The six Fae warriors guarding it step aside, allowing me to walk right up to the reflective surface.

"Be careful, Valkyrie," Rhistel says, his voice gruff as he glances at me and then quickly away, his back ramrod straight. "The Portal has been restless today."

"Restless?" I cock my head to the side, eyeing the ancient Fae warrior. "How so?"

"Flickering." He nods at it. "It used to do that sometimes."

I narrow my eyes on the Portal, but it looks the same as always to me. I turn back to Rhistel, frowning. "Was there any pattern to when it flickered? Back then, I mean?"

"Ja." His lips compress as the warriors beside him stir restlessly, looking anywhere but at me. "Anytime the Valkyrie were emotional, the Portal sensed it."

"Emotional?" I arch a brow at him.

This time, the unflappable warrior stirs just like the men he leads. "Ah, when they felt things strongly, Valkyrie." He grimaces, an apology in his Fae-bright eyes. "I meant no offense."

I grunt instead of responding, almost positive he meant exactly what he said the first time. Emotional. Ugh.

I'm not emotional, and neither are my sisters. But if anyone has a right to be, don't we? We've been hunted down like rabbits for months by the Forsaken, our families picked off, our worlds shattered to pieces. We've been thrust into the middle of an ancient battle, told we're supposed to save all of creation…and given no real insight into how to do it.

Du er i min verden – You are my world.

Hundre riker ville være for få til å inneholde min kjærlighet til deg – A hundred kingdoms aren't enough to contain my love for you.

Prologue

Marion

The flickering TV casts an eerie glow across my living room as I hover on the edge of sleep, fighting the urge to close my eyes and drift. Sleep brings dreams, and those are rarely a comfort. They never have been for me. My whole life, I've seen awful things. Evil things.

But I'm so tired that my eyes flutter and close anyway. I slowly begin to drift, swept away by darkness.

Bang, bang, bang.

I jolt upward on the couch, my eyes flying wide open. My heart races, adrenaline surging through my veins as I whip my head toward the front door.

Someone pounds on it again.

I glance back at the clock on the television. It's after midnight. What the hell?

I clutch my phone with shaking hands and creep cautiously toward the door, slightly afraid to look but fairly certain a robber wouldn't knock to announce himself first. At least, I don't think he would.

I'm not entirely sure. I've never been robbed before.

"Get a grip, Marion," I mutter to myself as I lift up on my toes to peek through the peephole. A familiar shock of flame-red hair has me dropping back down to flat feet again.

"W-who are you?" I ask the woman on the other side of the door, my heart in my throat.

My entire life, I've seen this woman in glimpses. Out of the corner of my eye. Standing on the street corner across from me. In my rearview mirror. She's there and then gone, nothing more than a fleeting shadow. She's a ghost with my hair and face, so hauntingly familiar. Yet, I've never met her.

When I was a kid, I used to tell myself that she was my mother, trying to summon the courage to approach me. But those naive childhood dreams died as the years dragged on, and the woman never emerged from the shadows. I became convinced she was simply a figment of my imagination, just a dream I sold myself to make being completely alone in this world a little less intolerable.

That dream seems a little too real with the sound of her knocks still echoing in my ears.

"Marion, please, open the door," the woman pleads, her lilting voice tinged with desperation. "You're in danger, dear one."

Danger…

An icy chill skitters down my spine at her words, confirming the sense of impending doom that's clung to me for days now. It's a creeping darkness, an invading wrongness, hovering just out of sight. Something is coming for me. I don't understand the feeling at all, but I know it in my bones. I feel it in my soul.

That instinctive dread alone propels me to twist the lock and allow her inside.

As she steps over the threshold, her fiery red hair cascading down her back, her emerald eyes lock with mine. Shock ripples through me. Looking at her is like gazing into a mirror. We could be twins.

Except, she's beautiful in an ethereal, otherworldly sort of way. There's something unreal about her, as if she doesn't belong in this world. Maybe it's just my imagination, but a soft, golden glow surrounds her, almost like she's radiating sunlight.

Is it the same as…? I shy away from that train of thought, afraid to chase it. Afraid of where it might lead, of what it might mean for me.

Love turned to hatred that grew over millennia. But when fate threatens the mate caught between them, can the two Fae warriors who guard her soul set it aside to protect her?

Damrion
For millennia, I’ve lived with the shame of regret and the guilt of loss. The last Fae prince, haunted by decisions I can’t take back. I never imagined I’d be given a second chance.
A thick haze of acrid smoke and gray ash hangs over Álfheimr, choking the life out of our world. I cough as it billows in black clouds from fires raging all over the realm that birthed the Fae. From my vantage point on the battlements of the castle, I see the red glow far below. It’s as if the Jötunn set the entire world on fire.

I pace back and forth, my footsteps echoing against the crumbling remains of our once-legendary castle. The screams of the dead and the dying float up from the haze below, threatening to break me in a way nothing ever has.

My world is dying.

Surt and his Giants have laid waste to it, their fury merciless. We’re on the verge of losing everything, but I refuse to let it fall without a fight.

I owe our people this much. It shouldn’t be my choice. I wasn’t meant to lead. My duty is to Valhalla and the oaths I swore to protect her borders. But word arrived days ago that I’m the last remaining royal.

Álfheimr has no one else.

My heart aches with the weight of loss. The conflict has claimed everyone I love.

Nei, not everyone.

I clench my fists, my nails biting into my palms as Adriel’s face floats to the surface of my mind. He’s still out there. He’s still fighting.

Gods, Adriel.

His lips are on mine, his hands tangled in my hair. His kiss is urgent, desperate, as though he's trying to convey a thousand unspoken words.

I respond with the same urgency, clutching him to me. His taste is intoxicating, his scent overwhelmingly familiar. It’s the only comfort left these days.

He’s my only peace. I just wish I would have been strong enough to reach for him long before this fucking war started.

All that time wasted...

“Damrion,” he groans, writhing against me as I wrap my hand around his erection. “Fuck.”

A powerful knock on the door shatters the moment like glass hitting stone.

I wrench myself from his arms, my heart hammering against my ribcage. In two steps, I’m on the opposite side of the chamber, my back to him.

“Enter!” I shout.

Burion hurries into the room, rivulets of blood running down his face. They stain his hands. His eyes are wild as they meet mine.

"The Eastern Regiment..." he gasps, panting as if he ran the entire way here. "Under attack. Outnumbered by thousands."

Faen.

If the Eastern Regiment falls, Álfheimr falls. They’re our last line of defense.

“Thank you. Get yourself to the Valkyrie and rest. I’ll send word to the generals.”

How many of our generals even still live?

Burion nods and stumbles out, leaving behind an oppressive silence.

I turn back to Adriel, a weight on my heart. It only grows when I see his face. The fire in his eyes has winked out, replaced by a chilling emptiness. And I know it has nothing to do with the news Burion brought.

This is my doing.

“Adriel, I—”

"I'm going," he says suddenly, his voice devoid of emotion.

My heart clenches.

"Adriel, wait." I reach for him but he steps back, his face set in an icy glare. “You don't owe us anything else. You’ve done enough."

He’s been unstoppable since the war began, one of our most deadly warriors. If history remembers us at all, it’ll be this Fae and his Light they immortalize.

"This isn't about owing, Damrion." A bitter smile twists his lips as he shakes his head at me. "It's about fighting for our world. For our people. So long as there’s a need, I’ll fight.” Disappointment flows through his black eyes before his expression goes blank. “Until just now, I thought perhaps I was fighting for us, too.”

“Adriel.”

He strides toward the door, not looking at me.

Faen.

“Adriel, please. Let’s talk about this.”

"Nei, Damrion. I won’t be your hidden shame or your dirty fucking secret. If that’s all you want from me, there’s nothing to talk about.”
A Valkyrie bound by Fate. A Fae warrior driven by love. When destiny demands a sacrifice, will these fated mates pay the ultimate price?

Reaper

For millennia, I was one of the strongest Fae warriors in Valhalla, willing to die to defend her borders. That was before the Forsaken destroyed everything I knew.

I've spent the last three hundred years trapped on earth, aching for vengeance. I never thought it'd come in the form of a petite little human with sapphire blue eyes and steel in her soul. The moment Tori binds my soul to hers, my allegiance shifts. Destroying the Forsaken no longer matters to me. Protecting this beautiful little Valkyrie is all I care about.

I'll do whatever it takes to ensure she survives. Even if I have to destroy the nine realms myself. The only thing I won't do is let her go. She's mine. My Valkyrie. My soul. Mine.

Tori

I knew my ordinary, boring life was over when I was ripped from my bed by monsters. But I expected them to kill me, not thrust me into the middle of an ancient war.

I certainly didn't expect Reaper. From the moment the warrior rescues me, our bond eclipses everything. It doesn't matter that this world is new and terrifying. It doesn't even matter that they're asking me to do the impossible. All that matters is him.

Right up until I'm forced to make a choice that may destroy us both. How do I choose between the man I love and the fate of everything?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Reaper

Ahowl rips through the destroyed house, the scent of spilled blood strong as I cross from room to room, carefully checking for any Forsaken fortunate enough to have escaped Rissa's deadly blast of power. The shuddering stillness is a sharp counterpoint to the fiery blast of fury that swept through the house not even ten minutes ago, decimating every Forsaken in its path.

The Valkyrie is powerful.

Perhaps our enemies should have considered that before they murdered the girl's father. But they didn't.

By the time we arrived to rescue her, there was no need. She'd already sent them scurrying like roaches running from the light. Those not quick enough died where they stood, engulfed in the hot rush of pure Light shooting from her hands.

They haven't felt anything like it since the last Valkyrie fell three hundred years ago, taking hope with them. Hope rises again now. I hope it has the Forsaken shitting their shorts, as the humans say. They certainly should be.

The Valkyrie we've been waiting for since the portal fell and we were trapped on earth are coming into their power. Rissa is the first, but she won't be the last. Four more are still yet to be called, spun out by prophecy to stand against the Forsaken and the Dark. Destined to restore Valhalla.

The Fae will stand with them as we always have.

Personally, I look forward to dealing death to our enemies once more. They've whispered my name—Reaper—in awe and fear for millennia, calling me a harvester of souls. The Dark fears me as they should. I have no sympathy for evil and no mercy, either. I smother the shadow indiscriminately, exactly as I was born to do.

It's a nasty job, but someone has to do it. It might as well be me. The Fae are immortal. Living forever gets boring without something to break up the monotony. Murder and mayhem will do in a pinch. Especially when it's the Forsaken at the business end of my lyststål.

The weapon hangs heavy in my hands now, eager to taste the blood of our enemies as I pace through the dirty old house. Despite the victory we won here today, the bitter taste of foreboding coats my tongue. Something isn't right here—and I'm not referring to the stench of alcohol permeating every inch of the place. I feel unsettled, a sense of unease whispering up my spine that I can't shake.

My footfalls echo eerily in the hollow silence of the dirty hall. My brothers spread throughout the house, checking it over as I do. We move quickly, efficiently, a well-oiled machine after millennia of fighting side by side. If they feel what I do, they don't comment on it.

The bedroom I step into is filthy, but vacant. The bed is unmade, the sheets stained and wrinkled. Papers and clothes are scattered across the floor. The windows are grimy, blocking out most of the sunlight. Peeling wallpaper covers the nicotine-stained walls. A strong odor of mildew lingers, along with the faint scent of rotting food and unwashed clothes. It's suffocating, like breathing in old, stale air.

How does anyone live this way?

I scan the room only long enough to ensure it's vacant before stepping out.

Malachi steps out of the bedroom across the hall, his nose wrinkled in disgust. His easy smile is nowhere to be found as his blue eyes meet mine, his umber skin gleaming under the overhead lights. "How does anyone live this way?" he growls.

I shrug, not having an answer for him. Rissa's father pumped his body full of poison, drowning himself in alcohol. He wasn't a good man, nor was he one deserving of sympathy. He killed her mother—his own mate. Some sins are unforgivable to the Fae. If the miserable bastard spent his life smelling his own filth, it was more than he deserved.

The Valkyrie, Rissa, loved him, though. At least enough to believe him worthy of rescue. She tried, even if she ultimately failed. My loyalty is to her. My heart pulses with empathy for her. She saw something worth saving in her father. Being back here and facing the past can't be easy for her, yet she came anyway.

Malachi and I stride toward the cracked door at the end of the hall together. The closer we get, the louder my heart hammers. The sense of foreboding grows stronger. I glance at Malachi, but if he feels the same, no trace of it shows on his face. He says nothing, either.

I reach the door first and gently push it open with the toe of my boot, a tingle of anticipation running down my spine.

The bathroom, like the rest of the house, is filthy. Cold water fills a small tub, the figure of a woman half-submerged within. Ropes bind her hands and feet. Her petite, curvy frame barely disturbs the surface of the water, yet her blonde hair floats across it like strands of gold.

Valhalla is rising…and so are its enemies. Luckily, this Valkyrie is bound to an ancient Fae warrior.

Rissa

My entire life, I've been different. I've felt things I shouldn't. Heard things that weren't there. But those whispers never led me astray until my twenty-first birthday. The handsome stranger at the bar seemed innocent enough…until I woke up in his bed with no recollection of how I got there.

He says I'm not who I think I am, and that I'm in danger. The craziest part? The more time I spend with him, the more I want to believe it when he says he belongs to me. But my life isn't a fairytale, and places like Valhalla, mate bonds, and ancient Fae warriors don't exist…do they?

Dax

For millennia, I was oathbound to protect Valhalla, a warrior of Light sworn to defend her no matter the cost. Until the Forsaken destroyed every last Valkyrie within her borders.

My brothers and I have spent the last three hundred years in exile, trapped on earth and waiting for the five mortal women prophesized to restore honor to the Halls. But when Rissa calls my soul, everything changes.

My loyalty is no longer to Valhalla and the Fae but to the powerful woman caught in a prophecy she doesn't understand. I'll do whatever I have to do to keep her Light shining and protect our bond. Even if it means letting Valhalla fall forever.

Valkyrie Heart is the first book in the Valkyrie Bound series of interconnected romances. If you enjoy thrilling paranormal romance, fiercely protective Fae warriors, and strong, curvy heroines, you'll love the Valkyrie Bound series. Each book introduces a new couple and their bond. Each story ends in an HFN for the couple, but the overarching story continues through each book.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

"In a realm of shadows, five shall emerge, each carrying the sacred gifts bestowed by their foremothers. As they step into the light, the echoes of time will guide their way, revealing what once was lost. The Exiled, weary and burdened, shall embark on a perilous quest to restore honor for the Halls. Yet, a cautionary whisper resonates: tread carefully in the presence of the Forsaken. If the sisters falter, a torrent of great evil will engulf the realms, casting them into an eternal night."

The stench of war lies heavy in the air, settling in the back of my throat. The sickly, sweet scents of blood and death mix with smoke and ash, threatening to choke every last remaining Light out of Valhalla. I grit my teeth against that grim reality and race around the edge of the Hall of Warriors, my lyststål blazing like a sun in my hands.

Shouts and the screams of the dying ring out around me. There are far fewer of them now than there were just an hour ago. And fewer still than there were yesterday and the day before that. None are women. Not any longer.

There's no denying the truth anymore.

The last of the Valkyrie have fallen.

An endless well of grief bubbles up from my soul, threatening to consume me. I slam a lid on it, reaching deep for anger instead. Ja. Anger. The furious churn of rage eating like acid through my stomach. It's what drives the Fae now. What fuels us.

Rage.

The Valkyrie have fallen. And Gods have mercy on the souls of the Forsaken who claimed their Light, for the Fae will have none for them.

"Dax! Til venstre! Til venstre!" Adriel's shouted warning reaches my ears just in time.

I feint to the right, my lyststål spinning in my hands.

It slices through the neck of an armored varulv, one of the shifters the Forsaken turned to the dark long ago, separating his head from his shoulders. His body drops, warm blood spraying across my face. Tendrils of smoke float from the wound my lyststål left, carried by the wind. I drag the back of my hand across my face, flinging off the foul blood of the soul-damned monster before turning to check on my brothers.

My breath catches in my throat.

Once, Valhalla was a place of beauty, a paradise. Now, it lies in ruin, destroyed by our Forsaken invaders and their monstrous army. The once radiant Hall of Warriors is a charred, twisted relic. Bodies litter the valley, turning the lush green fields red. The barracks have burnt to the ground, leaving nothing but smoking piles of ash.

There's nothing left to save.

We've failed.

Valhalla, like Álfheimr, lies in ruin.

A flash at the edge of the valley captures my attention. It's nothing more than a brief flicker, gone as soon as it appears. But I shift my gaze toward it on instinct. For a long moment, nothing moves. And then the same flicker reaches me. I release my hold on Magn, the source of Fae power, allowing my lyststål to dissolve in my hands. Without it blazing like a nimbus, I see what I didn't before.

Something unseen strikes against the portal, causing the bright surface to momentarily turn a sickly gray and let off a shower of sparks. It does it again, and then again.

Horror surges through me as realization dawns. The Forsaken are trying to bring it down!

Gods alive. If they destroy it, Valhalla won't just lie in ruin. It'll fall completely, cut off entirely from Asgard. There are no Valkyrie left alive to reopen it. Just like there are none left to usher the souls of the dead across the Veil.

Ragnarök claimed nearly every Valkyrie life, along with the souls of every warrior bonded to her, two thousand years ago. The Forsaken and their dark magic have claimed the rest.

But the Fae still stand. Some of us, at least. And so long as we stand, our oath remains unbroken. We're the guardians of Valhalla, the army of Light appointed by Odin himself to defend the Valkyrie, no matter what comes.

The portal cannot fall.

"Fae! Beskytt portalen!" I roar, leaping over the fallen varulv in a dead race across the valley toward the portal. I reach for Magn, my lyststål blazing back to life. "Beskytt portalen! They're trying to bring it down!"

Roars of fury echo from every corner of the valley as my brothers take up the cry. Within moments, Malachi, Adriel, and Damrion are at my side, racing across the valley with me. One Forsaken warrior after another falls to our blades, unable to stand against the Light. Varulv, Jötunn, and Forsaken alike taste death as we deal it to them, one by one.
