He wasn’t supposed to want the enemy…
His family brutally murdered and his throne stolen, Prince Warrehn has planned his revenge for twenty years.
When he returns to reclaim his throne, all he wants is to punish the usurpers: the woman who killed his family, and her son, Samir, who has grown up to be as beautiful and as poisonous as his mother. He knows Samir can’t be trusted, but Warrehn can’t seem to stay away from him. It’s a goddamn disaster.
Samir never thought he’d have to play the part of the villain. Unfortunately, protecting his mother means being part of her plans to keep Warrehn from the throne, which only makes Warrehn despise him more.
But when he and Warrehn are thrown together in circumstances beyond their control, they have to learn to put up with each other. Samir has never been the object of such intense hatred—and such intense passion. Warrehn unsettles him and makes him behave like another person entirely, someone Samir barely recognizes: someone desperate and shameless.
He knows this thing between them is hopeless. They have no future together when Warrehn and his mother are determined to crush each other. He loves his mother, but his attraction to Warrehn is like a powerful drug, consuming him and changing him in ways he hasn’t expected. What will Samir do when he has to choose? Can love win over hatred and their parents’ messy, toxic past?

Those were the first words his mother said that morning.

Samir was five. His sleepy mind couldn’t understand what she was saying.

“They’re gone, my darling,” his mother said.

Samir blinked, utterly confused. Was Mother talking about the king and queen-consort? They had died months ago.

“Not them,” his mother said, with a strange smile. “The princes. Warrehn and little Eri. They were kidnapped by the rebels.” She added after a moment, “Poor things. They’re almost certainly dead.”

Samir stared at her.

Despite being a child, even he could tell she wasn’t being honest. His mother was glad that Warrehn and baby Eri were gone.

Samir wasn’t glad, but he wasn’t upset, either. He simply didn’t know them well. Warrehn was a lot older than him—ten—so he had never played with Samir. Eri was just three—he was practically a baby—so he and Samir didn’t really play together, either. Besides, there was the fact that Samir and his mother were basically the poor relations. Samir was technically next in line for the throne after the princes, but he came from a secondary royal line that descended from a completely different branch of the royal family tree, so distantly related to the royal family that they might as well not be related at all. The House of Zaver and the House of Lavette had shared a common ancestor eight hundred years ago. Samir was never supposed to inherit.

But he would, if the princes really were dead.

Three months later, the Council of Twelve Grand Clans declared that Prince Warrehn and Prince Eruadarhd were likely dead and named Samir the heir presumptive. His mother was to be his regent until he turned twenty-five.

In the following few days, everyone who was anyone seemed to remark on it. Such a tragedy, people exclaimed loudly before whispering to Samir’s mother, Such luck for your son, my dear.

Luck. Samir supposed that from a certain point of view it really was an insane stroke of luck that he, an insignificant prince from a secondary royal line, had been elevated to the status of a future king. His mother was thrilled, and it made Samir feel a little weird. He loved the large playroom in the royal palace, loved the expensive, amazing toys he suddenly owned, but he couldn’t help but feel like he and his mother didn’t really own them. Like they’d stolen them.

But as years passed, that feeling slowly went away.

He was Samir’ngh’lavette, the future king of the Fifth Grand Clan.

That was how he was raised.

That was who he was for nearly twenty years.

Until he suddenly wasn’t.

***

Apparently Prince Warrehn wasn’t dead.

And he was coming back home.

“This cannot be happening,” Dalatteya muttered under her breath, pacing the throne room. “A solution. There has to be a solution!”

Samir watched his mother, a strange sort of numbness filling his insides ever since he had heard the news. “He’s the rightful king, Mother,” he stated. He felt… off-balance. As if everything he knew about his world had been turned upside down. Just a few hours ago he had been preparing for his upcoming coronation. He was to be the king when he turned twenty-five, the position his mother had groomed him for since he was five. In fact, he was practically the king already, ruling their grand clan through his mother, who was his regent. But now he was back to being the poor relation. No one.

It was surreal.

Dalatteya glared at him. “Stop talking nonsense, Samir!” she bit out. “You’re the rightful king, not him! He isn’t the one who made our grand clan the most prosperous on the planet!” Her beautiful face brightened, her dark blue eyes becoming calculating. “We can use it, in fact. Our people love you, not him. All Warrehn has going for him is his lineage. It won’t be impossible to overthrow him.”

“Mother,” Samir said, glancing around. That kind of talk was dangerous.

But Dalatteya ignored him and resumed pacing, muttering something under her breath.

Samir sighed, watching her twirl a lock of her violet hair as she thought. He loved his mother, he truly did, but she could be a little too much sometimes. He didn’t like seeing her like this. He had known she could be ruthless and calculating, but it was usually for a good reason. This… he wasn’t sure it was a good one. While he did feel upset at his life being overturned again, Samir didn’t feel like he was entitled to the throne the way his mother seemed to think he should be. Warrehn had been the crown prince as a ten-year-old; he was of age now, twenty-nine, almost thirty. He was the rightful king of the Fifth Grand Clan by right of succession. Samir would have to accept it.

It would be a lie to say that he didn’t feel any resentment or disappointment. He did. Of course he did. After fifteen years of preparing for the role and effectively ruling for the past four years, he felt… robbed. Completely blindsided. As if his life suddenly had no meaning or purpose. If he wasn’t the future king, who was he? It had been part of his identity for most of his life. So yes, he was disappointed and upset. But it was nothing compared to the sheer rage emanating from his mother.
A master manipulator and an orphaned prince caught in his schemes: it wasn't supposed to be a love story…
Separated from his family after an assassination attempt, Prince Eridan is rescued by the reclusive Order of monks who control High Hronthar, an isolated school for telepaths. Eridan despises his Master, and yet he finds himself craving his attention and approval like a drug he can’t live without.
We can’t kill the brats yet!”

Later, Prince Warrehn would be grateful that he’d decided to answer the call of nature behind that bush and not any of the others.

But that would be later.

Now the boy stood frozen, not daring to breathe as his own bodyguards argued about the best time to kill Warrehn and his little brother.

One of the bodyguards was insisting that they should do it now while they were near the Kavalchi Mountains and communicators didn’t work. Another bodyguard argued that waiting until dark would be better.

But it was when the third one spoke that Warrehn’s blood went cold. “The sooner we do it, the sooner Her Excellency pays us.”

Her Excellency.

There were several people that title could refer to, but it wasn’t difficult to guess who the bodyguard was talking about: Aunt Dalatteya. Warrehn didn’t want to believe it, but—

But his aunt did have the most to gain if something were to happen to him and Eri: her own son would inherit the throne.

Trying to suppress his shock, anger, and betrayal—now wasn’t the time—Warrehn carefully moved away from the bushes, toward the malfunctioning aircraft where he had left his baby brother. Distantly, he wondered whether the aircraft was actually malfunctioning. It was quite convenient that the transport broke in the middle of nowhere, forcing their bodyguards to make an emergency landing in the Revialli Forest. But even if the aircraft was in working condition, it would be of no use to him. It could only be used by a certified pilot; its anti-theft system would never allow a ten-year-old to fly it, crown prince or not.

“We’re going to play a game, Eri,” Warrehn whispered, lifting his three-year-old brother out of the aircraft. “You’ll need to be very quiet, all right? We’re going to run, and we don’t want them to catch us.”

Eri grinned, his violet eyes wide with excitement, and allowed Warrehn to gather him into his arms without making a fuss. Thank heaven for small mercies.

Glancing back warily toward the bushes, Warrehn hugged his baby brother close to his chest and ran.

He’d never run this fast in his life.

He didn’t know how long he ran. He didn’t even notice when the forest floor began to slope upward as he neared the mountain. His lungs hurt, his ribs ached, and the toddler in his arms seemed to become heavier with every moment. Sharp branches scratched his face and his arms, tearing skin and leaving bruises, gnarled tree roots tripped him, and his eyes stung with sweat and angry tears, but Warrehn kept running. Sometimes he thought he could hear the sounds of pursuit close behind. Leaves rustled and twigs snapped, but that could be animals going about their business. Warrehn could only hope.

But before long, Eri started complaining, and then he was crying.

“Shhh. Please, please, don’t cry,” Warrehn whispered hoarsely, desperation clawing in his chest like a trapped beast. The sounds of their pursuers seemed closer now, but he couldn’t even hide, because Eri wouldn’t stop crying.

That was when he heard it: a sound coming from another direction. It sounded like… an aircar?

Warrehn ran toward the sound.

And there it was, a small aircar passing just over the clearing.

Warrehn waved frantically, trying to attract the attention of the pilot. For a moment, he thought it was all in vain, but then the aircar turned back and started landing in the clearing.

It was the longest moment of Warrehn’s life. The bittersweet part was, he knew that even if the aircar landed before his bodyguards caught up to them, it wouldn’t save him. That model of aircar was meant for one person; there would be no place for a tall ten-year-old. Even if he managed to convince the pilot to lend him the aircar, he wouldn’t be able to fly it: he didn’t have a license and the car wouldn’t allow him to pilot it without one.

But the pilot could take Eri. At least his brother would escape. He would be alive. Warrehn hated the thought of entrusting his brother to a stranger, but it was his only chance. Their only chance. Without the crying toddler in his arms, Warrehn would have a better chance of losing his pursuers in the forest, and then he could come back for Eri.

He ran toward the aircar before it even fully landed. As the door opened, Warrehn kissed the crying toddler on the forehead, whispering, “I’ll come back for you,” before shoving Eri into the arms of the pilot—a young man. “This is Prince Eruadarhd of the Fifth Royal House. There are people after his life. Take him and hide him until I come back.”

Eri went quiet in the stranger’s arms, looking at him curiously.

“Wait,” the stranger said, but at that moment, there was the sound of branches breaking, awfully close.

Banished by his parents to the third planet in the Sol system, Prince Harht’ngh’chaali of the Second Grand Clan is completely fascinated by its inhabitants. Adam Crawford isn’t looking for love. Financially secure and good-looking, he’s in a good place in his life. Star-crossed love between a human man and an alien prince from a world half a galaxy away.
Everything about them was so fascinating. Even their names were refreshingly short and interesting, not at all like names back home.

Take Harry’s name, for example. Well, the point was, it wasn’t his real name. His real name was very hard to pronounce for humans. The muscular properties of humans’ tongues were limiting for certain types of phonetic articulation, including Harry’s native language.

Harry liked his chosen human name better than his real one, anyway. “Harry” was similar enough to his given name and sounded so nice and unusual. He couldn’t help but smile every time someone addressed him as Harry. Humans tended to give him strange looks when he beamed at them happily, but Harry didn’t mind. He had read on the Internet that it was okay to be weird and quirky as long as one wasn’t too weird. Hopefully he wasn’t.

“Uh, dude, are you going to smile at me all day or are you going to finally give me my money?”

Torn from his musings, Harry smiled serenely at the big pink man who was frowning at him. (Harry didn’t understand why humans called pink people “white” and brown people “black.” Were humans color-blind? Why did skin color matter so much, anyway? Weren’t people just people? Humans were so confusing.)

“Sure thing, dude,” Harry said, imitating the man’s speech patterns. His research said that humans responded positively to mimicking their behavior. Harry was very good at it. He rather liked the man’s accent.

The man’s frown deepened. He looked at Harry oddly. “Are you mocking me?” He cracked his knuckles for some reason.

“No?” Harry said, confused, and gave him his change.

The man glowered at him, grabbed his coffee and his change, and left, the bell tinkling softly as he exited the coffee shop.

Harry worked at this little place called Star Coffee. He absolutely loved it! The apt name aside, it was quiet and charming, and it was also the only place willing to hire him. Harry had discovered that to survive on this planet he needed money, and the easiest way to make money was to find a job. Unfortunately, he had also discovered that for a young human male without any education, job options were very limited. Harry was still a little angry at his parents for giving him only false identification documents with the name he’d chosen and a small amount of human money before dropping him in a city called London two Terran months ago.

“It will teach you a lesson,” they had told him. “We’ve spoiled you too much. Maybe the experience will finally make you grow up.”

Harry had been secretly pleased at the time. If his parents thought it was a punishment, they didn’t know him at all. He’d always dreamed of getting off his planet and seeing the universe. Humans, or Terrans, as they called them back home, had always fascinated him. Their society hadn’t yet reached the technological and cultural level required for Contact, but it wasn’t long now, perhaps one thousand years at most unless humans destroyed themselves before that. For now, Earth was used only for short, educational trips—or when one’s parents wanted to punish their child for doing naughty things like reading other people’s minds without permission. (Harry had told his parents he didn’t mean it, but, sadly, no one believed him.)

Anyway, having a real, human job was fascinating. Harry didn’t mind working at Star Coffee. His boss had kindly agreed to give him his salary in cash and Harry didn’t even mind that he seemed to earn less than the other employees. He took pride in the small stack of human money he received every month. There was no physical money on Calluvia anymore, hadn’t been for a few thousand years.

Working at the coffee shop suited him very much. It was a job that wasn’t suspicious for a young human male of eighteen years. That was his age according to his fake documents. Harry wasn’t actually eighteen; he was twenty-three in Calluvian years, but since a Calluvian year was shorter than a Terran year, he probably was around eighteen or nineteen in Terran years. Harry wasn’t sure; mathematics had never been his strongest point.

“Hey.”

Torn from his daydreaming once again, Harry looked at the next customer.

It was a young male in a dark suit. His skin wasn’t as pink as the previous man’s. It was more golden than pink. He had very dark, very nice eyes. Harry liked dark eyes. They were so rare on Calluvia, unlike Harry’s own violet eyes.

“Hello,” Harry said, flashing the human a friendly smile. He had learned that humans gave bigger tips when he did that. Harry felt a little bad for exploiting it, but a guy’s gotta eat, as humans said.

The human smiled back, handing him a five pound note. “A cappuccino, please.”

When Harry returned with his coffee, the guy said, “Thank you, Harry.”
Ice Prince.
Prince Jamil of Calluvia dislikes that moniker, but he has to admit it’s not wrong. He is responsible and proper, and it’s probably accurate to say that he isn’t good at emotions. After being widowed, Jamil’s life has revolved around his duties as a crown prince and little else.
But one night it changes. One night, Jamil meets a man at the royal stables, a man who is the opposite of proper, a man with eyes as black as sin.
Rohan di’Lehr is everything Jamil should despise.
He’s a rude, lowborn criminal.
He’s terrible for Jamil’s self-control.
He makes Jamil behave like a wanton man, not the crown prince.
They have nothing in common. They have no future together. He still can’t stay away.
A story of forbidden attraction and love that defies all odds.

Shayla suppressed a sigh, looking at her daughter’s eager little face. Her five-year-old adored fairy tales and wanted a new story every night, but she absolutely detested repetition.

Shayla looked around, looking for inspiration, and her gaze stopped on the glossy magazine on her nightstand. Gossip magazines on the royals of the Inner Core planets were a bit of a guilty pleasure for her, something Shayla couldn’t really afford but couldn’t resist buying. Maybe they would finally be useful for something.

Shayla picked up the magazine and stared at the man on the cover. “Once upon a time, there was a beautiful prince,” she said wistfully. “He was so beautiful that the tales of his beauty spread even to the Fringe planets of the Union. It was said that one look at the prince stole people’s breaths away—so beautiful he was.” Shayla might have been exaggerating a little for the sake of the story, but the prince in question really was breathtakingly handsome.

Her daughter perked up. “What did he look like?”

Shayla smiled. “He was tall, strong, and graceful, with the kind of face that was impossible to look away from. He had wavy brown hair, deep green eyes, and skin that was so fair and perfect it seemed to almost glow.” Shayla decided not to mention that the prince had a sensual, red bow of a mouth that made her think very naughty and non-fairy-tale appropriate thoughts. Her daughter didn’t need to know that.

“He sounds very pretty,” Nina said.

Shayla smiled at her daughter. “He was.”

Nina looked excited now. “What happened then?”

“The prince was betrothed to another child from a noble family when he was even younger than you. They eventually got married and were very happy together. They were considered the most beautiful couple in the galaxy.” Shayla smiled wistfully, remembering the articles about the couple, how good they looked together. Although the prince-consort had been no match for the prince’s beauty—no one really was, maybe except for the prince’s younger brother—they made a gorgeous couple. They had been the Couple, the relationship lowborn nobodies like Shayla aspired to have. Shayla used to collect all the articles she could find about the Calluvian royal couple, adoring them together despite never even seeing them in person. Calluvia was a planet of the Inner Core, very far away from the rural bumfuck of a planet Shayla lived on.

“Did they live happily ever after?” Nina said.

Shayla’s smile faded. “No. Years after the royal wedding, the prince-consort was killed by the rebels—very bad people.” It was still hard to believe, even months later. Truth be told, Shayla felt a little bit heartbroken about it, as if part of her childhood had died too. She swallowed. “And it was said that the prince never smiled again after that, his heart freezing over.”

Her little daughter frowned. “It’s a sad story, Mommy! I don’t like it.”

Shayla kissed her on the forehead gently. “I know, sweetie. But not all stories have a happy ending. They’re still worth telling.”

Nina pouted. “Can’t the prince fall in love again and be happy?”

Shayla stared at her. “No, of course not,” she said faintly. The mere idea of the prince falling in love with someone else just seemed… preposterous. Wrong.

“Why not?” her daughter said.

Shayla frowned, not sure what to say. She could hardly say that she had been too invested in the relationship of two people she didn’t even know, and that was why she didn’t want the prince to fall in in love again.

Maybe it was selfish of her, but Shayla was a strong believer that people could only love once, and she was sure there was no man who could ever eclipse the prince-consort in the prince’s heart.

Shayla looked down at the glossy magazine, at the ice in the prince’s once-warm eyes.

Prince Jamil’s heart really seemed to have frozen. It would take a miracle to melt the ice again.

Or fire.

Chapter 1

Jamil couldn’t sleep.

He tossed and turned in his huge, empty bed for what felt like forever, but sleep evaded him, no matter how tired he was. Of course it also didn’t help that he had a splitting headache.

Sighing, Jamil sat up. He squeezed his eyes shut and reached mentally to the remnants of his marriage bond. If he concentrated hard enough, he could almost feel Mehmer at the other end. He knew it was just a delusion. The High Adept had checked his mind and confirmed that Jamil’s bond was torn completely. He’d said that it was normal for a widower to imagine that they could feel their deceased bondmate. The phenomenon was widely known, and he urged Jamil to block off the bond.

The pain will soon fade, the mind adept had said. All you will feel is absence.

Jamil had almost laughed in his face, because it didn’t exactly sound comforting. But then again, it wasn’t like the mind adept would know. The monks of the High Hronthar were the only people on the planet who didn’t have to be bonded. They didn’t know what it felt like to share a telepathic bond with another person since early childhood. They couldn’t even imagine what it felt like to have such a cherished bond and then lose it. They had no clue. Sometimes Jamil envied them that.
“I hate you.” Please touch me.
The messed up part is he means everything he says. The youngest prince of his clan, Seyn has been betrothed to the crown prince of another clan since birth. Everyone says he’s so lucky to marry one of the most respected, powerful men on the planet, but Seyn knows better.
He hates him with every fiber of his being. Ksar is a cold, uncaring, overbearing bastard who uses underhanded tactics to achieve his goals and who either ignores Seyn or criticizes everything about him. Seyn can’t stand him, and he’s willing to do anything to get out of the arranged marriage to a man he abhors.
But the line between feverish hatred and passion can be very thin, and it turns out that freedom isn’t as appealing as it once seemed. Is it messed up to miss a man you loathe?
Is it sick to want his hands on you?
Seyn knows it’s insane. He knows he should stop going back. But knowing something and doing it are two different things.

To be betrothed to the heir to a throne, to the most politically influential man on the planet…Everyone said Seyn was lucky.

Seyn didn’t feel lucky. He hated that man more than anything.

* * *

When Seyn was a child, he loved bedtime stories about kings and queens, brave princes and princesses, and their exciting adventures. There would be nothing special about it—he couldn’t be the only child who liked such stories—but Seyn was a little special, after all. Seyn was a prince himself, and there was a story about him, too. It was his favorite.

“Very well, my love,” the Queen said with fond exasperation, tucking a strand of silver hair behind her four-year-old son’s ear. “But this is the last time. And then you will sleep.”

Seyn nodded, beaming at his mother and looking at her expectantly.

“Once upon a time,” the Queen started in her soft voice. “There was a beautiful little prince. He was born two months early—”

“To save another prince’s life!” Seyn interrupted excitedly. “I did it!”

“Yes, darling,” the Queen said with a smile, leaning down to kiss his forehead. “You saved another prince’s life. And not just any prince’s—it was the life of a very special prince—the Crown Prince of the Second Grand Clan.”

Seyn nodded. He was old enough to know that there were twelve royal families on Calluvia, and some princes were more important than the others.

“His name was Prince Ksar, and he was very ill,” his mother said.

Seyn frowned, for the first time feeling curious enough about the mysterious illness to ask. “Ill?”

“You’re probably too young to understand,” his mother said with a slightly pinched expression on her face. “Prince Ksar’s bondmate had died from a very rare telepathic disease, and it made Ksar’s telepathy dangerously unstable. He needed another bondmate to stop hurting. But there were no other unbonded boys or girls of royal blood, so Ksar’s parents asked us to bring you to this world early so that you could be bonded to Prince Ksar.”

“And I saved him!”

“You did,” the Queen said with an affectionate smile. “And now you’re bonded to Prince Ksar and will marry him when you turn twenty-five. It’s a great honor and privilege, my darling.” Probably feeling his uncertainty through the familial bond that they shared, she smiled at him and said, “Don’t worry, my love. He will cherish you and treat you well. You’re bonded for life. The bond between you and Ksar will make him predisposed to like you. That’s how the bond works.”

Seyn stared at his mother with a frown. “But I’m not bonded to anyone, Mother.”

Queen Janesh smiled and shook her head. “We bonded you to him right after your birth. You’re just young and your telepathy isn’t fully developed yet. I’m sure you’ll feel him soon.”

Seyn nodded, accepting the explanation and figuring that his mother was right. As far as Seyn was concerned, his mother was always right.

But years passed, and gradually it became obvious that his mother had been wrong—or there was something wrong with him. He didn’t feel his bondmate at all, no matter how hard he concentrated.

By the time Seyn turned fourteen—the age people’s telepathic abilities fully developed—he was sure that there was something wrong with his bond. Other children his age were happily bonded, and the way they described their bonds was completely unfamiliar to him.

“It’s like having a best friend at the back of my mind,” his older brother, Jamil, told him, his expression softening. Jamil and his bondmate were getting married in a few months, and they were nauseatingly sweet together. “It’s a special connection like no other.” Jamil looked at him curiously, with green eyes that mirrored Seyn’s. “Why are you asking that, kid? Isn’t it the same for you?”

Seyn made something up, successfully hiding his growing uneasiness and uncertainty. There was nothing but silence at the back of his mind. No friend, no bondmate, no special connection. Nothing. Even when he spent hours meditating, all he could feel was a vague connection that led somewhere, but his every attempt to communicate was met with silence.

He didn’t know what to do. He considered telling his parents, but he was too embarrassed. He didn’t want doctors and mind adepts poking at him—and declaring him defective.

So instead, Seyn decided to research the bond.

The amount of information was a little overwhelming, and most of it was boring as hell, but Seyn was able to find something that might explain why his bond was so weird.

The thing was, bonding was supposed to be easy and uncomplicated. It had been over four thousand years since Calluvians had started practicing childhood bonds. It had been supposedly scientifically proven that bonding children’s telepathic cores made their telepathy more stable. There had also been political reasons for introducing the Bonding Law, but Seyn found himself skimming the boring bits.
