Someone is in my apartment.

I hear them moving around in the kitchen, and then I hear footsteps coming toward the bedroom. The clock tells me it is three minutes past three in the morning. Nobody should be here. My lips part to call out to ask who it is, but there is an older kind of fear that stops me from making any noise. I am frozen, my fingers clutching the coverlet, my breath short and shallow.

The steps are drawing closer. Closer. I want to believe this is a nightmare, but I am wide awake and completely helpless.

The door to my bedroom opens, and a man I have never met or seen before enters. He’s not wearing a face covering, and I can see his features cast in the light from the lounge. He has turned all the lights on, and now he flicks my bedroom light on too.

He is tall and he is broad and he has a sort of vicious expression on his face that would frighten me even if he wasn’t in my bedroom at three in the morning. Worse still, he is holding a knife. Not a kitchen knife. Not a machete. It is a thin rapier-type knife, a ceremonial blade which I am certain is just as sharp as any other.

He comes toward me without speaking. I have managed to get out of bed, but I would have to go past him to escape, and that is not going to happen.

I scream for help, but I know none will come. There’s no hope. My neighbors are old and deaf. I chose this building because it was quiet, not because it had good security. I never thought anything like this would happen to me. I’m not a flashy sort of girl. I’m the kind nobody notices. So I never expected to be noticed. I certainly never expected to be accosted by a knife-wielding maniac in my own home.

He grabs me, and the world goes into slow motion. I feel the vise-like grip of his massive hand on my wrist, spinning me around back toward the bed. Everything is so slow, but I don’t have time to think. All I can do is watch as my life is taken away. He releases my wrist and lunges for my neck. He is trying to pin me down by my throat. He doesn’t just want to stab me. He wants to stab me in a very specific way.

I am fighting him with everything I have. He’s much stronger, but I am battling for my life and that means I am using every bit of my strength to do that, even the parts you don’t usually have access to, desperate reserves of power drawn from every one of my cells.

It’s not enough to stop him.

The tip of the knife scratches my arm, biting deep. Blood starts to flow, and my panic rises. He’s going to kill me, and there’s nothing I can do.

“Stop wasting the blood!”

He speaks for the first time in a predictably accented voice, and the order is terrifying. It’s not enough that he stabbed me. He also seems inconvenienced by the way I am bleeding. He wants me to be more orderly about it, stereotypically German.

“Hey! Asshole!”

Suddenly there’s a second man in my apartment. This one has an American accent. There has never been one man in my apartment before, and now there are two. My attacker turns his head just in time to receive tattooed knuckles directly to his jaw. There’s a crunch as his neck snaps backward and the rest of his body follows inexorably.

The American has blue hair and the expression of someone who is very much enjoying what he is doing, which is beating the hell out of my attacker. His muscular arms are pumping back and forth with harsh blows, hands like tattooed hammers inflicting massive damage on the face and body of my assailant.

The Blood Brotherhood is a secret cabal of powerful priests and laymen who have dedicated their lives to the eradication of evil on Earth. I was brought into the Brotherhood because of my fearsome powers and my talent for finding anything and anyone, no matter where they might roam. I have slain giants. I have broken the wills of tyrants. I have saved families from the ravages of famine, war, and poverty. I do not mention this out of any sense of ego. I mention it because right now, in my hallowed role as a member of the clandestine Blood Brotherhood, I am staring at a bucket. It is not even a special bucket. It is just a slightly rusty old metal bucket.

To be fair, that is what we are all doing. Myself. Bryn, the somewhat disputed leader of the Blood Brotherhood. Crichton, the demon butler. Mrs Crocombe, the demon cook. And of course, Bryn’s wife, Nina, the vessel of angel blood. There is more dark magic and angelic power in this room than in the entirety of the vale. There is great education too, though that is not currently conscious. Steven, keeper of ancient knowledge, snores in an armchair in the corner.

You’d be forgiven for thinking we’re engaging in some arcane ritual, but this could not be more mundane.

Plunk

Plunk

Plunk

Water drips into the bucket steadily, in an easy to interpret and predictable rhythm. It’s coming from the roof and through the ceiling. It should not be doing either of those things.

The reason for the bucket is complicated and begins over a thousand years ago. Direview Abbey was built in the thirteenth century, and it is showing its age. The roof was replaced around sixty-six years ago. It is time it was replaced again.

“A million pounds,” Bryn says. “How can anything possibly cost a million pounds?”

He already knows, because the contractor already told him. These historically listed buildings can’t just be fixed with any old materials. They’ve got to match the original as best as possible. That means craftsmen have to be involved, real craftsmen with degrees in history, not just builders. Then there’s the materials. And inflation. And a whole lot of problems none of us can solve by stabbing something, which would be our strong preference.

“The bucket is working,” I say. “Could buy a lot of buckets for a million pounds.”

“If we’re broke,” Nina interjects. “Could we sell some of my blood? I hear that fetches a high price?”

Bryn refuses that idea outright. “Only among those who practice dark arts. We are trying to project a legitimate front. One that can produce tax records.”

“But you’re a priest, and churches are tax exempt.”

“That’s… that’s not how it works. We still have to produce evidence of income, or churches would simply become unquestionable money laundering venues.”

“Is that not what they are now?”

“No.”

“You’re so naive sometimes.” She rolls her eyes.

Nina is a lot younger than her husband, and so therefore still imagines she knows everything. It’s nice to see her holding onto some of her innocence after all she has been through.

“This place is like a museum. What if we open it to the public?” Bryn makes the suggestion, surprising everybody with what a terrible idea that is for so very many reasons.

“Why don’t we open the secret and sacred seat of our Brotherhood to the grubby-fingered public?” Crichton is the first to be overtly offended. He does not like people in general. He finds the general public almost completely intolerable.

“No. I think this is the best idea,” Bryn insists, having heard no other ideas whatsoever. “We’ll open the gardens and the kitchen to the public in an effort to make some funds to redo the roof. We’ll display a few artifacts of interest and sell cotton candy. I can announce it to the congregation, and we can use the internet to attract interest from further afield, so Nina informs me. Thor, are you in?”

“Sure,” I say, wanting to be a team player. “Why not.”

One Sunday later…

Why not? So many reasons why not, as it turns out. We have erected little stalls in the garden to display our exhibits, which makes me feel like I should have pigtails and a lemonade stand. There is something all too humbling about presenting these parts of ourselves. The visitors have no idea that they are being shown some of the most priceless and arcane objects in existence. Some of them seem to think that this is a fete, and the items are for sale. Other people keep trying to buy raffle tickets. We are a secret brotherhood and this was not a good idea. Bryn is trying far too hard to be normal. I know he wants to do that for Nina, but we have gone too far.

I end up standing at a stall with my most treasured and priceless possession before me, being largely ignored by people who keep asking for more of Mrs Crocombe’s hot chips and battered fish.
Once, I took vows. Now I’ve broken every commandment, but I do not fear Hell, because Hell is here on earth.
I protect the weak. I punish the wicked. And I slay demons. I do my work alone…until fate steps in.
Now I’m legal guardian to the daughter of the one who got away.
But she’s no child. She’s headstrong and spoiled…and mesmerizing. Addictive. Angelic. Pure temptation.
Claiming her is against every tenet, commandment, and moral law above and below. But when I am with her, nothing else matters.
Chain link gates shudder to a close behind me with a surprisingly tinny clang. Aside from the wire and the lights and the general accoutrements one requires to keep humans captive, you’d never know this place was a lockup. I didn’t know it was one. The building itself is gothic and ominous and looks like a castle. I guess it's more like a dungeon for bad girls.

I swear I’m not a bad girl. I've just been mistaken for one.

In front of Her Majesty’s Prison Holloway, just outside London, a man in a bowler hat and a tight suit is waiting for me. I know he’s waiting for me because he has a gold-edged placard with my name printed carefully on it, as if he’s picking me up from the airport. I wish he had been waiting for me when I arrived at the airport. It would have been a lot better than the two squad cars full of police that were there instead.

It’s my brother’s fault. Jonah has been wild ever since our parents passed away when we were both eleven. He never got over it. Neither did I, but I’m a quiet kind of crazy. Jonah’s a loud kind of maniac crazy. When I see him again, there’s going to be hell to pay.

First things first, I am getting into this car and I am getting the hell out of dodge.

The man picking me up doesn’t match the mental picture of the person I thought would be taking charge of us. The judge handed down a sentence I know we were lucky to get. Jonah and I are technically British citizens because our mom was, and our bio dad was too. But we were born and raised in America. So I was kind of expecting to be deported back to the States. Then some old friend of the family, a priest, petitioned the judge to have us released into his custody as a kind of probation deal, and for some reason the judge agreed. I am not asking too many questions. I am just thrilled there’s a deal that gets me out from behind bars.

But back to the man with the car. He’s of an indeterminate age. I don't know what color his hair is, or if he even has any, but I am going to guess that it is close-cropped and brown. His features are neat, compact, and sort of snotty, like he was made to look down his nose at others.

“Hi,” I say, shouldering my belongings that have been ever so kindly stuffed into a trash bag for me. “I’m Nina.”

He doesn’t smile as he inclines his head ever so slightly, then gestures to the back of a vehicle.

“Hello, Miss. My name is Crichton.”

“You don’t look like a priest,” I say.

Jonah's already in the front seat. He hasn’t even looked up from his phone. It takes all my self-control not to bang on his window and call him what the British love to call one another when they’re angry, and the Australians like to call one another when they're happy: cunt.

“That’s because I am a butler.”

“Hm?”

“I don't look like a priest because I am a butler,” he repeats.

“What kind of a priest has a butler?”

“A busy one,” he says. “Come along, gather your things. The master will want us home before nightfall.”

“The master,” I repeat, laughing. The butler doesn't laugh. He looks at me with that staunch glare that suggests he will cut a bitch if that bitch doesn’t get in the car.

“I’m coming. I’m coming,” I assure him twice.

Crichton opens the door for me. That’s nice, though lots of people have been opening doors for me the last few days. Most of them because they were locked with keys only they had. I get in the back seat because that's the only seat to take. Jonah’s gotten shotgun already, of course.
