Getting out was hard. Knowing who to trust was easy: my dad’s best friend. He’s the only man I’ve ever been able to count on...but will we be able to keep our hands off each other?

Sierra

I needed a guardian to protect me so I went to the only man I know I can trust—my dad’s best friend, Colt Winters. He’s a retired Army Ranger turned grumpy cowboy. He’s a man of courage and honor. He’ll protect me with his life.

But while he’s busy rescuing me, I have to remember rule #1: protect my heart. Because falling for this grumpy cowboy who ignites my body would be all too easy.

Colt

I was looking forward to a peaceful life after my retirement from the Rangers. I didn’t need Sierra showing up with her sunshine smile and her tempting innocence. She’s my best friend’s daughter and I’ve sworn to protect her.

But now she’s at my ranch, staying under my roof, and sparking fantasies I definitely shouldn’t be having about the innocent college student. All I have to do is keep my hands to myself while I neutralize the threat against her. Because falling for this sweet curvy woman who has captured my heart would be all too easy.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

SIERRA

I’ve been listening to a symphony of snores for the past hour. It sounds like the sleeping pill in my stepdad’s food finally took effect. The only problem is now I have to get away without rousing him.

My hands shake as I carefully pick the lock he installed on my door. He said there were motion detectors in the hallway, but I don’t think he was telling the truth. Because when he let me out last night for gym class, I listened carefully and didn’t hear anything clicking off. Please don’t let me be wrong.

I never expected my life to turn out like this, to become a prisoner in my own home at nineteen. If I don’t leave soon, a worse fate than being my stepdad’s live-in cook and maid is waiting for me. One that sends a shudder down my spine and fills my throat with bile.

I don’t have a lot of options or even any friends that I can reach out to for help. Albert has kept me too isolated to allow me much contact with the outside world. But there’s one man that I can count on. My dad’s best friend, Colt Winters.

Just thinking his name has me touching the black onyx necklace that I always wear. He gave it to me after my dad’s funeral. He said it would protect me from evil and bring healing.

Now, Colt sends my stepdad a check every month and even though the funds are meant to help with my living costs, I never see a dime of that money. But I have seen the checks which means I’ve had the chance to memorize Colt’s address. He lives in a little bitty town in North Carolina. An area called Courage County. I hope it’s the kind of place where I can get help and finally live free. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, terrified that my stepfather will show up at any moment.

But first, I have to find my way to him and that means, testing out my motion sensor theory. Taking a water bottle, I roll it across the carpeted hallway floor that’s stained from beer spills and littered with cigarette butts. No matter how many times I clean up the place, Albert always has his disgusting friends over.

I hold my breath as the water bottle moves. Albert has been keeping me on a steady diet of old carrot sticks and water. It’s another part of his plan to make Sierra skinny because apparently a skinny girl will be worth more to the right buyer. I almost threw up when he told me that.

I listen for a long moment and there are no sirens or alerts. Albert doesn’t stop snoring. He doesn’t so much as stir, and I send up a silent prayer of thanks that my mom left the sleeping pills behind when she ducked out of here eight years ago. I mean, she also left me so she’s not winning any awards for parenting.

Stealthily, I move down the thirteen steps, careful to avoid the one that squeaks. The entire time, the hair on the back of my neck is standing up and I’m fighting not to hyperventilate. Stay calm. You’re almost there.

If Albert catches me trying to leave, he might move up the timetable. He might sell me off to any bidder instead of waiting for a rich one. The thought has my skin crawling as I slip out the back door. I adjust my backpack on my shoulders before crouching down. Albert is too cheap to get a camera for the back door so at least that’s working in my favor tonight.

Creeping through the backyards in the shitty neighborhood where I live takes me almost an hour. I have to be careful not to bump into the guys that run these streets late at night. While they mainly deal in drugs and guns, I know that seeing the wrong thing will get me killed too.

My life used to make sense. I used to be one of those little girls who went to Sunday school and whose mom put her hair in braids. I used to sing hymns and believe that God cared about me.

Then my dad who was deployed overseas came back in a box. They draped a flag over his casket and said some nice things. They gave him a salute and told me he was a hero. Then they left and everything fell apart.

My mom remarried Albert within a few months. He’s a chronic gambler so my dad’s life insurance was gone within a matter of weeks. Mom decided it was all too much and left one day. I came home early from school to find her packing. I tried to pack my suitcase too but turns out, this was her little escape. Not mine.
When I need a warrior to protect me, I know just who to turn to: my brother’s best friend. This growly cowboy will do whatever it takes to keep me safe. But what will happen when we cross the line between friendship and love?

Charlie

I’ve never been the type of woman to run before. I’ve always stood my ground and fought for what I wanted. But this is different. I’m afraid and the only man I can go to is my brother’s best friend, Brody Carson. He’s a retired Army Ranger turned rugged cowboy. He’s always been the one I wanted, the forbidden alpha I crave.

Right now, I need his protection. A dangerous man is stalking me, and Brody is the only one who can keep me safe. But when this is over, will I be able to walk away from the only man I’ve ever loved?

Brody

Charlie is the forbidden fruit I crave. She’s my best friend’s little sister which means I have to pretend that I’ve never noticed her juicy curves or her deep brown gaze that sees right to my very soul.

When she confesses to me what drove her to me, I see red. No one will ever terrify my innocent little lamb. Not with me around. But the longer she’s here, the more I know one thing for certain: it’s time to claim my curvy woman. Consequences be damned.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

CHARLIE

The sound of an eighteen-wheeler pulling to a stop nearby jolts me from my restless slumber. My heart pounds as I open gritty eyes and glance through the dirty, cracked windshield. I haven’t been sleeping well. Not since Mr. Big Shot started texting me.

I thought it would be fun to start a video channel online. I showcased my favorite things about Austin, the city where I live and work as a college student. A lot of people liked my videos, and I was starting to gain a following. Sure, it was only ten thousand subscribers, but I was having fun.

Until Mr. Big Shot.

The first time he messaged me, I talked with him for a few minutes. I thought he was nothing more than an overeager fan. It wasn’t the first time I had someone gush about my show and tell me how much they enjoyed it.

The week after our conversation, I was filming on location at a local eatery. My phone lit up with a new message. It was a picture of me, and my stomach plummeted when I realized the clothes in the photo were the exact ones I was wearing.

He was there somehow, watching me. I hadn’t posted where I would be filming or given any indication of what my next video would be about. Yet he’d still known.

I tried to go to the cops, but Mr. Big Shot wasn’t making threats. Apparently, it’s a free country. If a man wants to follow a pretty young woman around, then she should be flattered and grateful for the attention.

After that, I ignored him for a while. When that didn’t work, I blocked him. Finally, I changed my phone number in desperation.

Still, he found my new one and the messages became more frequent. I went on hiatus from my video channel last week. My videos are still available but I’m not posting anything new. I’d hoped that would make it stop. After all, he’d discovered me because of my videos. Maybe he’d stop if I went away for a couple of weeks.

But yesterday’s message came while I was in class. It was a picture from inside my apartment. Someone had written on my walls in lipstick. Come home soon.

I didn’t go home, and I sure as hell didn’t make the mistake of trying to go to the cops for help again. Instead, I borrowed clothes from my friend and traded in the shiny BMW that my brother bought me as a high school graduation gift. I traded it in for an old Cadillac and some cash.

Now I’m driving the rattling clunker on my way to the one person who will protect me if I can just get to him. Despite the numerous times I’ve switched interstates and changed directions, I still worry that I’m being followed.

It never mattered how much I varied my routines in Austin, Mr. Big Shot always seemed to know where I was. I could never figure out how he knew. I bought new electronic devices in case he was somehow tapping into my old ones. I changed all my passwords. I did everything I could think of to keep him in the dark.

Getting out of the car, I glance over my shoulder and pull my beanie lower. It only takes me six minutes to use the restrooms, hit the vending machine, and get back on the road again. I’ll sleep when I’m safe. If I’m ever safe again.

I wish Elliot were stateside. My brother is an Army Ranger, and I know it never would have gone this far if I’d reached out to him. But he’s overseas, probably on a dangerous mission. I won’t risk distracting him so I’m going to the warrior I know will protect me, Brody Carson.

My brother’s best friend. We haven’t talked since he helped me move into the dorm during my freshman year.

Elliot couldn’t be there, so he’d sent Brody in his place. Not that I minded getting help from the sexy Ranger with rolled up shirt sleeves and tattoos on his biceps. Damn, his biceps are big and thick. Everything about Brody is big and thick. Since I was old enough to be attracted to him, I’ve wanted him. I’ve always wished he would pin me against a wall and cage me in.

The dorm move was the day I let the fantasy get away from me. I kissed Brody in the elevator, and it was a million times better than even my dirtiest dreams. For a split second, he stayed completely still. Then he took over and in one swift motion, I was against that wall. He was sucking on my tongue, growling so loudly the vibrations were traveling into my throat.

But as the doors dinged open, he pulled away from me. When the haze of lust and longing cleared from his gaze, there was only one thing left: disgust. He didn’t have to say it. He’s known me since I was eight and he was seventeen. He probably thought it was weird that his best friend’s little sister kissed him.
When trouble comes looking for me, I know who to call—my ex-boyfriend’s dad. He’s the only one who can get me out of this mess. But can I convince this grumpy cowboy to finally claim me?

Brooke

The only good thing my cheating ex-boyfriend ever did for me was introduce me to his dad. Ryker Sullivan is a former Army Ranger turned scowling cowboy. He’s tough, unyielding, and so very hot.

When I run into trouble that only he can help me with, I decide to thank this grumpy cowboy…with my body. Seducing my ex-boyfriend’s dad feels like a foolproof plan until I realize I’m in love with him. Will Ryker finally claim me when this is all over or will I leave the ranch with a broken heart?

Ryker

I’ve never been able to say no to a woman in distress and Brooke is no exception. She’s a curvy, innocent little temptress that I long to corrupt. But that doesn’t make this dirty cowboy’s desires right.

The smart thing for me to do would be to get her out of trouble and send her away. Too bad I’ve never been much for doing the smart thing. Because once I finally claim this raven-haired beauty, she’ll learn the truth: this cowboy plays for keeps.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

BROOKE

I am the vault, the secret keeper. The one that knows all of my father’s dirty little dealings. For years, my knowledge has been the one thing that’s kept me alive.

After all, I was indispensable to my father the moment he realized I loved computers. He saw potential in me and carefully nurtured it. I was too young to realize he was preparing me to be the record keeper behind his criminal enterprise.

Now I know everything about his businesses—the legitimate ones and the not so legitimate ones. I know who owes him money, how much, and exactly what will happen to them if they don’t pay up.

“If the three of us are to live, you must run,” Bruce, my uncle who’s not really my uncle, interrupts my thoughts. He’s staring out the hospital window into the city lights below. It’s dusk, and Atlanta is just coming to life. My father owns this city. Hell, he owns almost all of Georgia at this point. Maybe not directly and not in the way most people think. But in every way that counts, he does.

All of the knowledge I have has protected me from my greedy stepbrothers who wanted to take over my father’s business. Oh, they’d never come out and challenge Lionel Lancaster directly.

But tonight, he’s lying in a hospital bed and unresponsive. He had a heart attack a few hours ago and was rushed into emergency surgery. Right now, Bruce and I are hiding him. The three of us—our lives are intertwined. If my father dies, so will I. So will Bruce.

There will be a power struggle now within our family. My brothers will with the support of my conniving stepmother attempt to take everything my father has built. The only stumbling block is me and the things I know. That’s why Bruce is telling me to run.

If my brothers get me to decrypt my father’s information, they’ll have the keys to the kingdom. After that, both my father, Bruce, and I will be of no use to them.

I’ve survived in my father’s world long enough to know what happens to people who are no longer of use. They end up in a barrel floating out to sea or in the swampy marshlands where the gators quickly hide any evidence. Neither end appeals to me.

“You’ll watch over him?” I ask quietly, staring at the ashen face of my father as he sleeps in the bed. It’s strange to see the mighty business mogul looking so frail in a white hospital gown. Part of me wants to lean over and shake his shoulder. I want to shout into his ear that he needs to wake up.

Medically induced coma means that won’t work. I think something went very wrong with the surgery, but the surgeon won’t talk to me. He only talked to Bruce. That’s why Bruce had him brought here after I found him this morning. My father was doubled over on the garage floor clutching at his chest. I knew better than to call my stepmother or anyone else who supposedly loves him. No one loves Lionel Lancaster. They just fear him. It’s a sad legacy and if my father has his way, it’ll become my legacy too.

“I’ll buy you as much time as I can,” Bruce says.

I’d ask who we can call in favors with, whose couch I can crash on for a few days. But we both know that’s a silly idea. In a moment like this—when so much is at stake—the families in Georgia will be shifting alliances. Knowing who to trust is tricky in a situation like this. Trusting the wrong family will get me killed.

“Should I go to—” I ask, thinking of an old family friend.

He turns from the window then, silencing me with an upheld hand. I know the rules better than anyone. Bruce should be told nothing. Nothing that they could squeeze out of him. Not that I think he would betray me. Bruce has been my father’s oldest friend. I can rely on him.

“Where is Cruella?” It’s what I call my stepmother, both for her love of expensive furs and her cruelty toward anyone that’s not my father or her sons.

He checks his watch. It’s Bruce’s job to know where every member of the family is at all times. My father might put on a good show of loving family man in front of the world. But we’re more like his pets. Pets he keeps on tight leashes. “She’ll be at the gala in an hour. If you go now, you’ll be able to slip inside.”

I cross the room and give Bruce a quick hug. He’s the closest thing to a friend I have and I’m not sure if we’ll ever see each other again. He presses a quick kiss to my head before murmuring, “Run far, Cookie.”
