There are some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed.
My girlfriend kicked me out. Then, even my dog didn’t want me, so he ran away. My boss fired me when I called to let him know I was going to be late. And to put the cherry on top of the crap sundae, I accidentally doused a woman in water who had more followers than brain cells.
As if becoming one of the most hated men in Queen City wasn’t bad enough, some lunatic was stalking the popular life coach I had soaked. The fucker should be running from Zoey, not watching, especially with me protecting her. Some fuckers must learn the hard way, and I’m going to be the one to teach him. You don’t mess with anyone who belongs to a Predator.
It was a perfect day … until I met Stump.
I found a new friend, reached half a million followers, and was on the brink of putting my past behind me when the crazy biker accused me of stealing his dog. To make matters worse, he then blamed me for people hating on him. He did that with no help from me. I don’t blame the dog for running away. I would, too, if I belonged to him.
My skills as a life coach don’t work on him. I might not be able to change the irritating Predator, but I’m not above using him to catch the one who wants me dead.
The school bus riders had already left, and she was the only one waiting to be picked up.

Pulling her backpack farther up her shoulder, Zoey started tapping her foot in frustration. Her father was always late, despite knowing the time she got out of school.

“Let’s go in the office, and I’ll call.”

Embarrassed that the teacher was irritated at not being able to leave herself, she followed her fifth-grade teacher back inside. Her father’s increasing habit of picking her up late was wearing on the school’s staff. Zoey might only be eleven years old, but she was smart enough to see the irritation between the teacher and the principal when they came through the office door.

Zoey took a seat where she could see out the window to the parking lot, hoping her father would pull up and get out with the same happy-go-lucky expression he always wore on his handsome face. The women behind the desk couldn’t hide their aggravation with her, but the second her father walked through the door, it would disappear.

Her father was not only handsome but could draw their anger out of them without a word spoken. It made no difference if the teacher was male or female; he could charm both sexes with very little effort.

Swinging her legs, she glanced down at her lap and stopped tugging her short dress lower. She hated the dress. It was too small and the pattern made her body look like a pineapple was shoved inside of it.

Not only was her father late, but he had taken back the clothes they had bought her for the start of the school year. She had managed to wear them for a couple of weeks before she returned from school one afternoon to see them all gone. Just like the furniture he had leased to fill the lavish home he had rented to lure clients into whatever deal he was trying to sell them.

“There he is.”

Zoey raised her lashes to see her principal smoothing her hair and her teacher straightening her dress. Rolling her eyes, she picked up the backpack she dropped to the floor when she came inside the office.

“Sorry, kiddo. I was held up in a meeting.” He shot her the quick apology before turning his charismatic appeal on the women, who were both becoming flustered as he drew closer to the desk.

“Ladies, how can I make it up to you? The traffic took me longer than I expected.”

“That’s okay. I know how busy you are.”

“I need to find a wife to help me out. Either of you beautiful ladies available?”

Her stomach clenched in a gut-twisting motion that had her regretting the afterschool snack she had eaten. The only thing worse than dealing with her father was having to put up with another stepmother.

She’d had four so far, and those were the ones she was old enough to remember. She had grown out of being excited about having a mother who would provide stability to the chaos her father created from his lies.

“Sue is married, but I’m as free as a bird.”

“Are the men in this town blind?”

Their blushes grew darker as they became even more flustered.

The nausea that was churning in her stomach began to burn as it tried to escape at her father’s cunning smile that she had no problem recognizing, while the women didn’t.

Ms. Reed raised her a ringless hand, showing her naked ring finger as proof. “It seems so.”

The teacher nearly gushed when he took her hand in his.

“Then you have to let me show you that not all men are too stupid to recognize a beautiful woman when they see one.”

The principal, wanting her own share of attention, moved closer to his other side. “George and I are on a break. We’ve grown apart since he changed jobs and he’s on the road so much.”

“You need to tell George that all work and no play makes George a dull boy.”

Her principal’s laughter at her husband’s expense had Zoey clutching her belly in pain.

“Dad….”

Her father turned and easily recognized the signs of her distress. “Can you make it home, or do you need to go to the restroom?”

“I can make it home.” Putting a hand over her mouth, she rushed to the door, needing to get away from the women who were vying for his attention.

“Sorry, ladies. My little princess’s ulcer is acting up again. I need to get her home before you have to call the janitor.”

“Zoey has an ulcer? I didn’t see that on her file when you registered her.”

“It’s a new diagnosis; nothing to worry about. I give her medicine before I bring her to school and in the evenings. As soon as I get her home, she’ll be fine.” Giving them both a promising smile, he turned to follow Zoey out of the office.
Ice
As president of the Predators’ MC, my men and I are used to preying on the weak and those stupid enough to cross our paths. So why does a straitlaced teacher make me sit up and take notice when I see her for the first time? The brothers all think she makes me weak, and believe me, weak in their eyes isn’t where I want to be. She wants me to prove she means more to me than the club, and when I fail, she thinks she can just walk away. She’s wrong. I’m a Predator, and nothing escapes me.

Grace
As a teacher, I’m supposed to want to educate those who want to learn, right? That’s what I believed until I was told I’d have to teach a class at the prison. I didn’t move to a town labeled as one of the safest places in America only to be faced with a bunch of Predators. He expects me to trust him despite being the reason I’m trapped in the middle of a prison riot. His club means more to him than I ever will, and if I give him a chance, he will break the fragile peace I have managed to find. It’s not the first time I’ve had to escape a predator.

“There are a hundred in each crate, twelve crates in total.”

Creed nodded toward one of his men, who moved forward to open a crate.

There was a touch of unease he was feeling, bringing his instincts to alert. Ice sat, watching the deal go down between the two arms dealers while carefully surveying his surroundings. Something didn’t feel right. The building at the train depot was dark, which wasn’t what was grating on his nerves. Several of his men were spread out, hidden, making sure the transaction went down safely for both of the dealers.

He turned his head, seeing Jackal changing positions. His enforcer felt it, too. Ice’s hand went behind his back to where he kept his gun hidden by his leather vest, which bore the name of the motorcycle club he ruled with an iron fist.

The Predators owned Queen City. There wasn’t a deal that went down they didn’t okay and get their share of the profits from. Which was why he was sitting here instead of being back at his clubhouse in bed with a woman and a bottle of tequila.

A flicker of movement had him stiffening as he leaned against a large crate. Ice’s sharp gaze caught it again at the same time as one of Creed’s men looked nervously over his shoulder.

“Fuck!” Ice said under his breath. With a wave of his hand, Ice gave his order. The meet was over. “Creed, we’ve got company.”

The men scattered like rats when the police swarmed the large building. Ice didn’t try to run; he stepped forward when Creed ran by him, bringing his gun down on the shoulder of the cop chasing him, allowing Creed to escape into the darkness. The cop fell to his knees.

“Drop your weapon! Now!”

Ice dropped his gun. He hadn’t managed to live the life he had by being stupid, but he wasn’t going to go down like a pussy, either.

Utilizing a tactic he had used during his football days, he lowered his shoulders and barreled into the three cops heading toward him, taking all of them down to the dirty concrete floor, trying to buy time for more of his men to get away. The more it took to keep him restrained, the less there were to chase after the ones fleeing.

Taser prongs latched onto his shoulder, freezing every muscle in his body as the cops regained control of the situation. Ice was only able to lay helpless as he was roughly cuffed and dragged to his feet between two cops to a waiting squad car.

Jackal, Max, Buzzard, and Fade were cuffed and placed in cars behind the one he was taken to. His eyes met Jackal’s briefly before a SWAT vest cut off his view. Ice’s lips tightened when he saw the fucker slam Jackal’s head against the roof of the car before throwing him inside.

The front driver door opened and a plain-clothed detective slid into the front seat. “I didn’t think I would live to see the day I would have you in the backseat of my car.”

The gloating face staring back at him had Ice wishing his hands were free.

“You didn’t do it on your own, Slater. You can’t piss unless someone’s holding your dick for you.”

Slater Richman had been trying to find charges to press against him since he had joined the force seven years ago.

The gloating expression was replaced with anger. “Doesn’t change the fact that you’re there. You and the rest of the Predators are going to have some fun in prison. You’re going to miss all the women back at your clubhouse. I might need to stop by and see if they’re lonely after a couple of months.”

“You do that.” The women who belonged to the Predators would cut off his dick and shove it up his fat ass. “Tell them I sent you.”

Pure malice stared back at Ice. “I’m going to make sure you and your men don’t get out of these charges like you have the other times. The new DA isn’t on your payroll yet, so I’m going to enjoy sitting in that court room and watching you go down.”

Ice leaned back against the seat, refusing to talk to the blustering fuck-wad any further.

Unable to get a response, the cop put the car in drive and pulled out with the other squad cars following.

It had been a long time since he had been locked up. He had pulled an eighteen-month stint in his early twenties, which had been fifteen years ago. He had been lucky then, being incarcerated just outside Queen City. His brothers and bitches had visited regularly. This time, he knew he would receive a longer stretch and be sent to a different prison.

Ice watched the city pass outside the car window, knowing it would be a long time before he saw it again.
Casey had spent most of her life watching the Predators control Queen City, never believing they could be brought to justice. She was the one who always passed unnoticed as Max’s stepsister. They underestimated what she was capable of until it was almost too late. When the Predators discovered they were her prey, there was hell to pay, and Casey was going to have to pay her dues with her soul.
One mistake can fuck up your life forever.
Max trusted his stepsister, not believing for a second she would betray the Predators. She used her body to get what she wanted, and now Max would use the same wiles on her to trap Casey in her own web of deceit. The Predators demanded revenge, and Max was going to see they got what they wanted, even if the price was his soul.
This was one standoff neither was going to win.
Carefully folding the legal document, she placed it back in the envelope and onto the kitchen table where she stared at it, silently debating how to handle the dilemma.

The person responsible for turning her world upside down thought she was without options. He was mistaken. She had a way of dealing with him so she would never have to fear him again.

However, if she went through with her plan, it would place her life in danger. She could lose the ones closest to her. Casey bit her lip. Was she strong enough to face the fear she had avoided for years?

Searching through her purse, she found the card in her wallet that she had shoved there months before. Taking a shuddering breath, she dialed the number, and a male voice answered.

“This is Casey Harris. Do you remember me?”

“Hi, Casey. Of course I remember you. What can I do for you?”

“Is your offer still open?”

“Yes, have you reconsidered?”

Casey paused. Then, before she could change her mind, she blurted out her answer. “If I help you out, then I’m going to need something in return.”

“We don’t pay informants.” His amicable voice went cold.

“It’s not money I want,” Casey denied hastily.

“What do you want, then?”

“I’ll tell you when we meet.”

“What if I can’t do it?”

“Then neither one of us will be getting what we want.” Casey made her voice firm.

“Meet me in an hour at the coffee shop on Elk Street.”

“I’ll be there.” Casey disconnected the call, laying her cell phone back down on the table with trembling fingers.

She had actually done it. Even though she had been left with no choice, it still bothered her that she would be betraying those who trusted her.

Casey stared at the picture on her wall, dispelling her doubts. The choice had been taken out of her hands.

Standing, she picked up her purse and the letter. To get the help she desperately needed, she was going to have to do something that several law enforcement agencies, rival clubs, and victims had tried to do for years without success. The Predators were finally going to be brought to justice.

Her eyes were caught by the picture again. If she didn’t succeed, she wouldn’t be the only one paying the price with their life.

Chapter 1

Casey looked up from the counter she was straightening when the door opened. A large group of men in leather jackets with women entered the convenience store where she was working the night shift. A couple of the men gave her a once-over as they spread out through the store.

She brushed her suddenly damp hands against the sides of her blue jeans as she automatically moved to stand behind the register to ring up the items they wanted to purchase. Several of the men went to the hotdogs spinning on the carousel, while others were grabbing the pizza slices off the revolving rack.

Hiding her nervousness, she rang up the first two at the counter without looking at the man who had come to stand at the end of the line. When he stepped forward, she rang his vast array of food up along with the pint of beer.

“When did you start working here?” he asked sharply.

“Fourteen dollars and sixty-five cents,” Casey gave him his total before answering his question. “Last week.”

Her stepbrother Max’s question raised the hairs on her arms. From his tightening jaw, the usually laid-back biker was showing his displeasure.

“The old man know?” Max’s questions were beginning to unnerve her, as was the fact that he made no attempt to pay.

“No, I haven’t told him or Renee yet.” Casey had referred to her mother by name for as long as her memory stretched back. She placed her hand out, palm up. Max looked down at it with a frown before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his wallet that was attached to the metal chain hanging down the side of his jeans. Taking out a twenty, he placed it in the palm of her hand.

Casey hid the shiver that coursed through her body at the sensation of his fingers touching hers. Hurriedly, she placed the money in the register and counted out his change.

“You already have a full-time job at the bank, so why do you need another?”

Casey knew he wasn’t going to move aside until he had his answers. Max might come across as easygoing, but he could be stubborn when he wanted his way.

“I wanted to pay a few bills off and save for something to splurge on.” She motioned for the man standing next to Max to move forward so she could ring him up, but he raised a brow, staying put. Casey wanted to snap at him, but the man staring back at her was too frightening. Jackal was letting her know that, until Max was finished, no one else would be leaving, either.
The Enforcer’s Oath: Protect the club at all costs.
Jackal made an enemy out of Penni when he kidnapped her years ago. He let her go, never imagining she would take a piece of his soul with her. Now protecting Penni against a former brother will force him to place the club against her once again.
She may be the Hostage, but he’s the one held captive by the lust she refuses to admit binds them together.

“Yes, please.” Grace opened a drawer next to her, looking for a spoon. “Why do you only have plastic silverware?”

Penni opened the package of sugar into the coffee cup in front of her then handed it to her friend. “I keep meaning to buy some more silverware. For some reason, they keep disappearing.” She poured herself a cup of coffee, leaving it black, as she watched Grace take a sip, wincing at the strong flavor. “Sorry. I like my coffee strong.”

“Now I know why you’re always so hyper.”

“I’m hyper without it. The coffee just makes it worse. I appreciate that you didn’t mind working here today instead of the office. I hate the smell of fresh paint. The building owners promised it should be finished by tomorrow, so we can go back to the office on Monday.” The owners were in the process of renovating the building, and the smell of the fresh paint had given her a persistent headache. Thankfully, that part of the renovations was almost over.

“No problem. It’s a nice change of pace. I brought my laptop to go over the venues for the tour dates.”

As tour manager of Mouth2Mouth, it was Penni’s job to set the tour schedule. Grace had proven invaluable as Penni’s assistant, handling the office when she went on tour with the group.

“Let me grab my laptop, and we can work at the kitchen table. I’ll be right back.” Penni went into her living room then carried her laptop back into the kitchen seconds later. She came to a stop when she saw Grace about to open the sliding door to her backyard.

“Don’t go out there!” Penni rushed forward, shutting the door quickly and locking it.

Grace stared at her, open-mouthed at her reaction. “Sorry. It’s really pretty outside, so I thought it would be nice to work in the fresh air.”

“I would love to; except, we wouldn’t get much work done if we went out there.” Penni pointed out the clear door. “Look at the bushes.”

She loved working in the backyard on the days when the weather was warm. It was small with a little table and chairs that had comfortable cushions. It had a five-foot stone wall that created privacy from her neighbors with a hedge of bushes in front. The bushes were what she was pointing at now. It didn’t take Grace long to see the problem.

“Good grief! How many of them are there?”

“I don’t want to know. I’m not going out there to count the mean fuckers.” Penni eyed the innocuous bushes that were very pretty … until you noticed the large amount of bees flying in and out of the greenery.

“Kill them,” Grace advised.

“I thought of that; believe me. The last time I got stung, I notified the landlord. I should have stayed in my apartment,” Penni admitted glumly, eyeing the bees that prevented her from going outside to indulge in her favorite pastimes of sunbathing or reading, which were the reasons she had decided to rent the house.

“So why didn’t he take care of it?”

“Did you know bees are becoming extinct?”

Grace shook her head. “No.”

“Neither did I. The exterminator my landlord hired notified Fish and Wildlife. Now, not only can I not kill them, but I have to put up with them another couple of weeks until they move the colony. The University is going to take them to a spot where they can be researched.”

“That’s a bummer.”

“No shit,” Penni replied caustically. Any sympathy she’d had for the bee population had disappeared after the first couple of stings.

Grace laughed, shaking her head at Penni. “They’ll be gone in a few weeks. Then you’ll have your backyard back. Look on the bright side; they’re a hell of a deterrent for burglars.”

Penni shook off her ill humor, mentally throwing her negative thoughts into the air. It was a habit she had developed for when she found herself focusing on only negative thoughts. She hated to be in a bad mood. Her brother Shade had that covered. He was in a perpetual bad mood. Well, he had been before he’d married her bestie, Lily.

“I don’t need bees for protection. I can take care of myself,” Penni boasted. She was sure she could handle any situation. Besides, her brother was an enforcer for The Last Riders, and he had taught her how to defend herself as soon as her mother had bought her first bra for her.

“Don’t jinx yourself,” Grace warned.

“I don’t believe in luck.” Penni felt the chill of foreboding going down her spine. Shrugging it off, she also threw that out into the air. “Let’s get to work before that badass husband of yours comes back to pick you up.”

Penni settled down to work, forgetting about Grace’s warning. It was a warning that would come back to haunt her.
