When Rev walked away from his past, he didn’t want to see those he’d left behind. There are secrets that will haunt him forever, and history is about to become Rev’s present.
When Rev walks back into a town he put in his rear view mirror years ago, he also comes face to face with the pretty face he has never forgotten. But he’s changed, and so has she… Only time will tell if their forbidden flame burns as hot as it did all those years ago.
But there’s a threat that could tear everything apart… A dark menace which will haunt him if he doesn’t put it to rest.
There’s a choice to be made. A decision that will change Rev’s life forever.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

We’re stronger in the places that we’ve been broken.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY

PROLOGUE

REV

Present Day

“I want ye on the job, Rev. This one ain’t goin’ta be pretty,” Monster tells me.

He’s the President of the MC, and whatever he says is law, but he’s not a tyrant. If we need anything, he’ll bend over backwards to help us. We’re not just soldiers in his MC, we’re brothers. When he gave me a chance to patch in at twenty-five, I didn’t think I’d still be here ten years later. I didn’t expect to be part of a family that loves me as much as I do it.

“I’ll take my brother and Racer with me,” I inform Monster, and he nods his approval.

I make my way out of the clubhouse to find Hades and Racer waiting for me, and I quickly fill them in on the job we’ve been tasked with. Racer hasn’t been with the club long, but he’s already an integral part of the family.

My twin brother has been by my side all my life. Even when I went into the seminary for a while, he came to church every fecking day to confess and to talk to me about the shite he’d been up to. I tried to stop him from doing stupid, reckless things, but there was nothing I could do to prevent the stubborn arsehole from getting into trouble.

Hades has spent more than his fair share of nights in a police cell, but since we joined the Royal Bastards, we’ve both been doing much better.

Two hours later, I’m packed and ready to leave. I meet Racer and Hades by our bikes.

“Are you two ready?” I ask.

“Yes,” Hades answers while Racer nods. “It’s going to be interesting going back.”

“Aye, it definitely is,” I say as I head for my bike.

When we moved to Belfast, I vowed never to return to England, not even for work. I didn’t want to set foot on the land that spat me out and left me a broken man. I didn’t think I deserved happiness after walking out on Shaun and leaving Harley at the stone bench where we had our most profound conversations.

Now we’re heading back to Newcastle to sort out some shite that’s going down there, and I know I have to keep a level head. Some of our gun shipments have been going missing before they reach the club, and we’re losing a lot of money. Monster has asked us to meet with our suppliers to figure out where the problem is originating from. Once we’ve done that, we can fix whatever is broken.

“We’re not going to visit our old stomping grounds,” I warn Hades, who’s watching me.

“Don’t you miss it?” Racer asks.

“Like feck,” I respond, but my words are drowned out by the roar of our engines coming to life.

We pull out of the driveway and onto the street, heading for the airport. I can’t deny, my anxiety is at an all-time high at the thought of flying back to England. The risk that we would run into our father has always been one reason why we’ve never gone back.

You can’t choose your parents, but you can walk away from their toxicity if it hinders you. We chose to walk away from our father rather than have his death on our hands. Despite what he did to us, we didn’t want to kill him, but if we do meet him again, we know there’s every possibility that we will.

We grew up on a council estate in a town called Bolton—not far from the city of Manchester. The memories of our childhood and the reasons for Hades and me running away from home have consumed my thoughts over the years. The blood that stained our hands and the lives that were lost from overdosing on the drugs we sold still play on my mind on a never-ending loop.

I haven’t forgotten what happened in that shite hole we grew up in—the things we witnessed, and the way our father treated us. The man was a bastard, and he made sure we both believed we were as well. I don’t think he ever had any love for his family. He even blamed our mother for leaving him when she died, and he held us responsible for her death.

After we ran away, we ended up in Newcastle where we discovered what it was like to live the high life. We were both offered jobs in a nightclub on the south side of the river. It’s there that we met locals and tourists who were looking for a good time, and it’s there that we first came into contact with the man who would eventually take us under his wing.

Shaun Hunt was a man we could finally look up to, so we ended up working for him. He invited us into his home in South Shields, not far from Newcastle, where he gave us everything we needed. Everybody who knew Shaun loved him, but nobody saw beneath the shiny exterior. The business he ran wasn’t all above board.
USA Today Bestselling Author, Dani René, brings you a friends to lovers romance, with suspense, twists, and steam!

I saved her, but I didn’t want to be a hero.

Callia was too young for me, she was off limits. I didn’t want to darken her light with my past, with my secrets.

And when my world comes crashing down, there’s only one person who is by my side, keeping me from breaking down.

Now, I have to make a choice—Do I let her in, or do I spend my life alone?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

REBEL

The Past

Twenty Years Old

Ma is sittin’ in the garden, the sun shinin’ down on her, when I walk out of the house ta join her. My da’s away on business at the moment, and I know Ma misses him while he’s away.

The cup of tea in my hand is made fer her. I wanted ta do somethin’ special and tell her I love her before I go off to meet Orla. I didn’t think I’d end up datin’ an Irish girl, only ta bring her over to Italy ta meet Ma. And now I’m plannin’ on talkin’ ta Ma about movin’ Orla over here permanently.

I love Orla. It’s somethin’ I’ve spoken ta Ma about, and she’s asked me so many questions. Ma seems ta think I’m too young ta fall in love. But I know how I feel about my girl, and I can see myself bein’ with her fer the rest of our lives. It’s fun when we’re together, but I have ta travel a lot fer work, so we don’t get as much time as I’d like. I was goin’ ta suggest we settle down together in Belfast, but her family aren’t too happy about her bein’ with me, so I’ve decided ta bring her out here ta get her away from them.

They’re judgemental arseholes.

“Thank you, my sweet boy,” Ma says in her strong Italian accent.

I love listenin’ ta Ma speakin’ with her friends. There’s somethin’ exotic about it. I’ve spent far too long in Ireland ta consider myself Italian, and with Da’s Belfast accent being so strong, I’ve picked it up and it’s stuck with me.

“I’m thinkin’ of askin’ Orla ta move out here,” I tell Ma who glances up at me, surprise clear on her expression. “What’s that look fer?”

“I didn’t think you wanted that kind of commitment. I mean, the only reason you should be thinking about moving in together is if you’re going to ask her to marry you.”

Ma comes from a very traditional background. No sex before marriage. And when you do get married, it has to be in the Catholic church. When she married Da, her family denounced her, told her ta leave and never return. At first she begged for them ta reconsider. But the ultimatum was clear—them or my father.

She chose love over blood.

When Da started workin’ fer the mafia, my parents hoped Ma’s relatives would change their minds about him. With the rest of the men from Ma’s side of the family workin’ fer the mafia, Da hoped he would finally be accepted by them. But it didn’t help.

Da fell into the work easily, and havin’ decided he never wanted ta leave, he took the vow; he made the promise. But Ma’s family still didn’t accept him, and my parents continued to live separately from them.

I know who my relatives are. I’ve seen them around the village where we live, but they won’t acknowledge me. Even if I were to greet one of them, I’d be ignored.

I’ve come ta accept it.

I realise Ma is still waitin’ on an answer from me.

“I don’t know about marriage just yet, but I can see us gettin’ wed in the future,” I tell her. “I’d like her ta live here with me, so we can have more time together. It also means I won’t have ta travel to Ireland as much.”

Ma smiles. It’s as if she knows somethin’ I don’t…maybe she does. With age comes knowledge.

“You know I’ll always be there for you. And I support your decisions, but don’t commit to something you’re not ready for. Okay?” She offers me a gentle smile and I nod.

“Aye, I promise I’ll only ask her ta move here if it feels right. It’s not been an overnight decision, but I’ll think about what you’ve said on the drive to the hotel.” I know Ma’s right. I don’t want ta do somethin’ I’ll regret later in life. “Thanks, Ma.”

“Okay, my sweet boy.”

I lean in ta kiss her cheek before leavin’ ta make my way ta the hotel where Orla is stayin’. When Orla mentioned she wanted ta come out and see me, she said she’d feel less pressure if she were ta have her own space while stayin’ here. I’m not sure what she meant by that, but I want her ta be happy, so I didn’t argue.

By the time I arrive at the hotel, I’m nervous ta see her again. I tap out a message on my phone ta let her know I’m in the reception area, and settle down on one of the fancy leather sofas.

When she appears in the lobby, I smile, takin’ in the pretty woman who’s lookin’ like she’s anxious, her gaze shiftin’ nervously between me and the guests movin’ around us.

The expression on her face isn’t as happy as I thought it would be, and when she reaches me, she doesn’t lean up on her tiptoes ta kiss me like she usually does. Instead, she gives me a brief hug before quickly steppin’ back as if I were nothin’ more than an acquaintance.

USA Today Bestselling Author, Dani René, brings you another raw, gritty, dark romance in the Royal Bastards MC world. Head back to Belfast for this forbidden, age gap MC romance that will have you reading late into the night!

I walked away from Clover once before. She was too young, and I was too much of a bastard to hurt her. But now she's all grown up, and she's mine.

As much as I want to protect her, to keep her safe, I'm not a good man. I've done things I'm not proud of, sold my soul to a devil who's comin' to collect.

I shouldn't bring her into my world, but when she's dragged into it kickin' and screamin', I have no choice but to be her hero. And once I save her, I need to let her go.

But Clover is stubborn.
And when a secret she's been hidin' is revealed, I'm torn between her and the club.
I would do anythin' for those I love, even if it costs me my own life.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

SULLY

I grin down at the motherfecker who’s bearin’ down on the metal between his yellowed teeth. Both his eyes are swelling with purple bruises that will soon turn blue. He’s tryin’ta speak, but there’s nothin’ he can say that will change the fact he’s been leakin’ information about our shipments to the mob.

It’s not the first time Monster has allowed one of us ta take the lead, and I’m thankful I’m able to take this one. The metal knuckle-dusters I wrap my fingers around glint in the sunlight streamin’ through the window.

“The last time ye decide to feck with the Royal Bastards will be today. We don’t take kindly ta rats, and when ye run off and tell yer friends about our shipments, we need ta send a message,” I tell him, keepin’ my voice controlled, yet drippin’ pure venom.

“Mmh uh mm,” he bites out through the metal, and I smile.

Rearing back, I bring my fist down on his jaw, listening to the crack that follows, and I can’t help but feel satisfied. I won’t kill him, not this time. We want him to go back ta them and show them just how fecking ruthless we are.

“I’m the feckin’ cleaner, and I’ll gladly clean yer blood off this floor,” I tell him. “I’ll make sure ye remember me—remember the Royal feckin’ Bastards.” Stepping back, I motion for the two prospects ta take the arsehole’s shirt off.

“Hey,” Rebel calls from behind me as he enters the warehouse.

This place is a shitehole, but Monster likes it because it’s outside the city, and nobody comes here.

I turn to Rebel and notice he has Hades with him as well. “What’s goin’ on?” I ask.

“Monster wants us in church in an hour,” Rebel tells me.

I glance at the man we caught, and I shake my head before I release the metal from my knuckles and lean in to look directly into his eyes. The terror that flits in them makes me happy. I love watchin’ someone cower in fear. And right now, I grip the arsehole’s throat and squeeze.

“Ye tell all yer wee friends they’ll pay a hefty price if they attempt to trade in our territory. Ye’ll also inform them every feckin’ piece of information you spewed to them is false. Make them believe it. Do you understand me?”

He nods quickly, his head movin’ so fast it’s a blur for a second or two. Tears fill his eyes as he watches me. My fingers tighten, a warnin’, and then I release him.

“Get this arsehole out of here,” I order before I head over ta Rebel and Hades. The two prospects shove the black bag over his head and drag him from the chair. Once they’re out of earshot, I ask my two brothers. “So, church?”

Hades is the one who answers, “Tye has some information on Bragan.”

“I can’t wait till we get that fecker and make him pay,” I tell them as we make our way out to the bikes. Turnin’ my key, I rev the engine, givin’ Rebel and Hades a hint that I want a race.

The moment I pull away, they’re close behind. It doesn’t take us long ta reach the clubhouse. The adrenaline from the session at the warehouse is still fresh in my mind, but as I walk in, I can’t stop the smile that curls my lips.

There, waitin’ on me, is my girl.

My Lucky Clover.

ONE

SULLY

THE PAST

Twenty-Five Years Old

Death—the visitor that most of us try to escape.

Nobody gets to do that, though, because it’s the one thing in life that’s a promise.

For some, the Reaper visits far too early. He comes knockin’ when they least expect it, and then they have no choice but to walk with him into the afterlife.

That’s when it hurts the most. The unexpected.

When it happens, it’s an agony that nobody can describe, but also one that no person can run from. I don’t believe in heaven or hell, even though I grew up havin’ta go ta church every feckin’ Sunday, but somethin’ about it never sat quite right with me. How can one entity judge millions? I’m not a believer, and even though I see miracles happen all around me every day, I also see the ugliness in the world.

As the plane comes in to land on the smooth tarmac, the wheels touch down with a thump and I take in the airport building. I’m finally in the US for the first time in a long while. I’ve flown across the pond before, but never on club business.

Monster, the President of the Royal Bastards MC in Belfast and one of my oldest friends, agreed I could fly over and represent the club. Which brings me here, to Washington State where The Kovenant MC is based. This part of the country is far more breathtakin’ than anywhere else in the States. At least, that’s what I think. White Pass is one place I’ve visited that felt like home. It’s been a long time since I’ve been here, but now I’m back, I can’t deny I’ve missed it.
Bestselling Author, Dani René, brings you the next installment in the RBMC world which is a prequel to Sully’s story. A romantic suspense rollercoaster while introduces us to a beauty keeping a dark secret from Sully.

I ran from a life I knew, and found solace in the dark eyes of a stranger.
Memories burn me daily, but he seems to chase the pain away,
I can’t fall in love.
I can’t need him.
And when he offers me a new life,
I find that I can’t say no.
I’ve never forgotten him.
Years have passed, and he’s still my obsession.
I have always been lucky, and this time, my luck has run out.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Time stills.

Moments pass.

But there’s no peace.

The tension that coils in my stomach is a serpent, readying its attack on my body. I watch his chest rise and fall from the corner where I’ve been huddled up. I don’t move. I can’t. The agony has riddled me motionless. It’s easier to hide.

His expression is peaceful. A calm, serene air surrounds him.

His body nothing more than the glassy top of a still lake, not a ripple in sight.

But it’s a lie.

There’s no peace when the slightest movement can bring war. He breathes, in and out, until those black lashes flutter open and his dark eyes pin me to the spot. It’s as if he’s someone else. And I believe he’s been overtaken by an alien force rather than admit he’s the man I love.

His legs swing over the edge of the sofa. Rogan doesn’t speak, because silence is more terrifying than the vile words he utters. He doesn’t see me. I’m nothing, but something all at the same time. I’m his solace, I’m his frustration, and as I watch him move about the room, I know I’ll soon be his punching bag.

Guilt weighs on me.

Sadness grips my heart.

And with each day that passes, I know no matter how many times the words ‘I’m sorry’ pass those lips, it will never be enough. Because in the same breath, he hisses, “You’re a stupid whore.”

ONE

CLOVER

It wasn’t the moment of impact that reminded me where I was.

Or why I’d chosen to go back to him, time and again.

It was the moment I lost all feeling in my face—my arms.

Each minute after felt like an eternity. I didn’t move. And he didn’t stop.

I didn’t breathe, yet he continued.

Angry. Feral. Animalistic.

The promises would come without a doubt, without fail. They were constant reminders of what happened the night before, but I overlooked them because the apologies were heartfelt. Surely, they were.

Isn’t this what love is about?

Standing by your man. Being there when he needs you the most. Unless those words my worthless mother uttered were wrong. You’d think I’d grown out of wanting someone to love me. Even after she was taken by cancer, stolen from me and my dad, I could tell my life wouldn’t be the same. Dad was there for me—he watched over me for years, ensuring I had all the love he had for me, but he was different. Detached. And then, he was taken from me. I still found myself searching for that one person who’d offer me what I so stupidly craved.

That’s how I landed in a dump of an apartment on the outskirts of New York where he was my only salvation.

But one day, something clicked in my mind. It’s as if someone had come in and flicked a switch. Perhaps it was the time he slammed my head against the wall. It was the last time he ever touched me. Because the next morning when he left for work, I ran.

The money that had been sitting in my bank account, without his knowledge, bought me the plane ticket. I had nothing else but the clothes on my back. There was no doubt where I’d go. I knew I couldn’t stay in the US, because he would track me down. So, I came to a country where I thought I could fly under the radar. I chose Ireland.

My father’s brother lives here in Ireland, and that’s how I find myself in a city called Belfast. It’s been a couple of months, yet I feel more at home here since I left my childhood home. When I did find my uncle, it was his assistant who helped me get into this place for rehabilitation. My uncle wasn’t even in the country, but she knew of me. He’d told her about me. And when I explained my plight, she made some calls.

Out of the shower, I stand in front of the mirror before I get dressed. I do this every morning and every evening. I have to bear witness to what I’ve been through. I haven’t touched any drugs in six months, and being clean isn’t easy, but I’m doing it. Granted, I’m forced to be good while in rehab. I’m able to focus on taking each day as it comes, rather than on the fear of being beaten every evening, or morning, or whenever he gets home.

There are other tokens of what I’ve been through. My body bears the scars of years of abuse. Some remain, but most of them are hidden. Deep within my tattered soul. It reminds me that hope is something fleeting, an emotion not worthy of my time.

And trust, that’s something I let go of a long time ago.

Love discarded me.

Love violated me.

And hope. That motherfucking bitch left me to rot.

I’m lucky, though, like my mother used to say. I will make it. I didn’t believe her back then, but now that I’m here, I think I truly am. Not many women get out of a situation like mine.

I’m the eyes and ears of the club. If it’s online I’ll find it.
You may think you’re hiding something, but I’ll find it. I dig deep into the dark web when I come across her. She’s no stranger. Once upon a time, I loved her. But she walked away and I believed it was my fault.
Now I know it was all a lie she spun to keep me out of the sights of monsters.
She’s in danger, and come Christmas Day, she’s going to meet her maker.
I don’t believe in holiday miracles, but I plan to save her and take back what she stole from me. And this time, she’s not walking away.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

TYE

Seventeen Years Old

The sun sets on another short, autumn day in Ballycastle. The sky has darkened already when I make my way down to the beach. Livin’ this far north of Belfast has its perks. I’ve grown up in the small town, and I know everyone. But that’s where its drawbacks seem to come alive as well.

My da is a shopkeeper in the high street, and if I fuck up, he hears about it from the gossipin’ ol’ biddies who spy from their lounge windows. When we pass by, we can see the curtains shift ever so slightly. I’m a bit of a troublemaker when it comes down to it. But Da can be thankful I don’t do drugs and shite like that.

“Tye,” the soft voice of my best friend calls my name as she nears me.

Einin has been in my life for so long, since I was a wee one, and I’ve never known a world without her. Those eyes, golden and shimmerin’, always looked at me as if I were her hero. And while I wanted to be, I don’t believe I’m good enough for her.

We’re all meant to be deciding what we want to do with our lives, but we’re not even out of our feckin’ teens yet. She smiles, and it’s as if the world spins on its axis. When I turned sixteen, I started noticin’ her more. I knew I shouldn’t because we were mates. But I couldn’t help it. As she blossomed, somethin’ inside me clicked.

“Are ye ready for this?” I ask her as I take her hand. It’s not the first time we’ve come out here, but it’s the last time we will for a wee while.

“Aye.” She nods while liftin’ her chin in defiance.

One thing about my wee bird is that she’s strong. Her personality shines through in her soulful expression. It makes me smile whenever I look at her. When there’s somethin’ dangerous to do, she’s always the first to step up and take the risk.

I lead her out onto the basalt. Legend has it that Finn McCool, a giant who lived here eons ago, created them. I’d rather believe that, than accept they were merely the result of volcanic eruptions. Einin giggles when we reach the water as we watch the small waves hit the black rock.

Reachin’ into my pocket, I pull out my pocketknife and flick the blade.

“Do ye think Finn would be angry at us doing this?” Einin asks me, innocent intrigue clear in her voice.

“Naw.” I shake my head and grin down at her. “He’ll think we’re all right,” I tell her. “You’ll be safe with me.” My words make her smile—a wide, cheerful grin that lightens her expression and makes her eyes sparkle like gold in the sunlight.

This far north, the weather can be unpredictable, but today, it’s been grand. I drop to a crouch. Einin follows suit and settles beside me. The gentle breeze along the ocean wafts her perfume into my nostrils. Takin’ a deep inhale, I smile as I start carvin’ into the rock. Perhaps we shouldn’t deface the stone, but many have done it, and deep down, I want proof that Einin existed in my life.

“I can’t believe I have to go,” she tells me then. It has been a sore subject since I first found out her ma was sendin’ her away. “And just before the fair.”

I glance over my shoulder at her. Those pink lips purse into a pout, and I’m tempted to lean in and kiss her. I’ve wanted to for a couple of years now, but I’ve always bottled it. The fear of her rejectin’ me in that way has kept me at a distance. My feelings, at least.

“I want you to stay,” I tell her before turnin’ to finish up etchin’ my name and then hers in the rock. The black basalt will forever hold our names. At least until the water eats away at it. But I’m pretty sure it will be a few hundred years before that happens. We’ll both be long gone.

“Aye, but ye know Ma is not going ta listen ta me. Even though I can finish my final year at school in Antrim. Da has poisoned her mind against the school here, and now she’s on about it being shite.” She shakes her head, her gaze lookin’ out over the water, and she focuses on the horizon, but I can’t take my eyes off her.
USA Today Bestselling Author, Dani René, brings you the first book in her chapter of the Royal Bastards MC World.

They call me a monster for a reason.
I left my morals behind long ago, and I forgot what empathy feels like. Emotions get you killed, and I’m tired of watchin’ people die. Not anymore, not under my rule.

When Father Donahue calls on the club for help, we step up. What I wasn’t countin’ on was her.

She is forbidden. Too young and too pure for me to consider touchin’. The warmth of her is far too temptin’ and I find myself breakin’ all my rules.

Only, the girl is hidin’ somethin’ and when I find out what it is, I will make her pay.
But not before I get a taste of her cherry blossom lips.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PLAYLIST

Drive You Insane - Daniel Di Angelo
How to Save a Life - The Fray

PROLOGUE

MONSTER

I was brought up a religious Catholic boy. My ma made sure I went to church every Sunday and said my prayers every night. Even though I was convinced talking to a man I couldn’t see was stupid, she would slap me about the head and tell me to do it anyway. Her influence on my life is the reason I’m here today, alive and not lying beside my da six feet under. She needed me just as much as I needed her. At twenty-eight, I still live with her, wanting to show her that no matter what, I’ll be by her side.

I obeyed the rules she set out for me when I was growin’ up. Made sure I didn’t get myself into trouble, at least for a while. It wasn’t until I hit sixteen and got into life with the motorcycle club that it all went south. Which brings me to today. The whispers I’ll be takin’ over from Da have been nonstop over the past couple weeks, and I’m pretty sure Ma has been dreading this day since she had me.

The thing is, I tried. I truly did. I wanted to be the son my ma could be proud of, and even though I’ve done some stupid shite, I still know right from wrong. I watched Da fuck up too many times to count, and I vowed to never be like him.

You can’t stay innocent forever. Not when you live in Belfast. Northern Ireland has always been famous for the shite that goes down on the daily. It’s as if the world is watching, waiting for another storm to hit. Violence was a way of life, not something to be feared.

And when I was a youngen, I didn’t think about how much my life would change when I was old enough to be dragged into the darkness with my da. It wasn’t the usual worries that bothered me, it was the danger that arrived with coming of age. That’s what Da called it at the time. I knew I would need to step up and take over. There was no doubt in my mind I had a duty to the club. But I convinced myself it would be when I turned eighteen, and not before that.

My da was a leader.

He had men who followed him into the flames, and they all came out on the other side. Walking around like they owned the world, even though the country was burning around them. Unscathed by what life threw at them, ignorant to the people who needed their help. The problem was, they became overconfident.

When you don’t know loss, pain, or heartache, you think you are invincible.

They did.

My da convinced his men they would live forever. But that didn’t happen, and he left me and Ma on our own. The memory of the war he started is still fresh in my mind. Only two years have passed since he died, and I notice how Ma still seems as if she’s walkin’ around in a trance.

I lift my stare to her, hoping she’ll look at me, but she doesn’t. As I sip my coffee, I wonder when she’ll stop missin’ him, if ever. She may be gettin’ older, but she’s still the strong woman I’ve always known her to be. It’s Sunday; she’s dressed in her favourite outfit as she gets ready to go to church. I may not be joinin’ her, but she’ll pray for me. It’s what she tells me every week.

“I’ll pray for you,” her words come as she grabs her purse and glances my way. She still loves me, has hope for me, even though I may not believe in what she does. I don’t go to church or pray. I gave up on that a long time ago. But the way my ma looks at me is nothin’ short of a miracle—her expression filled with love, with affection she shouldn’t feel. But she does. One thing about her is she’s stubborn. Must be where I get it from.

“Aye.” I chuckle. “No need. You know I’m goin’ straight to hell,” I tell her. It’s somethin’ I believe with every fibre of my being. When I was thirteen, I remember standin’ and singing some feckin’ hymn that meant nothin’ to me. It was part of the service, but when I looked up, my gaze caught the priest’s, and he smirked. It was as if he knew I was tainted, and he made the sign of the cross.

Ma used to call me her wee monster. I was a nightmare growing up, and even now, as an adult, the name stuck. Which is why it’s my road name. I’ve come into my own, and I’m proud of it.
