to me, and I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe. Now, shut your beautiful mouth and let me drive. We can have a knock-down, drag-out once we’re home.” He pulls onto the deserted road heading out of town.

“Okay,” I agree as the fight bleeds out of me. Glancing in the side mirror, I watch the SUV stay on our tail. “There’s someone following us.”

“That’s the bodyguards I hired.” Holy shit. Bodyguards?

He turns off the main road onto a tree-lined driveway. A huge white, two-story home comes into view, and I realize Landon is wealthier than I’d thought. “Nice house.”

“Thank you.” He pulls past the circular drive and parks in front of the steps leading to the wraparound porch. He turns to me and runs his fingers gently around the bump on the side of my temple. “Can we call a truce long enough to talk? Please?”

Exhausted, I nod my head. He waves to the two burly guys in the other SUV then helps me out of the vehicle. After grabbing my suitcase, he leads me into the huge house. “My housekeeper quit, and I haven’t had a chance to hire another one,” he tells me. “Gloria has been helping out until I find a replacement.”

There’s a knock at the door, and Landon turns to me and points to the first doorway. “Wait for me in the living room. I’ll see what’s going on.”

I hear Landon giving someone instructions and realize it was one of the bodyguards knocking on the door. He growls something unintelligible while I walk away.

Wow. I blink and look around the stunning room. Dark wood walls lead to high ceilings. There’s a large burgundy leather sofa and matching love seat facing the floor-to-ceiling fireplace. I walk to the French doors and look out at the pool area.

“Would you like something to drink?” I didn’t even hear Landon return.

Looking over my shoulder, I shake my head. “No, thank you.”

He points at the sofa. “Have a seat and let me explain something to you.” After I sit down, he paces the room and blurts out, “Look, I’m a moron.” I didn’t expect that. My mouth falls open as I listen to him. “I know I’ve made a mess out of this whole relationship, but I’ve never done this before. And Uncle Sylvester picked a really shitty time to die and leave a mess, and then our new prospect is a fucking idiot.”

My mind is back on I’ve never done this before. Surely, he’s exaggerating. “When you say never done this?” I ask him, ignoring everything else.

Landon looks up at the ceiling and inhales deeply, then blows it out slowly. “I’ve never been in a relationship before,” he admits. “Between the ranch and the club, I haven’t had the time nor desire to pursue women.” After sitting next to me, he takes my hand and gives it a squeeze. “You knocked me on my ass, and I can’t resist what is happening between us, but the rest of my life has been falling apart.” He explains the situation with his uncle and the ranch ownership. “I had to file motion after motion to get his affairs in order before I could leave Florida. Once that was under control, I came home to a disaster with the club.” I feel a tremor run through his massive frame. “It kills me that the shit show ended up hurting you.” He runs his finger down my nose before kissing the spot. “I’m going to find the fuckers and shove my foot up their asses for daring to touch my woman.” With those words, he reaches into my chest and steals my heart.
