Normally when you say, “I have a stalker,” you think bad thoughts. That wasn’t the kind of
stalker Folsom was when it came to Kobe Sano. Folsom liked to call herself a “guardian angel in
disguise.”

The first time he catches her attention, he’s been assigned to hunt her down and throw away the
key. All she did was steal someone else’s child. Well, embryo, that is. What Kobe doesn’t know,
though, is the man that hired him is up to no good, and she has no other choice but to run without
looking back.

From that moment on, she spends the rest of her spare time running away from him while also
digging into every nook and cranny of his personal life, finding every weakness he has and
utilizing it any way she needs to keep herself one step ahead of him.

Only one day, when she goes to do her usual snooping, she finds out that not only is her favorite
person in trouble, but he’s also in need of her help.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PART I

PROLOGUE

Yet, despite the look on my face, you’re still talking.

-Coffee Cup

FOLSOM

“I’m sorry. Can you repeat that?”

The life inside of me kicked, and I flinched.

Not because I hated the way it felt but because I’d come to love it.

And loving something that wasn’t yours…well, that was true torture.

“The baby in your uterus is genetically fifty percent yours,” the doctor repeated.

That was what I’d thought she said.

I looked over at my best friend and felt my stomach sink down to my knees.

“What is she talking about?” I asked, voice fragile sounding and so soft.

My “best friend” swallowed.

She looked nervous now.

“We found out that my eggs were incompatible with life,” she said. “I told you that.”

She had.

So, when the fourth contract came, I signed it, hoping for a miracle.

What I’d gotten was a whole shitstorm heading my way like a freight train on the warpath.

Four separate times, I’d been a willing womb for my best friend and her husband’s prospective baby. I’d had her egg fertilized with her husband’s sperm implanted in my body. I’d then taken care of myself for the last few years as I waited for one of those implants to take.

And I’d thought one had.

Only that “one” was actually not her one, but my one.

I was having my best friend’s husband’s baby.

“And you signed the contract,” Lisbeth explained.

I felt sick to my stomach. But not the same kind that I’d felt for the last six months.

The kind where I wasn’t sure what to do.

I’d spent my life trying to make up for shortcomings, and now, it looked like I was going to start paying for other people’s as well.

I licked my lips. “I didn’t give my permission.”

The doctor looked frantic all of a sudden. “What do you mean you didn’t give your permission? We have your signed contract!”

“I wasn’t aware that I was signing anything like that,” I said, shaking my head as I felt the bile start to creep its way up my throat. “When I signed, I was under the understanding that it was just like all the others.”

“But the egg retrieval…” He shook his head. “What did you think that was?”

I was already shaking my head. “All the shots and the pills…” I shook my head. “Sure, I should’ve paid more attention to all of that as you were doing it. But I thought that it was just one other thing that would help them get pregnant. Lisbeth explained that it was a procedure that would help ensure implantation. I never had any thought to question her on it. She was my best friend…why would I?”

That’s when her husband, Farrell, chimed in. “You’re not dumb, honey. You had to have realized that you were getting more than what you usually did.”

I glared at him.

I hated when he called me “honey.” It made me feel like a dumb girl.

I may be blonde, but I certainly wasn’t dumb.

“I don’t care what you say,” Lisbeth said. “We have the contract signed and sealed. You have no legal rights to this child any longer.”

I felt my stomach drop.

For some reason, I had a feeling she was right.

I’d signed away the rights to my child and hadn’t even realized it.

The urge to run hit me in the chest like a battering ram.

They had money, power and prestige.

I had nothing. I barely made rent, could hardly hold down a full-time job, and had never even met a lawyer, let alone had one on retainer.

Meanwhile, Farrell had so much family money that it was hard to see past the dollar signs on his expensive suits.

There was no way this would end well for me.

I’d have to watch the one person I thought was my friend raise my child and cut me out of their life.

I couldn’t do it.

I couldn’t and wouldn’t.

Resolve straightened my spine, and I got up. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m feeling rather sick to my stomach.”

“Don’t fight it, honey.” Farrell smirked as he watched me walk away. “It won’t end well for you.”

I gritted my teeth.

That motherfucker.

We’d see who it ended well for.

PROLOGUE II

My nice button is out of order. But my bite-me button is working just fine.

-Coffee Cup

KOBE

“You are no longer my son.”

Fourteen months ago, I’d committed murder for my sister. Well, at the time, I hadn’t realized that the “murder” in question wasn’t actually a “murder.”

What it was was a carnal fantasy she had. One where, in the dead of night, her house is broken into, and a man enters her home. Where he then forcefully rapes her.

At the time, I’d just been coming home from a job. It was unplanned by me and unexpected by her. When I entered my home, it was to find a man on top of my sister while she screamed “no” and “please stop.”

I hadn’t thought twice about ripping the man off of her naked body.
He had a way of pulling everyone into his darkness. Then, to make matters worse, he convinced you that you liked it there.
Kyle Davis—ex professional baseball player and current felon—loved Sara, his best friend. Strictly platonically, of course. He’d do absolutely anything for her, even put up with Greer, Sara’s other best friend.
What she was not was Kyle’s best friend. Or any friend at all, to be honest.
In fact, they couldn’t stand to be in the same room with each other, let alone breathe the same air for any length of time.
Then something happens, forcing the two of them to work together to keep Sara blissfully unaware of the danger Greer’s in.
They come up with a plan. Sara doesn’t need to know.
What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.
The funny thing is, Sara knows all. Sara also knows the two of them are destined to be with each other.
She only has to convince them of it first.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

This isn’t your typical story.

In fact, Sports Pro Lib rarely ever covers anything other than sports.

However, there is one particular story that’s taking the Major League Baseball world by storm.

Kyle Davis, first baseman for the Alabama Warthogs, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. After a legal battle from hell, it was determined Tuesday that Kyle Davis was guilty of the second-degree murder of another Major League Baseball player. That player being Martin Tibbs, second baseman for the Alabama Warthogs.

Last year, you could find the two men laughing it up in the dugout in between innings. This year, you’ll find Martin Tibbs in Mason Cemetery and Kyle Davis in a penitentiary.

What caused the friendship to go south?

Martin Tibbs was caught assaulting Kyle Davis’s sister. The two were set up by Davis himself.

Long story short, and gory details aside, Davis walked in on the act, and returned the favor by assaulting Martin Tibbs with an autographed bat by one of his idols, Jose Canseco.

Sadly, Kyle Davis learned that two wrongs don’t make a right.

The Warthogs dropped him, and now, the disgraced first baseman will spend the next however many years in prison thinking about what he did wrong.

More details to come.

Sports Pro Lib MEDIA Release

CHAPTER 1

Just in case you’re confused, God will never send you someone else’s wife.

-Davis to a subordinate.

DAVIS

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I asked my brother.

Years ago, when I’d gotten out of prison, my brother had taken it personally that I hadn’t moved back home. So, in typical Davis fashion, he followed me to Accident, Florida and got a job with the local sheriff’s office.

When I’d gone to prison, Finn had been a fresh-faced fifteen-year-old in the fast lane to be a professional baseball player. After my sister’s “accident,” and I say accident very fucking lightly, Finn had changed. He’d gone from sweet and innocent, and really good with his studies and his life in general, to mad at the fuckin’ world. Oh, and the caretaker of a woman that couldn’t take care of herself.

At first, that might’ve been because he was stuck taking care of our big sister after what I’d done. But, toward the end, it was because he’d finally seen the shit that this world had to offer.

Our big sister had been Finn’s legal guardian. Our best friend. Our confidant. And, even though she was my Irish twin, us being born thirteen months apart and barely any time separating us, she took care of me.

Then, all that had changed the moment that her date had decided that, after he’d raped her, he was going to force her not to tell anyone. That date being none other than a person that I’d set her up with, and I’d called a friend.

But that motherfucker had underestimated my sister’s will to live—she had to live and be there for us—and she’d survived. She’d lain in her house, on her floor, for fifteen hours as she waited for someone to come home.

Then, after practice, when we’d both walked in to “see” her, he’d acted surprised. Meanwhile, as I lay on the ground in a pool of her blood, whispering to her to hold on, she whispered the name of the man that was “freaking out” behind me.

The sad part was, I’d let the man into my house. Into my life. Into my fuckin’ heart.

I’d moved Finn and Carrie both in with me when I’d gone to the major leagues. They’d been my ride or die since before I could remember.

That’s why I’d reacted as I had when I found out that Martin Tibbs had betrayed me.

I hadn’t thought, just reacted.

And now I wasn’t a “professional baseball first baseman.” I was an “ex-con.”

Though it was getting better.

I now could say I was a professional bodyguard, too.

One that was so highly sought after that I had to hire a shit ton of people and couldn’t even do the bodyguard gig myself anymore. Not and keep the business running.

“You and your temper,” Finn teased, getting right to the point. “I feel like maybe you need to drink some alcohol. Want to do me and Sheriff Sunny a huge favor and volunteer for the drunk tank?”

“What’s that mean?” I asked.

“It means we serve you the best alcohol we can find, and some of the staff will do field sobriety tests on you as they pull you over. Though, this is all testing. It’s not going to be an actual traffic stop. We’re just going to see if everyone knows what they’re doing. Test out new products. That kind of thing.”

I wasn’t one to usually turn down free liquor.

But I felt like there was a catch.

“And why are you asking me?” I wondered out loud.

“One, because I never get to see you anymore. Two, because you never come home anymore, and I’ve had to work at the department and at home. Because you fired that overnight chick and never replaced her. Three, because I want to leave a good impression with my new boss. And you owe me.” He ticked off his fingers.

Just a word, yet one person came to mind.

Morrigan St. Pete.

The woman that’d been hounding my every step since the day she was born. From the moment we first comforted each other in the hospital, to the day that I left her to follow her dreams, I knew that she was my one.

Through marriage, divorce, and a prison sentence, I had low expectations when it came to her ever coming around to my way of life. What kind of woman wanted a man that’d been to prison, had a child that disliked him and everything he stood for, and had zero prospects in life?

But then she popped into my life again, and that feeling of suffocation slacked off for the first time since I let her go.
***
The first time I tried to come back to Aodhan, I found him married with a kid on the way.

The second time I tried, he was heading to jail.

As one would say, the third time is the charm, right? Wrong.

The third time, he was divorced, fresh from prison, had a kid, and was again with his ex-wife.

That was the final nail in my coffin. I decided to give up.

I would do anything and everything I could to avoid him. Hiding wasn’t beneath me.

I only wish he’d stuck with my plan, because the moment he sees me again, it’s like he’s seen the light. Avoiding him is impossible when he goes out of his way to insinuate himself into every aspect of my life.

If only life was as perfect as my dreams.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

If you have a beard, and no valentine, remember. You still have a beard.

-Text from Morrigan to Aodhan

AODHAN

The first time I met her, I didn’t remember.

My parents remembered, though.

That day, the worst thing that could ever happen happened to two different families. My mom and dad, Stella and Abram, were visiting friends and family the week before my mom was due to give birth. Then, while on the way, a car hit them and she went into labor.

Something happened, and during the birth, my twin brother perished before he’d even taken his first breath.

Fast-forward to me in the NICU. I hadn’t calmed down one single second since I was born.

I’d gone from a happy little world with my brother right beside me, to a totally different one with no one at my side. My parents were both in rough shape, banged up from the accident.

Meanwhile, I was all alone with no one close to hold me or comfort me but some overworked nurses.

In the cradle right beside mine, there was another baby that had lost her twin sister that very day. Though her mother hadn’t been in an accident like mine. Her mother had tried to kill herself and had only accomplished killing her twin sister.

Two overworked nurses had seen the two babies crying their little hearts out and noticed that no one was able to come and comfort either baby.

So one nurse chose to see if putting them together would calm them both down.

Well, it worked.

And from that moment on, I had a soul connection to a girl that would stay with me for the rest of my life.

Her name was Morrigan St. Pete.

PROLOGUE II

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Except for country girls. They’ll definitely kill you.

-Text from Aodhan to Morrigan

AODHAN

The first time I met her was in a hospital bed. The second time was eight years later in elementary school.

She’d stolen my lunch box because she thought it was hers, and had eaten half the sandwich before I’d corrected her and taken it back.

She’d shared her actual sandwich with me, since she’d eaten half of mine, and from that moment forward, we were inseparable.

For the next ten years, she was a constant for me.

She was my best friend, confidant, and ultimately the one and only person that I could count on forever.

The only problem was, she had a dream.

One that would lead her out of this small town, and into something big.

So the day we graduated college, we agreed that we would go our separate ways. And, if by the age of thirty, if we were still alone, we would make our way back to each other.

But life was funny. It never, ever worked out like we had planned.

CHAPTER 1

Without a beard, he’s your boyfriend. With a beard, he’s your man.

-Text from Morrigan to Folsom

MORRIGAN

The first time I tried to come back to find Aodhan, I found him married with a kid on the way.

The second time I saw him, he was heading to jail.

The third time I saw him, he was divorced, had a kid, and was again with his ex-wife.

Though, this time, I wasn’t sure if he was with her because he was trying to get back together with her, or because he was just meeting up to talk about their son.

Whatever the reason, they were doing it in my coffee shop, so it was okay that I was spying.

At least, that was what I’d told myself.

At first, I’d tried to sit in my office chair—where I found myself a lot on bad days—and not pay attention to the live feed on the screen of my computer.

A couple of years ago, when I’d moved home and used my inheritance money from my grandmother to open my own business, I’d been told that having cameras was a necessity for business owners.

That person was right, and from that point on, I’d always found myself monitoring the comings and goings of the front room when I had nowhere to go and nothing else to do.

That’d been what I was doing today, when he’d walked in.

He’d never been in my shop before.

In fact, I was fairly sure he didn’t even know I was back in town.

Mostly because, whenever I saw him, I went the other way. I did my damnedest to keep him in the past, where he belonged.

At least, that was what I told myself.

I watched him walk in, take a look around, then go up to the counter and order his drink.

I knew without being told that the drink he’d ordered was a hot chocolate, because Aodhan McBanks didn’t drink caffeine. Aodhan had an irregular heartbeat, and anything that exacerbated that for him wasn’t a good thing. Such as coffee.

Then, his ex-wife walked in the door, and she walked straight up to the counter and ordered.

My heart hitched at just how beautiful his ex-wife was. She had the most gorgeous hair, tanned skin, and longest legs a woman could ever have. If you could fit a supermodel into a normal person, that would be Danyetta Westfield McBanks.
The first time Cassius Ulysses Costas met Alice Paradis, she was in a string bikini and filling up a long line of boats that were there just to see her. She was eighteen and every man’s wet dream.
Even his.
For the longest time, he went out of his way to stay as far away from her as he could get without actually taking his eyes off of her. For years, he was the better person. He played his hand close, and not a single person would know just how obsessed he was with her.
Then he goes to prison and comes out a man that couldn’t care less about anyone or anything, least of all what someone thought of him and his actions. But not one second while he was behind bars did he forget about Alice.
He tries to stay away. For a few long months, he fights his every instinct to make her his. But, as if the universe is conspiring against him, Alice is thrown into his path time after time, instance after instance.
And his resolve is waning. Fast.
In one last ditch effort to stay away, he walks away, hoping making her mad enough will force her to do the work for him.
However, when Alice is attacked, it isn’t Cassius’s harsh words she remembers, but the way he makes her feel safe.
Soon, the very last thing he’ll do is let her walk away. He did the right thing, and that didn’t work out. Now, it’s time for him to embrace the wrong.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

The blinker isn’t there for decoration. It’s to communicate with other drivers because we can’t read your fucking mind.

-Cassius’s secret thoughts

CASSIUS

The first time I met her, she was all of eighteen, in a string bikini, and pumping gas into the boat I was about to pilot out of the channel.

She was leaning over the boat and was pouring gas stabilizer into the stream right along with the gas.

She had a fantastic ass and an even better set of tits.

The shortest pair of short shorts covered her bathing suit bottoms—barely—that I’d ever had the pleasure to see.

I, Cassius Ulysses Costas, a thirty-year-old man, was perving on an eighteen-year-old.

If she was even that.

Last week when I’d been here, she’d been celebrating a birthday. She’d had the cute little hat on top of her cute little head. She had streamers decorating her workspace. There were fuckin’ cupcakes, for Christ’s sake.

Damn good cupcakes.

From what I’d been told during my lurking, Alice had baked them herself.

Her family owned not only the small marina where we were at today but also the larger one where they fueled up the big ships—the ones I normally piloted.

However, if I was in need of a break, I’d take the smaller ships in and out instead of the bigger ones. Mostly because, if you were off your game, you sank ships—literally. So if I wasn’t where I needed to be to pilot multi-million-dollar vessels, then I took a break and did the fun ones.

Such as today.

I’d already taken out two yachts, worth half a million a piece, and I’d already brought in four fishing charters—and gotten two tunas to show for it.

“Hey, you okay?”

I hadn’t realized that my stillness had been noticed.

Luckily not by the object of my desire.

But, sadly, it was almost just as bad.

“Fine,” I said to Jaycee, Alice’s twin sister. “How about you?”

Jaycee was almost the exact opposite of Alice.

Where Alice was sweet, bubbly, and willing to do anything to please anyone, Jaycee wasn’t. Jaycee was rude, selfish, and had the voice of a high-pitched dog toy that you couldn’t help but hate listening to.

Like those toys that you got kids for Christmas and immediately took the batteries out of to save your sanity.

She was that kind of annoying.

“I see you’re doing the fun stuff today.” Jaycee continued to talk to me, unaware of how much her voice annoyed me.

“Yep,” I said as I took a pull on my water bottle. “You delivering pizza today?”

Not only did her family own a marina, but they also owned a successful chain of pizzerias. Silvain’s Pizza, a local hot spot, was the best of the best. The family all took turns delivering pizza if they were needed. Including Alice.

Though, I hadn’t seen Jaycee do it willingly in a long time. She was a vapid, selfish girl that only saw the dollar signs and not the hard work it took to get those dollar signs.

And her family mostly humored her. Giving her the money, without making her work, unless they were just so super busy that she was forced to.

But, with her working, came her messing up. And the family saw her getting a paycheck but not working as the better of two evils. At least, that’d been what I’d gathered from their family. Their brother was very vocal about how awful a worker Jaycee was, and how they’d love it if she just never came in and fucked up.

Truthfully, I wasn’t really sure why she was here today.

She’d been sitting at the dock bar area with a drink in her hand while Alice filled up every single customer that was in line. Had Jaycee gotten off her ass and helped, Oberon’s goddamn yacht would be filled up and we could get him the fuck out to sea and I could go back home.

He was my last of the day—even though it was only eleven in the morning.

I’d been going since late last night and could use a fuckin’ break.

Though, my mother had begged and pleaded with me to meet her boyfriend, Oberon, for ‘brunch’ at the North Shore Bay, where Silvain’s Pizzeria was located.

Oberon Kalb. My mother’s newest man.

My mom wasn’t a person that did well when she was left alone for long. She thrived with someone taking care of her, and the yacht captain, Oberon, was able to do that to her liking most of the time.

My mom wasn’t a bad person. Honestly, she was great. Though a little shallow at times, Crista Pritchard was sweet as honey and never missed laughing at a good joke. What she failed to do was take care of herself.

If she didn’t have a man, she was lost.

Hence the reason I was currently on the patio waiting for the douche’s yacht to get fueled up, eating pizza, when what I really wanted was to go to bed.

Etienne LaFayette hits the ground running the moment he breathes free air after being paroled from a maximum-security prison in Texas.

He claws his life back from his brother-in-law who’d taken over his business during the years he’d spent as an inmate at Huntsville Penitentiary. Though it is hard, he puts his life back together in Accident, Florida.

There, he hires new employees, joins a motorcycle club, and becomes wildly successful overnight.

Seems like the perfect life, right?

Wrong.

Because one of his first clients is a beautiful, curly-haired woman that reels him in from the moment he first lays eyes on her. Only, before he can work his charm, she forms an opinion of him based solely on the person that he chose to work at his side, day in and day out. That opinion? Utter disgust.

***

Matilda Deveraux has been dealt blow after blow her entire life.

First with the death of her mom. Then living with a stepfamily that despises her.

Her entire life she’s been known as different. The “weird girl that creeps everyone out.”

It’s not her fault that she’s different, yet everyone, including Etienne’s assistant, treats her like she’s a menace to society.
Like she would be better off in a loony bin than gracing the streets of Accident, Florida.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Silent but smiling. You might want to run.

-Facts of life

ETIENNE

“Hello?” Jenna, more affectionately known as Genocide to the rest of my family, including me, grumbled into the phone.

I grinned.

Deep down—and I mean as far down as you could possibly get—Jenna was a good person. You just had to get past the hard, steel-infused, nearly impossible-to-penetrate outer shell.

“I’m out.”

Jenna paused. “That’s the only reason I answered the phone. I heard that was a possibility.”

That was true. Jenna wasn’t going to spend money to ever answer a collect call from the prison. I was lucky she even answered this call, not knowing who was calling.

“You just didn’t know that it was me,” I said in a sugary sweet voice, allowing my Cajun French accent to thicken to almost unintelligible in a way that I knew she would hate.

Jenna and I were from Cajun country. We were born and raised in a white antebellum home on one of the largest plantations in the southern continental United States.

“Don’t speak like that,” she hissed.

I grinned at the wide-open road that I was currently walking down.

I’d gotten out yesterday and had started walking. There was no way in hell that I was staying in that place any longer than I had to.

Why I’d gotten out early, I had no clue. But I would fuckin’ take it.

Even better, I would be a good little boy and no longer do bad stuff—even if it was to a bad person—just so I could make sure that I never had to go back there again.

Well, that was kind of a lie.

If what had happened to send me there happened again, well, there would be no way in hell that I would be controlling my anger.

There was only so much a man could handle.

“I’m guessing you think that I’ll come pick you up.”

I would’ve laughed, but I knew it would only piss her off.

A lot of things pissed my sister off.

My laugh. My accent. My face. My existence.

“No,” I snorted as I heard a car approaching. “I can get home on my own.”

I’d already started on the way to my destination.

I’d hitchhiked.

Sure, people say that it’s dangerous, but for a six-foot-four, two-hundred-sixty-pound man? It wasn’t all that dangerous.

“Good,” she sounded annoyed that I’d interrupted her. “Then why are you calling?”

That was my sister.

“Just telling you so you can tell your husband,” I warned. “I’ll be home soon to check everything over with Jeffrey. I’m giving him time to get his shit in a row. Then I’ll be relieving him of duty.”

There was a long, silent pause. Then I felt my sister’s demeanor crack.

“You’re shitting me.”

“I’m not,” I said. “I told you that I was going to get out and fire his ass.”

“You did,” she confirmed. “But I didn’t believe you.”

“Well believe it,” I grumbled. “Just tell him I’m out. That’ll light a fire under his ass.”

“I’ll do that,” she said. “Is this your new number?”

“For now,” I said. “I have to get a new debit card, and then I might buy a better one.”

I had to get a lot of new things. A new ID, because mine was expired. A new cell phone. Debit card. Clothes.

The pants I was currently painted into no longer fit. As in, they were so damn tight that I worried for the integrity of the seams with each step that I took.

But that was all I had when I got out, and with a small amount of cash, paired with not having anyone’s number but Jenna’s to call… I was screwed.

The first guy that I’d hitchhiked with dropped me off at a Walmart not far from where he’d picked me up. I’d gotten a cell phone by the checkout counter, a bag of Swedish Fish, and a new shirt that wasn’t skintight. Though, the new one wasn’t much better. There was only so much to choose from at a local neighborhood Walmart, the cashier who’d checked me out told me.

With the remaining thirty dollars in my pocket, I’d caught a ride from a trucker to the county line of my destination—Accident, Florida. Which led me to now, walking down a two-lane road, with the smell of salty water getting closer and closer the more steps I took in the town’s direction.

The smell of the water, no matter that it was in a different state, brought back memories of home.

In New Orleans, where we’d spent our childhood in the bayous and the Pontchartrain, we’d run wild through the Gulf of Mexico. Hell, at one point in time, I’d head to all three all in one day.

So hell yes, just the smell of the salt brine in the air was enough to soothe something in my soul I hadn’t realized I was missing.

Tomorrow, or as soon as I could arrange it, I would get my company back—once I had wheels and an ID preferably—and everything would be golden.
Bain met Diana, a.k.a. Luce, the night before he was set to deploy to Afghanistan.

It’s not every day that you take your brother’s girlfriend to prom because he refuses to put out the effort.

That night was one of the best nights of his life and the next day, he leaves and doesn’t see her again.

But there are letters. Not many, but enough for them to form a connection.

Over the two-year deployment, they became great friends.

The best of friends—at least, as good of friends as you can be when it’s your brother’s wife.

Fast-forward six years and she still counts him as one of her greatest friends. Even going as far as to stick by him when he’s sent to prison because his own brother turned on him.

Luce had a crush on her then-boyfriend’s brother since way before she and Bain’s brother were married. From the moment he volunteered to take her to prom, she’d fallen.

Over the years, she’d tried to hide it. Tried to go on with her life and act like she loved her husband and only her husband. But as time went on and Braxton started to treat her more and more like crap, she realized the truth. Her husband wasn’t Bain. Her husband would never be him.

Hell, that’d been proven time and time again.

The smoking gun, though? The thing that made her realize it was time to leave?

When her husband stood by while she was assaulted, while the man she tried to act like was just a friend protected her. Then was sentenced to eight years in jail for it.

It was time to admit the truth.

Bain McDempsey was it for her. She just had to help him see it. Oh, and get him out of prison first.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Marry the man that makes your heart happy. Not the man that makes your brain understand.

-Luce’s secret thoughts

BAIN

I sat back in my chair and grinned.

Today was the last day that I would be home for a while and it definitely was nothing less than comical.

Why?

Because my brother, who was two years younger than me, was a complete dumbass.

Why was he a dumbass?

Because he didn’t want to go to prom.

Actually, he’d done one better than that.

He’d asked his current girlfriend to prom, she’d said yes and the day that it was supposed to happen—i.e., fuckin’ today—he’d backed out and said he wasn’t interested in going anymore.

Which led us to now.

His girlfriend, the Lucille Ball lookalike, was standing in our kitchen, dressed to the nines. Meanwhile, Braxton had his arms crossed over his chest and he was still dressed in his workout clothes from earlier.

They were supposed to leave an hour ago, yet, there he was, still refusing to go even though I could tell it meant a lot to her.

“Please, Braxton. I really want to go,” the girl pleaded.

I still didn’t know her name.

Braxton hadn’t mentioned her in the entire week that I’d been home, which was telling.

Braxton was a complete and utter dick at the best of times. He may be my brother, but he definitely wasn’t my favorite person in the world. And the reason why was currently staring me in the face.

“Just go,” I suggested. “You’ll only get to do prom once. It’s your senior year.”

Braxton lifted a lip at me in disgust. “If I wanted your input, soldier, I would’ve asked for it.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m Navy. I’m not a soldier.”

Braxton knew that. I’d corrected him about eight thousand times this week. Yet, he’d found a new way to insult me, so he did it every second that he could.

My brother, the asshole.

“Boys,” my mother said. “Let’s not start this again. We’ve been playing this game all week. Now, Braxton, go get dressed. You made a commitment, you’ll follow through.”

I snorted.

Which pissed my brother off to the point where he was coming off his lean against the counter and about to head toward me.

“No.” My dad intercepted him before he could take even a step toward me. “Go get dressed.”

“I’m not going,” Braxton denied. “You can’t make me. I’m eighteen.”

“I can’t make you, no,” Dad agreed. “But I can make you pay me back for that tux that you made me rent you. Or the stupid Hummer you begged and pleaded for when you told me it would be the perfect vehicle to take your date to prom in.”

My dad was a pushover. A pushover that had a lot of money to spare.

He worked as an engineer at a chemical plant. Meanwhile, my mother worked as an engineer at the competing chemical plant in the next county.

Between the two of them, they were plenty rich enough to buy us everything we wanted.

One child—me—didn’t want them to pay for anything. I went out of my way to pay my own way.

Meanwhile, Braxton was still on the tit. He would milk my family of everything and anything that he could. He would do anything to make that happen as long as he didn’t have to work.

He was the proverbial spoiled rotten kid.

God, sometimes I hated him.

“I’ll take her,” I said out of the blue.

My mother and father both looked at me. Braxton looked at me. Braxton’s nondate looked at me.

For the last hour, the girl had been standing in our kitchen bitching at Braxton all because he wouldn’t take her to prom.

Not that I really wanted to go myself when I was their age, but I definitely went. Because that was just one of those things you did in high school. You went to prom. It was a core memory.

“What will you wear?” she asked carefully, considering it.

I could see the wheels turning in her head. She definitely wasn’t opposed.

I could also see the excitement. She really wanted to go, and she didn’t have to go with her boyfriend to be happy.

Plus, I could see that it was pissing Braxton off that I offered to go with her.

“I have my Navy dress uniform.” I grinned.

“Dee…” Braxton started, hesitant now.

“Sweet.” She clapped giddily. “Let’s go!”

“Diana.” Braxton snapped.

Diana looked at him, dismissed him, then looked at my parents. “Thank you for being patient with me.”

“Go get that uniform on,” my mom teased.

Dress whites for the win.

“Awesome.” Her eyes lit. “When can you be ready?”

I looked at my watch. “Five minutes?”

I’d already shaved. My hair was trimmed. My body was ready for bed—since that’d been where I’d been headed before the beautiful girl had walked in.

“Sweet. I’ll wait outside,” she said, tossing Braxton a dismissive glare before she walked right out the door.

I took the stairs two at a time and was ready in two minutes, not five.
The problem with Wake was that he was understandable. He was the type of villain that literally scared the absolute shit out of you because you knew that under the right circumstances, you could end up exactly like him.

Which, sadly, was the case for me.

I’d done the exact same thing as Wake, and now I was a murderer just like him.

Did I know that I did wrong? Hell yes.

Did I regret that? Hell no.

Did I plan on changing a thing? Also, no.

Was I falling in love with a man that should scare the shit out of me? A resounding hell yes.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

I just overheard a girl order a margarita after being told they didn’t have Diet Cokes.

-Dutch to Tomas

DUTCH

“Hello, Lois,” I said to the small girl.

Lois didn’t smile. She never did.

Lois’s mother, Tamra, looked at me hesitantly.

Last week, we’d spoken about Lois having a session with me without her present, to see if Lois would interact with me. It was a last-ditch effort to get her to open up.

This morning, through a phone call with Tamra before my practice had opened, we’d talked about her being able to watch Lois through the surveillance system that I had in my personal office.

And she’d agreed.

But I could tell that she was still struggling. She didn’t want to leave Lois alone, because Lois freaked out when her mother strayed too far from her sight. When she’d first started coming here, it was because Lois started to throw a fit each time Lois’s father would come near her.

And, against her husband’s wishes, she’d started bringing Lois to my office in hopes that I could help get the six-year-old talking.

I just had to get her to open up. To do that, I was hoping that her mother being gone might get her to do that.

“If you need me, you know where I am, right?” Tamra said to Lois.

Lois looked up, obviously having heard her mother’s promise before they’d entered my office, and nodded her head carefully.

Tamra closed the door quietly, and Lois looked at me expectantly.

“That’s one of my most favorite books in the world,” I said about the book, Goodnight Moon.

“Why?” Lois asked.

“I have no clue,” I admitted. “I just really used to like all the colors. Green is my favorite color in the world. Like the color of a frog. And your eyes.”

“I have hazel eyes,” she corrected me. “Mommy said so.”

“You do,” I confirmed. “Hazel just means that your eyes change colors. Today, for instance, your eyes are green. Last week when you came in, your eyes were more gray. They matched your shirt.”

She looked down at her dark blue shirt, then up at me. “Yeah.”

“Would you like to talk about your new school today?” I asked. “Your mommy said that you went this week. How was that?”

She surprised me by actually answering. “There are no boys there. I like it.”

My brows rose nearly to my hairline. I quickly hid my surprise, though.

Instead, I focused on her and what she was saying. “You didn’t like going to school with boys?”

“No,” she said softly. “This school, there are only girls. Period. Even the teachers are girls.”

My heart started pumping so hard I could practically hear the whoosh in my ears.

“You don’t like being around boys?” I repeated my question.

“No,” she whispered. “Boys become bigger boys. Daddies.”

I felt my stomach sink. “Your daddy isn’t bad, is he?”

She looked into my eyes, then said three words. “He’s the worst.”

Three hours later, I waved to the police officer. The last one in my office.

Detective Ramirez.

He was watching me with his all-knowing cop eyes.

“We will handle this,” he assured me.

He might try.

But I had a feeling that it wouldn’t matter.

Not when Lois’s father was so high up in the government. He had friends in very high places, and I could read the indecision on the detectives’ faces that this was about to get ugly. That things weren’t going to go how I wanted them to.

And I was right.

Three weeks to the day that Lois had told me that her father had touched her—hurt her in the worst way possible—Detective Ramirez came by to tell me the bad news. Lois’s father, Tony Haskins, would not be facing charges for the molestation of his daughter.

Even worse, something tragic had happened to Lois. She’d had a near drowning accident in the family’s pool, and they feared that her brain was dead.

I knew the truth, though.

I knew, and I would be doing what I needed to do to get that baby justice.

Even if I had to see the inside of a jail cell in order to do it.

CHAPTER 2

There is no murder. Just happy little accidents.

-Dutch’s secret thoughts

DUTCH

Accident, Florida resident, Wake Westfield, a graduate of West Point and an honorably discharged retired Army Officer, was charged with fourteen counts of first-degree murder. Shocking the world, the judge and jury felt that the maximum penalty for life without parole was too harsh a punishment. Afterall, murdering fourteen pedophiles, one of which was guilty of hurting your daughter, is understandably acceptable.
