A promise is a promise, and Raven keeps hers, no matter the cost.
Five years ago, Raven of the Clan MacKinnon was forced to hide after the attack on her clan. She helped get her wounded father to safety, then watched helplessly as her two brothers were taken prisoner and marched off to serve the Beast, a heartless Northman determined to claim not only MacKinnon land but surrounding clan lands as well. What she witnessed that day shocked her. How she survived afterwards changed her forever.
Her brothers’ return home signals her own return home to her family and relative peace. Finally, the Beast has been appeased. Or so she thinks.
Wolf is an exceptional warrior, fearless, even ruthless when necessary. He intends to claim land that rightfully belongs to his family. All went according to plan until... how did one young lass escape a troop of warriors and ruin his well-executed plans? He searched five years for the MacKinnon lass without success, then she suddenly surfaces with a proposal for him that will end all strife and win him most of what he wants. She may think she is the victor, but he knows better. Or so he thinks.
Wolf accepts the proposal, signs the agreement, making the woman who caused him endless trouble... his wife.
Raven and Wolf face challenges, not only with each other, but with an old enemy seeking revenge, and unexpected secrets that reveal surprising truths and unforeseen danger.
Can foes become friends? Or will love decide for them?

Royden didn’t have to follow his brother’s glance to know who he asked about, but he did anyway. Their father stood on the top of the keep’s steps staring out beyond the village. Parlan was a sturdy built man for his four ten and six years. No gray touched his dark hair and the few lines and wrinkles age had graced him with hadn’t hampered his fine features. Yet he had chosen to pass the reins of the Clan MacKinnon to Royden, his eldest son. He had been reluctant to accept his da’s decree but had done so with pride and was now Chieftain of the Clan MacKinnon.

“A month now, I believe,” —Royden turned back to Arran— “ever since Brother Noble, informed your wife that he discovered our sister, Raven, was on her way home.”

“The leper could be wrong. It could be nothing more than useless gossip,” Arran said. “Brother Noble’s contagious illness doesn’t exactly win him friends nor does it make him a welcome guest anywhere but his home at Stitchill Monastery.”

“True enough, but one would think that living in such isolation, even when traveling, he hears and learns much. And you must admit all our efforts to find Raven have proven fruitless. Brother Noble’s news brought back the hope Da had lost of ever finding her.” He gave a quick nod at his da. “He doesn’t speak of it, but I know it weighs heavily on him that she, a young lass of ten and four years, saved his life. He should have been the one to keep her safe.”

“It was a task meant for the three of us,” Arran argued. “We all failed to keep the oath we swore and Raven suffered for it. And let’s not forget the suffering the brutal attack left on others.” Arran looked at the stump where his brother’s left hand had once been. “You lost your hand.”

Royden rubbed the leather-covered stump, needing no reminder. “We all lost, Arran, in one way or another. Fortunately, we’ve been reunited and you and I are happy, wed to women we love. We have even more to be grateful for with my wife due to give birth in the spring and your wife, following a few months later. Even Da has found love with Wren after being alone for too long. Life is good for all of us—except Raven.”

Arran looked away for a moment and Royden understood his brother fought to contain his anger. He did as well. It gnawed at him just as it did Arran and their da, that none of them had been able to protect Raven the day the clan had been attacked and now there was no way of knowing what she had gone through, what she might have suffered. And what she would be like when she returned home.

Arran drew in a deep breath as he turned his head to face his brother. “I fear for what the last five years on her own, hiding from our enemy, may have brought her.”

“I fear the same, but she will be well-loved and cared for here between the attention Oria and Wren will give her. And your wife will visit with her often.”

Arran nodded. “Purity and Raven had become fast friends all those years ago and had formed a strong bond. She will do all she can to make sure Raven does well.”

A strong gust of wind hit the two men and they turned their backs to it.

“Winter’s arrival is two weeks away, yet the biting cold in the air and overcast sky warns of possible snow. I fear the winter will be a cold one,” Royden said.

“I grew to hate the cold while with the mercenaries in the far north and beyond the North Sea,” Arran said, then smiled. “But I look forward to this winter, for I intend to hibernate in the keep with my wife and enjoy her warmth.”

“We should start that today with it being so bitter cold out.”

The two men turned and Arran’s smile grew when his wife, Purity, hurried to his side as he spread his cloak wide to welcome her in his arms. Her arms circled his waist and he tucked her snug against him and wrapped his cloak around them both.

Royden greeted his wife, Oria, in a similar manner. His one arm went around her waist while the other brought his hand to rest gently on her rounded stomach. She rested eagerly against him, but her worried expression had him asking, “What’s wrong? Aren’t you feeling well? Shall I get Wren?”

“I do well. It is your da who has me worried,” Oria said, looking to the keep steps where his da stood, his eyes scanning the distance while paying them no heed. “He waits day after day, and Wren says he hasn’t been sleeping.”
Once upon a time, Purity, of the Clan Macara, shy, plain, and with a deformed hand that everyone believes is the mark of the devil, begged handsome, charismatic, devil-may-care Arran of the Clan MacKinnon to wed her and save her from a fate she feared. He turned her down.
Five years later, Arran returns home after being taken captive by a group of mercenaries and forced to fight alongside them. He’s a far different man than he’d once been. Smiles elude him, his tongue no longer charms, and he knows what it’s like to have been touched by the devil himself. When he saves a woman in the woods from being abducted, he doesn’t realize who she is until he sees her deformed hand.
Purity has changed, confident and comfortable with herself and her life in the forest. She no longer requires a husband. Unfortunately, Purity is in danger, and Arran doesn’t intend to fail her this time. He tells her they will wed, and he will keep her safe.
It’s Purity’s turn to refuse his proposal—but not for long. It becomes clear that the only safety Purity has is in Arran’s arms as his wife.
When the couple return home, they face a challenging and dangerous situation that could tear them apart forever.
Secrets are discovered, promises are made, lies surface, and murder strikes the clan. Through it all, the couple fight to keep what they’ve found, what Purity always knew, and what Arran discovers—they’ve always been meant for each other.

“Stay, Princess,” she ordered the growling animal, struggling to free herself from Purity’s hold and defend her with her life. If it were one man, she would release her, but three had come upon them suddenly while she foraged in the woods and, though Princess was large, she was no match for the men with swords and bow and arrows. At least not until… “Wait for King,” she whispered to the dog.

Purity stood, keeping a growling Princess behind her. “What do you want?”

“You!” The largest of the three men, thick in the chest and arms—not so his legs—pointed at her. “You’ll fetch a decent price.”

The skinny man with the bow and arrow scrunched his brow as he turned to the large man. “But we already—”

“Haud yer wheesht, Quiver!” the big man ordered sharply.

Already… what? Purity wondered over the unfinished remark. What had Quiver meant to say that had the big man ordering him to hold his tongue? And what had brought the men so deep into the woods? This area saw few travelers.

With a sharp snap of his head, Quiver turned away from the man, mumbling beneath his breath.

“We need to rid ourselves of the dog, Reid,” the other man said, impatience stinging his words.

Fear continued to grow in Purity, prickling her skin. The thought of possibly losing Princess tore at her heart but also angered her and sparked her courage.

“I’ll not be going with you and I suggest you, eejits, leave before death takes hold of you,” Purity warned.

Quiver’s head appeared as if it swiveled on his shoulders as he looked around to see if death itself had materialized and was there waiting for them.

“Quiver’s the only idiot here,” the man said with a grin.

“You’re right about that, Owen,” Reid said with a laugh.

Purity hated that they took delight in what they intended. It meant they were an ignorant and heartless lot, unperturbed by others’ sufferings. Pleas and threats would make no difference to them. She knew well these type of men, having seen the destruction they could cause. They made one mistake, though, they had thought her easy prey since she was a woman alone.

“I won’t be going with you,” Purity informed them again, quite strongly this time.

Quiver was the only one who didn’t laugh. He was still too busy glancing around for death. The two fools might think him an idiot, but he had been wise enough not to dismiss her threat.

“You are more foolish than I thought. It will be easy to defeat you,” Purity said.

Reid and Owen laughed again, but Quiver stepped back away from the two.

“Quiver will take your dog down with one shot of his arrow,” Reid said.

Purity glared at the man. “Not before she tears your throat out.”

Reid’s hand went to his throat as if he could feel the dog’s fangs ripping into his flesh. “Quiver would get him first,” he argued.

Purity laughed. “I would think twice on that since I believe Quiver got his name for a reason.” She pointed at the man. “He quivers when frightened, not a good trait for a marksman.”

Reid and Owen didn’t even turn to look at Quiver, though the annoyed looks they exchanged proved Purity’s observation.

“Quiver will do what needs being done and there is still Owen and me. There is no way you can best us.”

Purity smiled with confidence. “Not on my own.”

“She has help,” Quiver said and took several anxious steps away from them, his eyes continuing to dart nervously around.

“Do not be a fool. She puts doubts in your head,” Reid snapped.

Quiver gasped. “She learned magic from that witch that once lived here. They say her magic still roams these woods and is the reason no one dares travel this way.”

“The man, Quiver, is wiser than he appears,” Purity said, seeing that Quiver appeared ready to flee, and hoping to encourage him, then that would leave only two men to contend with.

“Quiver is a fool who knows nothing and obeys orders,” Reid said with a curt tongue. “And I will argue with you no more. Quiver, see to the dog once we get hold of the woman.”

Purity was quick with her words, though they were not the truth. “The dog belongs to the witch. She will not take kindly to him being harmed.”

Quiver backed farther away.

“You’re useless,” Reid spat. “My wife—your sister—warned me not to take you with me. For once I should have listened to her.”

Purity thought King would have returned by now, though he’d been annoyed with her when he had walked off this morning. He could be temperamental and when irritated he’d go for a wander, ignoring Purity and Princess. However, her scream should have brought him here by now. A sudden catch to her chest had her fearing something had happened to him.
After being away, unwillingly, for five years, Royden MacKinnon returns home a far different man.
Royden doesn't know what he'll find. He knows his brother, Arran, is still alive, but what about his father, his sister, Raven, and most of all, what about the woman he loves... Oria.
The attack that had ripped his family apart, seen his land confiscated, and the woman he's loved since he's been young lost to him, came on the day he and Oria were to wed. He and Arran had been forced to serve a mercenary group until recently, when he was released and his clan and land returned to him. But why now? And what price was the cost of his freedom?
Oria is shocked to see the man she loves from as long as she can remember standing in front of her. She had hoped and prayed for this day, and it was finally here. But many things had happened in Royden's absence, things he needed to know and things she couldn't share with him, since honor bound her to promises she'd made.
Unfortunately, time and events change people, sometimes for the better, sometimes not so much. Royden and Oria aren't who they once were. Will their love transcend all else and survive? And will the evil that once tore them apart threaten them once again?
Author note… there is a Prequel, Highland Oath, to this book. It introduces all the characters and details what led to the Clan MacKinnon's separation. You don't have to read it to read this one, but you might find it interesting.
He couldn’t stop touching her. He wanted to caress and kiss every inch of her lovely naked body. She belonged to him and only him and that was the only thought that consumed him when he slid inside her and took what belonged to him.

Her virginity.

She was his and his alone, no other had the right. He had waited. They had waited for this moment and he relished it. Her sheath was snug, though it opened for him, welcoming him, accepting him, hugging him as he slipped deeper and deeper inside her.

“I love you, Royden—always.”

He cherished those words, held on to them, let them seep deep inside him as his manhood felt the tight barrier that blocked him—her maidenhead.

She was his to claim, always had been, and once he broke the barrier she’d be his always. They would be forever joined as one. Even when separated, they’d still remain connected through this special moment when they sealed their vows.

He looked into her eyes and fell more deeply in love if that was possible, her beautiful smile lighting his heart as she whispered, “Come to me. I’m yours.”

Royden woke with a start, jolting up in bed angry to wake from the dream he’d had often in the past five years. Five long years of thinking, dreaming, fighting to get home to Oria, the woman he’d loved since he’d been young and who had loved him—always.

He didn’t know if she had survived the attack on their wedding day that had torn not only them apart but his whole family, his whole clan. The last time he had seen her, she was helping women and children into the safety of the keep. Her fate was unknown to him and he ached to know what had happened to her. He had no idea if his da had died or survived. He and his brother, Arran, had spent about a year together before they’d been separated. He had no knowledge of what happened to him. And there was his sister, Raven, a handful of a lass. If anyone could survive, she could and he hoped she had since he had learned that she’d never been found.

From the moment he’d been captured, he and Arran had talked of escaping and returning home, finding their family and seeking revenge on whoever was responsible for the devastation to their clan. They’d been taken to the most barren part of Scotland where few men braved to go, the land desolate and unforgiving. At times they’d been transported on ships to fight on foreign soil, though they were always returned home to Scotland. They weren’t given a chance once dumped in a battle. It was fight or die.

He ran his right hand through his dark hair that barely touched his shoulders. He swung his legs off the edge of the rumpled bed and grabbed the black leather cuff off the low chest next to the bed. He slipped it on the stub of where his left hand should have been and used his teeth to help tighten the leather strips that kept it securely in place. It had taken time for him to get used to having only one hand and it hadn’t been easy. The day of the attack had been seared into his memory. How could he forget it? It was meant to be his wedding day.

He stood and reached for his shirt. He had grown thicker with muscle over the last few years, his chest and arms heavy with it and his legs as well. Muscle wasn’t the only thing he had gained. He’d also gained scars, some small ones and others large, from all the battles he’d been in. None, though, were as deep as the scar on his heart. It tormented him that he had failed not only to protect Oria, but to wed her, make her his wife, seal their union. That chance had passed him by and was no more.

Not that he didn’t dream or hope that by some miracle Oria had survived and when he was finally able to return home, she’d be there waiting for him.

He turned at the rustle of blankets and shook his head at the woman sleeping in his bed. He hated that after a while he couldn’t deny himself the pleasures of a willing woman. He had a need, especially after battle, and women were supplied to the men in abundance. He seldom paired with the same woman. There were no feelings when he coupled just a need that had to be satisfied. Still, his need troubled him and when he saw that some women had more need than he had known, he wondered, with him gone, what Oria might have done to assuage her need. Not that he would blame her. If anyone was to blame, it was he himself.
