Torin is a trained assassin. He has never met a female who’s his match…until he is paired with Special Agent Sky’lar on Portex Three. Together the two of them must track a serial killer through space, but in the process someone is going to get Pierced…

Special Agent Sky’lar is a rare Pitch-Blood Kindred female. She has lived most of her life on Portex Three and never even seen one of her own kind since her mother died when she was young. Imagine her surprise when she walks into work at the Peace Keeper Station and is informed by her Captain that she has a new partner. Not only that, but her partner is a Kindred warrior and a male. Since females are dominant on Portex Three, this is a new and unwelcome development for Sky. How can a male possibly make a good partner?
Commander Torin works for the Kindred Elite Espionage group—he’s been trained as a spy and an assassin but right now he’s tracking a killer. A mysterious entity has been murdering Kindred Ambassadors and the rulers of planets where females are in charge. Zetta Prime and Yonnie Six have already been hit and Portex Three is third on the killer’s list. Torin knows that Sky doesn’t like working with him but he doesn’t give a damn—he’s willing to do whatever it takes to catch the murderer, even if it means baring parts of his soul that he’s kept secret, even from himself.

Now the killer is on the loose and instead of another Ambassador, Sky is in his sights. Will Torin be able to stop him before he kills again? And will Sky survive the killer’s murderous intentions? You’ll have to read this Enemies to Lovers, He Falls First, Warrior Heroine, HEA novel, Pierced, to find out!

***Author’s note: for warnings please see my Author’s warning inside the book. Thank you

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Now that the slow time bubble which had trapped the Eye of Tengu had moved aside, the scion of the Cruel Father was at last able to emerge. He seeped from his shell—the Eye which had opened at last—and under the air lock of the Hell’s Gate Station.

Anyone passing by would have seen an oily puddle of black slime and probably assumed that the hydraulics in the air lock were leaking. Luckily for the scion, this was a disused section of the station and there was no one to see him emerge from his prison and take his true form.

Slowly, the puddle of black ooze began to grow and change, forming into a vaguely humanoid shape. He—for of course a scion of the deity who hated women must be male—grew tall and thin with skin as pale as death. Webs of wrinkles edged his eyes, which were as black as the thin lips that formed on his semblance of a face. Teeth that ended in jagged points and a knife blade of a nose completed the scion’s ragged features.

Below, his skin was the same pale white—too pale, he thought. He needed to be able to hide in the shadows without alerting those who would soon be his victims. A moment of concentration, and his outer surface flowed again, forming a black leather body suit that encased his tall, thin frame—covering everything but his face.

Baleful black eyes gleamed red from inside the black hood which shielded his features from prying eyes. He would need to be unseen to do the work he had been meant for—harassing the Kindred and bringing low those females who had risen above their stations.

The Cruel Father might have cast him aside, believing he could never fulfill his purpose, but the scion knew better. He was an exact copy of his father’s darkest desires…his blackest hatred…his most evil dreams and twisted fantasies. Within him, was the essence of the Cruel Father and his longing to destroy all that was pure and light—to dirty and break everything true and good. And most of all, to grind females into the dust of oblivion.

“Father,” whispered the scion. “You may have discounted me, but I will prove myself.” As he spoke, black fisted hands uncurled, revealing talons, long and sharp and silver in the half-light of the Hell’s Gate air lock.

Silver now, but soon they would be red with blood. The scion did not intend to fail again—he would make the Cruel Father proud and prove his worth…

One bloody death at a time.

ONE

SKY

Sky’lar finished her morning thresh and set the heavy-bottomed mug in the washing bin with a thump. It was nearly time for her workday to begin and she had to get ready.

She worked as a Peace Keeper in the Ninth Division of Hx’lss—the capital city of Portex Three. Though she wasn’t native to the planet—having come there as a small child—she did quite well for herself.

Sky loved her job. She hummed to herself as she pulled on her uniform—a fine black mesh bodysuit that covered her from neck to ankles while still allowing her skin to breathe in the arid desert air. The Portexians—or Serpentines as they were most often called—didn’t drink much water. They didn’t need to, being reptilian. They got most of their moisture through the regular consumption of blood, which suited Sky just fine.

Standing in front of her viewer, she eyed her reflection critically. Her black mesh uniform with the 3-D Peace Keeper patch on the right side of her chest was neat and clean and her heavy black boots were polished to a high shine. Her ice blue eyes were fringed thickly with black lashes but she wore no cosmetics—it wouldn’t be right due to the serious nature of her job. She looked extremely professional except for one thing: her hair—the long, fibrous strands that grew on her head—was a mess, as usual.

Sky sighed as she gathered the black, silky stuff into a sleek ponytail that hung down to the small of her back. Hair was something she just had to deal with, being Mammalian in nature rather than Reptilian like most of the people around her. Many times she’d thought of just cutting or shaving the stuff off—it was such a pain to care for! But her mother, before she’d died when Sky was only nine, had made her promise never to cut it.

“It is considered beautiful, Sky—in the culture we came from,” she always said. “Someday you may find a man you want to mate with—to Bond with—and he will love your hair.”

So Sky didn’t cut her hair. Not because she wished to find a male to “Bond” with—the very idea was laughable. But in memory of her mother, she put up with the long, silky stuff and only trimmed it minimally when the ends became too ragged.
Mia and Severith are undercover, pretending to be married. But the cult they are infiltrating has some strange sexual practices. Will their partnership be blown to pieces? Only one thing is certain—someone is going to get…Punished.
Mia Deen is a strong, independent woman—she’s also a police detective in the Human Kindred Relations Department of the Tampa PD. Petite but curvy, Mia has worked hard to make a name for herself in a man’s world and she certainly has no secret sexual wishes to be dominated in any way.
Severith is Mia’s partner—he’s also a rare Dae’mon Kindred warrior. Seven feet tall, muscular, with red skin and horns, he’s a warrior to be reckoned with. But though the bad guys fall down at his feet in fear when they see “The Devil” coming, there’s one thing Sev can’t master—his intense attraction for his partner, Mia—an attraction which apparently is not returned.
All goes well until Mia and Sev are sent undercover to expose a cult. The PPP or Peaceful People of the Prophet have some very strange religious beliefs—the strangest being that a wife must submit unconditionally to her husband and he has the right to punish her sexually if she disobeys him.

Author’s Spice Note–this one has some kinks in it–just warning you. It’s not for the faint of heart!

***Please read the Author’s warning at the beginning of the book for triggers. Thank you

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

He went by many names…The Cruel Father…The Dark Father…Misogynist…Hater of Women…but the one female he hated the most was the Goddess—The Mother of All Life—who ruled the parallel universe alongside his own.

Both of them had created a race that was 95% male—the Kindred. But in the Cruel Father’s universe, they were a heartless lot, using women however they wanted and then discarding them like used tissues when they were finished. Or they had been that way—before the Kindred of the Goddess’s universe interfered.

The Kindred of her universe had crossed over into his own, infecting them with that most cursed emotion—love. And with love came caring and tenderness towards females that was the antithesis of everything the Cruel Father was.

He longed to punish them—to hurt the Goddess and her universe in any way he could. Yet his scion, who had been embedded in the Eye of Tengu, had failed in his mission to ruin them.

“I will choose another,” the Cruel Father muttered to himself. “I will find the lowest male I can and raise him high—high enough to bring the Kindred of the Goddess to their knees!”

But it was easier said than done. He had very limited influence in the Goddess’s universe—he couldn’t reach across the border and physically touch anyone himself. Still, he was not without resources and the Eye of Tengu was not the only artifact with miraculous properties which he had planted in the parallel universe he hated so.

His scion within the Eye might have failed him, but there was another, even stronger relic he knew he could rely on…one that, properly employed, would bring the Kindred to their knees…

Somewhere on Chakioun Prime, Chud Brumpkin was having a shitty day.

First, he’d been late for work as a janitor at the University of Higher Learning—which wasn’t his fault. The public transport tube had been late. Well, technically it had only been a few minutes late, but Chud had gotten a little distracted. It was all because of that pretty little bitch who got on at the Sandras Avenue stop.

She’d had light blue skin and silver hair like all his people but that wasn’t what caught Chud’s attention. She’d been wearing the latest Chakioun fashion—an ultra-purple shrink-wrap top that clung to her full, luscious breasts and even showed the sharp points of her nipples. With a display like that, was it any wonder Chud had missed his own stop and then had to catch another tube to ride back to the University where he worked? Really his lateness was her fault—the little bitch with the tight top and the big tits.

She’d distracted him and the worst thing was, Chud knew she wouldn’t give him the time of day if he tried to talk to her. Staring at her tits was as close as he’d ever get to that kind of female. She would think she was above him, just because he was nothing but a lowly janitor.

He’d seen the Health Restoration Academy patch on the arm of her outer-wrap—Miss Hoity-toity was no doubt studying to be a healer. She wouldn’t look twice at a skinny little guy like Chud, who was going prematurely bald and had patchy facial hair that wouldn’t grow in right because of the pockmarks on his face.

Uppity bitch! Chud had thought resentfully, even as he watched her full tits sway in time with the transport tube’s motions. Women shouldn’t be allowed to become healers in his opinion. Or any other profession outside the home—taking jobs away from men who rightfully deserved them—that’s what they were doing!

Of course, he himself was never going to be admitted into the Health Restoration Academy—his marks hadn’t even amounted to enough to let him graduate his secondary education class. But that was beside the point. He was sure he could have gotten a better job than being a lowly janitor if only there weren’t so many females taking jobs away from deserving, hardworking males.

Women shouldn’t be out in the workforce at all—they ought to be on their knees, all of them—serving men. That was the natural order of things. Cooking, cleaning the house, raising the children—if Chud had his way, he would create a society where that was all that females were allowed to do. Well, that and pleasing men. And if they did anything wrong—if they tried to get above their place and disrespected the males that were their masters, they’d be punished—harshly.

Such were the thoughts that occupied his mind as he made his belated way in to work. He’d been hoping to just sneak in by the side door of the History building, but his bitch of a supervisor, Professor Higgly, who oversaw the Antiquities section of the University’s collection, caught him coming in.

“Late again, Mr. Brumpkin?” she demanded, raising one silver eyebrow at him disapprovingly. “Honestly, I don’t know how you expect to retain employment here if you can’t manage to be on time!”

Its master, the Dark Father, had awakened his scion within…but now what? It floated in the void of the time-suck beneath Hell’s Gate station—trapped in a time so slow it might as well have been frozen solid. Why had the master awakened it, if there was nothing it could do to hinder or harm the Kindred, which was its only purpose for being?

“You are not frozen and you can still fulfill your purpose,” a dark, cold voice whispered to the scion. It was faint but filled with malice, coming as it did, from a different, parallel universe where the Dark Father held sway.

The eye blinked, its blood-red surface nictitating with infinite slowness in the time-suck which held it.

“What must I do, Father?” the scion within it asked.

“You have the power to rearrange this universe,” the Dark Father informed it. “I cannot, for the cursed Kindred Goddess has closed its borders to me. But you are within those borders—you are able to cause catastrophic damage to the race we hate.”

“But how?” the scion within the Eye demanded. “When I am trapped within this time vortex and I can barely move?”

“You must use what you have to work with,” the Dark Father growled. “Use the time itself. Bend it—manipulate it. Within the vortex you can reach either forward or backwards in this universe’s history. You have enough energy to alter one event—to change one detail in the Kindred’s timeline—pick one and use your power well!”

The Eye of Ten’gu blinked again, thinking, searching along the timeline as its Master had commanded. One event—it could use its limited power and the energy of the time surrounding it to change just one event in the Kindred’s history—what should that one event be?

How can I hurt them most? the scion wondered. What do they value the most and how can I take it from them?

Then, the scion saw it. The Eye narrowed, its bloody pupil focusing across the years, finding the one event it could alter that would change everything.

“Yes…good,” the Dark Father rumbled, seeing where his scion was focusing. “What the Kindred care most about are their brides. And the planet they call the most brides from is that insignificant little blue speck called ‘Earth.’”

“But what if they never came to Earth in the first place?” the scion within the Eye speculated. “What if the scout they sent to find out if the planet was hostile was incapacitated in some way?”

“Very good,” the Dark Father agreed. “If the Kindred had never came to Earth because they believed the inhabitants were hostile, they would not have been there to stop the invasion of the Scourge.”

“The Earth would have been destroyed—its inhabitants enslaved—and the Kindred would have been unable to call their brides.”

The Eye blinked, moving rapidly along the altered timeline it now envisioned. There was no other planet that was such an abundant source of brides which the Kindred—being 95% male—needed in order to survive as a species. If the Earth were ravaged and destroyed by the Scourge because the Kindred never came to fight them, they would eventually die out.

Two races had been saved when the scout the Kindred sent signaled that they ought to come to Earth. The humans of Earth had been saved because the Kindred arrived just in time to fight the Scourge invasion. And the Kindred themselves had been saved by the agreement with the grateful humans, who allowed them to call brides from among their population.

But what if those events had never happened? What if the scout never reported back—or it appeared that the humans had attacked or hurt it in some way? The Kindred wouldn’t seek brides from a hostile race, no matter how desperate they were. But how could such an event be engineered?

The scion within the Eye of Ten’gu searched carefully until at last it found what it was looking for—the perfect moment, the perfect event to set in motion a perfect storm of failure. By breaking one tiny thing, it could alter the entire Kindred timeline and ensure the ruination of both races at once.

The humans had a saying—“For want of a nail, the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe, the horse was lost. For want of a horse, the rider was lost. For want of a rider, the message was lost. For want of a message, the battle was lost. For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost—and all for the want of a horseshoe nail.”

The scion knew exactly where the nail was—the one thing that needed to fail and break in order to alter everything. It would be the first domino in a series that would end in a deadly cascade that kept the Kindred from ever going to Earth in the first place.

Reaching out across the years, the scion within the Eye used its one chance at destruction to good effect. It broke something tiny—so tiny it could not be seen by a human eye. Then it sat back, satisfied, to watch the events it had set in motion unfold.
Brides of the Kindred Book One—Claimed
Olivia Waterhouse has just graduated from nursing school and has her whole life ahead of her—until she gets drafted. Problem is, she isn’t being forced into the Army, she’s been chosen as a Kindred bride.
The Kindred are huge alien warriors—a race of genetic traders whose population is ninety-five percent male. After saving Earth from the threat of invasion they demand a reward—the right to find brides among the population. The chances of being chosen are about the same as those of winning the lottery—guess it’s just Liv’s lucky day.
Baird is a Beast Kindred who recently escaped imprisonment and torture at the hands of the malevolent Scourge. Through the torment and pain only one thing kept him sane—the thought of finding and claiming his bride—Olivia. His need to possess her is a burning intensity that threatens to consume them both.
Angry at having her future and her family taken away from her, Liv vows to fight back the only way she can—by resisting. She has one month on the Kindred Mothership with Baird—their claiming period. If she can keep from having bonding sex with him during that time, she can go home and get on with her life on Earth.
But Baird isn’t going to make it easy for her. Every week he is allowed to touch Liv more and more intimately and according to the contract she signed, she has to let him. She’s determined to resist him but his touch sets her on fire. And just as she thinks she knows what she wants, a twist of fate and an attack by the faceless Scourge AllFather changes everything…
Rows of identical townhouses, lit softly from within, lined the street which was overshadowed by huge old oak trees. A light evening shower had just passed and now the atmosphere was heavy with moisture. Tendrils of steam rose from the asphalt and the sweet scent of honeysuckle filled the air.

In number eleven at the end of the row a slender female figure moved in front of a large picture window—one of the selling points of the otherwise unremarkable houses. She was walking back and forth, placing objects on a table, or perhaps taking them away—maybe cleaning up after dinner. She moved with ease and grace as she did the mundane chore, completely unaware that she was being watched.

Across the road from the lighted window and the slender figure, two pairs of eyes looked on avidly as she moved. One set of eyes was a pale, piercing blue that was almost white and the other set was a warm amber-gold that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the face of a tiger.

Neither pair of eyes was human.

“Mine.” The low rumbling growl came from the owner of the amber eyes. He was tall, six foot seven at least, with shoulders so broad he would have to turn sidewise to go through most doorways, but he moved silently, with a feral grace that belied his muscular physique. Dark stubble covered his cheeks and chin and matched the thick black hair on his head.

“Not yet, Baird,” the one beside him cautioned. He was as tall as his friend and just as muscular but he had short, spiky blond hair that complimented his pale blue eyes.

“Can’t wait much longer.” Long, strong fingers curled into a fist as though the amber-eyed male could grasp the slender figure in his hand and hold her through sheer force of will. “Been dreaming about her every night, Sylvan. I ache for her.”

“What does she look like?” There was genuine curiosity in the question. Though Baird had never seen her outside his dreams, Sylvan had no doubt he could describe his chosen female to the last detail.

“So fuckin’ beautiful it hurts to look at her. Yellow hair like yours but longer—more golden. And her eyes…” Baird shook his head. “Like jewels. A pale grey that’s almost silver.”

“You find these human women appealing then?”

“Only her—she’s the only one I can see.” The amber eyes stared hungrily across the road. “I need her soon. Need to be with her. In her.”

“You’re sure she’s the one?” Sylvan stared doubtfully at the woman silhouetted in the window. She was humming softly to herself but despite the distance and the pane of glass between them he could hear her perfectly and knew Baird could too. As attuned as his half brother was to this human female, he could probably hear her heartbeat even from across the street.

“I know she’s the one.” There wasn’t a shred of doubt in the deep, rumbling voice. “Didn’t I tell you we’ve been dream-sharing? And her scent…” He inhaled deeply and his dark gold eyes were suddenly half-lidded with desire. “It’s her all right and she’s ripe for bonding. I want her.”

“I know you do, but Baird…” The other male shifted from foot to foot uneasily. “You haven’t been back that long—only three days and it’s a miracle you escaped alive. Don’t you think it might be a good idea to wait a while? To take some time to recover?”

“Waited long enough,” was the rumbling reply. “Six months in that hell hole and the only thing keeping me alive and sane were the dreams I had of her. I won’t wait any longer—she’s mine, whether she knows it yet or not.”

“You’ll scare her,” his half-brother objected. “Human women are frightened enough of us as it is.”

“I won’t hurt her. Just need to take her—bond her.” Unconsciously, he took a step toward the lighted window but his half-brother put a restraining hand on his broad shoulder.

“Wait.” The other male’s voice was soothing. “Just wait until they serve the papers. One more night and she’s yours but you can’t have her now—not without violating the contract.”

A low, frustrated growl was his answer as the thick muscles of Baird’s upper arms bunched with tension.

“Come on.” The one called Sylvan tugged his half brother gently away from the lighted window. “If you stay here you’ll do something you regret. Remember, just one more night.”

The other male stood like a rock for a moment despite his brother’s tugging. Then, reluctantly, he allowed himself to be led away. He cast one last possessive glance over his shoulder at the figure in the window.

“Mine,” he repeated with unshakable certainty. “Mine whether you know it or not, Lilenta. And tomorrow I claim you.”

Chapter One

“Bad dreams again last night?”

Olivia Waterhouse jerked at the sound of her twin sister’s voice and then went back to staring at the kitchen table. “Uh, not so much,” she lied and tried to smile.

His universe had been corrupted. His Kindred, the Kru’ell Ones, had been tainted by love…by compassion…by tenderness and mercy. All those womanly emotions he so despised and had taught his children to despise as well.

He had created the Kru’ell Ones to rule over females. To take them as concubines to feed their emotional appetites and then discard them, as easily as a man drops a used tissue. But now, what did he see when he looked down upon them?

“They have taken mates,” he growled to himself, glaring with his all-seeing eye upon the gray-green version of Earth which resided in his universe. The new Overlord, Kane, had taught the other Kru’ell Ones to revere females and treat them with respect. He had purged the hate from their hearts and fostered love instead. He had taught them to take females as mates instead of disposable concubines and to form a permanent bond with them.

It was unbearable! And the Cruel Father knew exactly who to blame.

“Mother of All Life,” he growled to himself, thinking of the Goddess who was his counterpart in the parallel universe which ran along side his own. She had done this thing. She had interfered in his territory and had brought her disgusting attributes of love and fidelity, spreading goodness and peace wherever she went like a pestilence.

The Cruel Father raged to himself. How dare she meddle in the affairs of his ‘verse? How dare she bring her sickening love and kindness into his territory?

And how could he repay her deed in kind?

Luckily, the Mother of All Life was not the only one who had a stronghold in the enemy’s territory. Long ago the Cruel Father had waged war across the dimensional divide with the female deity. He had been forced back, but not before he had left a small token—a scion of himself—within her domain.

Of course, the Goddess had instructed the ancient First Kindred to hide the relic—the Eye of Ten’gu they had called it. And so they had buried it deep, hiding it in the far recesses of their universe on a planet so icy and inhospitable they were certain no one would ever find and awaken it.

The Cruel Father reached across the divide, using just a tendril of his power— not enough to sound any alarms—and touched the Eye. For millennia it had lain dormant, his scion sleeping in endless, dreamless slumber.

“Awake,” the Cruel Father called to it. “Awake and claim your birthright. Decimate the Goddess’s ‘verse as she has ruined mine.”

He felt the Eye tremble…perceived that his scion was rising from the sleep which had claimed him when the First Kindred had buried the relic so long ago.

It would take some time for his scion to come fully awake—some time before the Eye opened and understood what he must do. But the Cruel Father could wait. After all, was revenge not sweetest when it took some time in coming?

“You will be sorry, Mother of All Life,” he growled to himself. “I will teach you not to meddle in my domain. You have turned my own Kindred into sniveling female-lovers like your own. We will see how well you like it when your own children are corrupted by my darkness. When the Eye of Ten’gu opens, your ‘verse will know pain and discord as it never has before.”

This he vowed. And then he sat back to watch as the events he had set in motion began, slowly but inexorably, to unfold…

Far from the Cruel Father’s universe, on First World, Nadiah woke from the dream with a gasp of fright.

“The Cruel Father…the Eye…the Eye must not open! It must not open!” she cried.

“What?” Rast, the Challa of First World, the home planet of the Kindred, sat up in bed beside his mate. In the dim light of their bedchamber, he saw that Nadiah’s blue-green eyes were wide with panic.

“The Eye…” She was nearly panting with fright. “The Eye is waking but it must not open!”

Another male might have shaken his mate to bring her out of what appeared to be hysteria but Rast had a better solution than that. He spread his great, feathery wings—the ones that had grown when he had proven that he was truly meant to be the Challa of the Kindred home world—and enfolded his wife in them.

Nadiah came to him at once and Rast could feel her trembling against his broad chest as he poured healing warmth into her through the enfolding feathers.

“What is it, sweetheart?” he murmured, stroking her golden hair and holding her close, trying to comfort her. “What’s wrong? You must have had a nightmare.”

“N-not a n-nightmare.” Nadiah’s teeth were still chattering in fright. Rast held her tighter, disturbed. He had never seen his mate so upset before.

“If it wasn’t a nightmare then what was it?” he asked gently.
A Kindred thief who longs for a female to love... An abandoned woman, trying to start again... When the two of them are thrown together, sparks fly. But what happens when Vicky has to pretend she's a professor
Who teaches sexual techniques to younger men? You'll have to read Stealing Her Heart to find out.
Vicky Erickson is having a lousy Valentine’s Day. First the man she met on the dating app stood her up, then she ripped the expensive dress she was going to return. What else could go wrong?
How about having hot Kindred thief run into the bar and beg her to pretend she’s his date?
At first it seems like fun and Vicky is willing to play along. But things get dangerous when the lizard-like aliens he stole from come searching for him…and find her instead.
Chain is an M-Switch Kindred and a thief. His ability to “snatch” another male’s body for a limited time helps him pull off jobs no one else can handle—but it also makes him a pariah to the rest of Kindred society. No female would ever want to bond with an M-Switch or “Snatcher” as the other Kindred call them, so he has given up on finding love and concentrates on his craft. What he doesn't guess is that his craft will lead him to love...in a round-about way.
After landing Vicky in a heap of trouble with the lizard-like Varians he stole from, he takes her with him on his next "job" to keep her safe. But the job happens to be located on a planet where women teach men exactly how they like to be pleased and Vicky has to pose as a sex professor. Can she rise to the occasion and come up with a curriculum of her own? And more importantly, can Chain keep his head while he's...Stealing Her Heart?
**Bonus Content: A deleted chapter from Guarding the Goddess you'll want to read if you're a chewchie fan!
She had no idea how she had gotten it, but there it was, staring at her like a bad omen.

The Teri Jon was a sexy red wrap dress and Vicky had gotten it at Saks especially for tonight—for her Valentine’s date. It hadn’t been on sale, either. In fact, it had cost an ungodly amount—almost five hundred dollars—which she could ill afford on her high school teacher’s salary. But it had looked so good and made her feel so sexy, she’d decided to do something she normally wouldn’t—get the dress, wear it once, and then return it the next day.

No returning it now, whispered a little voice in the back of her head as she examined the rip. Nope, no way—absolutely not. You just blew your savings on something you couldn’t afford in the first place. Now what are you going to do the next time the Civic breaks down or the AC goes out?

Vicky didn’t have answers for those questions—all she knew was that she’d paid an awful lot to look nice and the effort had been completely wasted. Her date hadn’t even showed.

“Stupid app,” she muttered, staring resentfully down at her phone. “Should have known trying to start dating again at my age wouldn’t work.” Not after over twenty years of being with the same man, anyway.

It had been her older daughter Jodi’s idea to get her an account on Second Time Around, the premier dating app for divorced people in their forties and fifties.

“Dad’s moving on, Mom—you should too,” she’d said when Vicky had admitted to being lonely.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time. It had been almost a year since her youngest daughter, Melinda, had gone off to college and Vicky’s husband of twenty-six years had announced that he was leaving.

In fact, both events had happened on the very same day. Vicky had still had tears in her eyes from seeing her baby off to USF when Kevin had announced that he’d “had enough of this shit” and he was leaving immediately.

“He already had his bags packed,” Vicky murmured to herself, taking another sip of her daiquiri. “Couldn’t wait to get away.”

As it turned out, her ex had only been waiting until both kids were gone so he couldn’t be forced to pay any kind of child support. And it further turned out that he’d been having an affair with his secretary for the past three years. And to cap off the sad, stereotypical story of her husband’s infidelity, his secretary—who was now his new wife—was pregnant.

So Kevin was starting all over again while Vicky was just left there in the dust, middle aged and alone with no one to love her and no one left to love—at least, no one at home, since all her chicks had flown the nest.

Oh, stop being so maudlin, Vicky scolded herself mentally. You’re not usually like this—it must be the alcohol talking.

Well, that and the fact that she’d been stood up on Valentine’s Day. Which sucked—honestly, there was no way around it.

The worst thing was, Vicky was fairly certain she’d spotted Ted—the man she was supposed to meet—earlier in the crowded front of the bar. She’d seen a man who seemed to match his picture—well, sort of, since he was a lot shorter than the 6’2 he’d listed and had a beer belly and was balding. But all the same, he’d looked like the photo on the app.

Vicky had seen him looking—scanning the bar for the woman in the red dress. She’d felt so sexy earlier, messaging him with that little bit of information. “I’ll be the one with a silver streak in her hair and a low-cut red dress,” she’d typed and had felt a tingling between her thighs she hadn’t felt in years.

She and Kevin had been in a sexless marriage for the last five years together and tonight she’d imagined she might finally have a little fun for the first time in ages. So she had waved at Ted—or the man she thought was Ted—trying to catch his eye behind the thick glasses he wore.

Ted—if it had been Ted—had sized her up with a quick up and down glance, then turned and headed right back out of the bar. He hadn’t waved back, or come up to give any kind of explanation, or anything. He just left—as though what he saw when he looked at Vicky wasn’t enough to tempt him—wasn’t even enough to warrant any common courtesy.

Vicky had tried to tell herself it was the wrong guy, that it hadn’t been her date at all that she’d seen looking at her and leaving. But the minutes had ticked by and Ted never showed. He never even messaged her on the app to let her know he wasn’t coming or answered the short message she’d sent, asking if she was at the right place. (She knew she was—she’d double checked twice.)
