She used to hunt monsters.

Now she’s married to one. Wren thought surviving demons, betrayal, and a forced marriage to Xavier Malus would be the hardest part. She was wrong.

As violence spreads across the city, the fragile peace between humans, vampires, and werewolves begins to fracture. Someone is pulling the strings—and the deeper Wren digs, the more she realizes the real enemy isn’t just monsters… it’s the system that created them.

At the center of it all is Xavier—powerful, ruthless, and the one man she should fear… but can’t stop loving.

When a trap is set that targets her family, Wren is forced into an impossible protect the people she loves, or risk everything to stop a war that could destroy them all.

Because this time, love might not be enough to save her

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter

One

The ground beneath us trembles and another crack breaks out along the floor of the warehouse. Black smoke billows out of the cement, and the smell of fire and brimstone chokes us. The sound of chains being dragged across stone reverberates off everything in the building, rattling the boxes stacked nearby. Xavier holds me closer against his chest and takes a step back.

This can’t be happening. But it is. My blood was the final key to unlocking a portal to hell.

“Toni,” I say weakly, fighting against the drugs Marco injected into my neck. Physically, I want to relent and allow my eyes to close. It takes everything inside me to resist it and I blink several times, looking around as my vision starts to blur. Red hellfire burns before us, flames rising from the crack in the middle of the sigil.

The prophecy. It’s true.

Marcus Henry’s words echo in my head. This was the plan all along. Use me—and my blood—to open a gate to hell and let out a demon. Why? I have no fucking idea and right now isn’t the time to try and figure it out. Right now, we need to leave.

But I can’t...not without Gia and Toni.

“Uh, Wren,” Zeke starts, looking from me to the sigil. “I’m guessing it’s too late to stop whatever this is.”

“Yeah,” I say weakly, and push against Xavier, wanting to get to my feet. He just holds me tighter against himself. “They used me…they used my blood. I’m…I’m the key.” I feel sick as the words tumble out of my mouth.

This was set up. Done on purpose. The Order of the Mystic Realm, an organization founded on protecting humanity from dark forces, summoned a demon to earth. It goes against everything they stand for, yet here we are, witnessing it happen.

I push against Xavier again, and this time he sets me down but keeps a steady hold of my waist. I feebly step forward, eyes narrowing as I look at Marco. He’s on the ground, kneeling with his hands on the floor just inches from the sigil. Reddish firelight flickers across his face and he stares down into the abyss with wide eyes.

“What did you do?” I say through gritted teeth. Marco looks up at me, blinking a few times.

“We did it,” he breathes, looking back into the fire. “We did it.” He jerks his head up, looking at Vivian, and a small smile plays on his face. “We brought forth—”

He’s cut off when the ground trembles again and the crack in the earth widens. My stomach twists and the feeling of impending doom pulls me down. Smoke rises around us, whirling up and making the smoke alarms go off.

“Toni,” I say as I look away. I only make it one step before Xavier catches my wrist.

“I’m sorry, Wren,” he says.

“No,” I tell him. “No.” I hold up my hand, not wanting to even let him finish. Toni will be okay. We’ll call an ambulance. They’ll give him blood. He’ll recover and be furious he was used as a pawn in this game and then we’ll find Gia and fix this whole thing like it never happened and we’ll talk about it over drinks and dinner. It will be okay. It has to be.

“I don’t hear a heartbeat anymore,” Xavier tells me gently, brows pinching together.

“What?” Vivian’s hand goes to her mouth and Marco scrambles to his feet. He reaches for her, irritably shaking his hand for her to take. Maybe it’s the drugs pumping through my system or maybe it’s the shock—probably both—but everything is happening in slow motion.

My vision blurs as I turn my head. There are several dead hunters on the ground around us, and the weight of demonic energy is getting heavier and heavier. Gia was here, in the building somewhere, and no one else has the same sense of urgency I do when it comes to finding her before some sort of monster crawls out of the portal or this place bursts into flames.

And Antonio is still lying on the floor right where I left him, with my jacket covering his face to protect him from the smoke. He’s not moving, and the pool of blood surrounding him is bigger than it was before. I squeeze my eyes shut.
She used to hunt monsters.
Now she’s married to one.

Wren Malus never expected to fall in love with a seven-hundred-year-old vampire…especially the powerful, dangerous man she was forced to marry. But Xavier Malus has become her protector, her partner, and the one person she trusts more than anyone in the world.
As the city edges toward chaos and old enemies close in, Wren fights to keep vampires, werewolves, and humans from turning on each other, knowing the fragile peace depends on her.

But when a deadly secret threatens everything she loves, Wren must choose between the life she swore to leave behind and the man she can’t bear to lose

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter

One

Abead of warm blood drips down my forehead, catching on my eyelashes. My heartbeat reverberates inside my chest and time stops. Devon’s eyes widen and his gaze meets mine for half a second before he collapses onto the ground. I stand there, rooted to the spot, still staring at the place Devon just was.

And then I blink and everything hits me all at once.

“No!” I scream and fall to my knees, hands shaking as I reach for the arrow that’s sticking out of Devon’s chest. All the years of training go out the window and I start to panic. “It’s okay,” I tell him, though by the amount of blood that’s pouring from the wound, I don’t think he will be. The arrow hit him right under his collarbone, missing his heart—I think. “You’re going to be okay.” Tears fill my eyes and I put my hands on the wound, meaning to stop the blood but when I press down, it only makes him bleed more.

Screaming, I jerk my hands back only to reach for him again. He feebly brings a hand up and I freeze, looking into his eyes as he wraps his fingers around mine.

“Stay away from them,” he pants, struggling to say each word. He coughs, sputtering up blood.

“Wren,” someone says, and I feel them coming up behind me.

“He’s not a vampire!” I cry, tears filling my eyes. I blink rapidly and try to remember what you should do when someone has been shot. Put pressure on the wound. Do not remove the arrow. I put my hands back to Devon’s chest. This isn’t the first time I’ve tended to someone gravely injured; in our line of work, you stumble across things like this pretty frequently. But I’ve never seen someone I care about—someone I love—hurt and dying before my eyes.

I can hear Leo and Ryder arguing several paces back and then Antonio’s hand lands on my shoulder. I turn and a mixture of my tears and Devon’s blood drips down my face.

"We thought he was—” Antonio starts, face sickly pale white. He holds my gaze for a moment and then jumps into action, taking off his plaid button-up shirt to use to stop the bleeding. “Keep him with us,” he tells me and I take one bloody hand from Devon’s chest and smooth back his hair.

“Hey,” I say, voice breaking. “You’re going to be fine.”

Devon’s eyes flutter shut and I shake him out of desperation. He’s going to bleed out if we don’t get him to a hospital—or if Xavier doesn’t get here in time.

“Get the car,” Antonio orders and I look up to see Leo and Ryder just standing there.

“I thought he was a vampire,” Ryder says, and I don’t know if he’s talking to me or just out loud to himself. “They said he took you. He was the one who took you.”

“Get the car!” I repeat, my tone shrill. My mind is torn; part is playing through what I should do as a hunter who is unbiased and well trained in intense situations like this. And the other part is panicking and terrified of losing Devon.

“We need to get him to the ER,” Antonio says. “Call 911 but anticipate taking him ourselves.”

His words should calm me, reminding me that we have a plan. But it sends another wave of fear through me: we don’t have the average eight minutes it takes for EMTs to arrive on scene.

“Hey, hey, hey,” I rush out, hands trembling as I watch Devon’s eyes flutter open and shut again. “Stay with me. You’re going to be okay.” I nod, more tears rolling down my face.

“I thought he was a vampire,” Ryder says again in disbelief. My heart is in my throat and I can hear Leo talking to the 911 dispatcher. Antonio presses down harder on the wound and Devon’s body shudders. I close my eyes, unable to look. I’ve never been bothered by anything, no matter how gruesome or gory. But this…I can’t handle this.

And it hits me like a sucker punch to the gut just how much Devon means to me. I’ve kept him at bay because I had to. He’s my brother-in-law. Even if we do end up having a child together, I’m not supposed to have feelings for him. I didn’t want to admit it to myself if I did. But I do, and it’s more complicated than I can comprehend right now. I’m not in love with him the way I’m falling for Xavier—or am I? It doesn’t matter at this moment what’s right or wrong. Which brother I should risk giving my heart to.

But I can’t deny it anymore. Faced with the reality of losing him, my heart is already breaking.

“You’re going to be okay,” I repeat. Everything around us is still and silent, echoing my rapid heartbeat in my ears. I’m aware of too much and nothing at the same time: Leo’s shoes scuffing on the loose gravel of the parking lot. The hum of the bright lights above us. The soft chirping of crickets in the distance. Traffic. Horns honking. The low hum of music from a bar a block or two over.
Wren Russo has always been an outsider. The only witch ever to be raised among the Order of the Mystic Realm, she has spent her life hunting demons alongside a family who doesn’t fully accept her. But nothing could prepare her for the ultimate betrayal of being handed over as part of a centuries-old pact to the most feared vampire family in the Malus Family.
Trapped in a gilded cage, Wren begins to unravel secrets buried for centuries about her own bloodline, the Order’s dark bargains, and the Malus family’s true intentions…especially Xavier Malus, the oldest and most powerful vampire in the Malus family. Xavier takes an unexpected interest in Wren, demanding she marry him in a political move to appease the Vampire Council. The more time she spends with him, the more she risks her hatred turning into passion. Will she see him as anything other than the monster he is?

Because in a game where bloodlines are currency and love can be the deadliest weakness of all, one wrong choice could mean the end—not just for Wren, but for everyone she’s ever sworn to protect

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

This is, by far, the most boring funeral I’ve ever been to. And as a member of the Order of the Mystic Realm, I’ve been to my fair share. This is no demon hunter’s funeral, as evidenced by the middle-aged women sitting in the front row, shoulders shaking as they silently cry.

There’s no crying at a hunter’s funeral. Instead, there are at least two drunken fights, tales of fighting monsters with someone trying to top whatever story was just told. Usually, some sort of knife-throwing competition starts followed by another drunken fight before the mood turns somber and we gather around our fallen comrade in a silent reverie, remembering the good times while trying not to process the fact that it could very easily be us lying there in a wooden coffin, about to be set ablaze.

But no, this is just a boring, run of the mill Christian service taking place in an outdated funeral home with one too many Febreze scented plug-ins trying to cover up the smell of water-damaged carpet and the sewage-leaking toilet in the reception area.

Yawning, I roll my neck and look around at the crowd gathered to honor Robert Henderson, who died “too soon” at the young age of fifty-four, leaving behind his wife and two kids. Part of me wants to put my hand over my stomach, go up to the casket and cry about how Bobby will never get to meet his unborn child or leave his wife like he promised, just to add some excitement to this joint.

Deciding that I’d rather just get through this service as fast as I can with no distractions, I let out a bored sigh, earning a glare from an elderly woman in the row in front of me. She quickly darts her gaze from my face to my body, no doubt taking in the fact that I’m wearing workout clothes to a funeral. But hey, my pants and matching crop top are black at least, a very respectable color if you ask me.

My expression changes from one of someone watching paint dry to that of someone sad to have lost such a good running buddy as Bobby. Which is my cover story for how I know him. It’s ironic, really, that Robert Henderson—known as Bobby to his friends—joined a running club three months ago only to drop dead of a heart attack in the middle of his office on a random Tuesday. The cleaning lady found him three hours after the office closed for the night, slumped over his desk.

I wonder if his wife thought he was having an affair. Did she have his location shared on her phone? Was she cursing his name and sending him nasty text messages, accusing him of doing something wrong when really he was face down in a puddle of dried drool, dead as a doornail? She probably wished it was an affair when she got the news he was dead. Though if he were my husband, a heart attack would be better than cheating on me. No man hurts me and gets away unscathed.

And I also wonder if the demon residing in Bobby’s body is as bored as I am, listening to the sermon droning on and on for what feels like forever. I have to suppress a laugh as I imagine the stiff, embalmed body suddenly sitting up. Normally, the most startling part about a person possessed by a demon is how their eyes are inked over from demonic energy. But if Bobby was properly embalmed, then eyelid caps would be over whatever is left of his eyeballs. Would the demon flick them off? Maybe they’d just fall off on their own.

I’ve encountered demons who have possessed dead bodies—which is lazy, if you ask me—but not a body that’s been laid out for a viewing like this. It was smart, perhaps, for the demon to slip into a body as it was being wheeled to the morgue. And it was smarter to lay low, waiting through the whole embalming process, laying still inside the empty body as it was washed and dressed for today. Smart, but not smart enough to evade my locator spell.

My phone dings with a text, and I make a face, silently apologizing to the same woman who judged me for wearing workout clothes. Really, they’re practical and comfortable, which is a winning combination in my book. And talk about unassuming. Did I just come back from a Pilates class and now I’m on my way to meet the other housewives for organic, gluten-free, non GMO, sugar-free, low carb smoothies or did I just cut the heart out of a forest hag who’s been terrorizing a small village in the Appalachian backwoods, where everyone knows the myths but not how to kill the monsters that lurk in the dark?
