The fourth, and final novel in New York Times bestselling author Kelly Elliott’s Meet Me in Montana series fires up the passion in a story about forgiveness and finding your soul mate.
Dirk Littlewood had the world at his feet and a life he claimed to love. He was a world-champion bull rider with plenty of women to keep his nights busy and make his inner loneliness nothing but a delusion.
Dirk’s life was exactly how he wanted it. Until it wasn’t.
The moment Merit Eden showed back up in Hamilton, Montana, everything was turned upside down. Life changed immediately and then tragedy struck.
Merit was the only woman who could bring Dirk to his knees—and the only woman who could heal his broken past. If only he’d let her in, they could heal each other in the process.
The only thing left for Dirk to do was figure out how to not only forgive himself, but accept forgiveness from the only woman he had ever truly loved…if only he was strong enough to withstand the heartbreak.
Strong Enough is a stand alone novel in the Meet Me in Montana series, but for a better reading experience the order is as follows:
1. Never Enough
2. Always Enough
3. Good Enough
4. Strong Enough

DIRK

Senior year of high school

Merit Eden.

She was beautiful. Dark hair and violet eyes that felt as if they looked deep inside you. She was short, but not too short, and Lord she had a body. One I had dreamt about more than once.

She was the girl who lived next door to me. The girl I’d known my entire life.

She was also my best friend. Well, besides Brock. I guess you could say Merit was the female version of Brock Shaw. She hadn’t really hung around with Brock and me, and I liked that. I liked that we had a different type of friendship. She had been mine, only mine, as selfish as that sounded.

Merit was the girl I had grown up with and treated like my sister until she’d started to invade my dreams, and not in a sisterly way, sometime around middle school. I tried like hell to ignore those feelings deep inside when she would smile or touch me. It was crazy to think I could ever want or expect more than a friendship from Merit. Not when I had feelings for Kaci. But when I was with Merit, I seemed to forget all about Kaci and the damn games she played with Brock and me.

Merit made everything seem so easy when we hung out together. I never had to try to be anything that I wasn’t when I was with her. With Kaci, that was all I ever did. With Kaci, it was an endless competition with Brock for attention. Merit, on the other hand, always lit up when she saw me. She always made me the center point in the room when we were together.

This last year of high school, though, I had fought like hell to ignore that strange feeling I got when I was around her. I pushed her away and focused on Kaci, even though I knew that was a losing battle. Still, the idea of giving in to my feelings for Merit was something I could never—would never—allow myself to do.

That was, until now. At eighteen, I was tired of fighting this attraction. But was it worth risking our friendship? Merit was my safe place. The one person I could tell everything to and she wouldn’t judge me. The one person I would do anything for. The problem was, she knew that.

“Why are you staring at me like that?” Merit asked while she chewed on her lower lip nervously. My eyes drifted down, and I had a sudden urge to haul her into my arms and kiss her. Touch her in ways I had only ever allowed myself to dream of. Truth be told, I’d had plenty of dirty dreams about Merit. The things she would do to me in those dreams would have me waking up with my cock in my hand and her name on my lips. Once awake, though, I forced myself to think of Kaci. Not Merit. It felt wrong to think of Merit like that. At least until this moment.

“I’m staring at you because you asked me to have sex with you, Merit.”

She nodded. “I trust you, Dirk. I…I love you, but not in that way,” she quickly said, even though her eyes disagreed. How had I never seen this look in her eyes before? This want, need … fucking hell. This desire.

My heart pounded in my chest at her words. “Then, in what way, because if you say like a brother, I’m not even sure how to respond to you asking me to take your virginity.”

Merit shook her head and tried to hide the tears building in her eyes and the way her chin wobbled. She swallowed hard, possibly thinking that this might have all been a mistake.

“Talk to me, Bugs.”

“You told me last weekend at Libby’s party that you wanted me. You…you touched me and kissed me. I thought you wanted me as much as I…”

Her voice trailed off, and I hated the hurt I saw in her eyes.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I had done all of that. Touched her, told her I wanted her. Hell, if someone hadn’t knocked on the bathroom door, I probably would have been an asshole and taken her right there—that’s how badly I had wanted her. She had been driving me mad all night.

When Merit showed up to the party in a tight little black dress, her hair pulled up in a ponytail so the arch of her neck was tempting me, and the smallest amount of makeup on to make her violet eyes pop even more, I nearly choked on my own tongue. She was beautiful, and I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her. Not to mention all the other guys at the party couldn’t either. I hated the way they stared at her and talked about how hot she was and the things they wanted to do to her. I wanted to pound their faces in.
The third novel in New York Times bestselling author Kelly Elliott’s Meet Me in Montana series shows how family and true love can heal a broken past.
After her mother died in a car accident when she was only five, and her father was determined not to show any emotions toward his only daughter, Timberlynn longs for a normal family. What she hadn’t planned on was finding that family in Hamilton, Montana—thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known in Atlanta, Georgia. She certainly didn’t plan on falling for Tanner Shaw. A handsome, charming, cowboy who swept her off her feet the moment he looked at her with eyes the color of the Montana sky.
Tanner Shaw was lost and confused…living a life without purpose, traveling between one city to the next. With a longing desire for something he could not quite pinpoint, he heads back to his hometown in Montana to spend Christmas with his family and clear his clouded head. One look at Timberlynn standing in his family’s kitchen, and his entire world is turned upside down. Or was it?
For once in his life, Tanner knew exactly what he wanted and was determined to prove to the only woman he had ever loved that what they shared was worth the risk. But winning Timberlynn Holden’s heart wasn’t going to be as easy as he thought. Can Tanner finally rope in the woman he loves, or will he be unable to help her mend her broken heart?
Good Enough is a stand alone novel in the Meet Me in Montana series.
Take one down and pass it around, ninety-seven bottles of milk on the wall!”

Mommy laughed as Daddy and I sang as loud as we could. “Goodness, how much longer until we get to the beach house?” she asked as she looked back at me.

“We just started the trip! We’ve got hours to go before we get there,” Daddy said, then turned and winked at me. “It’s our song, right, sweetheart?” He smiled, the sun shining on his hair, and I smiled back.

Suddenly, Mommy started to scream, and Daddy turned back to the road. Loud sounds from outside caused me to look out the window. Cars were driving all wrong. One was coming right toward us. “Oh my God! Oh my God! Frank!”

I closed my eyes and didn’t open them, even when I felt everything flying in the car and hitting me. Mommy screamed again, then everything stopped, and I couldn’t hear her anymore. At least until I heard another lady screaming and loud voices all around me.

“Call 911! Someone, call 911!”

“You need to get your little girl out of the car!”

Someone grabbed me, and I cried out. “Mommy!”

“Do not open your eyes, Timberlynn,” Daddy whispered as he took me from my seat. “Do you hear me? Keep them closed.”

I nodded and buried my face in his chest. “I won’t. I pwomise.” With my eyes closed tight, I slapped my hands over my ears, hoping all the loud noises would stop.

Daddy wrapped his arms tightly around me. “Don’t do this. Please don’t take her from us! God, please. I need someone to take my daughter! Please, I need to help my wife!”

Daddy moved me, and I was placed in someone else’s arms. I instantly cried out. “Daddy, no! Please don’t leave me! No!”

He stopped and looked back at me. “Timberlynn, I need to go get your mommy out of the car.”

My eyes drifted past Daddy and I looked at our car all bent and out of shape. “Daddy?” I yelled as a woman’s voice called, “Go! I’ve got her. Get her out of the car!”

“Daddy!” I shouted again as I watched him run to the car.

“It’s okay, sweetheart. Shh…your mommy and daddy are fine. Just close your eyes.”

I didn’t listen to the stranger. I watched as Daddy ran to our car. It was the wrong way up. The wheels…I could see the wheels. Another man, a policeman, helped Daddy get Mommy out of the car. Then Daddy screamed so loudly, making both me, and the stranger holding me, jump.

“Oh, no,” the stranger whispered and quickly turned me away from Daddy. She looked at me and smiled. “Your name is Timberlynn?”

I started to cry harder, but I nodded.

She smiled and wiped the tears from my face. “It’s going to be okay, Timberlynn. It will all be okay.”

I looked past her and saw Daddy on the ground, Mommy sitting in his lap. She was bleeding, and he was crying as he rocked her. Why wasn’t she getting up to come get me? I tried to run to him, but the strange lady held onto me tightly.

“It’s okay, Timberlynn. It’s okay.”

She buried my face into her chest, and even at my young age, somehow I knew she was not telling me the truth. That nothing would be okay. It would never be okay again.

Chapter One

TANNER

I sat on Trigger and stared out over the open pasture as I got ready to rope with Chance. You could almost feel the winter storm about to come in and blanket the distant Colorado mountains with snow. Right now they had patches of snow that only hinted that it was winter. My body ached to be home, though. To see the Montana mountains I had grown up in and loved so much. I sighed and looked down.

My ankle ached ever so slightly, and I rotated it completely out of habit. I’d broken it months back when I jumped off Trigger and landed wrong after winning the final round in Tulsa. I had taken some time off of roping after that to let it heal and stayed at my folks’ ranch back in Montana. It wasn’t anything that kept me from roping, though, and I could have easily pushed through the pain, but I needed that break. It was more of a mental break than a physical one, even if I didn’t want to admit it to myself back then. And now I yearned for the Montana skyline to be replaced by this Colorado one.

With a deep inhale, I took in the crisp winter air. The sun would be sinking behind the mountains soon, ending another night out on the road. A strange feeling of yearning hit me once again, and I couldn’t shake it. What was it that was making me feel this way lately? This longing to be home wasn’t anything new, that’s for sure. I loved being home on the ranch, but roping had always been my passion. At least, it had been up until my brothers all started to settle down and work with my father on the ranch. I missed them so damn much lately, and tonight it seemed that there was something else I was missing as well. I couldn’t put my finger on it, even though I tried. That pissed me off and made me feel less in control. Control was what kept me on that horse and kept me winning on the circuit. Not being in control meant my life and my career were both at the mercy of fate…and I didn’t like that one damn bit.
The second novel in New York Times bestselling author Kelly Elliott’s Meet Me in Montana series turns up the emotion with a story about finding true love and healing broken hearts.
Grieving the loss of her fiancé two years ago, Kaylee longs for a fresh start. When she follows her best friend from Atlanta to Hamilton, Montana, Kaylee looks forward to the wild terrain and a new town to help her forget the memories and dreams of a life that will never be hers.
After a tragic car accident, Ty Shaw is told he may never walk again. But Ty doesn’t easily accept defeat, and through grit, determination, and more physical therapy than any man should ever endure, he beats the odds. Even though he’ll never ride again, Ty longs to feel alive—the way he did on the Professional Bull Riders circuit.
When Kaylee meets Ty, she finds him just as captivating as the rugged landscape of Montana. When Ty is with Kaylee, he remembers just how good life can be. But can they move beyond their broken hearts and dreams to find a second chance with each other?
—Mark Twain

Prologue

TY

My dream was taken from me in less than a second. Everyone said it would be the eight seconds that I chased week after week that would end up landing me in the hospital with an injury I wouldn’t be able to recover from.

They were wrong.

I’d mastered the eight seconds over years of bull riding. That night had been no different. I’d stood in the middle of the arena and held up the trophy. The winner yet again, on the road to another world championship. My life had been perfect. Everything in my world was exactly how I’d wanted it.

All it took was one second to change it all. One wrong decision made by someone to climb into their car and drive drunk.

“When can I get back up on a bull?” I asked the doctor. My mother held on to my hand tightly as my father stood on the other side of the hospital bed. I was ignoring the throbbing pain in my leg that seemed to grow more intense as the doctor stood there and looked around the room before settling his gaze on me. A feeling of cold tingles rushed through my body, and I already knew the answer before he said it.

My two younger brothers, Brock and Tanner, stood off to the side. Both were in the same business as me. Brock was a professional bull rider and just below me in ranking, and Tanner was ranked in the top five in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings as a team roper. I took a quick look their way. They both looked exactly like how I felt.

Defeated.

“A bull?” the doctor asked, a bit of shock in his voice.

“Ty,” my mother whispered, squeezing my hand. I ignored the sadness in her tone.

“Son, did you even hear a word I just said?” the doctor asked.

I nodded. “Yes, you said my leg was partially crushed in the car accident. I’ll need another surgery once I heal from this one, then possibly another after that one, and I’m lucky the leg wasn’t severed. I heard you. Now, I’m asking you, when will I be able to get back up on a bull? How long will this injury take to heal?”

The doctor’s gaze drifted over to my mother and father, then back to me. He cleared his throat and slowly shook his head. “I’m sorry, Ty. You’ll never be able to bull ride again. For one, your leg is so badly injured you’ll be lucky if there isn’t permanent nerve damage. Putting full weight on it and walking normally will take a great deal of physical therapy. Painful physical therapy, and that’s if you’re able to regain full use of it. Second, no professional bull-riding association will clear you to ride, not with an injury like this. Ever.”

The walls in the room felt like they had begun to close in on me. The doctor’s words sounded as if he were talking into a can as each syllable grew more hollow and tinny. The whole room felt like it was disappearing as the only world I’d ever known seemed to be collapsing before me. I closed my eyes and took in a few deep breaths while I let his words sink in. Allowed the reality of my fate to settle around me.

Never bull ride again.

The thought made me sick to my stomach. Bull riding was my life. My dream. The only thing I knew how to do well.

Now it was gone. Taken from me in one alcohol-infused second.

Everyone kept saying I was so damn lucky and that I must have had a guardian angel on my side, because this could’ve been much, much worse. What the hell did they know? This was the worst thing that could ever happen to me.

When I was finally able to breathe without every inhalation burning my chest, I opened my eyes, looked directly at the doctor, and said, “I will regain full use of my leg again—that I can promise you. That drunk driver won’t get to take that away from me too.”

My mother leaned down and kissed my forehead.

Despite my declaration, it was in that moment that I felt myself start to slip into a pit of darkness. One so deep there was no way I would be able to see the pain and ultimate addiction that awaited me. With wide-open arms. The feeling of loneliness that would wrap itself around my soul and sink its claws in was smirking at me from a distance.

The knowledge that I’d never be good enough. For anyone. Ever again.

Chapter One

TY

“Junior, are you going to stand there staring off into space, or are you going to pull the damn fence tight?”

I glanced over to my father, who wore a concerned look. I hated that he felt like he still had to worry about me.

BROCK

“Daddy, when will you be home?”

My eyes closed, and I pulled in a slow, deep breath. I was positive the cracking sound coming from the vicinity of my chest was my heart breaking in two. Yet again. I hated that I was on the road and away from my son as much as I was, but I was trying to build our future. I only needed to bull ride, and win, for another year or two. I had plenty of money saved up, but if I could get at least one more championship under my belt, I would be guaranteed endorsements, and my son would always be taken care of.

Just a few more years of this, and then I can stop.

“I’ll be home Monday, buddy. I know I’ve been gone a couple of weeks. I had some things I had to do for work.”

“That swucks.”

“Blayze Brock Shaw!” I heard my mother shout.

I forced myself not to laugh and could only imagine the look on my mother’s face as my five-year-old son cursed. The result of being around my older brother, Ty, most likely.

“Blayze, you know better than to say a bad word,” I scolded. “That’s no way for a gentleman to talk.”

“But Uncle Ty and Uncle Tanner say that word all the time, Daddy. Why can’t I say it? You said so yerself: I’m a big boy.”

Sighing, I raked my fingers through my damp hair. “You are a big boy; you’re right. But you’re still not allowed to say bad words. Now, you apologize to Grams before she washes your mouth out with soap.”

“Again? I’m outa here, Daddy!” my son exclaimed.

I heard the phone drop and the sounds of his retreating cowboy boots taking him far away from my mother. I couldn’t help the smile on my face as I heard Mom pick up the phone and call after Blayze in his mad dash to get away.

“Brock, that boy of yours is going to drive me to drinking.”

“What did he mean again, Mama?”

“He got himself a mouthful of Ivory soap last night when he told Rose Monroe to go suck it after the PTA meeting. Of course, he throws a w in the word suck and has to make it sound all cute.”

This time, I did laugh.

“Brock Shaw, it is not funny.”

“I’m sorry. I really am, Mama. You have to admit, though, it’s pretty funny, and I’m sure he’s heard you say it about Rose a time or two.”

When she replied, I heard the smile in her voice, and I ached to be home. Stella Shaw was the type of woman who would do anything for anyone, but piss her off, and my mama could be a bear.

“Well, I’ve never said it to her face. And, yes, it was a bit funny. Especially when that uptight woman tried calling me out in front of the entire PTA last night about you not being around to raise your own child.”

Ouch. That hurts.

“You still feuding with her?” I asked.

“No. Yes. Maybe. Hell, I don’t know. The woman talked bad about my son. That type of thing doesn’t go unpunished, friend or no friend. She crossed a line when she insulted you.”

“Mama, she’s been insulting me since Blayze was born. You about done punishing her and ready to move on?”

“Ha! Hardly.”

Rolling my eyes, I cleared my throat. “Well, I guess I’d better get me some sleep. I never seem to have a good draw in Tacoma.”

“Brock?”

My breath stalled in my throat. I hated this part of our daily conversation. It was when I heard the fear in my mother’s voice, even though she tried desperately not to show it. The uncertainty that me following my dreams as a professional bull rider might not be the wisest thing anymore. Especially because I was the only parent my son had. It was something I fought internally every single day.

“I know, Mama.”

“I know you know, but I’m gonna say it anyway. Be careful and do your thing, but remember who’s really in charge.”

I nodded, even though I knew she couldn’t see me, and replied, “Yes, ma’am. May I say good night to Blayze?”

My mother called out my son’s name. “Blayze, Daddy wants to say goodbye! No, I’m not gonna wash your mouth out. Not this time anyway!”

I chuckled and again felt the deep ache of missing home. It didn’t take long for Blayze to get back on the line.

“Daddy, I’m gonna rope me a calf tomorrow!”

The drop in my stomach nearly made me sick. “Blayze, I was gonna show you that when I came home on Monday.”

“Yeah, I know, but Uncle Ty said that he could show me, ’cause you’re busy.”

My hand balled into a fist, and I counted to ten. I was going to kick my brother’s ass. Just because he couldn’t be on the circuit with me, he had to make sure I was as miserable as him. The only problem was, he was using my son to do it.
