As an immortal, elite hunter with elemental abilities, I’m no stranger to taking orders.
But I never thought my king would demand I teach a noble vampire how to control her newly surfaced powers. Especially when that noble vampire haunts my dreams in the best way.
Annika Sorokin is the most gorgeous vampire I’ve ever seen. She’s smart, sexy, and is fiercely loyal to her family—something I completely understand. But she’s not a one-and-done kind of vampire, so I keep my fantasies to myself.
And now I’m secluded on an island with her. Working nightly on her water-wielding abilities. With the island offering nowhere to run, her constant nearness is driving me mad with wanting her, but she deserves more than what I can give.
The more time we spend together, the more my no-relationship rule crumbles. We’re matched in so many ways, beyond our similar power, and there’s an undeniable need that pulses between us. She’s air to my fire, water to my ice, and soon I’m not sure how I’ve ever lived without her.
I’ve always viewed loving someone as a weakness, especially in a hunter’s line of work. We have enemies all over the world, now more than ever. And for me? They’re constantly searching for my weak spot.
Annika is mine. But she’s worth breaking every rule I have about love, and I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Dagon

The first day of December brings a frost that coats the ground Talon and I hunted on tonight, and as we return to the residence, a hot shower and at least a dozen pumpkin muffins are calling my name.

I’m halfway to the informal dining room where the snacks are when a very pregnant Olivia stops me mid-stride.

I blow out a breath, shaking my head at the female’s persistence.

“I’ve asked you for help for months,” she snaps. Her eyes are more severe than usual, which immediately has me on guard. “And now, I’m telling you.”

I cock a brow at her tone, glancing at her mate, Ransom, who steps between me and her with an apologetic look on his face. “Let’s not piss off the hunter,” Ransom says softly as he tries to gently pull her away.

“I don’t give a shit,” Oliva snaps as Ransom hauls her away. “You need to help her! It’s a mess upstairs! She’s a mess, and it wouldn’t take much for you to assist…” Her yells trail off as Ransom turns with her down a hallway.

I’m not intentionally being an asshole, but we’ve had a lot going on. Between taking on a massive horde of bloodmads a couple of weeks ago—thanks to Conrad, who died, and Samuel, who we lost, again, not to mention Zachariah almost losing his mate—I haven’t had time to even think of anything else.

But after the blow we delivered, despite Samual and Kyle Moorehouse evading us, we’ve bought ourselves a few days of some kind of peace, at least.

I sigh as I take the path away from my much-needed snacks and walk up the stairs.

As I hit the top step, my boot immediately slips on a thick trail of ice. I steady myself, following the path down the hallway, the ice leading into Annika’s suite. The entire floor is covered, so much so I have to carefully glide across it. Icicles hang from just about every inch of the ceiling but are more heavily congregated around the bathroom door.

“What in the Elsa shit is this?” I ask as I head that direction.

“In here!” Annika calls from behind the bathroom door.

I open it, taking her words as an invitation and freezing one step inside.

She’s bright fucking red and stark naked, with water frozen just above her breasts.

Jesus, she’s a knockout. Not that I hadn’t noticed that before…but damn.

Words tangle in my throat, shock and heat and all sorts of shit buzzing beneath my skin.

“Are you going to help get me out?” she asks, snapping me to reality. “Because this doesn’t hurt but I’m sure as hell stuck.”

Fuck me, the determination in her eyes is enough to have heat streaking through my veins. Never mind that she’s naked—that look is enough to grab anyone’s attention—but seeing as how she is naked, I lock that reaction the fuck up.

“I can thaw you,” I say, whirling around so my back is to her. I face my palm toward her where it hangs at my side, drawing just enough heat to start to melt the ice.

“Whoa,” Alek says as he steps into the room, glancing from me to Annika before immediately spinning around. “You’re excused from all hunter and assassin duties,” he says as he walks away.

“I’m not a teacher!” I snap, still thawing Annika without looking, which takes a bit of concentration.

“You are now, Professor Dagon,” the king retorts, leaving no room for argument, before he disappears from the room.

Fuck. My. Life.

CHAPTER 2

Annika

Iwait in one of the dining rooms in the residence, my knee anxiously bobbing beneath the mahogany table that’s large enough to seat twelve. Anxiety bubbles in my chest. It has everything to do with my newly surfaced powers and absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the king ordered Dagon to be my new teacher.

Dagon. The hunter.

The insanely gorgeous and equally infuriating hunter. The same one who saw me naked last night thanks to my power going rogue while I bathed.

Mortification ripples through me at the memory. I love my body, but him seeing me naked and in such a vulnerable position is a new level of embarrassment I didn’t know existed. I’m the daughter of Katya Sorokin, of the Sorokin line, for fuck’s sake. Niece of Olivia Sorokin, who’s not only the princess’s bodyguard, but also mated to one of the king’s right-hand Onyx Assassins. I come from a long line of females who watched over the hunters for centuries. Power runs in my family. Harnessing a new ability to control water should be easy for me to handle.

But I haven’t been handling it.

Not even a little bit. Which led to Oliva practically begging Dagon to work with me, which he refused until the king ordered him to.

I pretend not to be offended by him acting repulsed at the very idea of helping me learn to control my power. I have no idea why he feels the way he does. Maybe he finds the task beneath him? Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of teaching me—one of the females responsible for ensuring he and his brothers stayed locked in a chamber in stasis for centuries. But if that was the case, wouldn’t he understand the lengths my family had gone to ensure his safety while he slept?
As the leader of the immortal hunters, I’m no stranger to making tough decisions.
The hardest of which was going into stasis to save the world centuries ago—and losing my mate in the process.

Upon awaking in present day, I was told my mate died years ago.
The news crushed me, but the war we’re fighting is too important to forfeit my life…right now.
I function on autopilot despite the support of my hunter brothers, taking life one night at a time until we can end this war and I can return to the once-dark sleep that claimed me.

But on a solo hunt, I almost meet death much sooner than planned. Overrun by bloodmad vampires, I’m saved by another hunter on their trail…no, a huntress.
My mate.

Talia Ashcroft is the love of my life, but she’s not the same girl I was forced to leave behind.
She’s a lethal huntress, stronger and more powerful than I remember, not to mention as gorgeous as ever. Years of separation did nothing to tame the chemistry between us, and I’m elated that fate has given us a second chance.

There’s only one problem.
She hates me.
I broke her heart centuries ago, and she has no intention of giving it to me again.

But fate has brought us together as we work to capture a common enemy, and I’m not going to waste this chance to make amends.
Losing her is the biggest regret of my existence.
And I’ll do whatever it takes to prove to her that I’ll never choose duty over her again…
Even if it means letting go of the key to winning this war.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Zachariah

Lycan territory feels a lot like stepping across a threshold and into a vat of quicksand.

The lycans granted my presence on their lands tonight to investigate a lead after gathering some information from Mrs. Zorin, but it’s no secret the lycan dogs hate us.

A sentiment I share. The king had made leaps and bounds with his alliances with the beasts, but I still haven’t caught up.

They aren’t what I’m here for though.

Mrs. Zorin told me about a bloodmad vampire trail, and I hope to find Samuel’s scent. I didn’t tell Saint because he’d been busy helping calm Aurora after an episode. Dagon had been in hiding, dodging Olivia's requests that he help uncover whether her niece was an elemental like him, and Ajax and Talon had been preoccupied with their mates.

Which is fine, because I don’t need backup.

Not for one bloodmad vampire. Especially not with all the powers I carry inside me. Powers that even the king doesn’t know about. We have to keep most of them under wraps, me and my brothers, because I’d be labeled as a threat. The fact that I absorb the powers of anyone I kill, or anyone who willingly gives them to me, would be intimidating to even the most trusting of kings, let alone his assassins who are already wary of us.

Besides, solitude has been calling me since we’d awoken. Since I had to relive the memory of going into stasis and everything I gave up.

Lilac eyes flash into my memory; crystal clear as if I peered into them only yesterday.

I never stopped thinking about her. Never stop smelling her scent in the dead of the day while I slept.

She’s my first thought upon awakening, and my last as I fall asleep—a constant source of pain that grows stronger every night.

A branch creaks beneath my boot, and I curse myself for the sound, for getting distracted enough to not watch my footing as I traipse through the woods, hot on the trail of this vampire who sought refuge in lycan territory.

It doesn’t smell like Samuel, which leaves me feeling even more deflated than when I first started this hunt.

Either way, I have a duty to dispose of it. The thing has left a string of bodies from vampire to lycan territory, and it’s the one thing that I’ve been built to do.

A barrage of scents hit me as I clear a massive outcropping of trees, coming upon a wide-open cave that’s set straight into the base of a mountain. I scent at least three, possibly four, vampires. Each of them tinged with that bloodmadness me and my brothers have been trained to hunt and kill. The kind of vampire who is made two ways, either from toxic practices—denying blood upon transition and pairing it with physical and mental torture—or, from a vampire who stops towing the line with their thirst, gorging themselves on human blood so much they lose their moral center.

I’ve only taken one step toward the cave before they’re on me—not four, but eight—eight vampires with red eyes, bearing down on me in an instant.

Instinct takes over, and I draw my blades, slicing the necks of the two closest to me before dodging the hands of three more. My evasion tactics lead me deeper into the cave, something I know isn’t smart, but can’t avoid.

I dispatch another, taking the number down to five, but these things are relentless, attacking me with a mindless sense of malice that’s signature of a newly turned bloodmad vampire. There are slight hints of Samuel’s scent on them, and guilt fills my veins that my brother did this. Created these creatures in an attempt to throw us off his trail and to kill us at the same time.

And he might succeed, because I’ve never taken on this many by myself. Damn, I really shouldn’t have come alone.

Two of the vampires leap on me, taking me to the ground, baring their fangs, snapping at my neck as I hold them off. Hating how strong newly turned vampires are, I reach into my well of power, filling my hands with electricity and giving them both a shock that propels them across the cave.

Just as quickly, another two jump on me, and I turn my electric hands into fire, burning the two to ash as I find my footing.

A new smell slashes into the cave, as do the sounds of the screams of vampires as someone dances away from their clawed hands, stabbing two chests with one sword. The female wears the clothes of a huntress, something I haven’t seen in centuries. Black leather and a bright purple emblem emblazed across the back, which is all I can see of her.

“You take that one in the back,” she calls over her shoulder, and something about her voice jars me to my very core. “I'll handle these two.”
As an immortal, elite hunter with the ability to shift into any animal I like, I’m an expert at sneaking around.
But I never thought I’d have to pose as her pet.
Cassandra Zorin is the elegant, sexy, vampire daughter of a traitor. She’s as trustworthy as a pit viper, despite her claims of innocence. And when the king orders me to pose as her beloved pet panther while she infiltrates her heavily warded family estate, I can’t say no—even though I think we’re as likely to kill each other as our enemies.

Spending every waking minute with her has my hackles rising, among other things… I can’t help it. She’s gorgeous, with a sharp tongue and an even sharper set of fangs that I can’t stop thinking about. The more I learn about who she is beneath the polished, noble mask, the more I realize she’s nothing like I assumed.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Talon

The atmosphere in Alek’s office was anything but cozy, especially with the way Lachlan refused to sit the fuck down.

Seriously, the Highlander hovered behind the king like a damned nursemaid, but at least he didn’t insult me by keeping watch on me. Oh no, the second-in-command’s eyes were on the door behind me.

“I’m sure you’re wondering why you were summoned,” Alek said, shooting a look at Lachlan that said he’d had enough of the pacing, too.

“I can admit I’m curious.” I lounged back in the chair across from his desk.

“You have a skill I need,” Alek admitted, reaching into his drawer and pulling out a few papers. A quick glance told me they were the lists of names we’d acquired from the Sons. “As you know, we’re about to head into the war room for a meeting, and I would like you to agree to my plan before I pitch it to the rest of the table.”

“Before?” I arched an eyebrow.

“I’d rather know you’re on my side and agree before fighting Zachariah about sending you into danger,” he admitted. “You all tend to stick together.”

A slow smile played across my face. “You have my attention.” I casually crossed my ankle over my knee.

“These lists,” Alek said, and pushed the papers my way. “The last one arrived with Warrick Zorin.”

I nodded, knowing the others had put the kid through his paces before they’d let him out of the dungeon and into the barracks to train with the others. Not that he was a kid. He was just a fuck-ton younger than I was.

“He says that he got it from his older brother, Edward.” Alek looked me in the eye. “Which means the oldest Zorin is in league with the Sons, just like his father had been.”

My jaw flexed, seeing where this was headed. “You want me to leave my brother’s mission to hunt down Samuel and focus instead on the Sons.”

“I’m not saying that Samuel isn’t involved—” Alek started.

“Do me the honor of not bullshitting me.”

Lachlan’s focus changed from the door to me.

“Fine.” Alek shrugged. “I’m asking you to switch your focus, because you are uniquely able to get inside the fortress the Zorins call home.”

My brow furrowed. “You want me to do what? Change into a hawk? A mouse? How the fuck would that help get past the wards they have on that place?” The protections the Zorins kept on their family home weren’t just formidable, they were legendary, and while I’d known more than one Zorin in my time, it seemed this generation had taken their security to a whole new level.

“Not exactly.” Alek cringed.

“It’s about to get interesting.” Lachlan’s beard twitched, and I had the distinct impression that there was a joke I wasn’t in on.

A knock sounded softly on the door behind me.

“Come in,” Alek answered.

The door opened and Cassandra Zorin swept in, her gown rustling around her ankles. The female was still dressed formally, apparently having attended evening repast. Her panther sauntered in after her.

Fuck me, but Cassandra was exquisite to look at. High cheekbones, dark hair that I would have bet looked great sweeping over my thighs as she wrapped those blood-red, perfect lips around my cock made her…well, too gorgeous for her own good. She was tall and lithe, the perfect specimen of a female of our species, and she had a way of walking that made me wonder if her feet ever touched the floor.

She was the epitome of nobility, of grace, of centuries of selective breeding.

She was also as trustworthy as a fucking pit viper.

“You asked to see me, my king?” She dropped into a curtsy, sinking low enough to raise my eyebrows. What a well-trained little snake.

I couldn't help but wonder if my king’s mating mark was still falsely tattooed on her skin, or if she’d gone through the rather painful procedure to have it removed after Lyric had shown up and claimed Alek’s heart…and his mark.

“Please, sit.”

Cassandra rose just as gracefully as she’d dipped, and her dark eyes widened slightly as she saw me. Then she swallowed and sat in the chair next to me. The look on her face was…resigned.

She knew what was going on.

Interesting.

“Have you given thought to what we spoke about earlier?” Alek asked.

“I have,” she said, nodding once. She folded her hands in her lap and kept her spine ramrod straight.

“And?” Alek prodded as Lachlan crossed his arms over his chest.

“I’ll do it,” she said with a note of certainty that told me she’d given a lot of thought to his request. “If Warrick says that Edward has been making use of our family home from time to time, then I believe him.” She eyed the papers on the desk. “I’d like to not believe that Edward is involved in any of that, but I’m willing to journey home for a…sabbatical, and ferret out the truth. I’ll report back as agreed.”
I’ll do anything to save her.

As an immortal, elite Hunter with the ability to stop time,
I’ve never lost a battle.

Until her.

Grace is gorgeous, smart, and has zero fear of all six and half feet of me.
But she’s the last person I should be falling for.
First, she’s human.
Second, she’s dying.
And stopping time won’t save her.

When she becomes my enemy’s latest target, I make it my personal mission to keep her safe.
Having her close is a blessing and a curse, and the more time we spend together,
the more I realize our fates are intertwined in more ways than one.

But the outside threat is the least of my problems.
Her heartbeats are limited, and I can’t fathom my eternity without her.
The only cure is a sliver of hope packaged in a nightmare–it’ll either heal her or kill her faster.
Together, we’ll have to decide whether to savor the precious weeks we have, or risk it all for our chance at forever…
Before our enemy decides for us.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

AJAX

The thing about controlling something that’s supposed to be finite—like time—when already damn-near immortal, is that the longer I lived, the less it meant. Seconds blended into hours, into weeks, months, years, and those became decades that morphed into centuries.

Living over a thousand years could make even the most appreciative vampire a little bored, but having a power like mine—being able to stop and start time at will—was turning me…apathetic.

Had it really been a thousand years if I’d spent five hundred of them in stasis with my brothers? Adding in all the time I’d passed in my little bubble of solitude while pausing it for others, it was probably well over a thousand, actually.

I felt fucking ancient.

I stretched my legs out before me, crossed my booted feet, and leaned back against the wood slats of the too-small bench under the lamppost outside Edgemont Memorial, which had become my habit these last months. There was so much emotion on the faces of the humans coming and going through the glass doors of the hospital that I couldn't help but feel whatever they were manifesting.

If I were my brother Saint, I’d be able to project a little calm into the new father walking by with his partner, pushing their new baby toward a waiting car in a wheelchair that looked like it might fly away at any second with the amount of balloons tied to the handles. Not sure he was capable of projecting much more than pain right now, though.

A smile curved my lips at the careful way the father put the infant into the back of the sedan, handling the giant plastic case—shit, they said car seat now—with the utmost reverence. I could see the thrumming of his elevated pulse at his neck from the twenty feet that separated us, and smell the complicated mix of his fear and elation on the night breeze.

How did it feel to create life? To be responsible for something so helpless and yet so meaningful? Not that my life wasn’t meaningful. It was. I existed not only in service to my king, but also my chosen brothers, fighting the battles that kept our kind—vampires—alive.

A steady, familiar heartbeat approached from my left, and I didn’t bother turning to look, or reaching for a weapon. It was Talon, the youngest of my brothers, and at least he was in human form.

He took the seat next to me and crossed his ankle over his knee, resting his elbows back on the highest rung on the bench. “Figured I’d find you here.”

“So you have.” I scratched my chin through my dark beard. Talon was the only one out of the six of us—fuck, make that five after Samuel’s betrayal—that I didn’t have to fake a smile for or force a quippy remark. “You could have called, you know.”

“The convenience of modern technology still…annoys me. Everyone is in such a damned hurry. It’s all about instant gratification.” He glanced my way, arching a dark blond brow over a Nordic-blue eye. “Should I be worried that you’re hanging with the terminals again?”

“Look at you, mastering modern slang.” I grinned.

“You holding the world at bay while we caught up definitely helped.” He turned back toward the hospital with a smile. Out of all of us—Zachariah, Dagon, myself, and especially Saint—he fit into this modern era the easiest, but since his gift was shapeshifting, Talon had always been the quickest to adapt to new situations.

I envied him for that.

“Was it the Marvel marathon that helped the most?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest, the leather of my jacket tugging slightly over the Sigs holstered along the sides of my ribs. May nights were a touch too warm for outerwear, but I’d learned that humans tended to freak the fuck out when they saw me strapped. Turned out that at some point in the last few centuries, everyone had stopped walking around with swords. “Or maybe the hours and hours of historical documentaries we watched to catch up on the five centuries we spent in stasis?”

“It was the National Geographic specials.” He shrugged. “So many new animal forms to try out.” He could only turn into animals he’d seen, and since the first part of our lives had been spent in Europe and what was now Russia, he now had a wealth of new species to study and scare the shit out of us with.

“The Komodo dragon you pulled off yesterday evening at repast made Zachariah jump.” I studied the new father as he finished packing items into the trunk of the car, then led his partner to her seat with a look I recognized as pure love.

“Dagon didn’t laugh.” Talon’s brow furrowed.

“What, is my laughter not good enough for you now?” I teased, glancing his way and noting the tense set of his angular, aristocratic features.
The last attempt had only resulted in a mouthful or two before my stomach turned traitor, and the worst part was that everyone was in my fucking business. Alek. Lachlan. Ransom. Benedict. Hell, even Ajax had been on my ass about feeding. What the hell did they want from me? It wasn’t like I hadn’t tried.

I balanced the tray containing Avianna’s repast in one hand and knocked on her door with the other. Apples, slices of perfectly cooked Kobe beef, fluffy mashed potatoes, tender young broccoli, and three different varieties of cupcake graced the plate. I’d picked out her favorite foods, hoping to tempt her to eat a little more. There was even a bag of O-negative if she didn’t want to leave the room to feed.

Now if I could only get her to speak.

“Come in,” Olivia answered, and I twisted the handle, pushing open the heavy door that led to Avianna’s suite of rooms in the royal wing of the manor.

It didn’t matter how many times I’d been in this room, the scent of jasmine and lemongrass almost took me out at the knees. Maybe it was her royal blood, or maybe aristocrats like Avianna liked to bathe in obnoxious, expensive concoctions, but holy fuck did she smell good.

Gripping the tray with both hands, I kicked the door shut with my foot. The thing was made of steel—my boots weren’t about to damage it. The space might look frilly, but it could take a beating.

Kind of like the female who sat tucked into the corner of the couch, her black gown covering the legs she’d bent under her, her cerulean blue eyes meeting mine for a flash before she jerked her gaze away.

Avianna.

There were no words for what the sight of her did to me. I’d never been a big fan of emotions. They were messy, complicated, and got in the way. Numb and apathetic was my preferred state, but Avianna always managed to wring every emotion out of me with nothing but a glance.

A glance was all I was good for when it came to her.

Joy, that she’d somehow made it home after the twins, Saint and Samuel, had kidnapped her a month ago.

Rage that they still walked the earth, unpunished.

Wonder that beauty like hers existed in a world that had only shown me death.

Frustration that no matter how hard I tried, no matter how many times I’d apologized for not tracking her down that night, she still wouldn’t speak weeks after her return.

Envy for whatever man might actually be able to touch her one day.

Exasperation that she wouldn’t do what her brother, the king, asked in order to keep herself safe.

But all of that was manageable, really, as long as I kept a firm leash on it.

But it was the hunger that damn-near overwhelmed me. My gaze flickered thermal, as though she were the prey I needed to devour in every possible way.

Get the fuck over yourself.

I blinked and brought the room back into focus.

“Oh good, you’re here,” Olivia said, rising from the dark blue loveseat that sat opposite Avianna’s couch.

“I’m here,” I parroted like a fucking idiot, glancing over to the small dining area that filled a corner of the room.

I liked that Avianna had decorated her rooms—scratch that—this room in blues. Every shade covered the space, from the softest powder blue to cobalt and turquoise. It had always reminded me of a peacock. As for her actual bedchamber...well, that was beyond the farthest door, and beyond my knowledge.

I intended to keep it that way.

“Where would you like it, Avi?” Olivia asked, a hopeful note in her voice.

Of course, she wasn’t going to speak. Whatever they’d done to her in the weeks of her captivity had rendered her silent. I clenched the tray as wrath streamed through my veins, looking for any outlet to avenge what had happened to her.

Avi didn’t answer Olivia, her eyes meeting mine and narrowing slightly.

“Right,” Olivia said with a sigh, giving me a wide berth as she passed by, not that I could blame her. A few centuries of being a standoffish prick had rightfully earned me a reputation for being...well, a prick. “You could have asked Prudence to bring it up, you know,” she said softly.

“Figured you could use some time with Ransom,” I answered. It would have been easier to send Avi’s talem with her repast, but I hadn’t. I’d hand-delivered every single meal since she’d returned.

“Thanks for that.” Olivia offered me a smile and shut the door on her way out, leaving me alone with Avianna and the cursed silence that had come to be her trademark in the last couple of weeks.
Jocelyn, heiress to the witch queendom, lives to torment me. And with the disappearance of our princess? She’s become my brand new assignment.
Her skills are invaluable to bringing our princess home, but every second together brings us closer to a forbidden line.
She’s a witch—an insanely powerful, seductive, and feisty enchantress. I’m a vampire. Interspecies relationships are punishable by death.
But that doesn’t stop me from wanting her. When we’re together, it’s electric and addicting. She’s everything I shouldn’t want, but absolutely everything I need.
With a traitor working against us, and fate drawing us closer together, we’re soon caught up in a dangerous game that can cost us everything. And in the end, we’ll have to decide if we can defy fate or let it consume us.

“So, you’re here to find your match…because your mother wanted you to?” she asked, crossing her legs and adjusting her weight without so much as spilling a drop of her tea. The vampire was over four hundred years old and didn’t look a day over thirty. Her hair was still black as night and her brown eyes were more observant than I felt comfortable with.

“That’s right,” I said, leaning back in the plush leather chair across from hers. The office was tasteful, decorated with classic themes. Then again, for the prices she charged as the premiere matchmaker of our species, it was understandable how she afforded luxury in a well-to-do neighborhood of Edgemont City. “It was her final wish for me to start my own family.”

All she’d wanted was to see me settled and happy as she had been with my father.

“I’m so very sorry you lost her.” She gave me a sympathetic smile and placed her tea on the chairside table. “How recent was her passing?”

“It’s been a few decades.” I drummed my fingers on the armrest of my chair like it would take away the sting of grief. It didn’t. The problem with living for eternity was that vampire hearts were made to love just as long. Loss wasn’t easy.

“Then why now?” She picked up a dainty clipboard and pen, her spine ramrod straight as she jotted down a few notes.

Why now? Wasn’t that the question I’d been asking myself since I’d made the awkward call for this appointment? I shifted, mentally cursing myself for putting on a three-piece suit for the meeting. Leathers were far more comfortable but also had a tendency to scare the shit out of the civilian population. Besides, part of this process was convincing Gloria that I was civilized to begin with.

I wasn’t. Not by a fucking longshot. I just kept my shit buttoned up so it didn’t explode all over the people I cared about.

“I’m not sure, honestly. Mostly a feeling that it’s time. My friends have all recently found their mates.” In fact, Olivia and Ransom were still off on vacation, celebrating their new mark.

“Oh, you know I can’t guarantee that,” Gloria interrupted, her eyes widening slightly. “While my abilities do assure that the match will be pleasing to both parties, I can’t promise a mating bond. You know how rare they are within our species, and though warriors are more likely to bond, I simply don’t have the power to make that happen.”

I blinked, appreciating her honesty, especially given that my particular abilities inked any lies spoken around me straight onto my forearms. “Right. Of course. I’m not under the assumption that you can pluck mating bonds out of thin air. I’m just hoping for a…” I swallowed. “A suitable match.”

Fuck my brain, but the image of Jocelyn twirled right across it, her lavender hair tied up in something she called space braids as she flashed a grin at me, laughter dancing in her violet eyes. I ran my hand over my left forearm, where the last little white lie she’d told was still inked into my skin.

I love roses.

Damn, that woman loved putting new words on my arms just for the fun of it. She was a candy-coated hurricane with a million-dollar smile and a tongue sharper than the switchblade in my pocket.

Witches. And the heir to the witch throne? She was the most impetuous and reckless of them all. Why our princess Avianna had decided to befriend her was beyond me. Lachlan’s mate, Valor, was Jocelyn’s friend, too, which meant I ran into the little tempest far more than I cared to.

“Yes, suitable was the word you mentioned most,” she noted, glancing at her clipboard. “Along with honest, kind, trustworthy, and…tolerant, though you might have to explain that one to me.”

I cleared my throat. How fucking awkward was this? “Being in the service to our king means that I’m not always home by five.”

“Understood.” Gloria smiled and gave me a nod. “I’m assuming you’d like your match to be of appropriate social standing?”

Like a thoroughbred? Maybe this was a bad idea.

You’ve put off her last wishes for long enough, and given the rate of destruction in this war, you might not have much longer.

“Considering I spend most evenings surrounded by aristocrats, that would probably be for the best.” It would be easier for her that way. The aristocrats could be cruel, and since Cassandra—the highest-ranking female besides the queen—was under scrutiny given what her father had just pulled at the Sorokin’s, any newcomer would be under the microscope.
There’s one bed and she’s my best friend… For over two centuries, I’ve been the king’s assassin—his master of combat.
It’s my job to strategize and to train potential warriors, but I’ve never looked at any of them the way I look at Olivia—my best friend.
She’s all subtle curves, rich chocolate eyes, and as deadly as she is sexy.
With a new war knocking at our borders, the king orders us to awaken the Hunters—six of the world’s most lethal vampires.
Olivia’s family has guarded them for almost as long as she’s kept her secret from her parents:
She’s not some docile, mated lady-in-waiting, she’s actually a royal bodyguard.
But to convince her archaic family to wake the Hunters, Olivia has to come home with her mate.
No problem. How hard can it be to fake it for a couple of weeks?
But the line between pretending and reality quickly gets blurred.
The longer we play the part, the more I realize that Olivia and I are a perfect match.
Now I’m not only battling a nefarious plot against us, but my own primal urges to claim Olivia.
I might be the most lethal vampire on the planet, but she’s the only one who can bring me to my knees.
And when I’m forced to choose between my heart and my duty, everything we’ve worked for could come crashing down.

Books in Series:

Onyx Assassins Series by Samantha Whiskey

Books by Author:

Samantha Whiskey

1

Ransom

Alek: Meet me in the war room.

I glanced at the text message and wiped the sweat from my brow, then put back the two wakizashi swords I’d been training with, placing them in the long wall mount next to the katanas. My chest burned with exertion, but it felt good to shake the dust off the older weapons. I’d learned a long time ago that you had to fight with whatever was closest.

“You look good with those,” Benedict said, taking a break from pounding the shit out of the punching bag. Had to give it to the guy, though. He had one hell of a right hook. I’d been on the other side of it enough times to know.

“Thanks. Have to admit, I kind of miss combat before firearms.” There was no use for elegant weapons like these, now. Not when a bullet did just as much damage with a fraction of the effort.

“Only you would.” He grinned and went back to slugging the bag.

Across the gym, Olivia climbed out of the ring where she’d been sparring with Valor—Lachlan’s mate. The human was fast for a…well, human, but Olivia always took it easy on her.

Olivia was the fastest vampire I’d ever met in my life, and being the combat master for the Order meant I’d met more than a few vampires.

But in my hundreds of years, I’d never met one like her. Olivia Sorokin was one of a kind. Her lethal grace made her the most exemplary bodyguard I’d ever had a hand in training, not that I’d taught her much. By the time I’d arrived at the selection, she’d already proven herself deadly with blade, bow, and firearm…and that was back when muskets were a thing. Between her fighting skills, speed, and ability to act as a body double when needed for Princess Avianna, Olivia had been the perfect fit.

I yanked my eyes off the spandex that perfectly fit her phenomenal ass and typed out a reply to Alek.

Ransom: On my way

I hit send and ducked down to the refrigerator as Olivia came my way, her brow puckering as she responded to a text herself.

“Catch,” I called out, already tossing the extra bottle of water I’d grabbed.

“Thanks,” she answered, snatching it out of the air like a major league ballplayer.

The woman had instincts.

She flashed me a smile, and I had to remember how to unscrew the lid on my bottle. Her moves weren’t the only thing lethal about her. Olivia had a smile that would have launched a thousand ships if we were back in the era of Sparta and Troy. Hell, it probably would have launched them now if she’d ever shown interest in marrying or seeking a mate.

“No problem.” I grinned, then fumbled with my bottle. “Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey,” I mumbled under my breath.

“What?” she asked, tossing her long, thick braid back over her shoulder. The mass was the color of fresh espresso, which went right along with her scent—warm, rich chocolate and hazelnuts.

Twenty minutes around her, and I was always jonesing for a jar of Nutella.

“Nothing.” I twisted the top open and drained the whole bottle as we both headed for the door.

Two female trainees, both in their twenties, paused in the hallway just outside the door as we approached. Clarissa and…fuck, what was the brunette’s name…Sally? Sarah?

“Clarissa. Sophia.” Olivia nodded her head in greeting.

Sophia. That was it.

“Ladies,” I said, offering a smile as we passed by.

“Ransom.” Clarissa sighed my name as she fell back against the wall, her scent flooding the underground hallway with—

“Damn, doesn’t that ever get old?” Olivia asked as we both took a left at the fork in the tunnels, passing by one of the younger male trainees. In my defense, I didn’t know his name either. I wasn’t sexist. I just didn’t have time to get to know people. Not at the current state of our world.

“Leaving the gym at the same time as you? Never.” I grinned, keeping a healthy twelve inches between us, so the females didn’t get any ideas. Olivia had come too far in her career to have the younger generation gossiping about shit she didn’t even do.

Which was exactly why I kept my distance from her.

Was she hot as hell? Yes. Funny? You bet. Would I have given my left nut to spend a single day with her in my bed? Absolutely. But there was a line even I wouldn’t cross, and that line was Avianna—the king’s little sister. She’d raise holy hell if I screwed with her best friend and bodyguard.

Besides, the thing about being an immortal vampire was that your hookups were immortal, too, and the only thing more awkward about an evening after a one-day stand was having to work with that female every night. Since I knew better than to seek out anything more permanent in the relationship department—I risked my life too often for that bullshit—that left Olivia and I at friends. Only friends.
For two hundred years, I’ve been the second in command to the Vampire King. It’s my job to predict threats before they happen…but I never saw her coming.
Valor Moorehouse isn’t just the daughter of our greatest enemy, she’s a real pain in the ass, and according to the mark that just appeared—my mate. My head warns me against her captivating eyes, her sharp tongue, her delectable scent. But my heart? It demands to protect and claim.
I’m everything she was raised to hate, and she’s everything I can’t trust.
She wants me to help rescue her cousin, but we’re in the middle of an all-out war, and we’re seriously outnumbered.
Valor’s inside information may be the key to stopping the enemy…if I can trust her.
And if I can’t… I just might be walking into the deadliest trap of my immortal life.
I’d been searching for six fucking months only to come up empty every time.

Six. Fucking. Months.

It wasn’t like she was some master of disguise or could blend into a crowd, either. Fuck no, that woman was a knockout. Long, auburn hair that made me miss the highlands, coupled with pale green eyes the shade of the water just off the Florida coast and that wasn’t where her charms stopped. That body of hers was lithe and toned, with firm, high breasts that made a man’s mouth water, and I wasn’t even going to start on those fucking legs of hers because that would only lead me to her ass, which wasn’t up for discussion, especially since I wasn’t about to pull up to the shittiest motel in Lycan territory sporting a hard-on.

Which is what always happened when I thought too much about the most inconvenient human on the planet. I’d been in a state of semi-arousal that only rivaled my annoyance the last six months. Chasing Valor was sucking the joy right out of my life.

Nothing tasted sweet anymore, not even pussy. Feeding—damn, did I love feeding, had become a chore. Something to accomplish before heading out again for the next dead lead. I couldn’t even remember the last time I’d taken a female of any species to bed.

The never-ending search for Valor had consumed my whole existence.

I killed the engine of my Rover and cursed the clock. June meant longer days and shorter nights. And there was too much shit to get done at night to lose even a minute of it.

“You Lachlan?” a kid in his twenties asked, rolling his shoulders in a way that told me he hadn’t transitioned at a full moon yet. Once lycans hit the change, they stopped acting like badasses and just became them.

“Aye,” I answered. “You called about a witch problem?”

As the second in command to Alek Markov, I wasn’t just the general of his armies or his right-hand man, I was also one of the Onyx Assassins, a member of his elite guard that dispensed justice when Conclave—or Alek—demanded it.

And lately, that had been a lot.

With the Sons of Honor—those traitorous human sons of bitches—running amok, attacking supernaturals in broad moonlight, or daylight for the sun-walkers, doing their best to slay every creature with a drop of supernatural blood, our nights weren’t exactly peaceful anymore. The thing about vermin is they’ll hide while they can, but once they’re out in the open, exposed for the shit they are, it’s all teeth and claws.

“My father is in his office,” the kid nodded toward the blinking neon sign that read vacant. “He’s a friend of Luka’s, you know. They’re tight.”

“Is that so?” I managed not to roll my eyes. If someone was actually close to the Lycan Alpha, Luka, we knew about it. The guy was an asshole, but he made sure to protect what he loved.

“Yeah. They went to school together or something.” The kid nodded as a human hit a button on a nearby vending machine with the side of his hand, dispensing a can of whatever cancer tasted the sweetest. The guy didn’t look our way twice, but most people didn’t.

If humans noticed us, we were fucking up in more ways than one.

The kid twisted the rusted out doorknob and yanked the slab of aluminum across the concrete, the door sending a nails-on-a-chalkboard cringe down my spine.

“Dad, he’s here.”

I stepped back to give the guy some space. Wolves were always going on about that shit, and if it made my job easier, I could go with it. Fine. It wasn’t like my Glocks weren’t locked and loaded right under my arms. I’d even holstered the one with the silver bullet magazine.

Vampires didn’t survive hundreds of years like I had without taking a few precautions.

A muscled guy who stood about six-two, three inches shorter than me, walked out of the office. Clean cut. Classic rock T-shirt. Cargo shorts.

Then again, I was in tactical pants and a black wife-beater, so I wasn’t exactly earning the style points my friend Benedict prided himself on.

“You’re James?” I asked.

He nodded. “You’re one of the Onyx?”

I hooked my finger into my strap and pulled on the leather strap until my carved onyx medallion popped free. “Lachlan. You have a witch problem?”

The guy’s entire face darkened as he nodded. “This way.” He ordered his kid to man the desk, then led me up the rickety, external stairs of the motel to the second floor. The first door we passed was quiet. The second blared loud rap music that I could appreciate. The third—

I paused at the door frame, putting my hand on the thick red paint that covered the heavy wooden door. My heart’s cadence changed, and my stomach turned, not in nausea, but…anticipation? And that scent…

“Welcome home, my king.” Serge bowed his head and made room for me to pass. The guy was dressed in a suit, which was as casual as he got. He took his job as the head of the talem—our immortal stewards—just as seriously as I took my position as king.

“You know I was only gone for an hour, Serge. Relax a little. Maybe let me get the door every once in a while.” The sound of my boots echoed off the vaulted ceiling as I strode through the marble entry and past the sweeping, dual staircases that led to the second floor.

“As soon as I’m dead, sir,” Serge called after me.

I shook my head as I made my way into the expansive ballroom that consumed a quarter of the estate’s floorplan. We used the hall for celebrations, official court business, and all the other glitzy shit I couldn’t stand. Suited talem made their way down the four long tables that ran perpendicular to a raised dais, filling crystal goblets with fresh, crimson blood for the evening repast.

I muttered a curse. It was already ten o’clock, and none of the nobility had risen from their guest rooms yet. Lazy fucks.

Lachlan, my second in command, stood at the foot of the dais, looking as out of place in his leather and tats as I did. He was a hulking brute of a warrior with thick red hair and two Glocks openly holstered beneath his arms. No doubt one was loaded with regular ammunition and the other, silver. His eyes narrowed as I approached. Lesser vampires withered under that stare. I was anything but lesser.

“You look hungry or pissed, and I’m hoping it’s the first,” he said with a raised brow and a highland burr that even three hundred years on this continent hadn’t dulled.

“I just fed.” I reached his side, then turned to survey the hall as the first of the nobles trickled in, dressed like they were going to the opera, not just the first meal of the night.

“Pissed it is,” the Scotsman noted, turning to one of the talem who was making his way up the steps to the table I was supposed to be sitting at. “Don’t bother. He won’t drink the canned shite, anyways.”

True.

The talem nodded and took his pitcher to the next table.

“Alek, it would make my job protecting you a wee bit easier if you’d feed on the estate.” He nodded to the left, where a door led to a sumptuous, velvet upholstered room where willing humans waited eagerly for a set of fangs at their veins.

“I never said I needed your protection.” It was the same argument we’d had for the last few hundred years.

“For fuck’s sake,” Lachlan muttered. “They’re right here. They want it. They sign waivers. Though there’s something to be said for the days when they didn’t.” He flashed a grin at me.

“Did he go out to eat again?” Ransom asked with a smirk as he joined us at the foot of the platform. “Can’t blame him. The feeders get a little territorial when he’s involved. It’s like we’re back in the good ‘ol harem days.” He gave a wistful sigh.

“You weren’t alive in the harem days, jackass. None of us were. And don’t encourage him.” Lachlan shook his head and grumbled something about useless nobles as he looked down the tables.

There were half a dozen aristocrats in the hall now, all from the finest families, and they’d all chosen seats at the farthest end from the dais. This court was respected, admired, even emulated…but overall, it was feared.

We were feared.

I liked it that way.

I had no use for the simpering class of nobles who cared more about their proximity to the throne than they did for fighting to keep our species at the top of the immortal food chain. While all vampires were dangerous, those who served in the Order were the most lethal of our kind. We were bigger than average nobility, faster, stronger, and trained to carry out our duty by the Covenant—mete out the king’s justice.

My justice.

We were called the Order of the Onyx Assassins, not only for the onyx medallion each of us carried from the day we were initiated, but the death delivered by our hands.

“How long are these festivities, anyway?” Lachlan’s gaze moved from one noble to the next, assessing any potential threat as another one of my warriors joined us.

Benedict stood at my left and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Until equinox. Half the nobility aren’t even here yet,” Ransom answered, clearly enjoying Lachlan’s discomfort. “Has Lenora already cornered you? Rumor has it she’s looking to get her oldest daughter mated.”

“Fuck that.” Lachlan flinched.

“He’s not lying,” Benedict added with a touch of a smile. A quick glance at the unchanged, black tattoos on Benedict’s arms confirmed Ransom’s honesty. Whenever someone lied around Benedict, the exact words of that lie appeared on the skin of his forearm in a fresh, black tattoo. Most vampires outside our circle kept their mouths shut around him for that exact reason.
