Welcome to Evergreen Valley – where the mountains are high, the men are hotter, and love is just around the corner.

Hannah Lee is the queen of cupcakes, with her bakery at the heart of town—and her heart locked tight. But when Elias Lawson, the city’s too-hot-to-handle health inspector, struts in with his clipboard and a wicked grin, he’s ready to turn her world upside down.

He’s here to inspect her bakery, but all he can think about is tasting something sweet—and it’s not just her famous brownies.

With his smoldering good looks and smooth-talking charm, Elias is about to prove that rules were made to be broken. Especially when the sparks between them burn hotter than the ovens in the back.

Can Hannah keep her cool, or will this big-city heartthrob tempt her into something deliciously dangerous?

Small town girl meets city boy

Opposites attract

Forced proximity

Workplace romance

Sassy heroine, alpha hero

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

hannah

I love baking.

I grew up with it. Countless memories with my mother, my aunts, my grandmother, all over a hot oven, creating such delicious and sweet treats.

It’s become my life’s work, and some would say I have a dream job, being surrounded by sweets and all the joy they bring.

Except it’s still a job. And the Sweet Stoppe is still a business.

So I’m in the back, hunched over a laptop with a bunch of spreadsheets open and doing all the business expenses to make sure I don’t make any sudden bad financial decisions.

It’s not like the bakery is living on the edge. It’s always made a tidy little profit, more than enough for me to live on.

But the books are still stuff that has to be managed, and I have to decide what special recipes keep getting made, and which go back into the recipe rolodex, retired for a few years and that I may bring back later to see if tastes have changed.

A knock sounds on my door and I shoot my eyes up over the laptop. The door isn’t closed, but Lavender is just the type to be that considerate. “You got a moment, Hannah?”

“I always got a moment for you, Lavender,” I smirk.

Lavender’s a bit of an outlier when it comes to most of the folks in Evergreen Valley. She’s going around with purple - she’d call it lavender - hair and looks amazed at everything around her. Possibly because she’s not originally from here or anywhere like here. This rich city girl just wandered into my bakery one day and asked for a job, and I couldn’t think of a good reason not to hire her.

She’s been one heck of a hand in the year or so since. A lot has changed for her in that time, such as finding love, getting married, and the very, incredibly large round bump that she’s been carrying around for the past couple of months. She approaches my desk very delicately and takes a seat. “I got some bad news for you, Hannah.”

“It’s finally time to take your maternity leave?”

Lavender is slightly surprised by my words. “Uh, yes. How did you know?”

I gesture toward her abdomen.

“Oh, right. But maybe I wanted to work as much as possible. Some women do that, you know.”

“Some do. But I’d feel ashamed of myself as a boss if I let someone so pregnant work until their water broke.”

She lets out a long sigh. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to be a hassle for you.”

“You’re not a hassle. What do you think I hired Melanie for?”

“To help run the bakery?”

“So that you could take off without feeling guilty that you’re putting me in a bad spot.”

Lavender’s shoulders sink, she seems a bit relieved by my words. “Thank you, Hannah. You’re the sweetest boss I could hope for.”

“Well, I do deal in the sweet,” I say, my smirk growing.

“I think I got two weeks before I have to take off," she says.

“Take off when you need to, Lavender. But I won’t say no to any help you can give me.”

I finish off the work I need to do on the laptop and close it. The two of us get up and go out to the counter, where my new hire, Melanie, is tending to the register.

She’s just come back from college, and has that ‘What am I going to do with my life?’ phase that we all have, and I think it’s especially worse as someone who’s gone to college and comes back to a small town.

“Four dollars, sir,” she says to the man across from her.

“Oh, let me get my wallet.” The doddering old man who is my current customer was Ben, who ran the local gas station. Evergreen Valley was the kind of small town where everyone knows everyone, and there’s usually only one gas station and one Chinese restaurant; and up until recently? One bakery.

Ben paid for his muffin and took the scent in. This is his routine. He’s here at 10 am every morning. If you want to get gas without your credit card at that point? Tough cookies, Ben needed his breaks. We always made sure to have a fresh one ready for him with how punctual he is.

He takes a bite. “Oh, this is heaven. This is what gets me out of bed every day.”

“That sounds awfully depressing,” Melanie says.

I glance at her with scorn, silently telling her not to judge the customers.

Ben cradles his muffin. “Your muffins are just that good. I don’t know what I’d do without them. Thank you, Hannah.”

He takes his leave, heading out the front door, until another semi-familiar face makes his way in. This one is in a suit and about half Ben’s age. Arguably, he’s twice as pathetic, though. He clears his throat. “Hannah Lee of Hannah’s Sweet Stoppe?”
📚 Tropes You’ll Love in "Their Rustic Retreat":

💖 Forced Proximity: A little too close for comfort? More like just close enough! Watch the sparks fly when they’re stuck together.

🚨 Secret Past: He’s hiding something, and it’s juicy. Can love survive when the truth comes out?

🌲 Rustic Setting: Forget fancy hotels—this love story unfolds in the woods, where passion is as wild as the scenery.

💥 Insta-Chemistry: One look, and it’s game over. Prepare for an explosive connection that neither of them saw coming!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

serena

It’s damn near a torrent of fur sometimes when I walk into the kennel.

We try to train them well, to get them to not rush people when they walk into the room, but they’re always so excited to see me. At least the training has stuck enough that they know not to knock me over, and instead all are excitedly looking at me with wildly shaking tails.

There’s one dog in particular I’m here for, though.

Reuben. My overly happy and excited golden retriever. He’s near climbing me, and I’m ruffling his fur. “Yes, yes, I know. I was so cruel for making you stay in here with all of the other dogs.”

I had just gotten back from a trip out of state to go look at a veterinary school to pursue my dream. I wasn’t too sure of the one I’d visited, but the truth is, I’m not too certain about any of them. The idea of being so far from home is daunting.

As such, I had to keep Reuben here with the rest of the dogs. One of the things us Moores did in Evergreen Valley was run a place for people to keep their dogs when they had to go somewhere without them, as well as some dog training and the like.

“You’re my little prince, and I wouldn’t make you stay with all these peasants if I didn’t really have to,” I say, the so-called peasant dogs ignoring my insult. I liked them all the same, too, and the feeling was certainly mutual. I usually took them out on walks, gave them treats, and fed them.

I always wanted to do more, though. I loved animals of all shapes and sizes, and while our home cared for a lot of them, whenever we had a sick or badly injured one enter into our care, we had to call in a veterinarian from Smithport. Evergreen Valley is such a small town that we didn’t have a vet who worked here, full time, outside of a few here or there, who were strictly contracted to rich folks and their fancy horses.

I tend to the dogs, giving them their morning meal and prepping Reuben for a walk. We step out, and I look over the family homestead. I guess it’s sort of a ranch with how we focus on raising and training animals, but given that Evergreen Valley is surrounded by woods and mountains, the term ranch seemed far too western.

It is home, though, including all of the people I love.

Including Hawk, the complete and total asshole that he is.

He’s sitting at one of our picnic tables, enjoying breakfast with his wife, Lavender. They met last year and fell quickly in love. He and his friends have been working on constructing a home for Hawk and Lavender, but there’s a particularly rough phase of the construction presently, so he and Lavender are back in the family home for now, if only for just a few weeks.

I’d never admit it to their faces, but I’m jealous as all hell of him and what he has. He’s so sweet to Lavender, and she’s sweet right back. The way they hold one another, the way they look into one another’s eyes. It’s so bloody saccharine sweet, it makes me want to puke, but at the same time, I want it. So damn bad.

Yes, I’m only nineteen. Yes, I’m aware that in today’s world, sometimes people don’t find forever love until they are, like, forty years old. But call me selfish. I just wish it were me, and I wish it were me right now.

“Serena?” Hawk calls out, noticing that I’m staring. “Are you going to join us, or are you going to keep your creepy voyeurism thing going on?”

I glare at my brother, wanting to go over there and smack him upside the head.

Instead, I decide to do the normal, if incredibly stupid, thing of doing as he asks.

“Reuben is joining us, too, I see,” Lavender says, my dog betraying me to go get the ear ruffles from her. I didn’t hate her or anything, but I guess my jealousy shines through in the strangest ways at times.

“Did Frankfurt State not knock your socks off or anything?” Hawk says as he offers me an apple from the fruit bowl the two brought with them.

“It was... well, it was a school. That’s what I can say about it. It’s the most boring school to ever go to.”

“That bad, huh?” he replies with a raised eyebrow.

“It’s not that it’s all that bad. I think they focus a bit too much on cows and horses and stuff. It’s way out West. And I wanted to focus more on companion animals like dogs, cats, birds, and the like.”

“We get horses and cows here sometimes.”

“Yeah, but it’s more of an oddity. Most of the cows can go to the ranches on the outskirts of town.”

Book 4 of the Men of Evergreen Mountains!
This is wild, fertile land, where the men are ready to whisk their women to bed.
No hook-ups or one-night stands.
Here in the Evergreen Mountains, the men are fiercely loyal.
Here, love lasts a lifetime.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

lavender

“How much longer on that cake, Lavender? We needed it a half hour ago.” The exasperated voice of my boss, Hannah, calls out to me as I’m rushing about, trying to get all the cake decoration supplies ready.

“It’s in the oven. I can’t make it bake any faster.”

Hannah nibbles on her bottom lip. She’s experienced enough to know this to be true, but it still annoys her.

This is a cake for a friend, and it had to be perfect. I may have gotten nervous and screwed up the batter a few times when measuring it out. Usually a little extra flour here or there or too much or too little vanilla wouldn’t stop me. For Tabitha’s wedding cake, however, I wanted perfection.

She’s only going to get married once, after all.

Hopefully, anyway. This Fox guy seems pretty swell, and aside from some weirdness about his folks, there aren’t any massive red flags.

I pull the cake out, needing it to cool a bit before I bust out the decorations. We didn’t have a whole lot of orders today, outside of Tabitha’s wedding, so my job boils down to a lot of waiting for stuff to be at the right temperature.

Hannah poking her head in, trying to rush what can’t be rushed, is annoying but understandable. This is her bakery. She’s been working hard at making it work. She’s such a sweetheart, but I can see how sometimes business in such a small town, like Evergreen Valley, is a bit stressful.

Especially when Hannah hires weird girls who show up out of nowhere, dressed far too nice compared to the rest of the town.

“We need an ETA on the wedding cake,” Hannah calls out to the back. I look through the shelves to see who she’s talking to.

And my heart skips a beat.

Most of the guys around here, young and old, are a bit roughneck. Lots of flannel, big trucks, boots, and dirt. All of them are somewhat musclular, either huge, bulging, hard-working muscles or just some of that good, old-fashioned big-guy strength. They’re all handsome in their own way, but one guy stands out.

He’s dressed like the rest of them, which strikes me as odd, given that supposedly he’s going to a wedding once he gets this cake. But I guess up here this is as formal as you need to be. That’s not what gets me, though. No. It’s because his handsomeness far surprasses any others I’ve seen. He’s especially rugged, his shoulders broad, and his face looking seasoned from all the time he’s spent outdoors. His eyes keep track of everything around the room, his awareness never waning. For some, he would come across as being paranoid or anxious, but for him, it’s second nature to be on edge.

If anything makes him seem awkward, it’s being in a bakery, in the heart of civilization. He looks like he’d be most comfortable deep in a forest, tracking a mammoth, with a pointy stick in hand.

And I mean that in the best way possible.

Then, he sees me looking at him through the shelves. I look away, bashful as ever.

“Lavender, how much longer for the cake?”

“It’s just about cooled; I’m getting to it,” I say, in a hurry.

I get to work. I want it to be perfect, but knowing the wedding ceremony is quickly approaching, I can’t delay any longer. I can’t let perfection be the enemy of good-enough any longer, but I’m still going to push myself to make it the best it can be.

Thankfully, I don’t make any major mistakes. None at all, actually, if you don’t count mistakes that can be covered up with an extra buttercream flower.

I build it up, delicate construction. Hannah comes in to make sure I stack the layers just right. And when it’s all done, we’ve finally got the cake ready.

“All right, it looks good to go.” She slaps me on the back. “But make sure you take some of the baking supplies with you. Just in case you need to make any sudden repairs.”

There’s this weird intersection of bakery and construction when it comes to these sorts of cakes that I’ll never fully understand, but I accept nonetheless.

“I’m counting on you to make my bakery look good, Lavender.”

“Yes, ma’am,” I say with a nod.

Together, we carry the cake out to the truck, where our customer is waiting to pick it up. I bashfully try to avert my eyes from him as we secure the baked goods.

Then comes a hole in my plan to try to avoid having him notice my attraction.

“Lavender, Hawk here is going to be the one to drive you up to the wedding.”
Opposites attract when this business man falls for this forest-loving girl.

They fall hard and fast, but is Fox keeping Tabitha a secret for a reason?
He is keeping his family from her, and worse…
When the truth is revealed, will it be too late?

This is wild, fertile land, where the men are ready to whisk their women to bed.
No hook-ups or one-night stands.
Here in the Evergreen Mountains, the men are fiercely loyal.
Here, love lasts a lifetime.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

fox

“You gotta know that you’re dressed far too nice for the occasion, Fox.” Bear is sitting on the edge of his truck’s tailgate, a bottle of soda pop in hand, half-drank. “Your jeans don’t even have any holes in them.”

I let out a long sigh. For a rural farmers market? Yeah, I stood out like a sore thumb. I’m clean and pristine, a button up denim shirt, a fresh haircut and fresher face. I usually keep a bit of stubble, but my father insisted I keep up appearances for one of the recent meetings.

I’m the heir to the throne after all.

Even if I don’t want to be.

This is compared to ol Bear, who’s clothing looks like he’s been wearing it for years, even though it’s all very well taken care of. You can see the wear and tear of everything, and the dirt that’s dug into his boots.

“What are you even coming here for? I usually don’t see you coming to the farmer’s markets,” Bear says. “Got an itch for that super fresh produce?”

I laugh. “Not so much, no. I’m sure I’ll get some, but I’m mainly here to pick up some huckleberry jam my mother picked up when coming through here once. Says she hasn’t been able to pick up anything else like it and has been jonesing for it pretty hard.”

Bear slaps me on the back. “Well, take in the sights and sounds. People are going to take you for a city slicker, but they’re still nice enough.”

“I did grow up here, Bear. You don’t have to treat me like an alien.”

“Just saying. Not everyone’s going to remember you. Few will. Probably give you the same shit I gave you.”

“That’s so reassuring, Bear. Really.”

I grew up right alongside Bear. Hunter and Hawk too. We were our own little clique coming up, inseparable best buds. Then my Dad gets some money in, and we immediately moved away for a few years. I missed most of high school with them, but then my old man came back to Evergreen Valley for business, and started digging his claws deep into the area.

Just this time, our family’s net worth is about a thousand times higher than it was before.

Money shouldn’t change much about you, but I can’t help feeling like I’ve drifted away from my old friends. I adore them deeply and still think of them as brothers, but I have doubts if they feel the same way.

Bear and I head into the market. People all around us are hawking their produce. Apples are the most common crop, and lots of the farmers have their own takes on them. There’s lots of potatoes and carrots too, huge ones that I contemplate getting since my mother loves making a fine beef stew out of the freshest ingredients.

I find the lady selling the jam and pick up several jars, and she carefully sets them in a cloth bag to carry them around in too. That’s nice of her, it would have been awkward to carry around a half dozen jam jars in my arms as I went along for the rest of my trip.

The smell of various foodstuffs fill the air too. I smell what are sure to be some damn good french fries, some gyros, plenty of hot dogs, which I’m sure are made from sausages made from their own pigs, cows, and chickens. It’s a jarring shift from the city, and I have to say, I missed it a great deal.

Bear’s got two hot dogs and a cone full of curly fries on hand, like we’re at a damn carnival. Can’t say I blame him with how good they look, and when I look at him, he shrugs my way. “What? This is for Char too. She’ll love this.”

I smirk and shake my head. “Should get it to her while it's still hot then.”

“She’s with Savvy and her other friends, they have a booth with their arts and crafts stuff.”

We go to another end of the farmer’s market. This place is filled with people selling everything that isn’t meant to be eaten. Lots of woven quilts, finely made sweaters and shirts. Hunter sells some of his own carpentry work here sometimes, even though most of what he makes is just for himself and family. Past old Grandma Diana’s blankets, we finally reach the recent spouses of both Hunter and Bear.

“May I tempt you with a gourmet, artisan, home cooked organic hot dog, babe?” he asks, presenting one of the franks to his wife.

“Can... can hot dogs be organic?” She says, accepting his gift.

“Hell if I know. But if it’s from around here, it’s way better than anything you’re going to get at a grocery store.”

As charming as the scene is, my attention is swiftly snapped away by something far more interesting.

She’s working on sprucing up one of the displays of what I’m sure is her own work, given she has a very similar necklace to the one she’s selling around her neck. Her hair, long wild curls, is the color of sun-kissed honey, it swaying as she moves her head, letting those hazel eyes of hers meet mine, and letting me see the hints of gold and green within them, the green akin to the leaves of forest, bathed in sunlight.
BEAR & CHAR … BOOK 2 IN THE MEN OF EVERGREEN MOUNTAIN SERIES

This is wild, fertile land, where the men are ready to whisk their women to bed.
No hook-ups or one-night stands.
Here in the Evergreen Mountains, the men are fiercely loyal.
Here, love lasts a lifetime.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

char

The gas gauge needle inches lower and lower, leaving me anxious that at any moment, my car is going to sputter out and die, leaving me stranded on the side of this rural backwater road.

I am grateful Savvy and Hunter insisted I come out here as I make a new plan for my life. The old diner where Savvy used to work, with me as the manager, just went out of business. Without family to fall back on, I feel like Savvy and her new husband are my guardian angels.

I reach the end of the road, and the car’s engine is turned off, thankfully because I wanted it to, not because I’m out of gas. Hunter says he has a jerry can full of fuel for me to help me get to the next gas station, when I texted showing my concern about how I couldn’t even afford an extra gallon at the nearest filling station.

The sun shines on my face as I step out of the car and take in the fresh forest air. I’m incredibly jealous of what Savvy has up here. I’d never let her know it, but her whole fairy tale of getting swept up by a hot, sexy mountain man is something I wished would happen to me. But lightning never strikes twice. I’ll have to find my own, one way or another.

Hunter and Savvy have this lovely little cabin in Evergreen Valley, one that’s rapidly expanding. Hunter has talent as a carpenter and is putting it to use on their home, and the growing little family they have going: something I’m reminded of as Savvy comes out onto the porch, a spring in her step, and a bit messy herself. Being a new mother will do that to anyone.

I’m then hit with the sweet smell of barbecue, my stomach rumbling. A diet consisting of ramen and peanut butter sandwiches will do that to you. I’m feeling a craving for meat at that moment.

“Char, you made it. Your car didn’t break down!”

Savvy rushes out, not too fast, and wraps her arms around me.

“Thankfully. Although, I think making even one wrong turn could have changed that.”

She looks me over, likely seeing my tired eyes and complete lack of makeup. “You look rough as hell, girl.”

“Thanks, I didn’t need you to point that out.”

She shakes her head, giving me that usual sassy glare.

I pause. “Sorry, it’s been really hard. I didn’t mean to snap at you. I know you mean well.”

Savvy and I have a lot in common. We come from broken homes with controlling parents who expected respect while never doing anything to earn it. I tried to look out for her when she first started at the diner, and I think I may have come off as slightly abrasive. But that’s in the past now, and she’s quickly become my best friend.

“Don’t worry about it. I know everything’s been rough for you, Char.” She smiles, giving me a sisterly side hug. “Hunter’s out back. As I’m sure you can smell, he’s got some brisket smoking.”

“Oh Lord, I can definitely smell it. How much longer do I have to wait? It reminded me of how hungry I am.”

She pulls out her phone briefly. “From when he last told me, it’ll be ready in about an hour. Got some macaroni and potato salad if you really can’t wait.”

I smirk. “Taking the diner’s secret recipe with you, huh?”

“A good recipe is a good recipe. No matter if it comes from a greasy spoon or a five-star restaurant.”

I hear another vehicle rumbling up behind me. Savvy's made a lot more friends besides me since she’s moved out to Evergreen Valley, mostly through Hunter, but I wasn’t expecting to meet any of them today.

My eyes roll over the big green pickup truck behind me. It’s taken a lot of off-road wear and tear, from what I can gather, but hearing its engine suggests that it's taken care of where it truly counts. Not that I was any sort of truck aficionado or anything, but anyone who rolled up to the diner in a pickup that was looking pristine and off the lot usually ended up being a problem customer, so I’d developed a bit of prejudice against that type.

When I see who steps out from the driver's side, prejudice is the last thing on my mind. A chestnut-haired, barrel-bodied individual steps out—and man, what a man. He’s got those big blue eyes, a soft gaze, and a square jaw with a sexy little bit of stubble. I’m smitten as I see him, and suddenly wish I'd went all out and gotten made up.

“You didn’t tell me there would be company,” I whisper to Savvy.

“I didn’t say there wouldn’t. Bear’s good people. Don’t worry about it so much.”

Bear? If I was left alone in the woods with either a man or a bear, one look at this sexy fella and I know what I would choose.

This is wild, fertile land where the men are ready to whisk their women to bed.
No hook-ups or one-night stands.
Here in the Evergreen Mountains, the men are fiercely loyal.
Here, love lasts a lifetime.
Now … let's turn up the heat in their steamy cabin...

*rescued/protected
*alpha male
*true love

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

savannah

My feet ache, my back aches, and my face aches. I didn’t even know the third one was even possible, but putting in long shifts as a waitress has revealed a whole lot that I wish I didn’t have to learn.

It’s probably all the forced smiling I have to do. Those are muscles, too, and get worn out like any other. It just doesn’t feel right to think that “smile fatigue” could really be a thing though.

I’m glad my shift is over for the day and that I’m finally driving home. Thunder cracks in the sky. A storm is brewing, and I’m glad that I’m dodging the worst of it. As I pull into the parking lot, and shut off the old busted Ford, only one thing is keeping me going, letting me put one foot in front of the other to climb those old steps to my father’s and my old apartment.

That chicken Alfredo.

Yesterday, I found a recipe online. It looked absolutely fantastic, and I followed it perfectly. The result was every bit good as advertised, and having another big bowl of leftovers is getting me through the day. It feels kind of pathetic to have that be the only thing keeping me going, but you have to look forward to what you can sometimes.

I step into my home, a small apartment with one and a half bedrooms. How do you have half a bedroom? I can’t call the place I sleep a full bedroom. It doesn’t deserve such a title.

The entire place smells of depression. The scent of booze, and of other substances, the types that were illegal just a few years ago. All of it is a damn mess. Filthy dishes, dust, crumbs anywhere and everywhere. I haven’t had the energy to clean up with all the extra hours I’ve been putting in at the restaurant, and he certainly wasn’t going to help any.

It was a place to sleep, I remind myself. I get through the day. I hang on. I hope something better can come along, trying to push myself toward them where I can. I wash a bowl and fork, before going to the fridge. It’s a mess, too, but I start to dig around for my chicken Alfredo, figuring Dad must have just pushed it back farther.

It’s not there. A bit of panic hits me as I look over to the sink, and see that the plastic container where I had put my pasta last night is sitting there, empty, not even with soap and water to soak it.

No. I told him that was mine. That I was looking forward to eating out of that for the next few days.

Then he goes and does this. I ask him to not do one thing, and still he goes and does it.

I’m shaking with frustration. Is it too much to ask for the person I live with to respect my wishes?

“Savvy, my little sweetie,” I hear from behind me. It was once a voice that brought me joy, but has now only brought me misery.

My father, Jack. He’s a damn wreck. Wearing a stained T-shirt and sweatpants with the same grubbiness, shambles up to me. “Dad, I told you to leave the chicken Alfredo for me,” I say, trying to keep my cool.

“What? What else was I supposed to eat?”

“I don’t know. The canned soup and frozen pizzas that you usually go for?”

“But that Alfredo was right there. You can’t expect me to resist it when it’s right there.”

“Yes, I can. I can expect you to have the tiniest bit of self-control.”

This is why I can’t have nice things. Why every time I push myself to make something fancier than the ordinary, it all ends in tears.

“Listen, it’s no big deal,” he says. It shouldn’t be a big deal, no. But for me? It feels like the biggest deal. I can’t understand why. “Look, Savvy, I need, like, fifty bucks.”

I’m trembling in place, my body getting hot as I look at him.

He’s been unemployed for God knows how long. Nothing but a few odd jobs here and there to barely keep the rent paid. He said he’s waiting for the right job to come along for his qualifications, but it’s been a year. Take something. Anything. I can’t keep this up alone.
