Her husband returns from war victorious… but something about him isn’t right.

Esme dreads her husband’s return. Married only six months, she has already learned to fear Lord Torrance of Clan Glencairn. Cold, calculating, and obsessed with producing an heir, he made it clear she had one duty—to bear his child. When she failed to do so quickly enough, his anger grew sharp, his temper cruel. If she could flee, she would—but there is nowhere he wouldn’t hunt her down. Torrance would never suffer such a humiliation. He would make her pay.

Now, word comes that he is returning home—victorious in battle against Clan MacLeish, their fierce rivalry at last silenced with the downfall of Chieftain Ryland. But with his return comes something far more unsettling than the threat of renewed cruelty. There is something different about him. Subtle shifts. Small things. A glance that lingers too long. A touch too unfamiliar. A man who looks like her husband… but isn’t quite the same.

Confused, uncertain, and curious, Esme begins to question everything. What truly happened on that battlefield? Did her husband walk away the victor—or did someone else take his place?

As whispers of betrayal stir and enemies draw near, Esme must face the the man she married may not be the man he claims to be. But in his arms, she finds a kind of safety she’s never known—and a passion she never dared to want.

When vengeance burns hot and love dares rise from its ashes, who will claim the final victory?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Asoft knock sounded at the door before it opened.

“Lord Torrance approaches, my lady.”

Esme leaned against the bedpost for support, her legs turning weak. She acknowledged the message with a bob of her head and the servant hurried off.

She feared her heart would pound out of her chest it beat so wildly. It had been so peaceful here without his presence, without the roar of his anger, or the pounding of his fists on a table, or the fear that he would demand her presence in his bedchamber and…

She pushed herself off the bedpost, warning herself that she had to remain strong, that she had no choice. He was her husband and nothing would change that, not even prayer, and she had prayed, but it had been a sinful and selfish prayer.

She had prayed for his death.

Dreadful fear robbed her legs of any strength left in them and she sunk down on the edge of the bed tears threatening her eyes.

Her husband had exceptionally fine features. At first glance, his handsome features captivated. His height stood a good head or two above others, and his fine body was sculpted to perfection. But it was only when one looked past all that that his true nature was revealed—evil.

She had seen it in the way his eyes would narrow, and his lips would curl ever so slightly in pleasure when he issued a punishment. He got enjoyment out of seeing someone suffer and even more pleasure in inflicting the suffering himself. Then there were his subtle threats dropped here and there or his hand that would strike fast for barely a reason.

Memory had her cringing, as if she could feel his hand grab a handful of her hair and yank it hard, stinging her scalp and for what? Because she hadn’t responded to him quickly enough or because she dared to take a step ahead of him, or she spoke too much or not enough. Any reason was good enough to raise his wrath and leave her trembling in fear.

When she received news that her husband would not return right after a victorious battle, she almost wept with relief. She could walk through the village, enjoying the last days of autumn that had already turned cold, speak with whoever she wished without seeking permission from her husband to do so. Smile. Laugh. Sleep. All without an ounce of fear.

She had even worn what garments she pleased, plain and comfortable, not the elaborate ones her husband insisted she wear and that she now wore to please him. Always to please him so as not to give him any reason to lash out at her.

Stay strong, a warning that had become like a prayer to her.

Her mum had told her that a woman’s lot in life was to remain strong no matter what fate dealt her since women had little say in decisions made for them.

Not so the peasants, Esme would argue with her.

Her mum would tell her that their lot was no better. Whether noble or peasant, life was difficult when little choice was left to you.

Esme didn’t want to believe that. She had entered the marriage with hope, believing kindness could make a difference. She learned fast that evil took pleasure in toying and tormenting kindness until it finally retreated and hid in the shadows.

The one thing she wished her mum had been more forthcoming about was the marriage bed. All she had told her was to submit to her husband. To lie there and let him have his way and it would be over soon enough. But that didn’t happen, and she didn’t know what she had done wrong. She closed her eyes, recalling the fearful moment. Her husband had grown so angry at her, she feared he might beat her to death. But it was his tongue that cut as sharp as a knife, and she felt its every slash.

His warning, “Fail me again and you would suffer greatly for it.”

A horn sounded and she spang off the bed. The sound was close, which meant her husband would arrive at any moment and he would bring fear and darkness with him.

She brushed at the few wrinkles on her heavily embroidered tunic, silently reprimanding herself for having sat. Torrance would notice and admonish her for being unkempt. She hurried her hand to her hair to make sure that not a single blonde strand had escaped her neatly plaited hair. She refused to even give thought to her features. Many thought her beautiful, while her husband believed he had gotten stuck with an ugly wife. He insisted that her eyes were too big and the color too blue. He reminded her repeatedly that her mouth was too small, that she barely had any lips, and her nose was too wide.

It was a simple mission… until it wasn’t.

Knox is a man of few words, and what little there is to tell, he keeps to himself. Sold to mercenaries at the age of eight, his life has been nothing but a cycle of relentless battles and endless training. Women have always been within his reach, drawn to his striking looks, yet none have ever truly held his interest. All he seeks is a small piece of land to live out his days in peace. It’s a simple dream, but one that feels impossible… until an unexpected proposal changes everything.

To earn the land he so desperately craves, Knox must find Lord Torrance’s elusive half-sister, Autumn, and bring her to him. The task seems straightforward enough for a seasoned warrior, and once it’s done, he’ll have a place to call home. But what starts as a simple mission quickly becomes much more complicated.

When his search leads him to Clan MacLeish, Knox seeks the help of Dru, a cunning thief with a reputation for knowing everyone’s secrets. Their paths cross in an unexpected—and rather inconvenient—situation, forcing Knox into a hasty marriage with the petite and sharp-witted woman. Desperate to be free of their union, Dru agrees to a bargain… help him find Autumn, and in return, Knox will release her from the marriage.

As they set out on their dangerous journey, it becomes clear they’re being hunted, with a deadly foe stalking their every move. Together, Knox’s strength and Dru’s indomitable spirit see them through the mounting dangers. But as Knox repeatedly saves Dru from her own bold decisions, they both realize that love has quietly bloomed between them.

When a shocking secret is finally revealed, it threatens their future together, posing a danger more perilous than they ever imagined.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Dru mumbled as she walked through the woods to the loch, mimicking Mother Abbess. “You know the rules, Dru. Wash the stink off you, every part of you or you cannot stay here.” She glanced at the offensive chunk of soap in her hand that would rob her of her only defense—the stink she wore as a shield.

No woman traveled alone through the Highlands. That she would meet with danger was guaranteed. Her situation had left her no choice and the only way she could stay safe while traveling was to smell foul enough so that no one would come near her. Of course, there were those occasions where some smelled worse than she did, but she had managed to avoid such situations thus far.

Winter brought its own difficulties with life on the road, and she was grateful to Chieftain Ryland of Clan MacLeish for allowing her to shelter with his clan throughout the winter. That was where she would be now with winter only a few weeks away, if a mercenary wasn’t searching for her.

Knox was his name, a sizeable man from what she heard, and he was on a mission for the vicious Lord Torrance of Clan Glencairn. Knox was to find Lord Torrance’s half-sister, Autumn. Rumors circulated about why Torrance wanted Autumn to be brought to him and none proved safe for the woman. Most speculated that she would either meet with an unfortunate accident or Torrance would arrange a marriage that would benefit him and could prove dangerous for Autumn. Knox intended to seek Dru’s help in finding Autumn since she picked up information living her life on the road that could not be easily found by most.

However, she had no desire to help Knox with his task. Lord Torrance was a dreadful man, and she wanted nothing to do with him. Because of that, her only recall for surviving the winter was to seek refuge at Cramond Abbey. The only reason Mother Abbess allowed her to stay now and again without any thought of her making it permanent and taking vows was because of the many favors she had done for the abbey. The strict rules and endless confinement weren’t to her liking, but there was much about life that wasn’t to her liking, and she had learned at an early age to adapt, when necessary, but to never surrender completely.

So, she would wash her sink away for now and outwait Knox. He had a mission to complete, and he couldn’t waste his time continuing to look for her. He would be on his way soon enough, and then she would return to Clan MacLeish to winter there.

She hurried the rest of the way to the loch, eager to be done with her task since the water would be cold. She placed the clean, brown novice robe on a low tree branch and gave a quick glance around to make sure no one lurked about. Then she hurried out of her garments and her worn boots and, gripping the soap, she rushed into the loch.

She gasped and shivered, the cold water rushing around her and she rushed to wash herself, her shivers growing worse. Once lathered, she submerged to quickly rinse herself off but found it difficult in shallow water so she ventured a bit deeper to hurry and see it done more easily. Her mum had taught her to swim at an early age, so she had no fear of drowning like most did.

The deeper water made it easier to get the soap out of her hair and she hurried to surface and leave the loch behind when she bumped into something hard. She gave whatever it was a good kick to swim away, but something locked onto her leg. She tried not to panic. Panic would do no good. She had to free herself or risk being pulled under and drowned. She reached for whatever it was that had caught her leg to rip it off only to discover it was a hand. The hand released her leg quickly but grabbed her wrist and yanked her hard. She smashed into a body that felt as hard as stone, then in the next second, she found herself tucked under an arm and lunged up out of the water.

Dru coughed and spattered and was surprised to hear a concerned voice ask, “Are you all right?”

She pushed soaking wet strands of her hair off her face to see a massive, muscled chest, the bottom half of him submerged, her eyes followed up to the most breath-catching male face she had ever seen, intense, dark brown eyes and his light brown hair streaked by the sun.

Her first thought was, Please don’t let it be him.

The need to get away from him, fearing it was Knox, the man she was trying to avoid, had her ordering, “Put me down!”

She tells herself to pay no heed to gossiping tongues but when she is alone at night she wonders if solitude will continue to be her only companion.

Quint arrives at her cottage one day with a wound that needs her skills. It is obvious that he is a seasoned warrior, various healed scars on his body attesting to it. His injury requires him to remain at her cottage for at least a few days and she finds she quite enjoys having him there. It does not take long for her to find what she never thought she would or for Quint to rediscover what he lost… love.

But Quint is harboring a secret, one that could possibly destroy the happiness both have finally found. When Shade receives a desperate message from her best friend at Clan MacLeish for help, she has no choice but to go. Quint refuses to let her make the journey alone and unprotected, and he refuses to lose her. So, they wed.

Surprise and shock fill Shade’s wedding day when she discovers Quint’s true identity. He is the ruthless warrior known as The Monk and he is on a mission of revenge. He will not rest until he slaughters everyone responsible, whoever they may be.

What Quint does not know is that Shade is one of those people.

Will revenge or love triumph in this battle?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Shade approached the slight rise wishing she had taken a different path home, but with the gray skies promising rain, she wanted to get home as quickly as possible. And this was the fastest way. It wasn’t that she feared taking this path. It was that it broke her heart every time she came this way and was reminded of the tragedy.

A slow gait would not help. It was better to hasten her pace and be done with it. Walk right past it, but as usual she couldn’t. As soon as the abbey came into view, she knew she could not avoid it, go past it as if it didn’t exist, or ignore the memories that rushed at her.

It was a small abbey and it had been shuttered for several years until about two years ago, when eight monks arrived and took residence. They had kept their distance from her, claiming she was no healer and suggesting she was possibly a witch because her healing skills came from the old ways of the Highlands. But one monk thought differently, Brother Emmett. He had come to her cottage and requested her help in identifying Highland plants and learning their properties. She was surprised and a bit skeptical, but she obliged him. Over time, they became friends and would meet in the woods, where she would teach him about the plants.

Shade stopped in front of the abbey, something she would not have considered doing if the monks were there. But no monks were in residence and the abbey was once again shuttered. The area folk wondered if any monks would ever occupy the abbey again after the tragedy that took place there. A tragedy that began with the arrival of a new monk.

Brother Emmett had confided in her about the man, not truly a monk, but more a man in need of help. She recalled him telling her that he was a troubled soul with much anger raging in him. He had been a fierce warrior whose wife had been murdered by renegades while he was away, called to battle. He hunted the men down and made them pay for what they had done to her. Unfortunately, his revenge brought him no peace and he joined the monks hoping to find it.

Regrettably, he only found more rage.

Shade walked over to the spot that marked the graves with wood crosses, eight in all.

It was said that one day the warrior monk returned from hunting to find every one of the monks slaughtered. However, most believe that the warrior monk suffered a fit of rage and killed every one of them. He buried the monks along with the help of some of the farmers in the area, never speaking a word as he did. He left after that with some saying he swore revenge against those who took the monks’ lives. While others said the fierce warrior in him emerged and his thirst for blood was too great to ignore and he returned to his old life. Whatever had happened, he now killed for coins, and you better have plenty of them if you wanted to hire The Monk.

Shade believed the tale had grown from its first telling and that the truth lay somewhere within it. Either way, she missed her friend Brother Emmett. He was a kind soul, and he honestly believed that there was a goodness to the man now known as The Monk. She liked to believe he was right.

Shade continued walking, recalling with fondness the times she had spent with Brother Emmett. He had been a man of at least thirty-odd years, shorter than her by a head and with one shoulder lower than the other due to an accident when he was young. He had told her that was why he was so interested in healing. He hoped to discover ways to heal such injuries and save others from endless suffering.

She had suggested that a broken bone that wasn’t set correctly was probably the reason for his shoulder not allowing the bone to heal properly, causing the droop to his shoulder. Brother Emmett was curious about her suggestion, and they often discussed broken bones and how they should be tended to. She missed her conversations with him and the times they spent together had provided something she lacked in her life, a bond of friendship. Her heart had ached when she heard of his death. He would have made an excellent healer, and she continued to miss him as she missed her best friend, Ula.

They had been friends since they were young. Ula had met and fallen in love with a fine man from Clan MacLeish and wed him. While she was happy for her friend, her heart had ached the day she had left to go begin her married life with her husband Caleb at Clan MacLeish. It was a full day’s ride there, which meant they would see little of each other. Though Shade had given her word that she would be there for Ula when she delivered her first bairn. That had been at least six moon cycles ago and she had yet to hear from her. And with tongues wagging about an imminent battle between Clan MacLeish and Clan Glencairn, she was worried about her friend.
