Being arranged to marry a Highlander lord is hardly uncommon. But when he happens to be gorgeous, powerful, dominant, and your best friend’s dad? Well, that’s another story…
Lachlan McDougall is a lot of things: powerful, ruggedly handsome Highlander Lord, fierce ex-warrior, my soon-to-be-husband…
…And my best friend’s dad. I grew up in their castle, under his eye. But secretly, I’ve wanted him since before I even knew what the word meant. On the surface, I’m marrying him for political reasons: to stop a war and save his lands.
On the inside, though, binding myself to Lachlan McDougall is a fantasy I’ve dreamt a thousand times. I know this is wrong, and a sin. But once I lose myself in those dark, piercing eyes, and once I feel his big, powerful hands on me, and once I taste those beautiful lips?
…Well, it turns out, I might not be the only one with a forbidden little secret. In two days, I’ll be married to a man who I’ve married a hundred times, in my head. The man who’s taken me to bed ten times that number in my dreams.
Twice my age, a scandal waiting to happen, and my best friend’s father.
…I’m in so much trouble.
All the tropes, all the growly af alpha goodness, all the over-the-top fun, and of course, WILDLY historically inaccurate.Warning: not responsible for lost or ripped bodices. Reader beware.
As with all my books, this one is safe, with no cheating, and a HEA guaranteed.

The words hang like smoke in the darkness of his study, simmering down to linger on my skin like sweat. There’s a quickening in my chest, my heart skipping a beat as my pulse throbs through me.

I’m going to marry you.

The man sitting across the room from me is half in shadow, as am I, with the only light coming from the snapping, crackling fire spitting in the hearth. But even in pure darkness, I’d know his face. I’d know it because the man who’s just told me he’s marrying me—told me, not asked—isn’t just any man. No, this man is the one who’s been at the center of my thoughts for, well, longer than is appropriate. Though to be fair, none of the thoughts I’ve had about Lachlan McDougall have really ever been appropriate, regardless of how old I was.

And it hasn’t just been “thoughts.” “Thoughts” makes it sound so innocent, so frivolous. But the “thoughts” I’ve had about Lachlan have been anything but innocent.

…They’ve been downright sinful. Lewd, wicked, filthy thoughts. And dreams. And fantasies. For years.

In the flickering light of the fire, my blue eyes dart across his rough, hardened, chiseled, handsome face. It’s the face of a warrior. The face of a lord. The face of a man who’s seen the world and made it home with the demons on his back. My eyes flit to his, holding there for a second and getting lost in those dark browns before I lose my nerve and look away, my gaze dropping to his lips.

God, those lips.

They’re no better than looking into his eyes. Those lips do little to quell the fire blazing inside of me, the fire that’s been started by those five simple words.

I’m going to marry you.

His large hand reaches out, his tunic rolled to the elbows and his forearms rippling as he grips his flagon of wine and brings it to those very lips I’m staring at. He takes a sip and puts the cup back down, his tongue briefly flicking over those lips and sending a heated throb through my core.

…I think I’m in trouble.

Lachlan’s hand comes back up, his fingers raking across the silvered hair at his temple, cut short. He clears his throat, and I know his eyes are on mine, but I don’t trust myself to look back into them. Not with his words bringing to life every single wicked, sinful little fantasy I’ve ever had of him. Which, if I’m being honest, is a very large number.

In my fantasies, the fact that he’s more than twice my age doesn’t matter. That he’s my best friend’s father doesn’t matter. That he was once married—though it was annulled—to my horrible mother. At night, in the darkness, and when I’m alone with my wicked thoughts, none of it matters.

…Or perhaps all of it is why I’m drawn to him like a moth to flame. Maybe everything that’s wrong about desiring Lachlan McDougall is the very reason I crave him. Except fantasy is just that. It’s fantasy. It’s pretend. Fantasy is the line I couldn’t cross to actually be burned by that flame. Fantasy lets me live out every wicked desire without the scandal. Or without the repercussions. Or without the scorn of my best friend’s eye.

Except, suddenly, this isn’t fantasy anymore.

“W—what?”

The word croaks out of dry, parched lips, and I swallow, blushing at my awkward stumble over the simple word. Lachlan smiles thinly, pushing his flagon across the table towards me and nodding for me to take a drink. I do, quickly, drinking a heavy gulp that catches when I realize I’m drinking from his cup—the very cup those lips have tasted.

I sputter slightly, but I catch myself, putting the cup back down and swallowing.

“Would you like to try again?” he purrs, with a slight hint of mirth in his deep, thundering baritone.

I nod.

“What?”

Lachlan smiles, those white teeth flashing and that handsome jaw pulling back as I absolutely melt under it.

“I apologize for springing this on you,” he says gruffly. “But it couldn’t wait any longer. It’s Darcy, your mother.”

I make a face.

I’m sure it’s a sin to dislike the woman who brought you into the world as much as I dislike Darcy. But then, it’s probably up there with disliking the child you brought into the world as much as she clearly dislikes me. Honestly, when I was younger, I used to fantasize that she wasn’t my mother. That somewhere, in some far-off land, there was a kind, sweet, queen or princess of some kind who Darcy had kidnapped me from. Because there was no way a hateful, lying, conniving demon of a creature like Darcy could actually be my mother.

Except, sadly, the world isn’t always a fairytale. In fact, it rarely is. And the sad truth of it is that you can’t pick your parents. My father I never knew, and Darcy rarely if ever spoke of the late Lord Campbell. When she married Lachlan though, it was here that became home, with Lachlan’s daughter Catriona becoming the sister I never had. And Lachlan becoming the… well, he was the warmth I never knew.
Never kiss the devil. Not even if he’s sinfully gorgeous. Or impossible to resist. And certainly not when he’s got you tied and bound, and completely at his mercy. …Uh oh.
I thought I had it bad when I was on my way to be married off to some weasley little lord to appease my family. But that’s before I’m taken by the most fearsome, vicious, alpha Viking to sail the seas.
Tor Odinson is a beast of a man. A savage. A bloodthirsty warrior and ravager. Huge, growly, dominant…and completely and utterly beautiful. I’m supposed to fear him, not want him. I’m supposed to resist him, not crave him.
…Yeah, whoops. Because once he throws me over his shoulder, and lays his hands on me, and ties me to bed, and makes me feel things I’ve never even dreamed of, I know “what I’m supposed to do” is the last thing I’ll be doing when it comes to Tor.
I know it’s wrong to desire a man like him. But if this is a sin, I’m already damned. I fell for the devil, and now, I want it all.
Completely over the top, growly af, tropes for DAYS, and wildly historically inaccurate. As in, if you’re a history major, I’m so, so sorry. Warning: not responsible for lost or ripped bodices. Reader beware.
Ahead of us lies the rocky shore and the trees beyond it. My powerful, scarred hands grip the bow, a swell of excitement and hunger roaring through me. My blood blazes like fire through my veins, jaw clenching tight as my eyes pierce the shore. Being me, I can hear the men yelling—orders being barked and the clang of metal swords against shields.

This is the calm before the storm. This is the build-up before the explosive fury of battle. You can breathe the bloodlust on a Norseman’s ship in that moment before the prow hits land and we go jumping over the side to battle.

Except, today, there is no battle. There may be, if things don’t go as planned. But today isn’t about sacking a city, or pillaging a lord’s castle, though I know my men are hungry for it. No, today is about something else. Something more… personal.

Today, I’m taking her, and the rush I feel roaring through my veins at the thought of that is greater than any bloodlust. Greater than the promise of any plunder or prize. More satisfying than any glory or riches.

Today, after weeks of biding my time, and lusting, and craving, and obsessing to the point of madness, I’ll have my prize. I’ll have her in my hands, and once I do, she’ll be mine. I care not if she knows it yet. I care not that she’s currently on her way to be wed to some fancy, soft little prince of a lord. The type of man who trains with a wooden sword but who’s never felt the sting of steel against his shield. The sort of man who’s paid coin for others to fight for him. A man—nay, a boy—who sits back on his father’s riches and glorifies himself as a leader.

I detest a man like that.

But it isn’t hatred that drives me this day. It isn’t vengeance. In fact, it has nothing to do with the soft and pathetic little Lord Chauntleroy.

Nay, today, this is all about her.

My obsession. My claim. My conquest. My forever mate.

I groan, my hands tightening on the bow as my muscles clench and my teeth grind. Just the thought of her and knowing how close I am to having her in my grasp has my blood running hotter. It has my cock thickening to stone beneath my breeches—swelling big and hard, like it knows how close she is. I grunt, lust and adrenaline thundering through me as the boat crests a wave, the spray of sea water misting around me as my eyes blaze into the tree line.

Soon, my little Rhona. Soon.

It was weeks ago, during the wedding celebrations of Lord Hamish Ballentyne and his bride, Una, that I first laid eyes on my little bird. Dungow, Hamish’s cliff-side castle, was never going to be an easy take, but I’ve never been a man to settle for what’s easy. With risk comes glory, and Dungow castle holds the riches of centuries of wealthy lords. Dungow is also legendary for having never been breached, but the wedding was the perfect opportunity to slip some of my men in under disguise of guests or help.

But every battle, no matter how planned, can go either way. And when Lord Ballentyne’s men proved quicker to the defense than I anticipated, it was time to make an exit. After all, glory could be sought another day. With the call to retreat already sounded, I’d gone back into the castle during the fighting for one last search for treasure.

…What I’d found instead was worth more than all the gold and silver in the world. What I’d found instead was her.

Long auburn hair, wide, innocent blue doe-eyes. A button of a nose smattered with freckles. A fierceness in her gaze, even if I could see the fear there when I first stormed into the room to find her alone and unguarded. One look, and I was done. I knew it then, and I know it now. One look, and the battle around me fell away. One look and I was striding across the room, a growl in my throat and a hunger roaring through my veins.

We hadn’t spoken a word, but we didn’t have to. My hands slid around her waist and cupped her jaw. Her breath caught gasping on her lips, and those big blue eyes sparked with something so fierce and untamed as I drew her close, that I knew I was lost.

I kissed her. I tasted those lips. I swallowed her moans. There’d been the sound of what had to be half of Lord Ballentyne’s garrison charging down the hall, and I knew it was time for my exit. And then, just as quick as I’d found her, I left her—the taste of her lips lingering on mine. The memory of her little gasping moan hanging in my ears.
Marriage has never been in the plans for me. Not with my reputation for being “headstrong” and “disobedient”. That is, until Lord Callum Bruce barges into my world and scatters those plans all over the place.
But Lord Bruce is a brute of a man. A battle-hardened soldier and fierce, dominant Highland lord. Well, that and completely beautiful, which is so very, very unfair.

My breath lets out in a whooshing sound, and I let my shoulders drop. Sweat dampens the small of my back, and as I set that last bucket down, I push my long, honeyed blonde hair out of my face. A smile plays across my face as my eyes flick over the steaming hot surface of the big metal tub of water, and eagerly, I start to shed my dress.

Peace. At. Last.

For a life lived in my father’s castle, surrounded by servants, and maids, and cooks, and cleaners, and… well, people waiting on hand to do just about anything that would need doing, being alone for me is always a bit strange. But today, I can’t even describe how welcomed it is.

It’s also completely silent but for the birds outside and the highland winds blowing lazily through the big open windows of the tower—further insulation between me and the real world I’ve escaped here to get away from. My dress, slightly damp from the exertion of lugging close to thirty buckets of piping hot water up four flights of stairs, drops to the floor. My undergarments are next, and I blush, turning quickly to look around, even though I am quite alone.

Exactly how I wanted it when I decided to flee here.

“Here” is Aerie Doon Keep—a ramshackle, crumbling, leaning, and utterly adorable little outpost tower way up in the highlands. Aerie Doon was probably at some point a guard tower or lookout post of some kind. Somehow, it ended up belonging to my grandmother, Catherine—both my namesake and my favorite relative. And when she passed, apparently, she left the place to me. I’ve been using it as an escape and secret hiding place when I need to get away ever since. And today?

Well, if ever a day where a girl needed running away to a secret place where no one can find her, it’s today.

For a second, just before I step into the hot water of the bath, my mind flicks back to the conversation this morning over breakfast back at my father’s castle—the one where I was informed that a man had come forward with a request for my hand in marriage.

Now, men asking my father for my hand in marriage isn’t a new development. Neither is my father agreeing to one of them. Dad’s always weeded out the bad apples, of course, but that doesn’t mean a single one of them has stuck around after one conversation with me. So much so that I’ve developed a bit of a reputation.

…Apparently, I’m “headstrong” and “difficult.” Apparently, most highland lords looking for a bride want sweet and docile. Apparently, what they want in a bride is someone to smile pretty, speak only when spoken to, and to cow to their every whim. Someone to warm their bed, keep their opinions to themselves, and bear their heirs.

I know: how does a girl possibly say no to such a lovely offer?

I roll my eyes, stepping into the tub and shivering at the sizzling heat.

There have been nine requests for my hand in marriage that made it past my father’s high standards of men he’d allow to marry his only daughter. And every single one of them have lasted exactly one cup of tea and one meeting with me, if even that, before they rescinded their offer. And I was perfectly content to keep that record going, and to keep my reputation as an “outspoken girl” very much alive and well. That is, until today, when my father told me about offer number ten.

…And offer number ten is no ordinary offer.

You see, because the tenth man to ask for my hand in marriage is no ordinary man and no ordinary snooty highland lord. The tenth man to ask for my hand in marriage is hardened, and rough, and fierce. He’s huge, and muscled, and sculpted from years fighting in the wars in the Holy Land. He’s a soldier, and a warrior—a man gruff of voice, fierce of gaze, and imposing of size. A man who knows exactly what he wants, and a man who takes what he wants. So much so that I’m pretty certain that the tenth man who “asked” for my hand in marriage didn’t so much ask as tell.

His name is Callum Bruce, and unlike the other men who came looking to lock me down, we’ve met before.

…Oh, have we met.

My face burns as hot as the steamy water I’m standing in, and slowly, I lower myself into the scalding hot water as the fierce, wicked memories come flashing back. Sinful, filthy memories that send little bolts of lightning through my body to places they ought not to go.

A month ago, we were strangers. A month ago, at my best friend Una’s wedding to Lord Ballentyne, I’d only heard of Callum Bruce through reputation. Then we met. Then our eyes locked across a room, and I felt a fire inside of me I’d never felt before. Then I found it impossible to look away, or to stop my heart from racing.
Honestly, it’s just common sense: don’t ever, for any reason, fall in love with a pirate. No matter how tempting or toe-curlingly gorgeous he is. And especially not when he steals you from your own wedding…
One minute, I’m being married off to a horrible, cruel man to sweeten a family business arrangement. And the next? My wedding yacht is being stolen, with me on it, by the powerful, roguish Highlander, Lord Malcolm McAuley.
Former pirate. Ex-soldier. Full-time scoundrel. He also happens to be toe-curlingly gorgeous, sinfully tempting, and utterly irresistible.

…I don’t care.

I watch her walk along the shore towards the docks, and beyond that, the leisure yacht she’ll be married on, and my jaw clenches. My muscles tense, blood rushing through my veins as the anger simmers just under the surface. Her lily-white dress blows effortlessly in the sea breeze, whipping gently around her, swirling like mist.

Today is Ailith Pembrose’s wedding day. I’m not the groom, but if we’re being honest, that isn’t actually a concern of mine. Not as my eyes lock, not as my heart beats a little faster just watching her. Not when my cock swells thick as steel under my kilt.

No, I’m not the groom today, but that isn’t going to stop me. Her being betrothed to another doesn’t slow me as I start to walk, one foot in front of the other, ready to do what I know I must. I’d say I planned for this, but, that’s not true at all. I’m not a planner, just a man of action. And today, there will be action.

Today, Ailith will be mine.

When I first laid eyes on her those weeks before at my good friend Hamish’s wedding, it was like the world stopped moving for a moment. It was like a stillness came over me, my entire soul locking on to her as everything else faded to nothing. My finding her was like a storm cloud racing over the horizon. And today, I’m about to crash right into her shore.

I saw her. I wanted her. And I knew she’d be mine. I knew I’d launch a thousand ships for her. I knew I’d give up my titles, and my lands. I’d start a war. I’d go back to war in the Holy Lands—a place I swore I’d never go back to—for her. I knew I’d move Heaven and storm Hell for Ailith. And now, my mind has been made up, consequences be damned.

She belongs to another man, and I do. Not. Care. I wouldn’t care if her husband-to-be was the second coming Himself. I wouldn’t care if it was King Richard she was promised to, or a saint. Or the fiercest warrior to have ever lived.

None of them would stop me from claiming her.

But as it happens, Lord Carlson, her betrothed, is not the man for her, and I know she knows it too. Lord Carlson is a cruel, merciless, and vile man. I’m no prince, but I’m three times the man he is on a bad day. And like I said, it wouldn’t matter if she were marrying a King or a god.

…I’d still be taking her today.

I shouldn’t even be here today. I most certainly wasn’t invited. And this “plan” if you can even call my delusional spur-of-the-moment decision of action, is a plan that could get me killed. But I’ve faced far worse.

I know its reckless. I know it might even be wrong, even if Lord Carlson is a vile shell of a man. I know this could very well start a war.

And I. Do. Not. Care.

Because when it comes to Ailith Pembrose, nothing else matters. She will be mine. She’ll be my bride. She’ll be my everything, if I have to die trying.

But first, it’s time.

I move with purpose—jaw set, hands clenched to fists, and my eyes locked onto my prize as she boards the yacht along with her friends.

She belongs to another man?

My eyes narrow as the grim smile spreads over my face.

No, she doesn’t.

Not anymore. No, she’s been mine since the moment I laid eyes on her. And today—right now, actually—I’ll be taking what’s mine.

Chapter 2

Ailith

The boat sways gently under my feet, and I take a steady breath, calming my nerves. No, it’s not the ocean swell that has my nerves in knots.

“Well, you look gorgeous.”

I arch a brow at Catriona in the mirror we’re standing in front of. Around us, white flowers and garland are strung around the cabin suite of the yacht—my friends’ doing in an effort to make this day remotely pleasant for me, and a gesture I’m certainly thankful for, even if it doesn’t help much.

It’s like putting a ribbon on a pig, as my grandmother used to say. The flowers are lovely. The dress is gorgeous. And having my friends here is doing more to keep me from breaking down than I can even put into words.

…But it doesn’t change what’s happening here today.

I take another breath, trying to force a smile to my face as I look at myself in the mirror. I’ve swallowed this pill already, now it’s just time to go through with it.

No, my nerves aren’t just the normal “wedding jitters,” as my mother kept saying as she waved off my protests and concerns. It’s that I’m about to marry a troll of a man. Lord Carlson is a business associate of my fathers. Which is basically all the information anyone might need to guess how it is I came to be betrothed to him.
The first rule when you’re arranged to marry a gorgeous, dominant Highland lord? Don’t, under any circumstances, no matter how sinfully tempting he is, fall in love. ...Oops.
If I had it my way, I’d never get married. But then, it’s not up to me at all. Because the gruff, muscled, gorgeous and powerful Highlander Lord Hamish Ballentyne has decided to claim me as his bride.
I’m determined to resist him. He may be beautiful, and dangerously brooding, and carrying around the shadows of the wars he’s fought in. But I will not be some lord’s property, and I refuse to be “his”.
Except one look into those dark, piercing eyes? One forbidden, pulse-quickening, toe-curling touch from his rough, strong hands? I can refuse to belong to him all I want, but the thing is...
…I might already be his.
He speaks to me like no man ever has. He touches me in ways I’ve only dreamed feverishly of. And he promises to take what can only be taken once. And God help me, I’m ready to give it to him.
All the trope clichés. Lots of plaid. Wildly historically inaccurate. More alpha than you can shake a thistle at. Warning: not responsible for lost or ripped bodices. Reader beware.
As with all my books, this one is safe, with no cheating, and a HEA guaranteed.

I blink, pulling my gaze from the grey cliffs and crashing misty waves of the ocean outside the carriage window. Wetting my lips, the lingering images of my daydream still hanging around my head, I turn my eyes to Cat.

“Doing what?”

She fixes me with a look, a brow as honeyed as her hair arching.

“Una,” she sighs, giving me a half smile as she shakes her head.

“You were daydreaming again,” Ailith adds, also giving me a look.

I scowl, shrugging my shoulders as turn to look back out at the highlands rolling past us. The clopping of the horses and the creaking wood of the wheels mingle with the sounds of the men talking amongst themselves outside—our guards as we make our way towards Dungow Castle.

“And?”

Catriona snickers to herself. “Which was it, dreaming of today or thinking about running.”

I groan, pouting as I glance back at my friends.

“I’m sure you know.”

Cat grins, her hand coming back to squeeze my arm reassuringly. “It’ll be okay.”

“Oh, will it?” I bite back, my frown deepening as I glance back at the ocean. “Please, Cat, tell us when me marrying a man I don’t know, who I’ve never met, who’s ten years older than me and lives a day’s ride away from anyone I know will be ‘okay.’”

“A Lord.”

My eyes drag to Rhona, sitting across from me in the carriage next to Ailith twirling her fingers through her long, pretty auburn hair.

“What?” I grumble.

She smiles. “I just mean, even with all that, you are marrying a Lord, not just any man.”

My lips purse, my frown deepening as I glare at her. I know she’s trying to help. I know they’re all trying to help—after all, the four of us have been the best of friends since we were small children. But, trust me, it’s not helping.

Cat giggles. “Oh, but don’t you remember? Una doesn’t care about things like that. All she needs is her books and a quiet place to read them.”

Rhona shrugs. “Well, I’m sure Lord Ballentyne will be fine with her reading books.” She frowns. “Won’t he?”

I pout and turn back to the window, staring out at the wild ocean as the coastal air blows through my long fiery red hair. The same hair my mother was beside herself at when I came out for the carriage ride this morning with it down and wild, like I always wear it, instead of done up like she asked.

Maybe most girls would put a little effort into things like their hair when they’re on their way to meet the man they’ll be marrying, for the first time.

…Maybe if I wasn’t being forced into this, I’d do the same.

“Oh, yeah, if big important Lords are known for one thing, Rhona, it’s letting women read,” Ailith mutters sarcastically.

My scowl only deepens.

“Well, if Lord Ballentyne thinks he can stop me from reading,” I mutter. “He’s got much to learn.”

Cat snickers, leaning her head on my shoulder as we all bump with the wheels on the rough muddy road.

“I’ve heard he’s quite handsome,” she says with a shrug.

I smile wryly. “You have not. You’ve heard the same as me, that he’s scary and mean.” I sigh. “Arranged marriages are horrible.”

I wince, making a face as I look up at Ailith and then Rhona—both of whom are also betrothed to Lords they’ve never met

“Sorry.”

Rhona smiles the same wry smile back at me as she shrugs. “It is what it is.”

“Well your views will be beautiful, least?” Ailith puts up a brave smile as she nods out the window at the spectacular views of the sea. Rhona makes a face, shivering, and Ailith gives her an odd look.

“What, you don’t like the ocean?”

Rhona shakes her head. “It might be pretty, but the coasts are where the Vikings come.” She shivers again. “Father says they’re not even really men. More like beasts.”

Cat gives me a side-long look, rolling her eyes before turning back to our friend.

“Rhona, I am sure you remember the marauder Lord Entwyne captured after the raid last year. The one they paraded through the town naked as the day he was born on the way to the stocks?”

Rhona blushes furiously, shaking her head. Okay, all of us blush a little, remembering the scene we all snuck out to watch when we’d been forbidden to witness it.

Catriona smirks, wagging her brows. “I’m quite sure that was all man I saw swinging between his legs.”

The four of us blush even deeper before Cat sighs and shakes her head.

“Well anyways, I’d like to see my father try and foist me off to some Lord I don’t know.”

Ailith and Rhona and I share a look, quietly rolling our eyes. The fact that Lord McDougall, Catriona’s father, hasn’t set up a husband for her is a mystery. But we all know it’s just a matter of time. It’s always just a matter of time when it comes to daughters of lower Lords or chieftains.
