The last echoes of daylight caught the movement of the ocean, the never-ending kaleidoscope of colors swirling under the fading light.

I sipped my scotch, appreciating the smooth, rich flavor as it slipped down my throat. I contemplated my life as I watched daylight bleed into night—Katy’s favorite time of day. It always seemed so odd that someone so filled with light should prefer the inkiness of dark around her, but that was my Katy. Zigging when I expected her to zag. Surprising me at every turn—the way she had our entire relationship.

Behind me, from somewhere in the house, I could hear Katy’s muffled voice speaking, the sound of her laughter bringing a smile to my face. No doubt she was talking to Gracie or Heather about our upcoming trip to Toronto. As usual, my wife was excited to see our girls, and I had to admit, I matched her feelings. No matter the time, their age, or how close together the visits were, I missed them—all my children. Only Matthew resided close, living here in Victoria. The twins, Penny and Gavin, were both married, Gavin living in Calgary with his wife Amanda, and Penny with her husband Philip in England. Matthew was still single, married to his career of being a doctor. Katy fretted over him all the time, but I had a feeling he would find his other half when he was ready. He had always done things to his own beat. Shyer than the rest of my brood, single-minded in all his endeavors, he was smart, determined, and driven.

I took another sip, feeling a swell of gratitude. My family was all doing well. I was about to retire, and we were headed to see our daughters and our adopted family in Ontario. After years of living together, Heather and Reed had finally decided to get married. Low-key and simple, the ceremony would take place at the winery where most of the kids had gotten married.

The slide of the patio door made me look over my shoulder. My wife stepped onto the deck, a glass of wine in hand. Even after all these years, my breath caught in my throat as I looked at her. How I had ever thought her to be plain was a mystery. I had been blind. Katy was beautiful. The years had been kind to her, softening the edges of her youth and giving her the glow of maturity. Silver and gray streaks were woven in with her dark tresses, a few tiny laugh lines scattered around her brilliant blue eyes that had never faded made her look mischievous. She was still small and shapely, fitting under my arm perfectly. She smiled at me, the love she personified filling her gaze as she approached.

I held out my hand, pulling her close and dipping my head to kiss her.

“Hey, sweetheart.”

“I thought I heard you come in.”

“You were on the phone. I grabbed a drink and came out to see the sunset.”

She smiled and took a sip of her wine. “I was talking to Heather. She is anxious for us to get there.”

“Everything okay?”

“Yes. She just misses us.”

I nuzzled her head. “You, especially. I’m sure she wants her mom around as the wedding gets closer.”

Katy chuckled. “They aren’t even calling it a wedding, Richard. A nuptial party, I think is how Reed phrased it.”

“Whatever. They’re finally getting married.” I sighed.

“You are so old-fashioned.” She patted my chest. “Who knew under the veneer of the modern, arrogant, forward-thinking man I married, you would one day fret over a piece of paper.”

“It’s not a piece of paper,” I argued. “It’s a commitment.”

She laughed. “No one could ever doubt Reed’s commitment to our daughter. It’s been Heather holding up the works. She said she never cared about getting married.”

“What do you think changed?” I asked. “Do you think she’s pregnant?”

“No, I asked her. She said Reed asked—again—and this time, it felt right, so she said yes.” She looked up at me, her eyes dancing. “I think she shocked him, but he didn’t waste any time. He started organizing it before she could change her mind.”

“Well, whatever changed her mind, I’m glad.”

She reached up, loosening my tie. “Everything go okay in the office today?”

“Yep. I brought home some boxes of stuff, signed some papers, spoke with HR, all the usual.”

“Are you anxious?”

“About retiring?”

She nodded, looking concerned.

I winked at her. “I think you are. Worried that I’ll be underfoot all the time, Katy? Follow you around, showing you better ways of doing things? Insisting on coming everywhere with you? I’m looking forward to being with you twenty-four seven,” I added with a smirk.

I laughed at her horrified expression.

“I’m not anxious at all. I’ll still consult if needed. I plan on golfing. Sailing. Spending lots of time with my wife. Extended trips to Ontario to see my girls. Visiting with Gavin and Amanda. Finally having enough time to go to England to see Penny and Philip and tour around. Meet my new grandchild.” I tugged off my tie and loosened the collar of my shirt, rubbing the back of my neck. “I guess I understand Heather. I wasn’t ready until now. I’ve always loved my job, but I want to concentrate on us. Our family. Watch our grandkids grow. Spoil you.”

1

Richard

It was late when I finally pulled into the driveway, sighing with relief at being home. I used to love traveling for work, but now, I found I dreaded going. I hated leaving Katy and my girls.

My flight had been delayed leaving Toronto, then again departing Calgary, and it had been a long day. I reminded myself to speak to our travel specialist who handled our bookings. I wanted direct flights—no more stops.

I noticed although the house was dark, two lights shone in the night. The one over the front door for me and the muted glow coming from the nursery window. That meant Katy was awake with Heather, no doubt feeding her.

I pushed open my car door and stretched. The streetlamp glinted off something white, catching my eye, and I glanced toward it with a frown. I jogged down the driveway, confused at the half-dozen campaign signs on my lawn. All the political parties were represented. With a curse, I yanked them all out of the grass and carried them to the garage, tossing them into the corner. I grabbed my small suitcase and hurried into the house.

I took the steps two at a time, stopping to drop my bag into our room, then headed next door to the nursery. Exhaustion, stress, and the tension of the day drained away at the sight before me.

Dozing in the huge cuddle chair was my beautiful wife, Katy. Cradled in her arms was our baby, Heather. Tucked beside them was my Gracie. She lay across her mother’s lap like a starfish, taking up as much room, and no doubt her mother’s attention, as possible. A discarded bottle lay on the floor. They were a beautiful trio, and my little girls were both growing up far too fast for my liking.

I bit back my amusement watching them. I pulled my phone from my pocket, snapped a couple of pictures before I crossed the room to try to help settle my girls in their proper places.

I eased Heather from Katy’s arms, whispering assurances to Katy as she stirred. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ve got her.”

“You’re home,” she mumbled. “You’re late… We waited.”

“I know, baby. I’m sorry.”

She tried to pat my face and missed. “S’okay.”

Chuckling, I held her hand, kissing the palm. “I’m here now.”

“Missed you.”

Her words warmed my heart. I pressed a kiss to her head. “I missed you.”

“Hmmm.” Was all I got.

“Is she all fed?”

“Yes, all fed. Again.”

I grinned. Heather had a voracious appetite. Constantly hungry and impatient when she was made to wait for her meal.

“Okay, stay there. I’ll be back.”

She smiled, sleepy and content, letting her eyes drift shut.

Heather snuggled close to me, and I stood by her crib, not wanting to tuck her in quite yet. She was a warm, sweet-smelling weight in my arms. I rocked side to side in the motion that always soothed her, loving how she felt nestled to my chest. Finally, I laid her down, stroking the wild hair away from her forehead. She had inherited my cowlick. If she was anything like me, it was going to drive her crazy.

Once I made sure she was settled, I went back to the chair, studying Gracie. She was a light sleeper, and I knew there was a good chance once I tried to move her, she would be awake, and nothing short of one of our Daddy and Gracie raids on the ice cream tub would lull her back to sleep. We would sit at the table, her on my lap, the ice cream tub in front of us, and I would feed her tiny mouthfuls and listen to her babble on about some great event in her day, trying not to grin like an idiot the way her lisp made some words sound.

“It wath tho funny, Daddy! I laugh and laugh!”

Luckily, she must have been exhausted, because she stayed asleep through the lifting, carrying, and re-tucking into her little princess bed. Bending low, I kissed her curls, my love for her bursting in my chest.

Then I returned to the nursery. With no children on top of her, Katy had curled into a ball and was sound asleep. I tried not to laugh. She probably wouldn’t remember me coming home or talking to me, albeit briefly, when she woke up in the morning. I bent, sliding my arms under her and carrying her to our bed. Her side of the bed was straight and tidy. She had obviously been sleeping on my side, the pillow wrinkled and bunched, the blankets thrown back. She always slept there when I was gone. She said it was the only way she could sleep when I was away. My side of the bed, dressed in one of my shirts, and clutching my pillow.

I pulled back the blankets on her side and slid her in. I left her sleeping, grabbed a long, hot shower, and got ready for bed, slipping in beside her. In a second, she was nestled against me, her head on my chest and her leg tossed over mine—my own personal starfish. There was no doubt Gracie had inherited that from her.
My tires squealed and left black marks on the pavement. Flinging open the door, I lunged out of the seat, not even bothering to shut the door behind me. I was lucky I remembered to take the keys.

A security guard stopped me before I made it to the sliding doors of the hospital, holding up his hand.

“Sir, you can’t leave your car there. The parking lot is across the street—”

I interrupted him, shaking my head. I tossed my keys in his direction. “Look, kid, I trust you. Park my car and bring me the keys.”

“I can’t do that!”

Reaching into my pocket, I grabbed a wad of cash. I had no idea how much it was, but to this kid standing in front of me, blocking my way, masking his youth by pretending to be forceful, I was certain it was a fortune. I shoved the money into his hand, smirking as his eyes widened at the sight of the cash.

“Sure you can. Think of it as a reward for a job well done. Park my car and bring me my keys.” I pushed past him.

“Where are you going, sir?” he shouted.

I glanced over my shoulder as I hurried away. “The maternity ward!”

I tapped my foot as I waited for the elevator. My heart beat frantically, hands clenching and unclenching at my side, thinking about the call I received while having lunch with a client and Graham.

“Hello?”

“Richard, it’s Laura. I need you to come to the hospital.”

Ice flooded my veins. “What?”

“Katy’s gone into labor.”

I was on my feet, rushing out of the restaurant without another thought. I heard my name being called, but I ignored it. I jumped in my car, speeding toward the hospital. Katy wasn’t due for another three weeks. The baby was early. I had to get to her immediately.

The doors opened, and I cursed under my breath as I waited for people to exit. Didn’t they know I was in a hurry? I pressed six on the panel, then hit the ‘door close’ button, even though people were still filing in. My head fell back on my shoulders, as I inhaled a deep breath and counted to ten. I endured the slow ascent upward, trying not to snarl at people as they got off on other floors. I pushed the ‘door close’ button constantly, ignoring the frowns sent my way.

When the door opened on six, I burst out of the elevator, running to the desk. A nurse entering some information into the computer ignored me.

“My wife—”

She held up her hand, stopping me, and continued to type, not at all concerned with my panic. I wanted to scream, but I fisted my hands and held my tongue. Katy constantly told me I needed to learn patience. A few seconds later, she looked up with a bright smile.

“How can I help you?”

“My wife—I got a call—she’s having the baby today!”

“And the name?”

I stared at her, my brow furrowed. “We don’t know the name. The baby hasn’t been born yet.”

She scowled and opened her mouth, but I kept talking.

“How would I know the name? We didn’t want to know the sex. We wanted it to be a surprise. But she’s gone into labor early. I got a call. I need to find her.”

“Your wife’s name, sir.”

I sucked in a deep breath. Well, that made more sense.

“Katharine—but I call her Katy. She likes that better.”

She arched an eyebrow.

I said nothing in return, just glared. What the hell else did she want?

A hand fell on my shoulder, and I startled, looking down to see the amused face of Dr. Suzanne Simon. She patted my shoulder. “Calm, Richard. Katy is fine.” She smiled at the nurse. “VanRyan, Shelly. It’s Katy VanRyan.”

The nurse named Shelly grinned and threw me a look that made me think she was laughing at me. “I wondered. She warned me.”

I looked between the two of them. Warned? Who warned her? About what exactly?

Dr. Suzanne squeezed my arm. “Come with me, Richard. I’ll take you to Katy, and then I’ll explain everything.”

I nodded, following her down the hall, my stomach tense and my nerves tight.

“What did she mean, ‘she warned me’?”

Suzanne glanced up with a knowing look on her face. “Katy said she had a feeling you’d be a bit less in control than usual today. ‘Freaked out,’ I think were her words.”

I opened my mouth to protest, then shut it with a snap. As usual, my wife was right. I was rather freaked out right now. I needed to see Katy so I could calm down.

Suzanne stopped in front of a door, regarding me patiently. “Katy is fine. The baby is fine. You need to be composed and strong for her, all right?”

I BENT OVER THE TABLE, the din of the busy restaurant fading into the background as I struggled to contain my anger. Repressing the urge to yell, I kept my voice low, fury dripping from the words. “What did you say? I’m sure I didn’t hear you correctly.”

David relaxed back in his chair, not at all concerned by my ire. “I said, Tyler is being promoted to partner.”

My hand tightened around my glass so hard, I was surprised it didn’t shatter. “That was supposed to be my promotion.”

He shrugged. “Things changed.”

“I worked my ass off. I brought in over nine million. You told me if I surpassed last year, I’d be made partner.”

He waved his hand. “And Tyler brought in twelve million.”

I slammed my hand on the table, not giving a shit if it drew attention to us. “That’s because the bastard went behind my back and stole the client. The campaign idea was mine. He fucking ripped me off!”

“Your word against his, Richard.”

“Bullshit. This is all bullshit.”

“The decision is made, and the offer has been extended. Put in the effort, and maybe next year will be your year.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it. You’ll get a generous bonus.”

A bonus.

I didn’t want another fucking bonus. I wanted that promotion. It should have been mine.

I stood up so fast my chair toppled back, hitting the floor with a loud thud. I drew myself up to my full 6’4” height and scowled down at him. Given the fact that David didn’t break the 5’8” mark, sitting, he looked rather small.

David raised his eyebrow. “Careful, Richard. Remember, at Anderson Inc., we’re all about teamwork. You’re still part of the team—an important one.”

I regarded him steadily, tamping down the desire to tell him to go fuck himself. “The team. Right.”

Shaking my head, I walked away.

I strode into my office, slamming the door behind me. My assistant looked up, startled, a half-eaten sandwich in her hand.

“What did I fucking tell you about eating at your desk?” I snapped.

She scrambled to her feet. “Y–you were out,” she stuttered. “I was working on your expenses. I thought . . .”

“Well, whatever you thought was fucking wrong.” Reaching across her desk, I plucked the offending sandwich from her hand, grimacing at the concoction. “Peanut butter and jam? Is that the best you can do on what they pay you?” I cursed as the jam dripped on the edge of my jacket. “Goddamnit!”

Her already pale face blanched further as she looked at the red smear on my gray suit. “Mr. VanRyan, I’m so sorry. I’ll take it to the cleaners right away.”

“Damn right you will. Get me a sandwich while you’re out.”

She blinked. “I–I thought you went to lunch?”

“Once again, your thought process is incorrect. Get me a sandwich, and a latte—extra foam—no fat. I want Brian Maxwell on the phone—now.” Impatiently, I yanked off my jacket, making sure the pockets were empty. “Take this to the cleaners—I want it back this afternoon.”

She sat stock-still, gawking at me.

“Are you deaf?”

“Which would you like done first?”

I flung down my jacket. “That’s your fucking job. Figure it out and get it done!”

I slammed my office door.

Fifteen minutes later, I had my sandwich and latte. My intercom buzzed. “I have Mr. Maxwell on line two for you.”

“Fine.” I picked up the phone. “Brian. I need to meet with you. Today.”

“I’m fine. Thanks for asking, Richard.”

“Not in the mood. When are you available?”

“I’m booked all afternoon.”

“Cancel.”

“I’m not even in the city. The earliest I can be there is seven.”

“Fine. Meet me at Finlay’s. My usual table.” I hung up, punching the intercom. “Get in here.”

The door opened, and she tripped in—literally. I didn’t even bother to hide the fact I rolled my eyes in disgust. I had never met anyone as clumsy as her—she tripped over air. I swore she spent more time on her knees than most of the women I dated. I waited until she struggled to her feet, picked up her notebook, and found her pen. Her face was flushed, and her hand shook.

“Yes, Mr. VanRyan?”

“My table at Finlay’s. Seven o’clock. Book it. My jacket better be back on time.”

“I asked for rush service. It, ah, there was an extra charge.”

I raised my eyebrows. “I’m sure you were happy to pay it, considering it was your fault.”

Her face darkened even more, but she didn’t argue with me. “I’ll pick it up in an hour.”

I waved my hand; I didn’t care when she retrieved it, as long as it was in my possession before I left.

“Mr. VanRyan?”

“What?”

“I have to leave today at four. I have an appointment. I sent you an email about it last week?”

I tapped my fingers on my desk as I observed her. My assistant—Katharine Elliott—the bane of my existence. I’d done everything I could to get rid of her, but I’d never had any luck. No matter what task I gave her, she completed it. Every demeaning chore she handled without complaint. Pick up my dry cleaning? Done. Make sure my private washroom was stocked with my favorite brands of toiletries and condoms? Without fail. Alphabetize and clean my massive CD collection after I decided to bring them into the office? Completed—she even boxed up every CD when I “changed my mind” and had them delivered back home, spotless and in order. Not a word passed her lips. Send flowers and a brush off message to whomever I had dumped that month or week? Yep.
