Store manager, yes, so close that I can taste it. After another meeting with Gregory tonight I’m sure I’ve got it. I’m giddy with excitement on the outlook for my future. The only way to go is up.

With my keys already in my hand and my purse slung around my shoulder, I waltz across the parking lot and to my car with renewed pride. Two years of hard work. Two fucking years of getting up early, covering shifts for people that don’t give a fuck about me, and pretending to like my pig-headed boss. Two years and I’m finally heading in the right direction. I think I'll celebrate tonight, maybe with a new book and a cup of hot chocolate. Reading is my favorite past time, the one thing that hasn’t changed about me in the last two years.

A big fat grin pulls at my lips. Even if I’m only smiling for myself, at least I’m smiling for something. I keep my eyes on my car as I walk slowly toward it, but not fast enough to draw attention to myself. The store isn’t in the best part of town. Not that it’s a horrible area, but that doesn’t mean that evil isn’t lurking just around the corner. I’ve seen evil first hand. I know it can hide in even the most inconspicuous places. Like the pastor who's supposed to lend a helping hand. Or the parents who’re supposed to show you love and kindness.

Pfft, as if.

“Where’s the money, Murphy?” A man’s voice cuts through the air. The voice is menacing, cold as steel, and it grips me by the throat, practically choking me. I didn’t mean to turn my head toward the sound. I knew I shouldn’t have. I should’ve kept walking, but I couldn’t. Like I said, that voice, it gripped onto me with a vengeance. I turned more out of reflex than anything but doing so consequently became the biggest mistake of my life.

The shiny metal of a gun reflects in the light coming from the streetlamp above just a moment before I hear the shot being fired from it. Oh god. I lift my hands, bringing them to my mouth. My heart stops inside my chest, or at least it feels that way. When it starts beating again it’s in an unnatural rhythm. My lungs constrict as I gather enough oxygen to scream. I know it's stupid, that it will only draw unwanted attention, but I can't hold back the fear racing through me. It reminds me far too much of the past, far too much of him.

The scream rips from my throat, just as the lifeless body of the man called, Murphy collapses to the concrete. The man holding the gun turns, his head snapping up, those dark eyes finding mine even though I'm partially hidden in the shadows.

Fear slithers down my spine, and danger coats the air clogging my lungs, making it hard to breathe. Looking into the killer’s eyes, I'm taken back in time, remembering the last time I looked into a pair of eyes as cold as his. I barely survived that night I’ve seen Luke last, but that won't happen here. I didn’t make it this far only to risk dying a second time.

I feel paralyzed, my muscles rigid with fear for a moment. Time stands still as we stare at each other, but as soon as I see him move, my body springs into action. I sprint toward my car, unlocking it as fast as possible, as soon as I get it unlocked, I rip the door open and throw myself into the driver's seat.

Once inside, I put the key in the ignition with a shaking hand and start the thing. It turns over right away, the engine roaring to life in my ears. Thank god, it doesn’t choose tonight to be the night that it needs a jump. I glance toward my rearview mirror and see the guy running toward me, he lifts his gun as if he's going to shoot me and without thinking I slump down in my seat and slam my foot on the gas. My stomach clenches, twisting, and tightening. With tires squealing I turn onto the road, running over the curb in the process.

Oh my god! What just happened?

I drive home completely on autopilot. My mind consumed with fear. The kind of fear I thought I had buried a long time ago. I grip onto the steering wheel so hard that my knuckles turn white. It's been two long years since I witnessed something so gruesome, so violent, I guess I forgot that part of my life ever existed. I’ve grown so accustomed to my current peaceful life that I forgot there were bad people still lurking in this world.
She was a broken angel that had the light beat right out of her. I was the man responsible for her life, her protector…
Rescued by my brother and shoved into my arms I never expected to fall for the fragile woman, with soft eyes, and lips that begged to be kissed.
I know what she saw when she looked at me, a ruthless fighter, a man with a broken past, to far gone to be reached, sinking deeper and deeper into the darkness.
Still somehow her light reached me, the innocence inside her called to me and the moment her soul touched mine I was tamed, ensnared in her love.
But love comes at a cost, and in our world you pay with your life. With all the danger surrounding us, I don’t know if I can protect her. Not only from myself, but also from a past that refuses to let go.
**This is book five in the series but it can be read as a complete standalone. This is a full length novel. It contains NO-CLIFFHANGER, NO CHEATING, and has a HEA. It is a dark mafia/crime romance and contains subject matter not suitable for all readers.**

Prologue

Sophie

I feel nothing, even though I know I should feel something…anything. Maybe I numbed myself because my body can’t handle any more pain…or maybe I’m just broken. My body and my soul…broken beyond repair.

I stopped feeling anything a few days ago. I don't know exactly how long because I haven't been able to keep track of time. Hours bleed together in this cell, like an endless string of useless time.

Feeling nothing is better than the overwhelming pain and all-consuming dread.

How could my family do this to me? How could they just forsaken me this way, discard me like I’m nothing?

There was a time, not long ago, where praying would have been my answer. I would pray for the pain to go away, pray for my family to take me back, pray for strength to forgive them…

But after everything, after the beatings, being sold for money, my family took that faith from me. I never doubted anything they said. I believed in all they taught me, just to find all of it was a lie.

My whole life a charade—a means to an end.

All my parents ever wanted was the money and power.

I see this now, but it’s too late.

Now I’m broken, my heart and mind fractured straight down the middle, and there’s nothing that can heal that kind of misery.

Chapter One

Roman

All eyes are on Ivan and me as we make our very first round through the compound he used to run for Rossi. Now that Rossi is dead, Ivan’s taken over the whole fucking operation. Big money is made in this place. All the high-dollar shit is made, kept, and processed here. A lot of things are changing, and a lot of these assholes don't like change.

You know what I say to that? Fuck them.

I groan at the shit Ivan made me wear. My muscles and torso feel so constricted, like I’m wearing a damn straitjacket. He told me it looks good and makes people respect you. The way I see it, people are going to respect me, or they’ll get my fist in their fucking face.

I can’t believe I’m wearing this monkey suit.

“Tell me again why I’m fucking doing this?” I adjust the collar of the stiff shirt and look over to my brother. The fucking bastard’s smirking. I have half a mind to knock the grin right off his face.

“Because I need someone I can trust with me in this place and I sure as hell don’t trust anyone who used to work for Rossi. I already took care of the ones I knew were loyal to him even after his death, but the rest of the men…I just don't know who exactly they are yet. Either way, I’ve already decided I’m not going to let anyone else help me.”

We’ve been walking through this place for a few hours now, and I’m more annoyed now than when I came in. This isn’t my fucking thing. Holding authority over a group of men. I run my gym and that’s it. What Ivan’s asking of me is something I’m not sure I can give him.

We continue to walk around. Ivan wants to make sure everybody knows who I am, and I get it, but fuck, I just want to get out of here and out of these ridiculous clothes. I want my jeans and loose t-shirts back.

“Come on, we can hang out upstairs at my place and relax before we make another walk around. I’ll even have some food brought up,” Ivan offers, and I’m more than happy to go somewhere else where people aren’t fucking staring at me.

As soon as we are inside his apartment, I start taking half my clothes off, leaving me in socks, the dress slacks, and an undershirt. I exhale, and for the first time today, I feel like I can fucking breathe. Ivan shakes his head at me as I flop down on the couch, throwing my legs up on the table in front of me. He orders some food, and a guy brings it up ten minutes later.

As soon as I spot the food, my mouth starts to water. I grab my plate and start to dig in when a knock on the door interrupts us. Ivan groans, getting up to open the door, while I take another bite of my burger, then shove a fry into my mouth, letting the first couple bites settle in my stomach.

Fuck, I’m hungry.

“I’m so sorry to disturb you, boss. We’ve got a slight problem and I’m not sure how you want it handled,” an unfamiliar voice tells my brother.

“Come in, Gabe. Tell me what’s going on while I finish eating my lunch.” Ivan motions for the guy to follow him, then sits back down beside me.

Ivan starts eating his burger while Gabe stands in front of us, unsure of the situation, and noticeably not use to being around Ivan.

She was a tiny little lamb that claimed my heart with one fearful look. I was her captor, the man responsible for breaking her, for preparing her for auction.
She was taken, plucked right off the street and brought to me to be sold at the next auction. Rescuing her from my men was never part of the deal, and neither was bringing her up to my room.
Yet, night after night I did this, refusing to give up the way she made me feel. When I’m with her I feel less like a monster. I can remember the man I used to be before the mob got to me, before all the bad tainted my soul.
But wanting her is forbidden, and keeping her unthinkable. If they find out what I’m doing they’ll kill both of us.
And still…
I want to save her. I want to love her. I was to cherish her.
When the time comes will I be able to let her go? Or will I risk both our lives for a love that I may not deserve?

Prologue

Violet

The music pounds loudly in my ears. It's so loud I can’t hear myself think let alone, hear whatever it is my best friend is trying to say to me. I don’t know why I was so excited about coming here for my birthday. It seemed like such a good idea when my friend’s suggested it.

However, now that I am here everything seems so much less appealing. My ears hurt from the loud music, and my throat is scratchy from the smoke that clings to the air. The skin tight dress and black high heels I’m wearing are getting more uncomfortable with each passing minute. All in all coming here was a shit idea.

Sweat beads against my forehead, as I survey the crowd. Everyone here seems to be way older than me. I’m only eighteen but this club allows people under twenty-one to come in as long as you let them stamp both of your hands.

Some older guys offered to buy me a drink a couple minutes ago and I’m starting to wonder if maybe I should have let him. I really don’t want to get drunk in here and lose my wits, but it's so hot, and I can’t help but wonder if I’d loosen up with a little alcohol in my system.

I grip onto my cell phone tightly in my hands deciding there won't be any drinking for me tonight. I’ll just call Ella and have her pick me up. She’s going to be pissed at me for not telling her what I was doing but she’ll get over it, she always does. I unlock my phone and start scrolling through my messages when a man appears at my side.

“Here.” He says shoving a glass at me. It has some red colored liquid in it and I know better than to take some drink from a random stranger. I shake my head and hold up my hand to motion to him that I am not interested but he just shoves the glass closer to my face.

Annoyance boils deep inside me. I take the glass, hoping it will make the asshole leave. I don’t take a sip, neither do I plan to.

“Want to dance?” The guy leans into me and slurs right next to my ear. He smells of smoke, and sweat and I almost gag at the mixture of scents.

“No, thank you.” I decline politely.

“But I just bought you a drink, the least you can do is dance with me.” He gives me a creepy smile, and I shudder attempting to take a step backward. The entire place is packed, bodies rubbing against each other, making it hard to escape this asshole.

Thinking smart I know I need to find another way to get away from him. My eyes glance over a neon restroom sign off in the distance.

“You right, I’m just going to the bathroom really quick and then I’ll dance with you.” I give him a wide smile and set the drink on the table a few feet away from us.

“Alright, I’ll be waiting right here for you baby.” He slurs, as I start to walk away.

Walking in the direction of the bathroom, I weave between people, pushing and shoving just to get a step ahead. Once I reach the restrooms I turn and start walking back towards the entrance of the club. Music vibrates through me, and I find it harder and harder to breathe with all the bodies around me. I’ll just go outside and call Ella, that way maybe I can tell her I wanted to go to the club but changed my mind. Her shift at the diner will be over in a few minutes, so she’ll be able to swing by here on her way back to the apartment.

Then we can forget like tonight never happened.

I make it through the crowd and walk into the hallway leading outside. There are only a few people lingering near the exit. Nobody seems to be paying me an ounce of attention, all except one man. He is leaning against the far wall, his entire body encased in the shadows, but I can see his eyes scanning me up and down. He’s staring at my body in a way that makes me feel exposed and I don’t like it, not one bit. I make my feet walk faster as I hurry past him, his gaze remaining on me the whole time. As I pass him the hair on the back of my neck stands up, and a bad feeling fills my gut. This guy is pure evil… it oozes out of him, like a bad smell. I can feel it, see it.

The moment I step outside and fresh air fills my lungs I feel a little better. I peer up into the night sky, pressing against the brick exterior wall of the club. I flip my phone around in my sweaty hand to call my sister, but when I scroll down to her name and hit send I realize that I have no signal.

Xander

The gun was heavy in my sweaty hands. I wasn’t afraid of killing my father. I’m sure he knew it was coming far before I decided to do it, but tonight was the night. He wouldn’t hurt Damon and me ever again, and I’d be fucking sure of it.

I walked down the dimly lit hallway, and then down the steps toward the patio.

“I’ve always thought you were the weakest link of this family. It seems the beatings never really did anything to you. You’ve still shown weakness...and weakness just isn’t acceptable in our family.” My father’s voice carries through the house as he talks down to Damon.

Anger surges deep inside me, on the verge of exploding outward. I see the glint of a gun in the moonlight that pours from the night sky as I turn the corner.

“You’re a piece of shit. A monster who will never amount to anything,” Damon spits. “And someday when you’re old and gray, I’m going to treat you the same fucking way you treated me and Xander.”

I can’t see my father’s face, but I’m positive there is a cruel smirk on his lips. I wonder if this is the moment I’ve been dreading. I knew it was coming for a while but I’m not sure this is it until I see my father raise the gun and point it at Damon.

There’s not a damn bone within my body that is scared of killing my father. After all, this is what he had planned for me, for us, right? I wait, watching, to see what his next move is.

“You won’t be doing shit but letting the worms and bugs crawl through your decaying body.” My father flicks the safety and aims the gun. I don’t really understand why Damon still stands there, but he does, his eyes never wavering from Dad’s.

“Don’t make fun about it, just fucking do it,” Damon grits out, darkness resonating out of him. As soon as the words are said, everything seems to slow down.

I don’t know why Damon and our father are fighting or what it was even about, but when I see him squeeze the trigger on his gun, I know I have to end him. He’d hurt us for so many years, abused and killed those we loved.

He was the real monster, and I was ready to put a bullet in his head.

Lifting my gun, I watched in horror as our father shot Damon in the shoulder. Maybe it was his intention, or maybe it wasn’t. I don’t really know. I didn’t really care or stop to ask. In fact, I was past caring. He deserved to die.

Flicking the safety off, my eyes met Damon’s and for a fraction of a second, he sees me. The real me, the man who had spent years taking beatings so his life could be easier. The poison of this world was slowly seeping into my veins, but it didn’t have to taint Damon.

I pulled the trigger without another thought, watching as the bullet went straight into my father’s chest. When he started to fall over, his knees slamming onto the hard ground, I walked over to Damon, gripping him by the arm. I looked straight into my father’s eyes, right into the dark orbs that had promised me nothing but death and pain all my life.

“Looks like the worms and bugs are going to be crawling through you soon.” Then I shot him again, right in the stomach. If the shot to the chest didn’t kill him, then he’d most likely bleed out. His mouth popped open and a vacant look appeared in his eyes.

You could say that was the day I became fully invested in the man I was—the dark monster he had crafted and molded me to be.

The day I took over the Rossi Empire.

Chapter One

Ella

A million scenarios are running rampant in my mind as I try and sit up and stare into vacant space. Each one has the same ending, with me dead.

Tied up in an empty room, I gaze down at my body. Fear trickles down my spine when I take in the revealing lingerie that covers little pieces of my creamy white skin.

Who dressed me up in these?

I’d never wear anything like this… never.

There’s a pounding directly behind my eyes like I got hit by a bus or something. I might have. I don’t remember much of how I got here or even where I am.

I was looking for my sister, my sole purpose in life since she’d gone missing a month ago. She is the only family I have left, and I have a compelling need to find her.

For so long, that was all I could think about… finding her, making sure she was okay, but now I’ve gotten myself into something dangerous, something scary.

My surroundings are eerily quiet, like there is no one else in the bedroom, or maybe even the whole house? I don’t know if that makes me feel better or worse, to be left alone in silence.

Damon Rossi is a ruthless leader, and an even more ruthless man to my body, and heart. The moment I meet him I know he could kill me with nothing more than his hands. He controls the room, demands attention and when my brother is murdered for a debt he owes I’m forced into his protection. But that doesn’t mean he has to care about me.
Or pretend he values my life, which he doesn’t. He’s a savage, over the top, and scary as hell, and even as I’m pushed further and further down the rabbit hole and into his dark dangerous world of criminals, thieves, and sex. I cling to him, knowing he’s the only one that can protect me from them all.
And yet when secrets are exposed, and lines are crossed Damon proves to me just how deep his protection for me goes… but his protection comes with a price that I cannot afford, and so I become his property making the chances of escaping this dark world slip further and further away from me.
Damon might protect me from his enemies but who’s to protect my heart from falling for him?
**This is book two in the Broken Heros Series. It contains a happily ever after and is a complete standalone. It contains dark themes such as dubious content, sexual themes, violence, and swearing. Do not read this book if you dislike antiheroes.*

Keira

I stare at my brother's lifeless body on the floor of my apartment. I know what I need to do next, but I can’t move. My feet remain cemented to the floor, my brown eyes moving over the scene before me. There is blood…so much blood.

I bite into my bottom lip hard—hard enough to draw my own blood. I won’t scream. I can’t. Leo told me if someone ever came for him, I was to go to a man, one of his friends, and he would protect me, but I can’t remember his name.

My stomach rolls, bile rising into my throat. I place a hand over my mouth to stop the impending vomit.

My brother is dead.

My chest tightens; my hands fist at my sides. My brother is dead. Actually dead. We joked about this moment many, many times, but looking down at his lifeless body, his vacant stare, I know this isn’t a joke.

Start moving, a little voice inside my head says.

I look at the message the bastards left on my fridge. The sticky note shakes in my hands as I read the words over and over.

I’ll be back for you.

I shiver involuntarily. I need to find the man my brother wanted me to go to. I have a feeling he’s the only one who can protect me now.

With unsteady hands, I pull my phone out and go to my emergency information. I created a small doc simply for this very thing. Leo had only given me a name and address, saying it would be enough.

But how can I show up on someone's doorstep with this kind of thing? Leo said the person would understand—they’d know why I was there—but I didn’t believe that…not one bit. Too afraid to go into my bedroom or even stand inside the kitchen another minute, I walk out the door, closing it quietly behind me.

Tears fall from my eyes, staining my cheeks. I have never felt so much pain and confusion all at once. My lungs seem to deflate, refusing to fill no matter how many breaths I take.

I make it two steps down the stairs when I hear voices coming from the level below me. I spot two guys talking, both with accents—Russian maybe. I’m not concerned until the words meet my ears.

“The boss said he wants the sister for himself, so don’t fuck her up too bad.” The men are big and burly, way bigger than me, and definitely stronger. If they get their hands on me, I’m as good as gone.

Move, Kiera! My brother's voice fills my head as I try to stop the tensing of my muscles. I have to get out of here. If they catch me…I shove the thought away before it takes root.

As soft as my feet allow, I tiptoe backward, away from the staircase. I slip my shoes off and start walking up the stairs in my socks. Staying close to the outside, I make sure they can’t see me if they decide to look up through the middle of the stairs.

With my lip caught between my teeth, I hold in the scream that wants to rip from my throat. Fear consumes me, my muscles remain rigid, but I continue onward. I walk all the way to the top floor and take the emergency stairwell down.

I’ll be safe, hidden from their gazes—a secret passing through. My entire body shakes as I take the steps two at a time, my eyes passing over my shoulder every few seconds, causing me to trip. Landing against the railing, it digs into my ribs. I need to pay better attention or I'm going to get caught.

I sigh in relief when I make it down the stairs. I am only in my first year of college. I’m supposed to be partying, hanging out with other people my age, not discovering my dead brother's body, or running away from two monsters who want to drag me back to their boss. The image of being attacked by one of them flickers in my mind.

No. I will myself to calm down. I’m right there, hanging on the very edge of losing control. I want to cry, scream, yell, but I know none of those things will happen. Pushing through the back doors of the apartment complex, I run down the street, my backpack still resting heavily against my back.

I sprint down the street and hide behind a group of trees before I decide to stop and catch my breath. My little legs do nothing to help me when it comes to running. I pull out my cell phone and enter the address into the map.

A little icon pops up on the screen, confirming it works. I sag against the tree, waiting for it to load.

Would they track my phone? Who are they to my brother? Dozens of questions rattle off inside my head. I didn’t even say goodbye to him. My gaze drops down to my phone. The map finally loaded.
The day I meet Hero Miller I know he’s unlike anyone I’ve ever met before. Sheltered and raised around no one but my family all my life his darkness draws me in.
He was raised with violence, it oozes from deep within him. I was raised by the bible my naiveness to save him proving just that.
He scares me, and excites me all at once. He’s obsessed and guarded. He protects me, and hurts me. He pushes and I pull, but only because he doesn’t think he’s good enough.
His warnings are clear. He tells me about his past, and the people he’s killed. He tells me about the things he wants to do to me…about the things he will do if I stay.
The goodness in me wants to cure the stain of dark on his heart, but I’m not strong enough. The closer I get to Hero the further I get dragged into his darkness and eventually it starts to swallow me whole.
Murder. Crime. Money. Sex. It surrounds us, and when Hero’s past comes barreling towards us it won’t be him that pays the ultimate price..it will be me.
I glance down at my phone to check the time. Fifteen past six. She was supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago. Every minute I sit here, it makes me more irritated, more impatient.

This small room with its bare walls reminds me too much of the prison cells I spent the last seven years in. The seconds tick by slow. The walls feel like they’re closing in around me—inching toward me like they are about to swallow me whole.

Not only am I one of the oldest students here, but also one of the dumbest. Thanks to the lack of proper education the justice system provided me with, I could barely pass my classes.

If it hadn’t been Mom’s wish for me to go to college, I would get up, walk my happy ass right off campus, and never look back.

I’m not here to make friends or kiss ass. Half the things I’ve seen and done, these assholes wouldn't be able to handle.

Death. Murder. Pain. Grief. These people have no idea the shit-balls life could throw at you.

The door handle to the room jiggles, and I sneer at it. I should just get up and walk out of here. I'm sure the girl isn't going to be coming anyway.

“Hi! I’m so sorry. I got lost, then…”

The words I intended to speak pause in thin air. All my irritation and anger disappears, replaced with something else—something I've never felt before.

It’s an emotion I can’t quite pinpoint. Instead of focusing on it, I take in the tiny woman before me.

She has fragile features, soft, doll-like. Coal black lashes frame her big blue eyes, and those eyes…fuck, they’re fixated on mine, beckoning me onward. Her coffee-colored hair is braided over one shoulder. It looks soft. I want to run my fingers through it.

What the fuck? I shove the thought away. My gaze drops to her full lips, half parted with whatever words she’d planned to say.

She isn't wearing a speck of makeup. Her clothes aren't eye-catching and don't show off her body, but damn…she is perfect.

“I—I’m sorry…” Her creamy white cheeks grow pink with embarrassment.

“You’re late,” I announce gruffly, as if she didn't already know this.

She sighs, visibly trying to calm herself.

I’ve been through enough shit to know when someone is on the verge of a panic attack. The look in her doe eyes tells me she’s close.

“Please don't tell anyone. I need this job. I really, really do.” Tears form in those orbs, and the anguish in her voice tells me she isn't lying.

Fuck! This isn't what I need right now. I’m not in a good place, and the moment I open my mouth, I know I'll ask her what the hell her story is and how I can help her...and that's just not what I need.

Shutting my brain down, I let my dick talk for me. “Calm down. You can make it up to me, baby. I promise I won’t tell anybody. All you need to do is come over here and kiss me.”

Her eyes go impossibly wide at my request. “K-Kiss y-you?” she stutters, staring at me like I just asked her to get on her knees and give me a blow job.

Shit. The image of her sucking me off invades my mind, making it hard to think about anything but her plum, angel-like lips around my cock. Shifting in my seat, I try to ignore how uncomfortably hard my dick is pushing against the zipper of my jeans, begging for me to let him come out to play. “So, what will it be? Kiss me or possibly lose your job?” I know I’m being an unreasonable asshole, but it's hard to be anything else when that's what I’ve been for so long.

She inches forward, like a newborn deer taking its first steps. Her legs seem so wobbly and unsure. For a moment, I think she might fall, and prepare myself to catch her.

Never breaking eye contact, she makes it all the way in front of my chair without falling over her own two feet. She clenches the strap of her backpack so tight, her knuckles turn white and her hand quivers.

Fear shines prominent in her eyes, but there’s also curiosity and excitement. I hold my hand out to her, and she looks down at it in wonder. Her fingers ease up on the strap before she lets her backpack slide down her shoulder and drop to the floor.

Her small, shaking hand reaches for mine. The second her soft hand touches my much larger, rougher one, her trembling subsides. I gently pull her down into my lap, and her leg brushes against my hardened dick, almost making me come in my pants.
