Fake engagement. Real heat. In a small town that believes in second chances, can a guarded hero and a chaos-sweet sunshine turn a spark into something fireproof?

When free-spirited ceramic artist Ember Quinn watches her mountain studio go up in flames, she loses more than clay and kilns—she loses the life she built with her bare, paint-streaked hands. Enter Clay Walker: stoic, broad-shouldered firefighter with a past he won’t discuss and a glare that says not on my watch. He drags her out of the blaze, wraps her in his jacket…and into the town’s favorite love story when a paperwork mix-up lists him as her fiancé.

One headline in the Devil’s Peak Gazette and Copper Mountain is obsessed with their “romance born from the ashes.” To protect Ember from gossip—and keep a nosy insurance investigator from tanking her claim—Clay agrees to fake it: hand-holding at town events, couple’s trivia, matching smiles for the cameras. No touching. No kissing. No catching feelings.

But rules melt faster than wax at a bonfire. Soon the illusion starts to feel dangerously real—and when Ember learns what Clay’s been burning to forget, she must decide if this mountain man is worth the fight.

Perfect for fans of grumpy/sunshine, protector heroes, forced proximity, found family, and small-town slow burn with scorch

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Ember

Smoke tastes like pennies and heartbreak.

It curls over the roof of my studio in thick gray waves, eating the night sky, swallowing the little string of lanterns I hung an hour ago to make the place look “festive artisan mountain witch.” Now it looks like a Viking funeral.

“My kiln!” I choke, boots sliding on gravel as I sprint toward the porch. “My molds—my sketchbooks—”

A wall of heat slams me in the face, shocking me backward.

The porch light pops.

Somewhere metal screams.

No.

No. No. No.

I lunge for the door anyway, hand outstretched, brain doing that bad thing where it shuts off and leaves the survival part to vibes and adrenaline.

A band of steel wraps around my waist and yanks me off my feet.

I yelp, wind knocked out of me, and I’m suddenly airborne, spun, pinned to a chest as solid and hot as the burning building.

“Let me go!” I thrash, hair in my eyes, tears blurring everything. “My books are in there—my pieces—stop, let me—”

“Not a chance.” His voice is gravel, smoke, and command. “You’re not dying over clay, firecracker.”

He hauls me farther away from the building, boots planted wide, his turnout gear brushing against my jacket. My heels dig into gravel.

“Stop!” I claw at his arm, but it’s like trying to peel a boulder. “Please, my portfolio is in there, I have commissions—”

“Ember.” He says my name like he’s throwing a rope. “Look.”

He tips my chin toward the studio.

Through the front window, flames roll across the ceiling in a hungry orange wave. The glass cracks. The roof pops again. My little pottery wheel? Gone. My display shelves? Gone. All the hand-painted holiday mugs with stupid little pine trees on them?

My throat closes.

I sag in his hold.

“Yeah,” he mutters, lowering us both until I’m on my knees in the dirt and he’s still braced behind me like a shield. “That’s what I thought.”

I let out a sound I don’t recognize. Half-cough, half-sob, half-wounded animal. Three halves. I don’t care. I press my palms to my eyes.

“This was everything,” I whisper. “I saved for two years. I moved out of the city. I—”

A gloved hand comes into my line of sight, offering something dark. His coat. Heavy, warm, smelling like smoke and cedar and man.

“I don’t need—” I start.

He ignores me and drops it over my shoulders anyway. The weight of it nearly folds me.

“You’re shaking,” he says flatly.

“I’m not—”

“You are.” He plants one big palm between my shoulder blades, steadying me like I might tip over. “Breathe.”

Easy for him to say. He looks like the fire made him more alive.

Two other firefighters hustle past us toward the building, hose line snaking behind them. Another guy is yelling, “Back side’s clear! Kill the power!”

Someone else is pulling out tools.

I just kneel there in the gravel like an idiot while my whole life burns down twenty feet away.

“I could’ve stopped it,” I croak, staring. “I unplugged the kiln, I swear I did—”

“Electrical panels are old in these historic buildings,” he says, eyes on the flames. “We’ll know more after. But this isn’t on you.”

My head snaps toward him. “You don’t know that.”

“Yeah,” he says, turning his face toward mine. His jaw is dusted with ash. There’s a smear of soot along his cheekbone. He is infuriatingly handsome in that kind of weathered, stoic, my-hands-could-build-a-cabin kind of way. “I do.”

“You’re just saying that because—”

“Because I’ve seen actual negligence,” he cuts in, voice low. “This isn’t it. You did what you could. Sometimes shit fails.”

My vision wobbles again. I hate it. I hate crying in front of people, especially hot people, especially hot people who just carried me like I weigh nothing.

I suck in a shaky breath. The coat slips. I shove it off.

“I don’t need saving,” I snap, wiping my face with the back of my hand. “I needed to get my work.”

His brows pull together. “You needed to stay alive.”

“I would’ve been in and out in two seconds—”

He barks out a humorless laugh. “You’d be dead in five.”

“You can’t know that.”

“Ember.” He leans in, eyes sharp. “Flashovers don’t care about your timeline.”

I bristle. “Don’t firefighter-explain at me–and how do you know my name?”

“Because it’s a small town. And I will explain until my last breath if you keep trying to run into burning buildings.”

“I was not—”

“You were.”

We glare at each other, the world around us chaos—lights spinning, radios crackling, the sharp hiss of water hitting flame—but it all fades into static compared to the weight of his stare pinning me to the earth.

“You’re bossy,” I mutter finally.

“You’re reckless,” he fires back.

“Maybe I like risk.”

“Maybe I don’t like scraping artists off the floor.”

My mouth pops open. “Artists?”

His gaze flicks over me. I realize I still have paint on my forearms—from earlier, when I was glazing that stupid snowman platter for Mrs. Hollis.

He notices everything. “Should I call you something else?”
He’s grumpy, she’s sunshine, and this Christmas, opposites aren’t just attracting—they’re igniting...

When Ivy, a spirited school teacher and Christmas enthusiast, rolls into the snowy mountain town of Copper Mountain, she’s determined to spread holiday cheer with her “Naughty or Nice” contest for the locals. But her festive mission hits a snag when she crosses paths with Cole, the town’s brooding mechanic who has little patience for Christmas spirit—or for Ivy’s relentless cheer.

After a messy first meeting in his garage, Ivy decides that Cole, with his scowling gaze and refusal to embrace the season, is the perfect candidate for her Naughty List. From holiday dares and mistletoe mishaps to tangling up in Christmas lights, Ivy’s holiday challenge slowly chips away at Cole’s gruff exterior, bringing out a side of him he thought he’d long buried.

But as Ivy works her magic on his hardened heart, Cole begins to realize he’s not just warming up to Christmas—he’s falling for the one woman who’s brought a spark back into his life. And with every stolen kiss and heated embrace, Ivy finds herself wondering if the man she’s determined to ‘fix’ might just be the one she’s been searching for all along.

This Christmas, Ivy and Cole are about to discover that sometimes the best gifts can’t be wrapped up in a bow…

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Ivy

The icy air nips at my cheeks as I step out of my car, wrapping my arms around myself. It’s quiet up here, the soft crunch of my boots on the snow-covered gravel the only sound against the backdrop of pines dusted with fresh snowfall. The grungy sign outside the garage reads “Cole’s Repairs,” painted in faded red that almost blends into the brick.

The garage itself is uninviting, but I’m desperate. My car, filled to the brim with garlands, Santa hats, and reindeer antlers, sits awkwardly in front of the garage, steam puffing out from under the hood. Not exactly the festive entry I had in mind for this trip.

I make my way toward the open bay door, peeking inside. It’s dim, the scent of motor oil and grease heavy in the air, but I spot him instantly—broad shoulders hunched over a motorcycle, his hands working confidently at some piece of machinery. Even from here, I can see the tightness in his jaw, the focus etched across his face.

“Um… hello?” My voice bounces off the metal walls, interrupting the almost reverent silence of his workspace.

He doesn’t look up right away, but when he does, he takes his time, his gaze dragging up from my boots, over my sweater covered in tiny Christmas lights, and stopping at my red wool hat with its ridiculous pom-pom.

“You lost, Mrs. Claus?” His voice is a low rumble, steady and unimpressed.

I raise an eyebrow, refusing to be put off. “Actually, I was on my way up the mountain to find the perfect tree for my classroom. But it seems my car had other plans.”

His eyes flick to the festive chaos spilling out of my backseat, then back to me. “Looks like you’re hauling half of Santa’s workshop in there. You sure it’s not you who overloaded the poor thing?”

I narrow my eyes. “For your information, Mr. Grinch, I was doing Copper Mountain a favor, spreading some Christmas cheer.”

The corner of his mouth twitches, almost a smile. “Didn’t realize Copper Mountain needed saving. Or that I needed holiday cheer shoved in my face.”

“Everyone could use a little cheer,” I counter, folding my arms. “Especially you.”

“Oh, really?” He lets out a dry chuckle, his eyes sharp, assessing. “You think you can tell what I need, just by looking at me?”

The intensity in his gaze throws me off balance, but I plant my feet. “Let’s just say you look like someone who’d end up on the Naughty List.”

His laugh this time is full, rough, and it sends a jolt of heat straight through me. “Naughty List, huh?” He takes a step forward, closing the distance between us. “Careful, Mrs. Claus. You don’t wanna know what happens to those who try to put me on that list.”

I try to steady my breathing, even as he invades my space, the scent of motor oil and cedar filling my senses. “Well, someone has to keep you in check.”

“Good luck with that,” he mutters, his eyes grazing over me with an intensity that makes me feel exposed. “So, what am I supposed to do with this mess of yours?” He gestures toward my car, a hint of humor in his otherwise gruff expression.

I lift my chin, refusing to let him rattle me. “If you could look under the hood, that would be a start. I’m on a bit of a mission here, and I’m not letting a grumpy mechanic stop me.”

He smirks, one dark eyebrow arching. “Oh, is that right? A ‘mission,’ huh? Lemme guess—finding that perfect tree to ‘wow’ your little audience of six-year-olds?”

I meet his gaze head-on. “It’s actually third graders. And yes, I want the perfect tree. Why shouldn’t they have something festive and beautiful to look at?”

His eyes drop to my lips, lingering there a moment before he says, “I can think of plenty of beautiful things to look at.”

Heat floods my cheeks, but I keep my voice steady. “Well, I’m glad you agree.”

He grunts, unimpressed, then moves around me toward the car, his arm brushing against mine. His touch, rough and unintentional, leaves a trail of tingling awareness in its wake. He lifts the hood, peering inside, his strong hands working with practiced ease as he pokes around.

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you that Christmas spirit doesn’t come from how many shiny things you can pack into a car?” His voice is muffled as he bends under the hood.

“And didn’t anyone ever tell you that a little holiday cheer never killed anyone?” I shoot back, leaning against the car.

He straightens, his face suddenly inches from mine, his eyes narrowing in challenge. “You really think you can change people just by tossing a few garlands around?”

I hold my ground. “I think people sometimes need a reminder that there’s good in the world. That maybe, if they opened their hearts a little, they might find it, too.”

The tires crunch over the icy gravel road as I grip the steering wheel tighter, squinting through the windshield at the endless white ahead. Copper Mountain looks like a snow globe right now—serene, untouched, and perfect—but the winding road up its side is a different story.

The snow fell fast overnight, leaving everything slick and unpredictable. My little hatchback isn’t exactly made for mountain terrain, but I couldn’t leave Archer and Bella hanging. Their baby’s due any day now, and Bella called this morning saying the contractions were coming faster. I’d packed my bag, promised Aunt Betty I’d be careful, and hit the road.

I glance at my phone on the passenger seat. No service, of course. Just me, a rickety heater, and nerves jangling in time with every bump in the road.

“Piece of cake,” I mutter, mostly to convince myself.

A week in Copper Mountain, and I already feel like I’ve stepped into another universe. People here greet you by name, smile when you walk into the café, and treat you like one of their own. It’s a far cry from the world I left behind—the glittering chaos of Hollywood, where every smile hides an agenda.

I press the gas a little harder as the incline steepens, the heater wheezing in protest. I’ve been running from that life for weeks now, hoping the mountains will shelter me from the weight of my last name, the constant spotlight, and Chad, the man who once promised to love me but broke me instead.

Something massive lumbers out of the trees ahead, snapping me out of my spiraling thoughts.

I slam on the brakes and as I do, my tires hit a patch of ice and send me careering nose first into the snowbank.

A grizzly bear. No, two—three of them.

“Holy shit.” My heart leaps into my throat as the mother bear strides across the road, her cubs trailing behind her like shadows. They move slowly, purposefully, completely unbothered by the fact that they’re blocking my path.

I clutch the steering wheel, my heart thundering as I watch in stunned silence as the mama bear pauses and looks me dead in the eye before a low growl of warning rumbles past her lips. Then, just as soon as they arrived, they’re gone, slipping into the trees on the other side of the road.

“Okay, bears. You win. Just keep moving,” I whisper, half expecting them to turn back and challenge me.

I breathe a sigh of relief, shift into reverse, and tap the gas. The car spins.

I yank the wheel, panic tightening every muscle in my body, shifting back into drive and then attempt to shift into reverse quickly to rock myself out of the snow and ice I’m stuck in.

For a moment, everything goes still. Except my thundering heartbeat. My breath clouds the inside of the windshield, sharp and ragged.

“Great. Just great.”

I unbuckle my seatbelt and try to push open the door, but it’s jammed tight against the snow. I climb out on the passenger side, landing in knee-deep powder. The cold bites at my exposed skin, and the wind howls around me, carrying the faint echo of distant wildlife.

I glance around, half expecting the bears to reappear. Instead, I hear the creak of leather and the soft snort of a horse.

Then I see him.

A man on horseback emerges from the tree line, his silhouette sharp against the snow. He’s tall, broad-shouldered, and wrapped in a heavy jacket, his face partially hidden by a thick beard and a cowboy hat pulled low over his brow.

“What in the hell are you doing out here?” His voice is deep, rough, and laced with irritation.

“Nice to meet you too,” I shoot back, my teeth chattering.

He pulls the horse to a stop a few feet away, his sharp eyes assessing me from head to toe. “You always drive like that, or is today special?”

“I was avoiding a bear. Excuse me for trying not to get mauled.”

He swings down from the saddle with a practiced ease, his boots crunching through the snow as he approaches. Up close, he’s even more intimidating—towering, rugged, and radiating a kind of quiet strength that makes my pulse stutter.

“They don’t grow them like you in Hollywood,” I mutter under my breath.

“What was that?” His brow arches, a flicker of amusement softening his scowl.

“Nothing,” I say quickly, brushing the snow from my jacket. “I’m fine. I just need to figure out how to get my car out of this snowbank.”

He jerks his chin toward my car, now half-buried in snow. “That toy won’t make it another mile up this road. You’re lucky I found you, city girl.”

“Lucky,” I repeat, my tone dripping with sarcasm.

He crosses his arms, the corners of his mouth twitching. “Got a name, or should I just keep calling you city girl?”

“Indie,” I say, meeting his gaze head-on.

“Well, Indie, I’m King Steele. And you’re about one bad decision away from freezing out here.”
Tamlyn never planned to stay. As an environmentalist, her life was filled with adventure and a passion for protecting nature, always on the move and never looking back. But when her latest research leads her to Copper Mountain, everything changes. She didn’t expect to meet Barron, a rugged, fiercely protective lumberjack who’s as rooted to the land as the towering trees he harvests.

Barron built his life on Copper Mountain, content with his solitude, until Tamlyn bursts into his world—challenging everything he thought he knew about love and life. Their connection is undeniable, but their opposing views ignite more than just arguments. Tamlyn sees the beauty in the land Barron works so hard to tame, and Barron can’t resist the fire in her spirit, even though he knows she’s destined to leave.

As sparks fly between them, Barron battles his own fears of vulnerability, while Tamlyn wrestles with her desire to stay, to finally build something lasting. When passion turns into something deeper, Barron makes the boldest move of his life, willing to risk it all for the woman who’s become his home.

Will Tamlyn trade her nomadic ways for a future with the man who’s stolen her heart, or will she leave Copper Mountain behind forever?

The Men of Copper Mountain is a high-heat, emotional romance series that brings together rugged mountain men and the women strong enough to capture their hearts. Filled with steamy chemistry, heart-stopping tension, and a love as wild as the landscape, this book will sweep you away into a world where passion and desire are as untamed as the mountain itself.

Get ready to fall for Barron, the first of nine fiercely loyal brothers, each destined to meet their match in this captivating small-town romance series.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Barron

The mist clings to the trees like a secret, thick and low, softening the world as I make my way through the woods. My boots crunch over the damp leaves, each step slow and steady. I know these woods like the back of my hand, every curve of the path, every hidden dip and rise. The air is cool this morning, sharp against my skin, but I like it that way. Keeps me alert. Keeps me grounded.

The weight of the axe in my hand feels right. Solid. There’s comfort in its heaviness, the way it swings naturally at my side like an extension of me. Out here, it’s just me and the trees. No noise. No people. Just the rhythmic beat of my steps and the occasional rustle of the forest coming to life around me.

The first rays of sunlight pierce through the canopy, casting long shadows and golden beams across the ground. There’s something sacred about this time of day. Early. Before the world wakes up, before the chaos creeps in. I pause, inhaling the sharp scent of pine, the earth rich beneath it. This is where I belong. Among the trees. It’s simpler out here.

I stop at the tree I marked yesterday, its bark worn and rough beneath my fingers. I let my hand rest there a second longer than necessary, feeling the age of it, the strength. Trees don’t ask for anything, don’t demand more than they give. They’re honest. The world could use more of that.

I grip the axe, raising it high, and let it swing with practiced precision. The sharp thunk reverberates through the stillness, and for a moment, everything is quiet again. Just the echo of the strike fading into the mist. I repeat the motion, the rhythm as familiar as breathing. It’s not just work. It’s a release. A way to keep the thoughts at bay, to push everything down where it belongs.

But today, something’s different. The axe connects with the tree again, and instead of peace, a memory flickers. Her face. The one I try not to think about. Dark hair, soft smile. The way she used to fit against me, like she was made for it. Made for me. I swing the axe harder, the thought burning in my chest.

I told myself I’d stopped thinking about her. It’s been years, and I should’ve let it go by now. Should’ve moved on. But I haven’t. Not really. That laugh of hers, the way it used to fill up the quiet spaces...it’s still there, like an ache I can’t shake.

Another swing. The axe bites deep into the wood, and the tree groans in protest. I grit my teeth, pushing down the rush of frustration, but it keeps bubbling up. I never had a chance to make things right. That’s the worst part. I was too damn stubborn, too wrapped up in my own mess to see what I had. And now? Now it’s too late.

The tree starts to lean, cracking, splintering. I step back, watching as it topples, hitting the ground with a thud that shakes the earth. There’s something final about it. The sound, the impact. Like cutting down pieces of myself. But there’s no time for that kind of thinking. Not now. Not ever.

I stand there for a second, my breathing heavy, watching the fallen tree. The ache in my chest dulls, but it doesn’t disappear. It never does. It just fades enough to get through the day.

The familiar sound of an old engine struggling to survive rumbles through the air, cutting through the quiet of the woods. It’s followed by the inevitable sputter and hiss as the beat-up truck finally gives up and dies, right on cue. I don’t need to look up to know who it is. The brothers are here.

I keep swinging the axe, the sharp thunk of wood splitting beneath my hands grounding me. It’s the sound I live for. The feel of the forest giving way to my strength. I don't need conversation. I don't need noise. The work is all I need, all I can count on to drown out the rest.

But then I hear Knox’s laugh, loud and unapologetic, as it carries through the clearing. "Barron, you gonna pretend you don’t hear us again?"

I grunt in response, focusing on the tree in front of me. I feel their eyes on my back, but I don’t bother to turn around.

The truck doors slam shut, and I hear the scuff of boots on the earth. Knox, Pope, Creed, and Judge—four of my eight brothers arrive in all their loud, testosterone-filled glory and shuffle toward me, tools slung over their shoulders, grinning like they’re about to start trouble. They always do.

Judge gets there first, always eager to be the one to break my silence. "What’s the plan today, Barron?" His voice is rough, but there’s a hint of teasing in it.
Knox Steele is a man forged in fire—hardened by years of military service, scarred by loss, and convinced he’ll never need more than his quiet life on Copper Mountain. Until Perry walked into his world and turned it upside down.
Perry is everything Knox didn’t know he needed: strong, sweet, and determined to build a life free from her past. But just as Knox has built walls around his heart, he now finds himself tearing them down for the love he never dreamed he could have. Just when they think they’ve found their paradise, a ghost from the past returns, threatening to take away everything they’ve built. In a world where love was once Knox’s greatest fear, it’s now his most powerful weapon. And he’s ready to prove that no matter what, he’ll protect and cherish the woman who gave him everything he never thought he deserved.

The Men of Copper Mountain is a high-heat, emotional romance series that brings together rugged mountain men and the women strong enough to capture their hearts.
I slam the hammer down hard, the ring of metal against metal echoing off the stone walls of the forge. Sweat drips down the back of my neck, mixing with the heat from the fire, the sound of it sizzling against the anvil like a second heartbeat in this place. It’s always like this—me, the heat, the iron. No distractions. No interruptions. Just the steady rhythm of work, each strike pulling me deeper into that sweet spot where the world outside the forge doesn’t matter.

Then, the door creaks open.

I don’t turn right away. I never do. Folks know better than to interrupt me when I’m in the middle of a project. But something’s different about this time—something in the air changes. The faint scent of wildflowers cuts through the thick smoke, and that’s what pulls me out of the trance.

I glance up, wiping the sweat from my brow with the back of my arm, and there she is.

She stands in the doorway like she walked straight out of some magazine ad for a spring perfume. Soft, floral dress fluttering around her knees, her hair pulled back just enough to keep the waves in check, but loose enough that I can imagine how it would feel against my fingers. And then there’s her scent. Sweet but not overpowering. Like she’s meant to be standing in a flower shop instead of this rough, smoke-filled room.

“What can I do for you?” I growl, straightening up and setting the hammer down, wiping my hands on a rag hanging from my belt. I want to turn back to the anvil, but my eyes keep dragging back to her. Too soft for this place. Too soft for me.

She steps further inside, her heels clicking on the concrete floor. There’s something confident in the way she moves, even in the middle of all this heat and grit. “I need help with my truck,” she says, voice clear and steady, though I catch a hint of hesitation in her eyes. “It was my grandfather’s, and I want to get it looking pretty again.”

I stare at her for a beat longer than I should, taking in the way her dress clings to her hips as she shifts her weight from one foot to the other. This isn’t the kind of place she’s used to, and I’m not the kind of man she’s used to dealing with. But she doesn’t look away, doesn’t back down. I glance over her shoulder, catching sight of the old rust red Ford now parked in my driveway.

“Restoring a truck like that ain’t easy,” I finally say, crossing my arms over my chest, my voice rougher than usual. I’m trying to keep some distance between us, though I’m already failing. Something about her—the way she stands, the scent of her, that subtle determination in her eyes—stirs something in me I haven’t felt in a long time.

She smiles then, and it’s like she knows something I don’t. “I don’t do easy,” she replies, her tone playful, but there’s a challenge beneath it.

Hell.

I grunt, turning to the side, but I can still feel her eyes on me. “That the truck we’re talking about?” I ask, trying to keep my mind on the work, though my gaze keeps dragging back to her lips. Full. Soft. Damn distracting.

“Yes. A 1968 Ford,” she says, stepping closer. Her fingers brush the hood of a half-finished project sitting in the corner of the room, and the contrast between her delicate touch and the hard, cold metal is enough to make my pulse pick up. “My grandfather had it since before I was born. Thought you might be able to help.”

There’s a softness in her voice now, one that hits me in a place I thought I’d locked away a long time ago. But I can’t let it in. Not with her.

I glance over her shoulder, then back at her. “It’ll take time,” I say. “And I don’t work for free.”

She grins, and it lights up the room more than the forge ever could. “I didn’t think you did,” she replies, her voice teasing. “What if I help you around here? I might not know much about trucks, but I can learn.”

A laugh rumbles deep in my chest before I can stop it. The thought of her in that floral dress working around the forge is almost too much. She’s delicate, like a flower in a field of rough stone. But something about her determination pulls me in. “You? Working here?” I shake my head, but there’s a part of me that wants to see her try.

“Why not?” She tilts her head, that teasing glint in her eyes again. “Or maybe you think I can’t handle it.”

I step closer, drawn to her even though I know I shouldn’t be. I tower over her, the heat from the forge radiating through the air between us. Her scent wraps around me, and I can feel the pull of her like a physical thing. “You sure about that?” I ask, my voice low, rougher than I mean for it to be. “This place isn’t a flower shop.”
Pope Steele doesn’t do distractions. As a rugged carpenter, he thrives on order, precision, and the steady rhythm of his work. So when Ruby, the town’s soft-spoken but determined librarian, strolls into his construction site and accidentally topples a stack of lumber, his patience splinters.
Ruby knows books—not construction—and Pope’s gruff, no-nonsense attitude grates on her nerves. But she’s not one to back down, even if her past has left her guarded. She needs this library to be perfect for the town, and she’s not about to let a bad-tempered carpenter stand in her way.
As they work side by side, their clash of wills sparks more than just frustration. Sensual tension simmers between them, the heat rising as Pope’s strong hands guide Ruby through more than just blueprints. Sawdust and desire swirl around them, but Ruby’s scars from her past threaten to keep her from opening her heart again.

Can Pope prove that beneath his tough exterior beats a heart capable of love and devotion? Or will a secret from Ruby’s past destroy the foundation of their growing connection before it’s even built?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Pope

The rhythmic sound of hammering fills the construction site as I drive the last nail into the beam. The scent of fresh pine and sawdust mixes with the crisp mountain air, and it’s the only thing keeping me from losing my mind. I prefer days like this—just me, my tools, and the quiet satisfaction of building something with my hands. No distractions.

The new addition to the library is coming along fine, the framework of the new research wing of the building rising up against the backdrop of Copper Mountain. It’s a project I’ve taken on alone, and that’s exactly how I like it. No one to mess up my plans, no one to tell me how things should be done.

But then I hear it—a loud crash behind me, the unmistakable sound of lumber hitting the ground. I freeze, mid-swing, the weight of the hammer suddenly heavier in my grip.

“What the hell—” I spin around to see a woman, wide-eyed, standing over the scattered pile of wood she’s just knocked over.

She’s petite, with big brown eyes and a soft face that makes her look too sweet for her own good. Her chestnut hair falls in waves around her shoulders, and she’s dressed in a dress and boots, clearly out of place in the middle of a worksite. And she’s staring at the mess she made like she’s waiting for it to clean itself up.

“Jesus,” I mutter, shoving the hammer into my tool belt and striding over. “What are you doing?” My voice comes out rougher than I intend, but I don’t have time for this.

“I— I’m sorry,” she stammers, cheeks flushing pink. “I didn’t mean to... well, knock everything over.”

I cross my arms, staring her down. “You can’t just wander onto a construction site and start throwing things around.”

“I wasn’t throwing—” She stops, takes a breath, and straightens her shoulders like she’s gearing up for a fight. “I came to talk to you about the design for the new library. I had some questions—”

“And this was the best way to get my attention?” I snap, glancing at the pile of lumber scattered across the ground.

Her eyes narrow. “Maybe if you’d returned one of my calls, I wouldn’t have had to come down here in person.”

I blink at her, surprised by the spark in her voice. This isn’t the shy, delicate librarian I imagined when the town council told me who I’d be working with. There’s fire in her tone, and though she looks like she’d be more comfortable in a quiet room full of books, she’s standing her ground.

“Well, now that you’re here,” I say, crossing my arms tighter, “how about we avoid knocking over any more of my work?”

She flushes again, but there’s a flicker of pride in her eyes that tells me she’s not about to back down. “It was an accident. But I still need to talk to you about the library’s layout. Some of the design choices don’t make sense for the kind of space we need.”

I grit my teeth. I don’t need some librarian telling me how to do my job. “I’ve built plenty of libraries before. I think I know what I’m doing.”

Ruby—because that’s who this has to be, Ruby the librarian—lifts her chin slightly, meeting my gaze with defiance. “I’m sure you’re good at what you do, but this isn’t just about building walls and floors. It’s about creating a space for people—a community.”

I take a step closer, looming over her, half to shut her up and half because I can’t seem to stop myself. “A community isn’t much good if the building falls apart because someone didn’t listen to the guy with the hammer.” My voice drops lower, more like a growl, and I can see her swallow nervously, but her eyes stay locked on mine.

“I’m not here to cause trouble,” she says, her voice softer but no less firm. “I’m here because I care about this project.”

I take a deep breath, trying to shove down the irritation that’s bubbling up in me. This whole situation is ridiculous. She shouldn’t be here, distracting me, making me forget what I was doing. I run a hand through my hair, trying to regain some composure.

“You can’t just barge into a construction site, knocking things over,” I say again, but the edge in my voice is starting to soften.

“I didn’t mean to barge in,” she shoots back, and I can see that spark again, that same defiant look that makes something inside me twist in a way I’m not used to. “But I did mean to talk to you. I’m not going to sit back while you make decisions that impact the future of this library.”

I raise an eyebrow, intrigued despite myself. “You don’t even know me. What makes you think you’re going to change my mind?”
Bella never expected that moving to a small town to renovate an old inn would change her life. Fresh off a high-stakes job in the city, she’s left the chaos behind—and a toxic ex-boss who thought her success came with a price. Determined to prove she’s fine on her own, Bella’s not looking for distractions. But when she calls local electrician Archer Steele to fix the inn’s wiring, she gets a lot more than she bargained for.
Archer is rugged, down-to-earth, and every bit the small-town guy Bella thinks she’s left behind. But the electricity between them isn’t just in the walls—it’s in the heated glances and stolen touches that leave them both breathless. As they work side-by-side, sparks ignite, leading to impulsive, late-night encounters that scorch the lines between business and pleasure.
But when Bella’s past comes calling, threatening to pull her back to the life she fled, Archer isn’t ready to let her go. He may not be the city man she’s used to, but he’s ready to show her that love—like a good connection—requires the right wiring. Can Archer convince Bella that a future in Copper Mountain, with him, is everything she didn’t know she needed?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Bella

The cold mountain air bites at my skin the moment I step out of the car. I draw in a deep breath, but it doesn’t settle the churning in my stomach. Instead, the scent of pine needles and damp earth makes me feel even more out of place. My heeled boots sink into the gravel with a sharp crunch. I glance down, shaking my head at myself. Who the hell wears stilettos in a town like this? This isn’t Manhattan. This is Copper Mountain, population...small.

I turn to face the old inn, the one that now belongs to me, though “belong” feels like too grand a word for the relationship I already have with this place. The listing made it seem quaint, even charming in that rustic, "needs a little work" sort of way. What stands in front of me is neither. The roof dips in the middle, as if it’s given up on holding the sky up. Windows—cracked, some shattered—gape at me like hollow eyes. The porch looks ready to collapse under its own weight, let alone under the burden of guests. And the weeds? They’ve claimed the garden as their own.

The sight of it all makes my heart sink lower than it already was. What have I done?

I shut the car door with a click and pull my cashmere coat tighter around me, but it doesn’t shield me from the cold feeling of apprehension creeping down my spine. My breath fogs in front of me as I let out a long exhale, watching it dissipate into the mountain air. The place looks worse than it did online, like it’s taken one last breath and is now waiting for someone to declare it dead. The Copper Mountain Inn is more than a fixer-upper, it’s got one foot in the grave.

I hesitate before stepping toward the inn, my heels scraping against the cracked stone path. It feels like a warning. A smarter woman would get back in her car and drive straight back to the city, but I’m not smart today. I’m stubborn. And I’ve come too far to turn around now.

Each step I take toward the door sends a shiver of doubt through me. When my heel touches the first wooden step of the porch, it groans ominously, and I freeze, holding my breath like the old wood might sense my fear and swallow me whole. Perfect, I think. Just what I needed—an inn with a personality disorder.

I push the door open, the creak loud in the otherwise quiet mountain air, and step inside. The smell hits me first. Musty, old, and stale, like this place hasn’t breathed properly in years. Dust coats every surface, including the faded sheets covering the furniture. Sunlight trickles in through the grimy windows, casting long, eerie shadows across the floor.

For a moment, I stand still in the middle of the lobby, taking it all in. I can almost hear what it used to be—guests checking in, the low hum of conversation, the crackle of a fire in the hearth. But now, it’s just silence, and it presses in on me from all sides.

I wrap my arms around myself, fighting back the uncertainty threatening to take root in my mind. You wanted a fresh start. Here it is. But the thought rings hollow, just like this inn.

The floor creaks beneath my boots as I walk across the room, wiping my sleeve across the grimy window to look out at the town below. Copper Mountain is quaint in a way I’ve never known. Small shops line the narrow main street, and there’s a cafe that looks like it could have been lifted straight out of a postcard. Everything looks so quiet, too quiet. And the silence, the stillness of this place, it unsettles me. In the city, there was always noise, always movement, something to drown out the doubts, the voices in my head. Here, I’m alone with my thoughts, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that kind of confrontation.

As I stare out the window, my thoughts drift, unbidden, back to my ex-boss, David. His smug face looms in my mind like a ghost I can’t shake. The memory of our last encounter is fresh, too fresh. The way he’d looked at me, like I was something he could own. His hand on my wrist, tight enough to leave marks, and the way his voice had dropped to that condescending tone, “You’re making a mistake, Bella.”

I hadn’t needed to hear him say it. I knew the moment I told him that my career in the city was over. He made sure of that, firing me on the spot, as if I didn’t matter, as if the eight years I’d put into my work meant nothing. That’s what drove me here, to this rundown inn in a town that doesn’t know my name. But now, standing in the silence, surrounded by crumbling walls, I wonder if maybe he was right. Maybe I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life.
