Gage
I lost my first love. This time, I’m going to win the second girl who owns my heart—no matter the stakes.
Being the drummer for Raging Chaos is the only thing that’s kept me going for the past six years. Even the music isn’t enough to drown out the guilt that’s been suffocating me since what happened to Tori.
When Sadie storms into my life, ripping through my trepidations, sorrows, and bitterness, I can’t help but wonder if she could be my second chance.
I could love her, but in order to do that, I have to stop hating myself first.
Easier said than done. Before I have the chance to mend this broken heart, I push Sadie away and hit rock bottom.
The next time I see her, she has a baby. And if that’s not hurtful enough, it’s not just any baby.
It’s my baby.

Sadie
Bleeding hearts can still beat. I’m living proof of that.
At first, Gage was just someone to take away the pain—until I realized he was battling demons of his own.
I never meant to get too close to the devil with the drumsticks, but once I did, he shoved me out of his life with a force.
My heart might be cracked, but his is completely broken. And trying to save him would destroy us both.
So, I do the right thing and I walk away—not only to protect me but also our unborn baby.
I had no idea who Gage was to the world when I slipped into his bed. Now that I’m out of it, it’s clear he’ll have to clean up his act before he’s father material.
But then we meet again, and I’m reminded of the man he could be.
The man he was born to be, before tragedy struck and the chaos left his heart barely beating.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

GAGE

Summer

Before Senior Year

“It’s so fucking hot out,” I say, dropping into a seat outside the coffee shop where Declan and Braxton are already sitting and drinking their iced coffees. They’ve got a shit ton of papers strewn everywhere—lyrics, songs, and sheets of music—since we spend most of our time writing or playing music. When we graduate from high school in June, our goal is to get signed by Camden’s parents’ record label, Blackwood Records.

When I was little and banging on the drums my uncle bought me for Christmas, I never imagined I’d have a chance to play professionally one day. Every night, when my mom would leave for work, I’d use our neighbor’s Wi-Fi to watch YouTube videos on how to play. I never thought it’d go anywhere until I met Camden, Declan, and Braxton, who were hell-bent on starting a band and in need of a drummer. I played for them—and Camden’s dad—and learned, according to him, I was damn good, and if I stuck with them, I’d make a living one day from beating on those drums.

My thoughts go back to my uncle. He was the only decent person in my life… until he died from heart disease only a few short months before my mom died, leaving me alone in this fucking world.

“It’s too damn hot,” Declan agrees, snapping me from my thoughts as he lifts a paper and takes a look at a song Braxton wrote. “I think I saw it’s going to be in the hundreds today.” He drops the paper and takes a sip of his coffee. “Fuck, it’s too hot to work on music.”

“It’s too hot to move,” I say, wiping the sweat beading across my forehead. “Who the hell can even think in this heat?”

I’ve lived in New York my entire life, and I’m still not used to the few months a year when the heat waves come through and knock us all on our asses. Thankfully, fall and then winter will hit in a few months, and this ridiculous weather will be replaced with snow and ice. I’d take that over the humidity any day.

“You know what we should do?” Declan says, turning his phone around and showing us an image of a bunch of our classmates at the beach. I’m about to tell him he’s lost his mind when I spot one classmate in particular. Bright red hair, piercing green eyes, and the body of a damn goddess, Tori Spears is the definition of a teenage wet dream.

“I’m in,” I say without hesitation. I’ve had my eye on her for months. The only problem is, she and her best friends, Layla and Kaylee, have been on a no dating kick the past year since Layla’s boyfriend cheated on her and broke her heart. Since the school year is over and we’re about to start our senior year, I’m hoping that shit will be over, and I can slide in and take my chance.

“You don’t even like any of those assholes,” Braxton says with a laugh, reading my mind.

“I don’t need to like them to get in the water and cool down.” I stand, down the last of my iced coffee, and chuck the cup into the trash. “It’s too hot to even smoke. Fuck it, let’s go.”

Declan chuckles. “He saw Tori in the picture. He’s been eyeing that cheerleader for months.”

“Tori?” Braxton says with a laugh. “Actually, I can totally see it. She’s all cheerleader meets emo with her short skirts, black lipstick, and fishnet stockings. She’s like the least peppy cheerleader on the squad. It’s the perfect match made in hell.”

Declan nods, and I punch Braxton in the arm. “Fuck you, asshole. Let’s go.”

A couple of hours later, we arrive at the beach. The place is packed, and I almost consider turning around and going home, but then I remember home fucking sucks, and Tori’s here somewhere. After a few beats of scanning the area, I spot her, along with Kaylee and Layla, lying out in sexy as fuck bikinis surrounded by a bunch of jocks.

Layla glances up, noticing us first, followed by Kaylee and then Tori, whose gaze goes straight to me for several seconds before she turns back to her friends.

They whisper back and forth, and then a few seconds later, the three of them head our way. They’re all in tiny as hell bathing suits, but once my eyes land on Tori, she’s the only one I see. Sporting an all-black string bikini, she saunters straight over to me and wraps her arms around my neck, whispering, “Go with it,” before her lips lock with mine.

The kiss is intense as fuck. Our mouths and tongues devour each other. She tastes sweet like mint, and as our kiss deepens, the gum responsible for her flavor ends up in my mouth. When she realizes what she did, she pulls back and laughs. “I’m so sorry. That was not supposed to happen.”
Kendall

My life has been an endless loop of heartache and breakup songs.

I’ve lived in fear that I’m broken and will never find the kind of love that would piece me back together into something whole.

When my boyfriend proposes, I say yes, desperate for an easy fix. For a super-glue solution.

But, on the day of my wedding, when my dad tells me to follow my heart, it doesn’t lead me down the aisle.

Instead, it takes me straight to Declan Pierce’s car—where I crash his road trip.

The more time we spend together, the more he shows me it’s okay to be broken.

Declan

I’ve had feelings for my best friend’s sister for as long as I can remember.

Watching her jump from guy to guy, I’ve been biding my time, waiting for the right moment to tell her.

And then she does something I never thought she’d do…she gets engaged.

This is the part where I’m starting to accept that the woman I love will never be mine.

Until she jumps into my car in her wedding gown and tells me to floor it.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PLAYLIST

“Love You Like That”- Canaan Smith

The bitch yapping on the screen is cut off by an incoming call from my mom. I hit ignore, but it immediately starts up again.

“Another, sir?” the bartender asks, nodding toward my empty glass.

“Yeah, and you can keep ’em coming,” I tell him as my phone rings again. “As a matter of fact, if you could just bring me a bottle, that’d be great.” Since the bar I’m drinking at is located in the building I live in, they have my card on file. Normally, I’d just drink in my apartment, but right now, it’s empty and lonely, and I hate being there more than I have to be.

The bartender nods and grabs me a new bottle, opening and placing it on the bar top, along with a larger glass.

“If you need anything else, let me know,” he says before he walks away to help someone at the other end of the bar.

My phone starts up again, and since she’s clearly not going to stop until I answer, I hit accept and bring my phone up to my ear. “Yeah.” I pour myself another double shot of Johnnie Walker Blue Label—my go-to—and throw it back.

“Hello? Who is this?”

“You called me, Mom,” I say dryly.

“Declan, I wasn’t sure if it was you. Is that how you answer the phone for everyone who calls? It’s rather rude. I know you’re in a band, but—” The word band comes out sounding like a curse word, and I sigh, already exhausted by this conversation.

“Mom—”

“What if it were someone important? A business—”

“Mom!” I bark, having zero fucking patience for her shit today.

“What in the world is wrong with you?” she asks, sounding as if I’ve offended her. “Have you lost all respect for your elders? I’m your mother, not one of your trashy friends. Don’t—”

Fuck, I’ve had enough. “Is it an emergency?”

“Excuse me?”

“Your reason for calling incessantly. Is it an emergency? Because I’m really not in the mood to talk.”

“Yes, it is, actually. Your father and I saw the news. That… friend of yours almost died, and they said your band is over. Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because one, you don’t like my friends, so I didn’t think you would give a shit that he almost died.” Since the day I became friends with Camden and Braxton, who asked me to join their band—later, recruiting Gage—she and my dad have been negative as hell, trying everything in their power to get me to “stop messing around with the wrong crowd.” It’s been over ten years, and they still don’t take my career seriously.

“And two,” I add, “our band isn’t over. We’re taking a break, so if you’re calling to gloat or whatever, save it.”

I know I sound disrespectful as hell, and normally, I try a lot harder to be the son she and my father want me to be—the son I’ll never fully be. Since I refuse to give up being part of the band, I make it a point to speak properly and dress nicely. I don’t have any tattoos or piercings, but I do have long hair, which drives them insane—but in my defense, I had long hair before the band—so when I’m at home or at a function they’ve guilted me into attending, I make sure to wear it up and out of my face. But she’s called me at the wrong time, at a moment when I just don’t give a fuck about being nice or proper or respectful, especially to the woman who has done nothing but talk shit about the band since we started it over a decade ago.
Braxton

Our senior year, I promised my girl forever.

Forever, as it turned out, wasn't enough. She told me so in her actions. When she took a match to my life, burning it to ash.

I headed to LA with my band—Raging Chaos—like we always planned, while Kaylee went to college, taking my damaged heart with her.

Kaylee

When you love someone, you let them go. But what I did was so much worse.

Because instead of pushing him away, I shoved Braxton straight over the edge.

I’ve spent the past several years avoiding him, trying to make things right.

When my reputation has been dragged through the mud, and I’m given the opportunity to clean it up, I have no choice but to cross paths with him again.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Like real life, the characters are far from perfect, make morally gray decisions, and deal with subjects that may be sensitive for some readers. If you are looking for a safe romance, this series is not for you.
- Braxton Lutz, Raging Chaos

CHAPTER ONE

BRAXTON

THE PRESENT: HIGH SCHOOL PRE-GRADUATION PARTY

“Tell me this isn’t real. Tell me you didn’t just fuck the captain of the goddamn football team in his bedroom... in his fucking bed.”

I step toward my girlfriend, my body vibrating with a mixture of pain and anger and confusion. When I received several texts from different people telling me what happened, I thought it was a sick joke, a misunderstanding, until I got on Instagram and found the post myself.

A picture of Kaylee in her bra and underwear lying on the bed. A selfie of the two of them—him not wearing a shirt and her still in her bra. And the last one... the one that hurt the most—them kissing. His goddamn lips on hers. Touching what’s supposed to be mine. The caption read: No better way to end high school than scoring with the cheer captain. #touchdown

“Tell me!” I bark, making her jump. Fresh tears well in her lids and fall over, coursing down her cheeks as if she’s the one who’s been hurt and betrayed. As if she isn’t the one who just destroyed everything. “Tell me the pictures are a joke.” I step toward the only girl I’ve ever loved, the only girl I’ve ever given my heart to, and palm the side of her face, needing to feel her soft skin for what I know will be the last time. Because I can forgive a lot of things, but I can’t forgive cheating.

“Kaylee,” I choke out. “Please, baby,” I beg, not wanting any of this to be real. Wanting to go back to my house, go to sleep, and wake up with all of this being nothing more than a fucking nightmare. “Tell me what I saw isn’t true.”

As I stare into the red-rimmed gray eyes of the girl I’ve spent the past ten months giving my heart to, I can’t help but wonder where the hell it all went wrong.

CHAPTER TWO

BRAXTON

SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR

“It’s so fucking hot out,” Gage says, dropping into a seat outside the coffee shop where Declan and I are already sitting and drinking our iced coffees. We have a bunch of papers strewn everywhere—lyrics, songs, sheets of music. The three of us, along with Camden—who’s out of town for the summer with his pop star sister who’s on tour—are in a band. I know, I know... Who hasn’t been in a band? Well, unlike most teenage bands, we’re actually damn good, and thanks to Camden’s family, who owns Blackwood Records, one of the largest record labels in the country, we’ll be getting signed after we graduate in June.

“It’s too damn hot,” Declan agrees. “I think I saw it’s going to be in the hundreds today.” He lifts the paper and reads over the most recent song I wrote. It’s called “Cheater” and is an ode to my piece-of-shit mother who cheated on my father, saying she wasn’t meant to be a mother or a wife, then walked out the door, never looking back.

“Fuck, it’s too hot to work on music.” Declan drops the paper and takes a sip of his coffee.

“It’s too hot to move,” Gage bitches. “Who in the hell can even think in this heat?”
Camden:
I’ve been in love with my best friend since high school. My biggest regret? Walking away without telling her.
I planned to. But then catastrophe struck, making us part ways without a word. She left for Boston with her fiancé, while I left for L.A. with my band–Raging Chaos.
For the next five years, I lived and breathed music, trying to forget the beautiful girl who shattered my heart without even knowing it.
Until I see her again… I walked away once, and I’ve learned my lesson. Layla is my forever, not another item in my pile of regrets. And she’s about to find that out.
Layla:
The moment I saw Camden on stage, something inside me came to life. His tragic song of unrequited love was a confession that had me questioning everything.
Five years might’ve changed who we are—he’s a rock star and I’m a single mom—but my feelings for him are as strong as ever.
His lyrics make falling in love seem easy. For him—maybe it is. Only I’ve learned the hard way that real life isn’t as simple as writing a love song.

- Camden Blackwood, Raging Chaos

CHAPTER ONE

CAMDEN

THE PRESENT: HIGH SCHOOL PRE-GRADUATION PARTY

“So you’re really going to let it happen, huh?” Declan asks, taking a sip of his beer. “You’re going to let her go off to college with that asshole without telling her how you feel?”

I flip the hood of my jacket up and tug on the strings, tightening it to cover my head. “She’s in love,” I say dryly, then take a swig of my beer, chugging it down in the hopes of getting drunk enough to believe the words I’m spewing.

“I missed my chance, and I’m not about to be that guy.” Draining the last of my beer, I drop the empty bottle onto the table and stand so I can grab another one.

“I’d bet my ass if she knew how you felt, she wouldn’t be with him,” Declan points out as we push through the crowded room of our classmates celebrating our impending graduation in various ways—some legal, some not so much—to the kitchen.

“She knows how I feel.” I scoff, grabbing a Solo cup and a bottle of vodka so I can mix myself a stronger drink. Beer isn’t going to cut it tonight. Not if I want to forget.

Declan barks out an obnoxious laugh. “Sure, she knows you care about her… as a friend, but you’ve never actually told her you’re in love with her.”

“And when the hell was I supposed to do that?” I huff, forgetting the cup and guzzling straight from the bottle. I welcome the burn as the liquid slides down my throat and into my belly, warming my insides.

“I don’t know, but if you don’t tell her soon, it really will be too late.”

“What if she turns me down?” I ask, sounding like a damn pussy.

“I can’t imagine it,” Declan says, taking a sip of his drink. “For the past three years, every time that girl looks at you, it’s as if you both are the only two people in the room.”

I love my best friend, but the guy is such a fucking hopeless romantic, which is ironic since his parents are the least loving people I’ve ever met in my life. “Then why is she with him?”

“Maybe because she doesn’t know you’re an option.”

Like a moth to a flame, my eyes find her as she makes her way through the living room alone. I’m shocked her boyfriend isn’t with her. The guy never leaves her side, especially if he knows I’ll be there. She’s dressed in a sexy as hell red minidress that shows off all of her curves, with her chestnut hair down in long waves. Our gazes lock, and like it always does when I see her, my heart thumps against my rib cage. It’s been like this every time I’ve seen her since we met.

CHAPTER TWO

CAMDEN

THE PAST: SOPHOMORE YEAR

“Damn, Cam, this song is deep as fuck,” Braxton says. Using the neck of his guitar to prop himself up, he’s reading over the lyrics I just gave each guy a copy of. We just finished practicing our usual set list, and I figured I’d show them the song I finished writing last night.

“Thanks, man. I was thinking we could try it out, and if it works, we can play it Friday night at Ricky’s party.” Every few weeks, one of the kids at our school throws a kegger—whoever’s parents are out of town that weekend—and we use them as a way to practice in front of a crowd. Obviously, they don’t pay, but our classmates are assholes and have no problem telling us if something we play sucks.

“I’m down,” Gage says, walking over to the drums and having a seat.

“Let’s do it,” Declan agrees, picking up his bass guitar and getting into position.

We spend the next couple of hours in the studio, messing with the instrumentals and getting them to mesh with my words. We stop and start again damn near a hundred times until we get the sound we’re looking for—only stopping when my dad makes an appearance.

“New song?” he asks, knowing all of our songs.

“Yeah, what do you think?” I ask, holding my breath. Most kids my age don’t give a shit what their parents think, but most kids’ parents aren’t Easton Blackwood, president of Blackwood Records. With locations in New York and California and over five hundred artists and bands signed, it’s one of the most prominent record labels in the country. And I’m hoping after I graduate, my band will be one of them.
