I sat on the couch beside Adelina with my arm draped over her shoulders. We were both watching TV, but I knew neither one of us was really thinking about the content on the screen. I risked my neck to save her life, and when I told her what she meant to me, she didn’t feel the same way back.

It fucking hurt.

I had been certain she felt the same way, thought I felt it in every kiss she gave me. She had just returned from a gruesome captivity, and she didn’t refrain from touching me. She wanted me all over her, my lips sealed to her mouth.

But that didn’t mean anything.

Now here we were—in painful silence.

My phone rang, and Pearl’s name was on the screen. I hadn’t spoken to her since the raid, so I assumed it was important. I took the call and pressed the phone to my ear. “Hey, I—”

“Crow has been captured.” She spoke a million miles an hour. “Tristan took him from the house, and now they’re heading east. Get him, Cane. Now!”

My reflexes were quick, and I was on my feet instantly. I darted for the pistol sitting on the counter and shoved it into the back of my jeans. I grabbed the bulletproof vest still sitting out. “I’m moving.”

“Hurry!”

I hung up and strapped on the vest as I headed out the door. My pulse was thudding in my ears, and I could barely hear my surroundings. The sounds from the TV disappeared and Adelina said something, but I couldn’t make it out. I grabbed the machine gun from the closet and bolted out the front door.

“Cane!” Adelina ran after me. “What’s going on?”

“Stay inside.” I didn’t turn back to her as I ran to the car. “I have to go. I can’t talk.” I cranked the engine and sped off, heading toward Cane’s house on the other side of the fields. I made a call to Bran on the way, telling him to gather up everyone he could and head to my tracker point. When that was done, I pulled up Crow’s location on the center screen.

It was still working.

Thank fucking god.

I hit the gas harder and sped nearly a hundred miles an hour down the empty roads. It was almost midnight, so no one was on the streets, thankfully. Now I knew Tristan was alive, and this time, I wouldn’t let him slip away. He would regret taking my brother when I beat him to death with the end of my shotgun.

I followed the tracker and tried to gain on them, but they were driving furiously just the way I was. They were heading east, which told me they intended to stay in Italy. There was no chance they were taking Crow on a plane unless they had a private one. But even then, that seemed unlikely.

Bran spoke over my phone system in the car. “We’re ten minutes behind you. What’s the plan?”

“Haul ass. Tristan is alive, and he has Crow. They must be returning to their base, and they have no idea we’re tracking—” The dot with Crow’s position suddenly disappeared. The map was completely blank. The vicinity where he had been was now empty.

“Cane?” Bran said. “You cut out.”

I refreshed the page and pulled the map back up on the screen.

His coordinate was gone. “Fuck…”

“What?”

I slammed my hand so hard against the steering wheel I nearly broke the bones. “They found the fucking tracker. Jesus Christ.” Tristan must have run a scanner across his body the second they were on the road. They obviously found the transmitter and cut it out.

Pearl must have just seen the same thing.

“Shit,” Bran said. “What do we do?”

I didn’t have an answer. I never panicked in stressful situations, even if they were a matter of life and death. But this was my brother, and losing him scared me far more than losing my own life. The whole reason he was captured was because of me. I should be the one tied up in the back of that car—not him.

I couldn’t handle the guilt.

I couldn’t face Pearl.

I couldn’t face myself.

“Cane?” Bran repeated.

I kept driving even though I no longer had a destination. “They were headed east. If they were planning on flying out, they would have headed to Florence. They must be going to Rome or somewhere in that vicinity.”

“What’s the description? What kind of cars are we looking for?”

“I…I don’t know.” I had no idea what happened at the estate. Pearl made it sound like they snatched Crow and left. There wasn’t a single witness to help me.

“Cane, I need something more than that.”

“I know,” I hissed. “I don’t have anything, Bran. I just know we need to find Crow as soon as possible—” My phone started to beep as someone called me on the other line. It was an unknown number, and due to the situation I was in, I thought it would be stupid to ignore it. “Hold on, Bran.” I hit the button and switched over. “Cane.” My tone immediately changed, turning defensive in preparation for whatever would happen next.
Inhumane.

“Place that dresser here.” I moved to the spot where our old dresser had been and pointed it out for the movers. They carried the heavy, rustic piece of wood and placed it directly against the wall.

“Great. And then the nightstands go here.” I directed the movers to place the last two pieces of furniture where they belonged then got to work on returning Crow’s boxers and socks into the drawers, along with the rest of his clothes. The master bedroom had been distinctly masculine, with black dressers and a matching headboard, and since this place was half mine now, I wanted to change it up a bit.

Lars appeared in the doorway, his hands behind his back. “Mrs. Barsetti, I probably don’t need to tell you that His Grace won’t be too pleased with this.”

I folded Crow’s sweat pants and stuffed them into the drawer. “You’re right. I’m fully aware of the consequences.” I shut the drawer then placed the brand-new vase of flowers on the dresser. I added my little touches. A few Mediterranean pieces that tied the room together and truly made it stand out. Crow wouldn’t be happy about the changes. He hated change in any capacity. But he’d deal with it.

“If he asks, I tried to talk you out of it.”

Lars did a lot of things for me around the estate that Crow didn’t know about. I was an excellent secret keeper and never threw our faithful servant under the bus. He was family, as far as I was concerned. He’d stitched that knife inside my wound, the very one I killed Bones with. To this day, Crow thought I pulled that off by myself. “Of course.”

Lars continued to linger in the doorway, standing upright and tall like old age hadn’t affected him just yet.

“Did you need something, Lars?”

“Cane is here to see you. He wants to have lunch.”

“Oh, that’s great.” I was finished with the bedroom, so the timing couldn’t be better.

Lars looked uncomfortable with betraying his master. “Perhaps you should let His Grace know?”

Crow didn’t like it when I was alone with any man besides himself or Lars. Even though Cane was his brother, he still wasn’t good enough to trust. Crow might never truly forgive Cane for what he did to me. But if I could let it go, he should be able to let it go too. “That’s unnecessary. I’ll be down in a moment.”

“Yes, Mrs. Barsetti.” Lars gave a quick bow before he walked out.

Crow and I saw family in different lights. Since I didn’t have anyone, family meant a lot more to me. Cane was the closest thing I’d ever had to a brother. In fact, he was my brother. Life was too short to hold grudges—even if Cane had almost killed me.

I walked into the dining room where Crow and I usually had breakfast together. “Hey.”

“Hey, sis.” Cane stood up and hugged me. He was more affectionate, considerate, and gentle with me than he was with anyone else. It didn’t even seem as if he liked Crow most of the time. “Is Crow driving you mad yet?”

“Not quite.” I took the seat across from Cane and saw the two wineglasses Lars had already poured. One thing I liked about Tuscany was the relaxed attitude about wine. It didn’t matter how early it was in the day. It was perfectly acceptable to drink wine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. “But I just redid our bedroom, and he’s not gonna be happy about it.”

“As long as it’s not pink, I doubt he’ll care.”

“He’s very particular.”

Cane took a long drink before he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Well, he has a wife now. He’s gonna have to get over it.”

“I’m sure there will be an argument. But I’ll do something nice for him, and that will shut him up real quick.”

Cane winked then tapped his wineglass against mine. “You understand men very well.”

A basket of fresh bread was on the table along with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We pulled pieces onto our plates and ate like we were in a restaurant. Even when Lars wasn’t expecting company, he was always prepared. “What’s new with you?”

“The weapons business has really changed. With Bones out of the picture, it’s a bit chaotic.”

“How so?”

“Well, he was one of the biggest players in the trade. Without him, smaller factions are now competing for the top. They’re trying to steal his contacts, his clients. It’s pretty much a free-for-all.”

“How does this affect you?” It was easy to talk to Cane because he was always honest. He didn’t withhold information the way Crow did. He spoke his mind candidly and was easy to read, unlike his brother. I only knew how to read Crow because I had so much practice.

“I’m not big fans of these clients. They’re involved with the underworld even more than I am. I wouldn’t be surprised if we found another enemy on our hands. One that’s more ruthless than before.”

She didn’t make a fuss about leaving or seem to consider running. She kept her head down through the airport, was silent on the flight back, and returned to Italy without a single complaint.

How did she maintain such restraint?

If I had been able to see Vanessa one last time, I wouldn’t have let her go. I would have tied her up so she couldn’t leave. Whoever burst through the door to retrieve her would have to go through me—and a million bullets.

When we returned to my house in the countryside, we immediately went to sleep in my enormous bed. The maids had just cleaned the place, so the sheets were fresh and soft against my skin. We lay side by side, but no sex was had.

I knew she didn’t want it.

She was exhausted, so she went straight to sleep.

I was tired too, but all I could do was think. I stared up at the ceiling and pictured the way her parents hugged her goodbye. They were both in tears, even her father. They hugged her so tightly that Adelina had to pull their hands off.

It was too painful to watch.

Hours passed before I finally drifted off to sleep, my brain shutting down because it didn’t want to think anymore. My body found hers, and my arms wrapped around her petite rib cage, holding her like a stuffed animal.

Morning arrived within the blink of an eye.

My eyes opened to Adelina wrapped around my body. Her face rested in the crook of my shoulder, some of her brown was hair across my chest. Her arm circled my waist, her petite hand rising and falling with my stomach as I breathed. One slender leg was tucked between my knees. She was clinging to me like I was her savior, not the evil fiend I truly was. She didn’t see the world in black and white. Her traumatic experiences taught her that life was much more complicated than that. Maybe I was evil, but I wasn’t the kind of evil she needed to be scared of.

I watched her with lidded eyes, waking up to the sound of her gentle breathing. Sometimes she adjusted her position, moved her arm to a different place along my abs. Her lips were parted slightly, and her warm breath fell directly across my skin.

I watched her as the sun rose higher in the sky and flooded the bedroom with morning light. She was usually awake at the crack of dawn, and her sleepiness told me she was knocked out from our long flight.

Since I had work to do, I couldn’t wait around forever. I got out of bed, took a quick shower, and then headed to the base. Crow and I had a brief conversation on the phone just before we prepared to leave for our flight, so not much was said.

But he was definitely pissed.

I got to the base, took care of a few things, and then found Crow sitting in the assembly building. The completed guns were stacked on shelves while the others were on tables in the center of the room. The skeletons were done, but the specific parts of the gun work needed to be completed. Crow stood in one of the aisles, his hands resting in his pockets. He was staring straight ahead at a plain wall. He was absolutely still like one of the statues in Rome. His chest didn’t rise or fall with a single breath. His expression didn’t seem different because he wore the same look of consternation at all times.

But I knew he wasn’t the same man anymore.

I walked down the aisle and stopped when I was ten feet away. He was in a black suit, obviously intent on heading to the winery when he was finished at the warehouse. I gave him the opportunity to speak first, to see just how sour his mood was.

But he didn’t speak. He didn’t even look at me.

This was going to be a bad day.

“Pretty fascinating wall, huh?” I tried to lighten the mood by being a smartass. It usually coaxed Crow into some kind of reaction. I looked at one of the guns sitting on the table and felt it in my hands. I ran my thumb along the smooth barrel before I returned it to the table.

Crow turned his head slightly to look at me, but his reaction was exactly the same. He didn’t spit out some harsh insult or tell me to jump off a cliff.

Now I was really worried. “What did Pearl do?”

He turned his gaze back to the wall.

I tried to be patient and wait for Crow to speak when he finally found the words. My brother was the strong and silent type, but he usually had more to say than this. He must have had too many thoughts in his head to keep them straight. Or his jaw was clenched so tightly that he couldn’t unhinge it to talk.

Maybe he's forgotten about me. One day, I walk into my apartment and spot the pile of buttons on the counter. I never left them there, and there's only one explanation for their presence.

Pearl

“Oh, baby. Didn’t you miss me?” I cocked my head to the side and pursed my lips. My voice came out high-pitched and affectionate, and my disdain added a nice ring to it.

Jacob’s jaw dropped when he saw me on his doorstep. Shirtless and with messy hair, he looked like he’d been hitting the sheets with some poor girl who had no idea her boyfriend was the biggest piece of shit on the planet. “Pearl…oh my god. You’re okay.” Once the shock subsided he pretended to give a damn. “I’m so glad you’re okay. I was so worried—”

I kneed him right in the balls. “Save it.”

He cupped his balls and leaned forward, moaning under his breath. He gripped the door frame for balance and breathed hard through the pain.

“I’m sorry. Did that hurt?”

He closed his eyes and gripped the frame harder. His knuckles began to turn white.

“Try getting fucked in the ass.” I pushed past him and walked into the apartment I used to live in. All I had was the purse I snatched from that woman. I had a driver’s license and a passport and some Euros. But that was it. I opened the fridge and took out an old box of pizza. Since I was starving I ate a slice cold.

A woman appeared from the hallway wearing nothing but one of his t-shirts. “Who the hell are you?”

I gave her a quick wave and finished my pizza. “I’m Pearl, Jacob’s ex-girlfriend.”

“He never told me about anyone named Pearl.”

“Probably because he sold me into sex-trafficking to pay off his gambling debts.”

Her eyes dilated but her reaction didn’t change. She glanced at Jacob, who was still hunched over by the door, and then turned back to me. She couldn’t decide if she believed me or not. I couldn’t blame her. The story was so ridiculous I couldn’t believe it actually happened.

Jacob finally recovered from the hit to his balls and stood upright. His cheeks were flooded with blood and when he took a step he winced. I got him hard with my knee and he wouldn’t be able to get an erection for at least a week.

I finished the pizza and left the box on the counter. It was the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. But then again, I was just on a twelve-hour plane ride with nothing to eat but peanuts. “Damn, this is pretty good.”

His girlfriend crossed her arms over her chest and stared at Jacob. She didn’t feel comfortable talking in front of me so she just glared at him. Like that would somehow get rid of me quicker.

Jacob finally spoke to her. “Danielle, can I have a moment alone?”

“Why?” I asked. “Don’t you think she should know you’re a cold motherfucker?” I leaned against the counter and stared him down. Now that I face to face with him I wanted beat him bloody. There was no trace of feelings or compassion for this man. All I felt was hate.

Strong, furious hate.

Jacob kept his mouth shut. He knew there was nothing he could say to make himself look good. It was best not to say anything at all.

“Is that true?” Danielle asked.

Now Jacob was being attacked on both fronts. “Baby, could you please give us a moment?”

“No, not a moment,” I said. “Get the hell out. I’m about to castrate your boyfriend and I’m not sure if you want to see it.”

“That’s it.” She headed to the bedroom. “I’m calling the police.”

“Whoa, wait.” Jacob turned her away immediately, his body moving faster than the pain would allow. He cringed after the movement, feeling it deep in his groin. “Don’t call the police.”

I smiled in victory. That was as good as a confession.

“Then what the hell, Jacob?” she screamed. “Is she really your ex?”

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“Did you really sell her into trafficking?” she pressed.

I grinned from ear to ear and watched him struggle. If he lied and said no, I’d put him in his place. And if he said yes, he would lose his the sexy blonde he was sleeping with. “Jacob, she asked you a question.”

He turned his face toward me, and his expression was ice-cold.

“Wow. You have a lot of nerve to look at me like I’m the bad guy.” Maybe when she was gone he would try to kill me. That would be the perfect ending. I’d end his life with a knife through his heart and take off. Could you try a missing person in the court of law? I don’t think so.

Jacob’s voice came out more firm. “Danielle, can we talk tomorrow?”

“Oh my god.” She covered her mouth with her hand. “You did it…” She ran into the bedroom and grabbed her clothes and purse. Without even changing she darted out in just his t-shirt. Not once did she look at him as she left.
What was truly waiting for me back at home? A man who cared so little about our time together that he threw me away like an old piece of trash. When his gambling debts got too high, he was willing to sell a person—me—just to make ends meet. What if he wasn’t in debt? What if he just needed money to buy a house or a car? Would he trade me in for that too?

I didn’t know what to think anymore.

The agony that weighed on my heart cut deeper than a blade. It hurt more than a steel baseball bat against my ribcage. There was nothing worse than having no purpose.

And I had none.

I looked at the jar on the table in my bedroom and saw the pitiful amount of buttons I’d accumulated. I agreed to our sick deal because I was determined to return home. But now that I lacked motivation to leave, the buttons seemed irrelevant. The only use they had was getting things from Crow. I slept with him last night because I had a button to spare. It was my currency to get the things I needed.

That was the only value they held now.

Crow returned from work right on cue. He walked through the front door at the same time every single day. He was punctual to the point of boredom. His movements and actions were predictable. I wasn’t sure how he managed to dodge his enemies when he had such a strict routine.

Instead of heading into his room to shower, he knocked on my bedroom door.

“Come in.” I sat on the couch near the fireplace. A book sat beside me on the cushion. I hadn’t started reading again since that horrible afternoon. All I wanted to do was sit still and stare at the wall.

He entered the room with an innate authority. His black suit was buttoned in the front, and the legs of his trousers framed his muscled thighs perfectly. There were a lot of sexy qualities that he possessed, but I was particularly attracted to the strength in his thighs.

He wore a blue tie, the kind of blue that reminded me of tropical waters. It wasn’t deep and dark like his suit. It was vibrant and beautiful. Only a stern man like him could pull it off and make it look intimidating. He made everything seem abundantly masculine. His mansion was styled with elegance and taste, and even that seemed manly.

He greeted me with a cold stare, annoyed from the second he walked through the door.

I hadn’t gotten in his way or pestered him, so I didn’t know what his problem was. “Yes?”

“Knock it off.”

All I was doing was sitting in my room peacefully. I hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch. If his employees didn’t know I was there, they wouldn’t know I existed. “Excuse me?”

“This pity party you’re throwing for yourself. Get over it already and move on.” He turned back to the door, having said everything he needed to say. His shoulders were tense with irritation, like he wanted to flip the chair over while I still sat in it.

“Wow.”

He turned around when he reached the door, his expression still ice-cold.

“I didn’t think you could be a bigger asshole. But I guess you can.” I stormed into my bathroom and locked the door so he couldn’t follow me. I turned on the water and stood underneath the showerhead. The warm water felt good against my skin, soothing the anger away—at least some of it.

***

Lars stepped into my bedroom. “His Grace would like you to join him for dinner.”

Not after the stunt he pulled earlier. “I’ll enjoy my dinner in here tonight. Thank you, Lars.”

He kept his hands behind his back as he stood in the open doorway.

If he didn’t leave, he had something else to say. “Yes?”

“His Grace said dinner would only be served in the dining room. If you would like to eat, you need to join him.”

“Then I’ll starve.” The choice was clear. I turned back to my book and silently excused him.

Lars shut the door, and his footsteps trailed away. A minute passed, and I knew he was in the dining room telling Crow what I had said. It was only a matter of time before Crow stormed up here and dragged me by the hair.

His quiet footsteps approached my door a moment later. Despite how lightly he approached me, I knew there was rage in every limb. Chaos would be burning in his eyes, and he would probably slap me across the face.

Pearl

Winter raged through New York City. A colossal force of nature, the snow caked against the skyscrapers and sprinkled the streets with icy kisses. The Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center still stood tall and proud, but it was quickly blanketed with a white sheet.

The tree stood in the living room, and a string of white lights had been wrapped around it. I always insisted on a real tree in the apartment. That pine smell from the great outdoors really brought the holidays to life. It left pine needles all over the floor and it was difficult to manage, but it was still worth it.

I held the ornament in my hand as I tried to find a place to put it. It was covered with sloppy red paint, and a picture was wedged in the center. It was Jacob when he was eight years old. He made it for a class project and took it when he moved out of his parents’ place.

Christmas was difficult for me to understand because I’d never truly celebrated it. I grew up in a foster home, and the one time I was adopted, my adoptive parents quickly took me back when they realized having another child was too much of a financial burden. It was just a few days before Christmas.

A knock sounded on the door, and my fingers almost released the ornament. If it crashed to the floor and shattered, I never would have been able to forgive myself. Jacob cherished his childhood. He had two loving parents who adored him and a sister he battled every chance he got.

I returned the ornament to the box before I opened the door. A man in a black leather jacket stood across the threshold. His long black hair was slicked with grease, and his bushy eyebrows made him formidable. The leather boots on his feet gleamed with melted snow from the sidewalk.

Like he owned the place, he stepped inside. “Where’s Jacob?”

“Whoa, hold on.” I placed my palm against his chest and pushed him back. “I didn’t invite you inside. So keep your ass across that line.” I tapped my toe against the metal strip that separated the hallway from my apartment.

His eyebrows furrowed even more.

“Now, how can I help you?” I didn’t know this guy, but he sure knew Jacob.

“I want to see Jacob.”

“He’s not here right now. Who are you?”

“He’s not here, my ass.” His accent was thick, possibly Italian. “I know he’s back there. Tell him to come out, or I’ll make him come out.”

“He’s really not here,” I snapped. “He’s at work. What’s this about?”

“It’s none of your concern.” He shot me a menacing look before he stepped away. “He better pay up. He can’t run forever.”

“Pay up what?” I stuck my head out so I could watch him walk away.

“Just tell him to pay what he owes, or he’ll pay with his life. It’s that simple.” He kept walking, not breaking his stride.

I walked back into the apartment and locked the door behind me. Jacob owed money? For what? Student loans? He told me he paid them off about a year ago.

Unless that was a lie.

***

Jacob walked inside an hour later than he usually did when he came home from work. He glanced at the tree but didn’t compliment the lights and the ornaments. He tossed his bag on the counter and immediately grabbed a beer from the fridge.

He didn’t acknowledge my existence. “Uh, hi?”

He twisted off the cap and downed half the beer in a single gulp.

Jacob and I hadn’t been the same in weeks. He didn’t kiss me when he came home from work. Sex was limited, and when it did happen, he got off quickly then rolled off me. While we lived together, he was never really there. Every time I questioned him, he told me everything was fine. “Hi.”

I was getting sick of his bullshit. I didn’t have a lot of patience with people when it came to bad attitudes. People needed to get over whatever issues they had and just move on. Whatever hardship he thought he lived through, mine was far worse. “Jacob, what’s your problem?”

In response, he took another drink of his beer.

“You’re like a zombie around here. We don’t have sex and—”

“I got fired.” He finished the beer before he dropped the empty bottle in the sink. It clanked loudly as it spun around until it came to a stop in the drain. He gripped the edge of the sink, his heavy coat covered with snow.

I shut my mouth when his words washed over me. It explained his closed off behavior the second he walked in the door, but it didn’t explain why he’d been so withdrawn all month. But now wasn’t the time to ask questions.

He grabbed another beer from the fridge and twisted off the cap. “I’m going to shower.” He downed all of it before he tossed it in the sink. This time, the bottle shattered, leaving broken pieces of glass everywhere. He left the kitchen and headed to the hallway.
