From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby…
Fallon McCarthy has climbed the corporate ladder. She’s had the office with the view, the staff, and the plaque on her door. The unexpected loss of her grandmother taught her that there’s more to life than meetings and conference calls, so she quit, and is happy to be a nomad, checking off items on her bucket list as she takes jobs teaching yoga in each place she lands in. She’s happy being free, and has no interest in being tied down.
When Noah King gets the call that an eagle has been injured, he’s not expecting to find a beautiful stranger standing vigil when he arrives. Rehabilitating birds of prey is Noah’s passion, it’s what he lives for, and he doesn’t have time for a nosy woman who’s suddenly taken an interest in Spread Your Wings sanctuary.
But Fallon’s gentle nature, and the way she makes him laugh, and feel again draws him in. When it comes time for Fallon to move on, will Noah’s love be enough for her to stay, or will he have to find the strength to let her fly?

“Namaste,” my class repeats. Some of them jump up immediately to get on with their days, and some sit quietly for a few more minutes.

Summer yoga is my favorite. I get to teach classes every morning at the Lodge on the lake, for tourists and locals alike. Some days, we’re overflowing with newcomers. And some days, like today, it’s mostly familiar faces.

The sun rises early in this part of the world during the summer months, so a start time of seven a.m. is perfect to get the blood moving through our veins, outside in the fresh air with the lake shimmering behind us.

“Sorry I came rushing in late, Fallon,” Nina Wolfe says with a smile. She’s rolling her mat. “I can’t believe I overslept.”

“No worries,” I reply. “It happens to all of us. I’m just glad you made it.”

She sighs and walks over to me, her mat slung over her shoulder. Nina is a pretty blond woman with an athletic body and a happy smile. She moved to Cunningham Falls, Montana, just a few months ago to be closer to her brother.

Who happens to be Christian Wolfe, the hottest Hollywood actor in the world.

Of course, he’s married to another client of mine, Jenna.

“How long have you lived here, Fallon?” Nina asks.

“Oh goodness, it must be almost two years now.” I blink rapidly, realizing that this is the longest I’ve stayed in one place in more than five years. “Wow, time flies.”

“Was it hard for you to feel like you fit in? To make friends? I mean, I have Christian and Jenna, and I have acquaintances, of course, but—”

“I get it,” I say, nodding. “Small-town life is different. There’s not a lot of people here, and it feels like there are a lot of cliques.”

“Yes,” she says with a relieved nod of her own. “And most everyone I know is originally from here, so they have that network in place. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t going crazy.”

“You’re not,” I assure her and pat her shoulder. “And it does get easier. You’ll recognize faces and make friends.”

I frown as I think about my good friend, Penny, who recently moved to Seaside, Oregon. I miss her.

“Why don’t we go get some drinks or coffee or something sometime?” she asks. “I’ve been coming to your class for months. We’re friends, right?”

“Sure.” I reach into my bag and pull out a card. “My cell is on here. Just text me, and we’ll set it up.”

“Awesome.” Nina grins and takes a step back. “I also might have some professional things to discuss with you. Pick your brain.”

“I’m always happy to have my brain plucked.” I wink and sling my bag over my shoulder, walking toward my car. “Have a good day, Nina.”

“See you!”

I climb into my Jeep and drive toward my house, which is just a couple of miles away. Sometimes I walk to class, but I ran late this morning.

And I admit, I like the feeling of the sun beating down on me, the wind blowing through the Jeep as I drive.

After the long Montana winter, summer is just what the doctor ordered.

I’ve just stepped through my front door when my phone rings. I grin as I answer.

“Hey there.”

“Hi yourself.” Claire, my friend from back home yawns in my ear. “Whatcha doing?”

“Just got home from class,” I reply as I brew some tea. “It sounds like you just woke up.”

“I did.” I can hear the smile in her voice.

“Does that mean someone just left?”

“He left a while ago,” she says. “And I don’t think I’ll be seeing him again.”

“What’s wrong with this one?” I carry my tea out to my back patio and sit at my outdoor dining table. This spot is what sold me on renting this house. The trees and bushes are in bloom, making it feel like a magical garden.

“He moans weird,” she says, making me laugh. “Like an old man bending over to put on his socks.”

“Not sexy,” I agree.

“Too bad, too. He had a nice body. Ah well, there are about a billion more out there.”

“With nice bodies? Maybe not a billion.”

“You’re right. Are you dating a hot cowboy yet?”

I grin and trace the Drips & Sips logo on my mug. “No. It’s a small town, Claire. Not a lot to choose from.”

“So when are you going to move on to the next place? Or come home?”

I sigh, thinking it over. I don’t think I’ll ever move back to Chicago. Now that my grandma’s gone, I don’t have any family there, and Claire is my only tie to the city. I’ve been roaming around the country, living in my bucket list towns for the past five-plus years.

“I like it here,” I reply.

“You’ve been there longer than the others.”

“I know. I just realized this morning that it’s been almost two years. I like the community. I’m making friends. Although, Penny just moved away.”
Max Hull left Cunningham Falls a long time ago. Thanks to his killer instincts and business smarts, he’s come back to town richer than anyone’s wildest imagination. Now he’s closer to his family, living in his dream home, and at the top of his career—it sure looks like he has it all. All but one thing. And she’s not interested.
Willa Monroe and Max were childhood sweethearts. She daydreamed about their wedding day and named their children, but Max’s dreams were bigger than her. After high school, he left her behind without another word. Now, Willa is a single mother and a successful business owner, and the heartbreak of losing Max was a very long time ago.
She’s moved on. But when he walks into her shop and back into her life, suddenly it feels like no time has passed at all. He’s as handsome as ever, and more charming than she remembered. Once he makes friends with her son and turns his attention on her, how long will she be able to resist him?
And does she really want to? Sometimes you do get a second chance at first love.

The worst possible thing that can happen to a person has happened to me, and I’m only twenty-two years old.

I don’t feel the bitter Montana cold. I don’t hear the words the minister whose name I only learned yesterday is saying. I’m numb, staring straight ahead at the rich mahogany that I insisted on.

If he’s going to be in there for the rest of eternity, I want it to be nice, even if I can’t afford it.

I’ll figure it out.

My mom asked me last night why we didn’t have life insurance, and I just laughed. For Christ’s sake, Debbie, what twenty-two-year-olds do you know with life insurance?

I feel my lips tip up now at the thought, still staring at the gleaming wood in the sunlight, and hear, “Amen.”

There’s shuffling around me. I’m hugged, patted, and people make sympathetic noises.

I don’t care.

“Willa.”

I’ve been talked around for the past four days. I scowl as I walk to the casket and lay my hand on the cold wood. How is it possible that just four days ago he was here? Warm and whole, his strong arms wrapped around me, and now he’s just…gone.

I’m a widow at twenty-two.

“Willa.”

It’s louder this time, which means I’m required to answer. I glance around, surprised to find that aside from Max Hull, I’m alone. Cars pull away, and the cemetery workers huddle about thirty yards away, trying to stay warm.

“Hey,” Max says as he moves closer to me, but I shake my head, warning him to stay back. Max knows me well, maybe better than anyone besides Cary, but Cary’s gone now, so Max knows me the best, and he understands that I can’t be touched. He holds his hands up in surrender. “Willa, I just wanted to say—”

“I don’t care,” I interrupt him and turn my eyes back to Cary’s casket. The flowers on top are red roses. The baby in my belly kicks and I rub my hand over the spot, reminded that I have to pull it together for this little one.

“I’m sorry,” he says, but I shake my head.

“Go away, Max.”

“Willa.”

I sigh and turn to look at him. God, he’s handsome. He’s the most handsome boy I’ve ever known.

And he left me without looking back. Left Cary, his best friend in the world.

“You’ve never been good at listening to me, Max, so I’m going to make this crystal-clear. I don’t give a shit that you’re sorry. You took him skiing, and you let him fall in that tree well. If you hadn’t come to town five years after leaving it, my husband would be alive right now. So, no, I don’t want to hear it. Go away.” I push my finger into his chest, driving my point home. “I don’t want anything to do with you.”

He clenches his jaw, and his nostrils flare, but he doesn’t argue. He just nods once, turns on his heel, and walks away, and I’m finally alone with my husband.

“I’m so damn mad,” I whisper, shaking my head and looking back at the expensive wood, the flowers, and the photo of my man sitting in front. “I’m pissed at you, Cary Monroe. You told me you’d never leave.”

For the first time since the phone call I never thought I’d receive, I feel tears threaten, and I give in to them.

“Everyone leaves,” I mutter as the first drop splashes down my cheek. “First Grandpa, then Max.” I swipe at my wet face. “Then Daddy. But you were always there, holding my hand. Smiling. ‘It’s gonna be okay, Wills,’ you said. ‘I’m not going anywhere.’”

I sniff and shake my head.

“You fucking lied to me, Cary. And I’m so mad at you. I would open this expensive-as-hell casket and slap your face if I could.”

I eye it, considering it.

“You know what I hate the most? That when Max picked you up that morning, I was irritated with you then, too. Because I wanted you to stay home and put the crib together, and you said you’d do it that afternoon. You’d have Max help.”

A sob escapes.

“But now, you won’t do that. And our son won’t ever know you.” I rub my belly again, comforted by the movement of the tiny child in my womb. “He won’t know how funny you were, or how good it feels when you hold him.”

I swallow hard and take a deep breath, trying to get myself under control.

“Actually, that’s not true. He’ll know you because I’ll tell him about you. But it won’t be the same.” I lay my hand on the casket again. “It won’t be the same at all. How am I supposed to do this without you?”

Chapter One

~Willa~

“MOM!” ALEXANDER CARY MONROE, the love and light of my life, squirms in excitement as I try to get his shirt buttoned up. Winter means it’s time for flannel, and flannel has buttons, and my eight-year-old doesn’t stand still for long. “Mom. Mom. Mom.”

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby comes a new story in her Big Sky series…
Brooke’s Blooms has taken Cunningham Falls by surprise. The beautiful, innovative flower shop is trendy, with not only gorgeous flower arrangements, but also fun gifts for any occasion. This store is Brooke Henderson’s deepest joy, and it means everything to her, which shows in how completely she and her little shop have been embraced by the small community of Cunningham Falls.
So, when her landlord dies and Brody Chabot saunters through her door, announcing that the building has been sold, and will soon be demolished, Brooke knows that she’s in for the fight of her life. But she hasn’t gotten this far by sitting back and quietly doing what she’s told. Hustle is Brooke’s middle name, and she has no intention of losing this fight, no matter how tempting Brody’s smile -- and body -- is.
**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

I studied philosophy, poetry, history, the occult, and

the art and science of love and magic. I had a vast

library at my father’s home and collected thousands

of volumes of fantastic tales.

I learned all about ancient races and bygone

times. About myths and legends and dreams of all

people through the millennium. And the more I read

the stronger my imagination grew until I discovered

that I was able to travel into the stories... to actually

become part of them.

I wish I could say that I listened to my teacher

and respected my gift, as I ought to have. If I had, I

would not be telling you this tale now.

But I was foolhardy and confused, showing off

with bravery.

One afternoon, curious about the myth of the

Arabian Nights, I traveled back to ancient Persia to

see for myself if it was true that every day Shahryar

(Persian: شهريار, “king”) married a new virgin, and then

sent yesterday's wife to be beheaded. It was written

and I had read, that by the time he met Scheherazade,

the vizier's daughter, he’d killed one thousand

women.

Something went wrong with my efforts. I arrived

in the midst of the story and somehow exchanged

places with Scheherazade – a phenomena that had

never occurred before and that still to this day, I

cannot explain.

Now I am trapped in that ancient past. I have

taken on Scheherazade’s life and the only way I can

protect myself and stay alive is to do what she did to

protect herself and stay alive.

Every night the King calls for me and listens as I spin tales.

And when the evening ends and dawn breaks, I stop at a

point that leaves him breathless and yearning for more.

And so the King spares my life for one more day, so that

he might hear the rest of my dark tale.

As soon as I finish a story... I begin a new

one... like the one that you, dear reader, have before

you now.

Prologue

~Brody~

My dad is an asshole. He’s yelled and thrown fits my whole life. Whether he tried to scare me, or was just being a massive jerk, doesn’t matter.

He’s a dick.

But last night, he hit me for the first time. Like, full-out hit me because he said I’m a man now, and I can take it.

And I fucking hate him.

I’m meeting Brooke Henderson, my neighbor, at the end of our block, just like we always do on weekdays. We walk to school together every day, and have since we were in grade school.

She’s been my friend forever. She’s small, with long dark hair and big brown eyes, and she might be the one person in this world that I’d do almost anything for.

“Hey,” she says with a big smile as I wait for her on the sidewalk. Her smile is my favorite. It reaches all the way to her eyes and lights up her whole face. “I’m not ready for Mr. Koch’s math test today. I’m just so bad at it.” She loops her arm through mine and offers me a bite of her breakfast burrito, which I happily accept. “Do you have any finals today?”

“Just English.” I pass her burrito back and cringe when we walk down a curb. It makes my ribs sing in agony.

“Are you okay?” she asks, staring up at me with worried brown eyes, and I want to tell her everything. How he screams at both my mom and me for hours. How he used to smack her around, but now he’s decided to move on to me.

But I can’t because I’m afraid she’ll never look at me the same way again, and I couldn’t stand that.

“I’m fine,” I lie. “Just didn’t sleep a lot.”

“I sleep like the dead,” she says. “I slept until noon on Sunday. Noon! That can’t be normal.”

“It’s probably normal.” I don’t think I’ve ever slept until noon. My dad would never permit it.

“We have to hurry.” She picks up the pace, and I want to moan as my ribs cry out from keeping up with her. “I want to get to class early to get some math help.”

“You know I’ll help you whenever you want.”

“Well, come on. I’ll take you up on it.”

* * * *

Three years, and I’m done.

That motherfucker put his hands on me for the last time yesterday. Just before graduation, he pulled me into his bedroom and kicked me in the ribs until I was sure I’d cough up blood. Trying to defend myself only makes it much worse.

As usual, my mom cried, and begged for him to stop, but it didn’t do any good.

I’m eighteen. I have a car, and about a thousand dollars that I hid away over the past two years from my job. I begged Mom to go with me, to leave him and this good-for-nothing town and make a new start.

She refused.
From New York Times Bestselling Author Kristen Proby comes the newest installment in her beloved Big Sky Series…
Jenna Hull owns and manages vacation rentals in her hometown of Cunningham Falls, Montana. She’s just completed the construction of her most exhausting project, the one she’s put her heart and soul into. The inviting, opulent Snow Wolf Cottages are the first ski in/ski out tree houses in the world.
Her biggest dream is about to come true, and she can’t let anything distract her.
Christian Wolfe is Hollywood’s it actor. If the magazines are to be believed, he’s the sexiest man on earth. He’s preparing for the biggest movie role of his life, and his agent has booked him in a hot new ski lodge in Montana, tucked away from crazy fans. He can’t wait for the break.
But what Christian isn’t prepared for is Jenna. With a face that could easily co-star with him in a movie and her ambition to put her stamp on Cunningham Falls, he can’t stay away. But even more intriguing than her beauty is the fact that she’s not at all impressed with his celebrity status, only turned on by the man behind the fame.
The love they’ve found is perfect—but time is running out before real life intrudes. Can they survive with both their dreams—and hearts—intact?

“DO YOU HAVE YOUR shit figured out?”

Luke Williams is sitting across from me in a restaurant in downtown Seattle, where he summoned me a week ago. I just flew in this morning, on his private jet, to meet with him. I cleared my full schedule for this.

No one in Hollywood says no to Luke Williams. Not if you want to succeed, that is. It seems Luke has the Midas touch when it comes to blockbuster movies, and I admit that I want to work with him. I’ve admired him for the better part of my life. Taking this meeting was a no-brainer.

“What shit would that be?” I sit back, my sunglasses still on my face, and take a sip of my room-temperature water with a squeeze of lemon. His blue eyes narrow as he watches me intently.

“I live in Seattle, not on Mars, Christian. People talk in our little world. I know you’ve had some challenges in the past few years.”

Try since I was six.

Being a child-actor-turned-adult-super-celebrity isn’t without its challenges. I’ve been smart enough to stay far away from the drugs, and most of the women. Hell, I’ve been Hollywood’s clean-cut movie star for the majority of my life, and the image has done well for me. But being in this world means that you choose distance. Loneliness. And it suddenly occurs to me that Luke might be one of the only people in the world who would understand that.

He starred in some of the most successful movies ever made about a decade ago, and despite the mega-stardom, came out of it with a happy marriage and a career that the rest of us envy.

“I’m doing all right. I won an Oscar last year.”

“Congratulations on that, by the way. You also got yourself a DUI and had a very public breakup with your girlfriend.”

He’s not smirking, he’s just watching me while stating facts that anyone who reads a tabloid would know.

“I’m doing fine,” I repeat and take off my glasses, tossing them onto the table, then pinch the bridge of my nose. “And I’m curious as to why you brought me all the way to Seattle, just to have lunch. So you could grill me about my very public private life? You could have just called.”

I expect him to smirk, but he doesn’t. He rubs his fingers over his lips before sitting forward. “You know, Christian, if you ever want to talk about anything, any of it, I’m here. I know you don’t know me well, but you can trust me.”

I believe him. Luke is fiercely private, and I trust that anything I were to say to him would remain between us. I could let my walls down with him, but I’m not sure that we’re there yet.

“Thanks for the offer,” I reply sincerely and push my hand through my hair. “I’m figuring things out.”

He’s quiet for a moment, then nods once.

“There’s a movie that I’m producing. It’s big-budget, and I think it could snag you another Oscar.”

“You could have just called my agent.”

“I could,” he replies with a shrug. “But, I wanted to talk to you in person. This isn’t an action movie like the ones I’ve been making the past few years.”

I tilt my head, my interest piqued.

“This one is based on a true story. It’s about a skier.”

“Is there a book for me to read?”

His lips twitch now. “Of course, there’s a book.”

“I don’t know how to ski,” I warn him, but he just shrugs.

“That’s fine. In fact, it might be good for you to get out of town for a while and prepare for the role, learn to ski, enjoy a change of scenery.”

“I haven’t taken the role yet.”

“I hope you will,” he says with a smile. He spends the next ten minutes selling me on the film, and when he’s finished, he writes down a figure that makes even me swallow hard.

“That’s a lot of money.”

“This is a big deal,” he replies and rests his hands on the table. “I know you need to talk to your agent and your attorney, but frankly, you’re the only actor that I’m considering for this. I want you.”

“Why?”

“You’re talented. And I think you’ll bring some grit to this role, an edge that it needs.”

“I am gritty these days,” I reply with a laugh.

“Which is better than the pretty boy you were as a teenager,” Luke adds, making me narrow my eyes. “It’s not easy to transition from a child actor to an adult one. I know that. But you’re doing it, despite the bumps in the road.”

“Thank you. I think.” He smiles, and I find myself smiling back at him. “I guess I’d better start looking for a ski resort so I can get some lessons in.”

“Excellent,” Luke replies. “Just don’t break a leg. I don’t want to have to postpone filming.”

From New York Times Bestselling author, Kristen Proby, comes the first in an all-new trilogy in her beloved Big Sky Series!
Hannah Malone loves her new town. Despite living in Cunningham Falls for five years, she’s still considered a “move in” by most of the locals, and that doesn’t bother her in the least. She’s the “new girl”, and she hasn’t regretted it for one day. This town is her sanctuary. Her home. The one place she finally fits in and feels safe after a lifetime of being different and running from the memories and a past so far away it can’t haunt her anymore.
As the newly appointed police chief, Brad Hull has the responsibility to keep his citizens safe and to maintain order. His roots in this town are deep—five generations deep, to be exact. Cunningham Falls, Montana is his town, and being a cop and protecting what’s his is his passion. Everything’s running like clockwork until a sassy redheaded doctor moves in and disrupts the order—and Brad’s focus.
She’s not just beautiful, funny, and strong. Hannah’s everything he’s been looking for in a woman. The chemistry is undeniable, and the heat in the bedroom is off the charts. Brad knew the minute he met Hannah that she was the one for him. He’s tenacious in his pursuit of her. But when the past catches up with Hannah, will Brad be able to protect her and their hearts?

Three years ago…

“WOULD YOU LIKE ANOTHER glass of champagne?” I ask Hannah, the tall red headed doctor standing next to me. We’re at an exclusive party on Whitetail Mountain, with the owner of the ski resort and all of my closest friends.

“One is enough for me,” she says with a smile, showing off her dimples. I can’t help but wonder if she has dimples above her ass as well. I’ve seen her around town since she moved here, taking a position as a doctor, and each time I see her the lust is swift and hard.

She’s sexy as fuck.

And I want her.

But I’m also a gentleman. Seeing her here was an unexpected treat.

I pass her a bottle of water and then walk with her out onto the deck where a fire is going to keep us all warm. The torch light parade is over, and people are beginning to leave. But I stand here with Hannah, leaning on the railing and watching people bustle between the two bars in the ski village.

“It’s beautiful up here,” she murmurs.

I nod and sip my bottle of water. “Do you like Cunningham Falls?”

“It’s paradise,” she murmurs and then smiles up at me. “I know it sounds corny, but that’s what I think of it. The mountains, the small town, the people. I couldn’t love it more.”

I feel the same way.

But I’ve lived here all my life, so maybe I’m biased.

“How long have you been a cop?” she asks.

“Almost fifteen years. My dad is the police chief.” I shrug. “I never wanted to be anything else.”

“Do you think you’ll be the police chief after he leaves?”

I shrug again. My application is already in for it, but who knows if I’ll get hired?

“We’ll see.” I hook her red hair behind her ear. My sister Jenna walks over to us, her coat wrapped around her shoulders.

“I’m ready to head out, Hannah. How about you?”

Hannah glances up at me. “I rode with Jenna. Looks like we’re ready to go.”

“I can give you a ride,” I offer and Jenna’s eyes widen with surprise.

“Oh, you don’t have—” Hannah begins but Jenna cuts her off.

“That’s a great idea. I have some work to do this evening anyway, so if Brad can give you a lift, that’s perfect. I’ll talk to you later!” And with that, she waves and leaves Hannah with a stunned smile on her beautiful face.

“Looks like you’re stuck with me.”

“Are you sure you don’t mind?”

I shake my head and lead her inside to gather our coats and say our goodbyes to Jacob and Grace, the hosts of the party. Once in my truck, Hannah gets comfortable in the leather passenger seat and sighs.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m tired,” she confesses. “I was at the hospital all last night, but I didn’t want to miss this party. I’m glad I came.”

“I am too.”

I concentrate on the slippery road that winds down the mountain to town. Once we’re on the main, better travelled street, I feel more comfortable. It’s been snowing heavily, and the mountain road is always tricky. But about a mile later, we come upon an accident.

“Two cars,” I mutter and slow to a stop. I immediately reach for my phone to call it in, and Hannah has leapt from the truck, moving quickly toward the car with the most damage.

Thank God it’s no one from the party.

“Over here,” Hannah calls after I shove my phone in my pocket. She’s standing by the driver’s side of a small sedan, the door open, and the young woman driver is passed out against the steering wheel. “She’s unconscious, but she’s alive. I don’t want to move her until the paramedics get here. I don’t know what her injuries are. Will you stay with her while I check the other car?”

“No need,” someone says from behind us. “I’m fine. My God, I couldn’t stop the car when I went into a full spin.”

“It’s okay,” Hannah says, turning around and immediately taking her scarf off and pressing it to a bloody gash on the man’s forehead. “Hold this to your head. You have a small laceration there.”

“I do?”

“He’s in shock,” she says to me, just as we hear the sirens coming in the distance. “Paramedics are on the way,” she says to him and urges him to sit on the snow bank, holding the scarf to his head.

The young woman is coming to, and when she looks around, she starts to cry.

“It’s okay,” I say and rub my hand up and down her arm soothingly. “You’ve been in an accident, but help is on the way.”

The next ten minutes are a blur as the ambulance arrives. Hannah rattles off a quick report of what happened and the paramedics load both of the injured drivers inside, then heads to the hospital. I stay an extra five minutes to help the officers on scene, and when Hannah and I are back in my truck, she says, “Take me to the hospital.”
