It’s always been the three of us doing the rodeo shows– Danny, his little sister June, and me. Two bull riders and a barrel racer. Three peas in a pod.
But now that June is all grown up, I can’t keep thinking about her.
I’ve always been the strong and silent type. She is the sparkle at every party.
I think about her constantly, dream about a future, and it’s high time she knew it.
When I confess my feelings – things change. Fast. It’s time to grab the bull by the horns and hold on tight – it’s about to be a Rowdy ride! -dual virgins
-bull rider energy
-small town cowboy
-scorching hot
-forbidden romance Burly is one town over from Home, WA where the Rough family lives. The Rowdy boys are their cowboy cousins. Get ready for them to lasso your heart!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

JENNINGS

The seats are packed, the murmuring of hundreds of people serving as our background noise.

“The hometown crowd, huh?” Danny says as he slaps me on the back. “Nothing like knowing everyone you grew up around is here to watch you and remember every mistake you make today.”

“The solution is to not make any mistakes, Danny. Isn’t it simple?”

“Easier said than done.” He scratches the hair under his hat. “You’re the perfect one. I think they keep me here because they need someone to bumble around for comic relief.”

Ramblin’ Randy’s Rodeo has long been a fixture in Burly and its surrounding counties. It’s a traveling show, going about and giving a bit of that Old West flavor to the people. Danny and I are the bull riders, but the rodeo has more than that. Lots of horse-riding tricks, making them dance, a petting zoo for the young’uns, and of course, clowns in cowboy hats.

You can’t forget the clowns in cowboy hats.

It’s what Danny is, he just doesn’t wear any makeup and tries to ride bulls with the rest of us.

And I remind him of this fact every time I think it’ll be funny to see him get riled up.

He doesn’t really hold it against me. There’s a showmanship to it all. I may be one of the best bull riders in our little circus, but rodeo has always been this weird blend of performance and competition. You need a bit of variety, not just everyone being as perfect as possible. To people who don’t have any Old West in them to understand, I often compare it to professional wrestling with a whole lot more beef and a whole lot less Spandex. We aren’t the same, but we’re definitely cousins.

A big part of that difference is that I’m riding that bull for real. Hard to get an angry cow to go along with a script, what with it being about a ton of angry beast who doesn’t understand the concept of performance beyond what limited training we can give it.

And Danny’s right about the stakes being higher today. This time the show is in Burly itself, where Danny and I, and Danny’s sister June, were born and raised.

June. Just thinking of her gives me goosebumps.

“Think you got enough layers under there, buddy?” I say as I watch Danny button up his shirt.

“It’s cold. And it’s dangerous. We ought to be out there in, like, leather jackets instead of these rhinestone shirts and dungarees. But leather jackets are for bikers and not us, I guess.”

I grunt in agreement. This is dangerous work, but damn, it’s a thrill. It’s what brought me here in the first place, and liking everything else beyond the bull riding makes it all the more fun for me.

All bundled up, Danny checks himself out in the mirror. He’s looking good and ready to go. He then takes off his hat and sits it down on the table. “Going to go get my pre-ride snack.”

“Still don’t get how your ritual ends up with you not puking all over the bull.”

“Calms my nerves, Jennings. You know more than anyone that bull riding is way more about keeping your head in the game than strictly about muscle and balance.”

He heads toward the door and in comes in a similar face, though much prettier.

Junebug Jenkins. A recent addition to our little traveling circus.

And a long-standing crush of mine.

She looks up at me with those sparkling blue doe eyes of hers and I can’t help but instantly fall in love with her all over again.

“Out to assert dominance over the bull with a pre-match beef hot dog?” she nudges her brother as he passes.

“You know it.”

They’re close siblings. I kind of understand it, having four very close brothers of my own. No sister, though, so these two have a different dynamic than I’m used to. For instance, my brothers never really tried to gatekeep my chastity.

Danny leaves us and June says, “Hello there, Jennings.”

Her eyelashes flutter. She has such a bubbly personality and I love it so damn much.

She joined us on our tour last year when she got out of high school. She had the performer's itch, and the skills a lot of girls in Burly pick up. A horse girl, she knows a lot about guiding them, more than just from between point A to point B, and is one of the rodeo’s newest and hottest acts. She’s a barrel rider, riding fast through an obstacle course and impressing the crowds with her skill. Given that a lot of them know horses themselves, that really does mean something.

“Hello there, Junebug,” I say, a smile on my face.

“Oh, you know I don’t like it when you call me that.”

“But you don’t seem to mind it when everyone else calls you that.”

“Yeah, but you’re different, Jennings. I’m fine with them seeing me as that charming little girl. Maybe I want you to see me as more than that.”
Can these two overcome a family feud and find love?

When Nelson Rowdy puts on a taco costume for the towns annual Fall Ball masquerade party, he isn’t expecting to fall in love with an avocado.
When conversation turns steamy, they don’t just want to guac about it – they want to add a little heat to their night.
Hands travel, masks come off – and they are face-to-face with a 100 year long feud.
Nicole McCormick is off limits.
But damn – she is all grown up, back from college, and impossible to resist.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

NELSON

This year’s Rowdy Brothers Halloween Gamble Series didn’t go too well for me.

Every year, me and my brothers have a little seasonal fun, culminating at the Burly County Fall Ball.

The rules are simple. There are a series of bets and contests between us. Could be on the Seahawks’ opening game or whether the Mariners get past the first round of playoffs.

It could be a footrace across the ranch, or an arm-wrestling match. Hell, maybe even something dorky like playing a video game or whose fantasy football team does better.

It’s elimination-style. Five of us, one after the other, dropping off. All the losers have to forfeit something. When we were younger, it was giving up shares of our Halloween candy. As we got older, we started buying cases of beer.

But one penalty is always the same. The person who gets eliminated first has their costume for the Burly County Fall Ball chosen by the ultimate winner.

This year, I got taken out first. The Seahawks let me down again, daring me to continue to show faith in their ability to win a dang football game. I was hoping Carter or Jennings would come out on top. Usually those two are more merciful than our older brothers, since their age gave them an edge back when we were young.

No such luck. Williams is the winner this year.

And he decided to be the random style of comical with my costume.

I’ll be going to the Fall Ball as a taco, of all things.

Why a taco? Fuck if I know. Ask Williams. It amuses him, and that’s all that matters.

And thus, here I am.

Standing in a crowd of people in a full-body taco suit. Not the kind where my head pops out and I just look like a dork. No, one that covers me up completely. The taco is vertically aligned with big, googly eyes on it, and it’s the actual mascot for a small Mexican chain restaurant down in California. Lord knows how Williams scored it, but anyway, no one around here knows that restaurant, so I’m here, dressed as a cartoon taco, à propos of absolutely nothing. Meanwhile everyone else at the festival is dressed in more recognizable and traditional costumes. Witches, Wizards, ghosts, zombies, and vampires clashing with more pretty, vibrant things like fairies, princesses, and superheroes.

God, I feel like a fucking idiot. On the plus side, no one can see who I am, so at least I won’t have to answer to this shame later.

I’m grateful this dumb costume has a mouthhole too, so I can enjoy the little pleasures of the Fall Ball. It’s awkward, but I can sample the various farms’ apple ciders. They all do a pretty good job of it. Way better than anything from a grocery store. The apple ales they have are pretty nice too, and you can’t get them anywhere but here.

The people who come to the festival are a nice spread of parents and kids, and a good deal of single people too. There’s a fair share of young women who would normally catch my eye, dressed as seductive versions of all the usual costumes. Never thought I’d see someone dressed as a sexy zombie, complete with alluring brain leakage, but here we are.

I take my time and just enjoy the atmosphere. A lot of people look at me weird, trying to understand the joke that even I don’t understand. I’m slowly making my way over to where most of the young adults of Burly are spending their time, a masquerade ball in a barn near the town’s corn maze.

Yes, Burly maintains a yearly corn maze, publicly owned by the town. It’s just the sort of weird thing a small rural town excels at.

It’s during my short walk over to the barn that I spot the only other costume strange enough to match the sight of the Fall Ball taco.

A Fall Ball avocado.

The costume has the same set of googly eyes that mine has. They’re so similar it makes me wonder if it’s another mascot for the same Mexican food place. I have no choice but to approach. “Well then, I guess this is where the guac for my taco is.”

The avocado turns, and I notice the only things not covered by the costume. Shapely legs, lithe arms. “Did they hire you too?”

The soft, feminine voice confirms it — this avocado has a lady underneath. And I can’t help but be slightly attracted despite only being able to see her limbs.

“Who hired me?”

The avocado tilts her head, to the extent that she’s able. “Are you playing dumb? You’re Tomas the Taco.”

“The taco’s name is Tomas?”

“Yes? I thought you’d know that if you’re wearing the outfit.”

“Sorry, miss, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Who’s Tomas the Taco?”

“The equivalent of Ronald McDonald for Diego’s Mexican Delights,” she says. “They ran an ad online paying $1,000 for people to come to the festival as one of their characters. It’s some weird ad campaign, I guess. I’m dressed as Ava the Avocado.”

Carter is a local bad boy rancher with one hell of a reputation.
Cadence is a preacher’s daughter who has never made a mistake.
When their worlds collide, the chemistry is undeniable – but no one would believe their connection is real.
They must decide who to live for, and what’s worth a Rowdy brawl.
Carter isn’t letting go of Cadence easy. He’s fought before, and he will fight again.
Only this time, it’s for her heart. *preachers daughter

Here we go again. My older brother is off and lecturing me about anything and everything for the third time this month.

“I have to drag you out of the drunk tank again? Who did you punch this time?”

We’re riding back to the Rowdy ranch in his truck. Cash is strangling the wheel with his grip, just like he always does when he picks me up from the local jail.

“Only people who deserve it. Some out-of-towner giving Mitch shit about his beer not being the perfect temperature.”

“Yeah, but was punching him in the face really the solution, Carter?”

“Telling him to piss off didn’t work. So I just went right to what would.”

He shakes his head. “Goddamn, you drive me batty, brother. No one else is on a first-name basis with the sheriff like you are.”

“Clyde gets that I do what I do with good reason. He only arrests me because it is technically illegal. I’m real good at getting them to not press charges.”

“Saying you got the sheriff on your side isn’t making you out to be a better person, Carter.” Cash anxiously runs his hand through his hair. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep hiding your bullshit from Dad. I don’t want to make his life any more hellish than it already is.”

I grunt. I don’t like pissing off Dad. He was never the type to beat us or anything, but the guy can look at you and make you feel far worse than an ass-kicking ever could. “Whatever. Just get me home. I have an appointment I gotta make.”

“If you have appointments to make, shouldn’t you prepare for them by not getting arrested the day before?”

I ignore him and stare out the window.

I don’t know what’s going on with me anymore. It’s a bit of... what’s that fancy French word for the advanced level of boredom?

Ennui?

Life’s been just... something or other.

I sort of floundered through high school. I was depressed as hell, which I guess is understandable since I lost my mother around that time. I had no ambitions for a career. I was content with just being a good hand at the Rowdy family ranch, helping Cash out in the field. My other brothers all had goals. Nelson went off to college, Williams had his machines, Jennings had ambitions of something showier.

I had none of that.

I had drinking. A whole lot of it. The past half decade of my life has been incredibly dull, and I’ve been looking for some outlet. Mostly? That comes in the form of fights. I find someone who deserves it. I either smack them down unopposed or I get into a scuffle. Either way, the adrenaline gets pumping for a night, and I’ve slept in rougher places than the drunk tank.

Women, hunting, fishing? They all do nothing for me. I’ve tried it all, looking for a way to fill the hole in my life.

We pull up at the ranch house. I get out without a word.

“I worry about you, man,” Cash says from the truck. “You’ve got some issues. I want to help you, but I can’t if you don’t open up.”

“Not your problem, Cash.”

“You’re my brother. You are my problem. I’d rather you speak up now than us catch you fighting a literal bull again just because you’re out for a thrill. One slip-up and you got a horn through your gut doing that.”

“I do that one time,” I say as I march away, “and I never, ever hear the end of it.”

I head into the family home and get right to the shower. I am not lying about having an appointment to make.

In the past few years, I have found one thing that brings me a little joy. Something that I’m honestly kind of embarrassed about. It’s not something that I’d be open to telling my brothers about, let alone anyone else who knows me.

I clean myself up. A proper shave, fresh clothes, button-down shirt to go with my jeans, boots on. Cash eyes me as I walk out the door of the house. The way I’m dressed isn’t what people usually expect when they see someone who just got out of the drunk tank.

The Landons, though, are a whole lot more proper than us Rowdys. They expect you to be a gentleman when you show up to their church, whereas the Rowdys don’t generally give much of a shit how they’re dressed, no matter where they’re going. As long as you’re wearing clothes, any clothes at all will do the trick.

I know this personally from an incident that I will not elaborate on further.

Dolly Dean was my mother. She loved my father dearly, but she was taken from us, the cruelty of cancer lurking in our lives. I lost her way too young, but even in the few years I knew her, she made such an impression on me.
Williams and Windy have been best friends since grade school.
But now that they are all grown up, things are changing.
For one, their invention has a shot at being more than a pipedream.
If they get an investor, they could make their dream a reality.
As they work toward their joint goal, William starts to realize he doesn’t just want to run a business with Windy. He wants a whole life with her.
But telling the truth might mean losing the one girl he has always put first.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

WILLIAMS

“It’s on the house, Williams, you did one hell of a job with my old truck.” Mitch slides me a glass tankard across the counter, filled to the frothy brim with my preferred booze.

“Think nothing of it. It’s my job. And you paid for it.”

Mitch leans on the counter. It’s pretty slow right now, so he doesn’t have any other patrons to tend to. “You went the extra mile. My truck is from the 1980s and you got parts in for it ASAP.”

I shrug. “I know you need it to go visit your mother. It’s really no big deal.”

“Oh, it is. I had a breakdown in Seattle once and I had to spend a week in a hotel because they refused to speed up any of the orders.”

I laugh. They were probably just lazy. I didn’t tell Mitch this, but the repair job I did for him only required a bit of tinkering, making another truck’s part fit his older model. I have some minor engineering skills that serve me well in my job.

“If you really want to spoil me, how about a batch of the saloon’s famous mozzarella sticks?”

“Be right out for you, Will.”

This is small-town life. It’s about supply and demand, bartering. You watch other people’s back, you help them out, and they’ll help you out in turn. Sure, you still exchange money. That’s just how the world works today, and people need money to get by. But it’s mostly about being a community, an extended family of sorts.

It’s the great thing about a place like Burly.

I sip my beer, looking about, passing my time. It’s still the early-bird hours at the bar, but I wanted to make sure I have plenty of time before nightfall.

I’ve never been the type to come to the bar to drink alone. I come here with purpose. Today I’m meeting with an old friend.

Mitch returns, dropping off the basket of mozzarella sticks. “Fresh batch, right out of the fryer, just for you, Will.”

“Thanks a lot, Mitch. You treat a man just right.”

“Just doing my job,” he says with a smile, throwing my words back out at me.

Chuckling, I take one, dip it in the healthy supply of marinara he gave me, and chew as I think about the person I’m about to meet.

Windy Jones.

Middle school best friends, and we always wanted to keep it like that. Burly isn’t a very big town, and the school we went to reflected that. Most of the kids were pretty typical small-town, rural types. Into horse-riding, sports and the like. Windy and I? We were nerds compared to them.

Not the Dungeons and Dragons kind—we were into machines and technology, and how it all worked.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been interested in what makes things tick. How did our tractor plow the field? How did the milking machines work? I created my fair share of chaos back in the day taking things apart only for my Dad to have to call the repairman in to put them back together.

That isn’t an issue anymore. My brother Cash is taking over the ranch, but I’m still on board as the all-around repair guy. It’s the twenty-first century, even ranches gotta be wired up. I keep everything flowing so the business can be done, and all the machines are in good order.

Growing up, Windy was a kindred soul. We both had a curiosity about machines and technology, and she was the only girl in the our high school mechanics class. Maybe because the other guys thought less of her for being a girl, I hit it off with her. As friends, I remind myself.

We never became anything else. We were close, but so many stories of relationships becoming more than friends and failing scared me off of pushing for more. And I knew her well enough to see it scared her too. So we stayed friends. Even though we were single, even through the prom. Which we went to together. As friends.

Both of us were really dedicated to not crossing that line.

We went to a state technical school together, and then I went back to the ranch to be useful there.

Windy, though?

She had to go elsewhere. Burly’s too small of a town to find a job like what she was looking for, and our local auto mechanic didn’t need another set of hands. Her father runs an auto parts store, but it’s just a store, not a garage, so off to Seattle she went, working on cars and making some good money. The money’s a consolation prize for not being able to work where she wanted.

We’ve stayed in touch. Mostly over the internet. She seems to hate it in Seattle, always bickering about big city life and how rude everyone is to her. But she’s kept at it, and has done well for herself.
When Cassidy Jones shows up at the Burly Bar I know what I need.
Her.
Gentle in ways my calloused hands aren’t and tender in the ways I crave, there is no denying the spark.
She just moved to town to nanny, but after one night I want to be the one looking after her.
She’s never ridden a cowboy — let alone a horse, but it’s time she learns.
And I’m just the cowboy to teach her. Burly is one town over from Home, WA where the Rough family lives. The Rowdy boys are their cowboy cousins. Get ready for them to lasso your heart!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

CASH

It’s the end of another hard day of doing things the old-fashioned way.

I fall into my chair, and start unlacing my boots. My entire body aches, but that’s all too typical. I’ll crack a beer, order a pizza, and just sort of veg out for a bit.

That’s my typical Friday night.

Boring ass shit.

Lonely ass shit.

Don’t get me wrong. I live with my family, so there are constantly people around. My brothers are awesome guys. Always there for me in every way you can imagine. My old man is there for me when he can be too.

But I still feel fucking lonely.

Every night, it’s the same old thing. We spend all day working together, so we tend to want a little time to ourselves after work. So we split off to our own corners of the house, and I often spend the night alone. The only difference is on Fridays I order pizza because that’s one of my favorite childhood memories. Friday has always been pizza day and it’s not a bad tradition to keep going forward.

There’s a rapping on the door. I groan, stretching out. I feel like an old man, but I’m not even thirty. Life on the ranch is tough, but it’s not that tough – I guess I’m just getting tired.

It can’t be the pizza. I haven’t even ordered it yet, and I’d be surprised if Rossi’s just decided to send me my weekly order automatically.

I open the door, and Rye Rough bursts on through like he owns the place.

“Good evening to you too, Rye.”

“Cash, I was in the area and I decided I’d pay my cousins a visit.”

“Uh huh,” I stroke my chin, feeling kinda scruffy. “Like you have every week for a while now. Have you been dodging your old woman or something?”

Rye’s been popping in a lot ever since Graham, one of his brothers, called the Rowdy boys in for some support in rescuing a girl from some weird prepper’s cult. He shakes his head at my accusation. “I value every moment I spend with Prairie, Cash. She’s my world.”

And I guess that’s part of my problem these days.

All the Rough boys, our cousins through our aunt, have been living pretty charmed lives lately. Over in Home, all of them have been busy falling in love and getting married. That cult rescue we did was for Mac’s girl. Each and every one of them has fallen madly in fucking love, and I have to say…

I’m a bit jealous.

It’s not that I’m not happy for them. They’re blood, and we’re close as cousins can be. Countless family get-togethers, Aunt Annie making every holiday dinner something to truly remember. But to see love strike each of my cousins and leave me so lonely?

Yeah. Jealousy. It’s natural. I want what Rye has, because what he has is pretty fuckin’ sweet.

“This is like, the fourth time you’ve been over just to check in on me. Is the pizza place in Home really that awful?”

He shakes his head. “Hardly. I think it’s better than the place you got here.”

“Leguizamo’s is good pizza, man.”

“It has nothing to do with pizza, Cash.” He sighs, and then sits down on the couch, and I collapse right next to him.

As much as I’m questioning his presence, it isn’t like I don’t welcome his company, and I have no suspicions that he has any sort of nefarious intent. “Then what is it, man?”

He sighs, running his fingers through his hair. “I’m worried about you guys.”

“Worried about us, how? The ranch is doing fine. We’ve been in business thirty years, and I doubt we’re suddenly going to go tits up.”

“It isn’t about your ranch. Or your financial situation. It’s about your mental health.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Not going to pretend I’m the happiest person in the world, Rye. But I’m hardly depressed to the point you gotta worry about me.”

“Are you sure? I know you and your brothers just retreat home every weekend once the work is done. And I know you’re just going to fall asleep on the couch tonight after half a six pack and half a pizza.”

I shrug. “Worse ways to spend a Friday night.”

“You need a woman, Cash.”

“And I’m not disagreeing. But I can’t just take a jaunt down to the woman store and pick one up, cousin.”

“Wallowing in self-pity, pizza and booze won’t take care of it either.”

I grunt. “Believe me, I’ve been giving it a go. Been using the internet to try to find someone, but that’s been going rough.”

“You’re not going to find anyone on the internet, Cash. Not in a place like Burly, not in this county. You’ll get someone from the city you need to drive two hours to go on a date with, and she’ll probably be a vegan and take deep offense to your profession.”
