One

Heath

The first week was a blur because I purposely blocked it out.

I felt like shit—worse than shit.

At week two, I still felt like a bag of broken bones, but there was major improvement from the week before. I could get through the night without waking up in pain. I could walk without wincing. I could carry myself like a man, make myself a sandwich without relying on Catalina to do it for me.

But I still had a long road ahead of me.

I walked into the living room a few weeks after coming home and saw Balto sitting there, his elbows on his knees as he watched the TV.

“You just come and go as you please now?” I didn’t walk at my usual pace, taking my time getting from one spot to the next, feeling the ache of my broken ribs on my right side. I made jokes to Catalina about the whole thing, but I’ve never been in so much pain…and I would never tell her.

Balto looked up at me, his eyes narrowed. “Now you know how it feels.”

I opened the cabinet and grabbed the bottle of vodka.

“Catalina isn’t here, is she?”

I poured it into a glass. “No. She’s out.”

“Just because she’s not here doesn’t mean you’re going to get away with that.”

I looked at him over my shoulder.

He nodded. “Put it back, Heath.”

“Come on. One glass—”

“Put it back, or I’ll tell her.”

I rolled my eyes and did as he asked. “Fucking tattletale…” I shoved everything back into the cabinet and grabbed a glass of water instead. “I’d offer you something, but if I can’t drink, neither can you.”

“That’s fine with me.”

I lowered myself to the other couch, groaning with the movement.

“How do you feel?”

“Better.” I rested my cheek against my curled knuckles, looking at the TV in front of me. I was used to being shirtless all the time, but since I looked so terrible, I tried to hide it from Catalina. My face was better, starting to resemble my old features. “So, how’s the office?”

“You made Vox a blood traitor?” he asked.

“Oh yeah.” I dragged my fingers across my jawline, feeling the shadow of hair because I hadn’t shaved in weeks. My skin burned slightly at the touch. “Forgot about that.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve got a lot more on my mind—”

“No. Why did you mark him as a traitor?”

“Because he organized a coup with Damien.”

Balto never told me how to run the Skull Kings or lead. He bowed out and let me have the reins without question. But judging by the expression on his face, he didn’t agree with that at all. “You should have killed him, Heath. That’s a killable offense.”

“I know. But I’d just shot one of the guys…wasn’t popular at the time. I thought that would redeem me—and it did.”

Balto didn’t agree. “He’s going to keep coming after you—”

“The reason he’s difficult is because he wants the throne for himself. Now that he can’t possibly have that—ever—there’s not much point anymore.”

“Or he’s going to kill you for taking away the one thing he actually cares about.”

I shrugged. “Balto, it’s done. Nothing we can do about it now.”

He shook his head slightly as he rubbed his palms together.

“No one has figured out it’s you and not me?”

“No.”

“Wow. I’m not sure if that’s flattering or insulting.”

He watched the TV for a while. “Your ban on slavery is unpopular, even though it seems to be transitioning as well as it possibly could. But you stopped taking money from Damien, and they’re starting to ask questions. Are you going to resume that?” He turned back to me.

“No.”

His eyes narrowed again.

“I’m not sure where we stand right now, but I’m not going to undo all the work I did by pissing him off again.”

“And how will you explain that to the men?”

“Why do I have to explain anything at all?” I snapped.

He rubbed his palms together again. “A good leader rules with respect, not fear.”

“I’m not threatening them. I just don’t need to explain this.”

“Do they know about Catalina?”

“Only Steel does.”

“Well, if they ever figure out you made all these changes because of a woman…” He bowed his head and looked at the floor. “That’ll be bad news. They pull the throne out from underneath you.”

I didn’t know what to feel. I was relieved that I’d called Heath before it was too late, that his heart was still beating when he took my call, that he was still the strong man who looked into my eyes as if there’d never been anyone else.

But I hated myself for what I did to Damien.

My own fucking brother.

I betrayed him. I betrayed my family.

For what, exactly? For sex? For some man I vowed never to love?

I sat against the headboard with my knees to my chest, the phone beside me, the screen dark. I was too nervous to turn on the TV or open my device to read. I chose to sit in the dark and wait for any subtle sound in the hope he would approach my door any moment…safe and sound.

Then I heard it, distant and faint, the heavy footsteps of a man coming down the hallway. The only reason I noticed was because I listened for it, waited to hear the sound. There was no one else awake at this time of night, so there wasn’t any noise from my neighbors, no cars passing on the street outside my window.

Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me, but I jumped out of bed and headed to the front door anyway. I unlocked all the bolts and swung the door open, hoping to see that man on my doorstep.

And he was.

He took the last few steps to my doorway, his blue eyes focused on mine, not blinking, not sharing a single thought. He didn’t seem angry, happy, anything. He was just…cold.

I was so happy to see him that tears formed in my eyes. But I had to ask something first. “Is Damien okay?”

He cocked his head slightly, as if the question offended him, as if he was annoyed I felt I had to ask at all. “Yes.”

“Thank god.” I stepped into his chest and wrapped my arms around him, my cheek moving to his heartbeat so I could feel it thump against my body. My ears could listen to it beat, listen to the way it was so slow and steady.

His hand slipped into my hair while his arm wrapped around my waist. He backed me into the apartment so we wouldn’t be in the hallway any longer. His foot kicked the door shut behind him. He held me tight in front of the door, his fingertips lightly playing with my hair as I continued to grab on to him, to feel my aching heart start to heal now that he was there in the flesh. That was the hardest decision I’d ever had to make, and now that I was deliriously relieved by his return, I realized I had made the right one.

“Let’s go to bed,” he whispered into my hairline before he released me. It was almost five in the morning, so he was probably tired after the long day and night he just had. His fingertips slid down my cheek before they finally broke contact.

Then I was cold.

He entered my bedroom and got undressed. His shirt fell to the floor along with his jeans. His phone and wallet were left on the nightstand next to the right side of the bed he had subtly claimed as his.

We got into bed, and once we were under the sheets, I snuggled into his side, my head preferring his shoulder as a pillow, my arm gripping him like he was a teddy bear and not an enormous, hard man. My leg tucked between his, and I closed my eyes, my anxious heart finally slowing down now that the worst was over.

A quiet breath escaped his lips as his fingers gently slid into my hair, his lips near my forehead. His arm moved over mine, his fingers interlocking with mine on his stomach. There was never a time when he walked through the door and didn’t want me. That was usually his only reason for coming at all. But now, sex seemed to be the last thing on his mind, either because he was too tired or just didn’t care about it at the moment.

That was fine with me. I just wanted him right now, to know he was alive at my fingertips.

I expected him to question me about what I did, to grin and make a smartass comment, to remind me that I broke my own promise just a few weeks after I made it.

But he didn’t.

I woke up to the sound of him getting out of bed.

The bed shifted then sprang back up once his weight had left the mattress. He was quiet as he left the bedroom, but his heavy footsteps became audible once he stepped onto the hardwood floor.

My hand reached for him even though I knew he was gone, and when I felt nothing but the warm sheets he’d left behind, I opened my eyes, my vision blurry, and saw that he was really gone. He told me he would never leave without saying goodbye, so the panic dispersed and I turned back to the clock on my nightstand to see the time.
It kept making an obnoxious sound against the wooden surface with every ring. I had no idea what time it was, but it was past midnight.

Who the hell was calling me?

When the phone stopped vibrating, I was awake enough to wipe the sleep from my eyes and sit up in bed. My eyes were still closed because they were too tired to open.

My phone vibrated again, this time with a text message.

I leaned over to grab it, my fingers fumbling in the dark until I finally got it in my grasp. I pulled it to me and blinked a couple times until my vision returned. The missed call was from Damien. And he’d also sent a text.

Liam knows.

I was half asleep, so it took me a few seconds to understand his meaning, the full significance.

The three dots popped up before he sent another message. He’s probably on his way over there now.

I let those words sink in before I called him.

He answered right away. “Annabella—”

“What happened?” My voice was hoarse because I was still so tired.

“He had a fight tonight. Hades and I were there. Then he went to the bar, and I joined him.”

“And you just blurted it out?” I asked incredulously, agitated that my precious sleep had been interrupted.

“No. I think seeing me at the bar jogged his memory, reminded him that I’d been there the night he fucked around, and he figured out that I must have told you what he did. And he also figured out why I told you…” There was no remorse or concern in his voice, as if Liam knowing the truth was completely inconsequential.

“Then what?” Knowing Liam, he tried to kill Damien on the spot.

“We had words…and I left.”

“He didn’t fight you?” I asked in surprise.

“He was too drunk. But he threatened to kill me later…”

I knew my life had just become complicated. Liam had been easier to deal with when he had no idea who my mysterious lover was. But now that he knew…our lives were about to change.

“He’s probably on his way over there—”

Heavy fists immediately beat on the door, making a noise so loud that Damien heard it over the phone.

Liam continued to bang like an angry gorilla. “Open this fucking door, or I’ll break it down.”

Damien stayed calm. “I’m just down the street. I’ll be there—”

“I can handle him.” I kicked the sheets back and got out of bed.

“He’s been drinking—”

“I’m gonna have to deal with him, regardless, Damien. He’s not the kind of man to let anything go.” I pulled on my sweatpants and turned on the lamp. “Go home. I’ll call you when he leaves.”

“Annabella—”

I hung up and put the phone on do not disturb.

Liam had started to slam his body into the door in an attempt to break it down.

“Jesus…” I jogged to the front door. “Liam!”

He stopped trying to bulldoze it. “Open this fucking door—”

“Geez, give me a second. I was asleep.” I undid the chain and the locks and opened it. There was already a crack in the wood where he’d smashed his shoulder into it. I sighed in annoyance and looked at him, not afraid of the ring of fire in each eye. He looked like a psychopath that had shown up on my doorstep to kill me, like something out of a scene from a horror movie.

He stared at me with so many emotions, from rage to sadness and everything in between. He breathed so hard that his heavy breaths were louder than a siren. Now I wasn’t the woman he loved. I was the person who’d played him for a fool, stabbed him in the back. He entered my apartment and forced me back before he slammed the door shut behind me.

I crossed my arms over my chest, not giving in to the intimidation. “Yes?”

He took another deep breath. “Looks like Loverboy got to you before I did.” He stepped forward again, pushing me farther back just because he could. “What the fuck, Anna?” He was growling, acting like the predator about to break the neck of its prey. “You let me deal with that guy every fucking day? You let me do business with him while he was fucking my wife?”

“Ex-wife,” I snapped. “I’m not the cheater, Liam.” I shoved my forefinger hard into his chest. “That’s you.”

He grabbed my wrist and threw it aside. “I’m the cheater?” He stepped forward again, forcing me back once more. When my ass hit the back of the couch, I couldn’t move any farther. I was stuck. He placed his large hands on the top of the couch, boxing me in like a prison guard. “You were spending all that time with him, every single fucking day.” Atomic bombs exploded in his gaze. “I was your rebound because he didn’t want you, and we were dining with him, drinking with him, and forming a friendship, while you all laughed at me.” He leaned down so his face was right in front of mine. “And you have the balls to say I’m the reason this marriage failed?” His nostrils flared, and he glared. “Fuck you, Anna.” Spit sprayed from his lips onto my face. “Fuck. You.” He dropped his arms and stepped back. “You used me. You betrayed me. And you’re the cancer that killed us. You act like I’m a piece of shit, when you’re the biggest cunt in the whole fucking world.”
I had a scotch on the rocks, not my usual choice, but they were out of vodka.

Balto stared at me with a rigid expression, his large size blocking out a portion of my view because he had burly shoulders and his body was a thick mass. Whenever he grabbed his drink, he always used his left hand, and on his ring finger was the skull diamond identical to my own. “How’s Vox behaving?”

“I thought you didn’t care about that shit anymore?” When Balto handed over the reins, he’d washed his hands clean and wanted nothing to do with his former business. He never asked questions, never got involved, said he was a retired man.

“I care about the men staging a coup against my brother.”

“Not gonna happen.” I had eyes and ears everywhere, spies against spies. Vox wasn’t silent about his distaste for the new leadership, obviously finding Balto’s decision incredibly biased. Vox was a brutal man, a soldier who had the cruelty that was required in leadership. He probably would’ve made a good leader.

But too bad, because it was me.

“Don’t be arrogant. Never be arrogant.”

“You’re the most arrogant man I know,” I said with a laugh.

“I’m retired. I can afford to be headstrong.” He lifted his hand and pointed at me. “You can’t.”

Not too many rulers could get advice from their predecessors like I could. Former Skull Kings usually handed over their titles when they died. Balto’s retirement was unconventional. But now, I always had an experienced mind to give me advice, not that I needed it much.

“And Damien?”

That man was a goddamn joke. He’d pissed me off when he pretended to be too good to submit, but then he got my brother mixed up in the bullshit and that just made me angrier. Then he had the audacity to threaten me, again, when I was the one who let his sister go.

In his defense, he had no idea about Catalina. “He’s a pain in the fucking ass.”

“Still?” Balto eyed me incredulously, mirroring my reactions because of his identical features. “How can the man still be a problem? Your job is to eliminate problems. Why is this guy still walking around and breathing?”

“You were the one who saved his ass.” I took a drink, the ice cubes sliding and tapping against my lips. I let the booze wash down my throat and into my stomach, the usual burn absent because I’d been drinking hard for so many years.

“I owed him. What kind of man would I be if I didn’t honor my debts?” His arms rested on the table, and his shirt was tight on his muscular arms. He wasn’t the leader of an underground army anymore, but he kept his remarkable fitness at the same level as if he was still in charge.

“You never told me how he saved your life.”

“Doesn’t matter. Deal’s over.”

My brother wasn’t much of a talker. I was definitely more of a conversationalist. “How’s the wife?”

He gave me a glare.

“What? I’m not asking because she’s hot.” I loved to get under my brother’s skin, push his buttons, and talking about his brunette woman sitting at home was the best way to accomplish that.

His blue eyes darkened noticeably as his fingertips rested on the rim of his glass. He stared me down like he wanted to slam my face into the surface of the table. But, of course, he never did anything, because I was his flesh and blood. “She’s fine.”

“Shouldn’t your wife be more than fine?”

“Shut the fuck up, Heath.”

I leaned forward. “Maybe I could teach you some moves. Maybe you’ve gotten a little rusty—”

He slammed his glass down. “I will break this into shards and shove them into your eyes.”

I raised both hands in a form of a mocking surrender and leaned back. “Alright…just trying to help.”

A babe in a short dress came to our table, her eyes on Balto first. “Hey, I’m Tess.”

My brother became a committed and monogamous man when he met Cassini, which was fascinating because he used to be deep between a woman’s thighs every night of the week. He was either at the whorehouse or at the bar, picking up a new woman for entertainment. But ever since he settled down, he didn’t look, didn’t even glance, at someone other than his wife. That was exactly what he did now as he rejected her. “I’m married.” He brought his glass to his lips and took a drink, his eyes still on me.

Tess looked at me next. “Please don’t tell me you’re married too.”

I patted my thigh. “Nope. Come on down, sweetheart.”

She smiled as she moved into my lap, her arm circling my neck. “I prefer the tattoos anyway…”
She chuckled at my sarcasm. “Where do you want to go?”

“You know I’m not picky.” I grabbed my coat and walked out of the hotel with Sofia. Christmas was over, and now it was just bleak and cold winter. Liam and I had spent our first month together as husband and wife on good terms, never mentioning Damien again. Being married felt different from living together, but it didn’t feel the same as our first marriage. Instead of passionate with unbridled love, it was more comfortable. But that was exactly what I wanted.

“So, how’s married life?” Sofia asked. “Still like each other?”

“Yeah. It’s nice to leave my apartment and move into my old place. We’ve fallen into our old routine, where we trade off making dinner and doing the dishes. You know, typical marriage stuff.”

“Have you guys thought about trying to have a family again?”

After what happened last time, I was terrified to even bring up the subject. Having a family wasn’t on my mind. “I think we’d rather just enjoy each other for a while before considering that.”

“Good idea.” Her phone rang in her pocket, so she fished it out. “It’s Hades. I’ve got to answer.”

“I understand.”

“Hey,” she said as she answered. “I’m walking to Angelini’s for lunch. No, it’s not too cold to walk.” She rolled her eyes. “You want to join us?” She turned to me to ask if it was okay.

I immediately answered. “Of course.”

She turned back to the phone. “I’ll see you there in a couple minutes.” She hung up and returned the phone to her pocket. “I’m glad you don’t mind that Hades tags along.”

He was kinda my boss since he also owned the hotel, but he was also a nice guy…as far as I could tell. “I don’t mind at all.” Sometimes when I was around him, I thought about Damien, but I couldn’t let that bother me. It was impossible to avoid Hades, and it wasn’t his fault that he reminded me of his best friend. It wasn’t like I ever saw Damien in the flesh.

We continued to talk for the rest of the walk. This restaurant was farther away than other choices, but it was the best, so we pushed through the cold until we stepped inside the restaurant. After we checked in with the host, we spotted Hades sitting at the table—with Damien.

Sofia quickly turned to me so they couldn’t see her expression. “Shit, I had no idea—”

“It’s fine.” My heart leaped into my throat and my pulse was manic, but I played it cool. I didn’t want to see Damien, but it was impossible to expect to always avoid him. He was bound to show his face at events, birthday parties, stuff like that. I just had to be mature about it, to hold my head high even though he’d rejected me…how many times?

“You sure?” she asked, keeping her voice low.

“Yes. We’re both adults. I don’t hate him, and I can’t imagine why he’d hate me.”

“Alright.” She squeezed my wrist for support before she headed to the table. She was in front of me, so she blocked my view of the guys.

Hades stood up to greet his wife, his eyes filling with an intense look of love for both her and the little person inside her. His arms wrapped around her, and he gave her a gentle kiss on the lips, greeting her as if he hadn’t seen her just a few hours ago.

Now I had a full view of Damien.

He sat in the chair with one ankle resting on the opposite knee, looking like a catch in that tailored suit. He was relaxed, but his ripped body still stretched the crispness of the fabric in the sexiest ways, over his broad shoulders, his thick biceps, even his forearms. Judging by the slight surprise in his eyes, he hadn’t expected me to be there. His green eyes only reacted for an instant, a flicker of dilemma, but he quickly covered it, adopting a skilled poker face.

He didn’t say anything.

Neither did I.

I didn’t want it to be awkward every time we saw each other, to think about the last time we had been in the same room together, when I’d admitted I would leave Liam that instant if Damien still wanted me. It was embarrassing to be so hung up on someone who didn’t give a damn about you. But it was over…and it was time to move on.

Damien spoke first. “It’s nice to see you, Annabella.” He rose from his chair and flattened his tie against his hard chest, the touch reminding me exactly how that felt with my own hand. I used to press my palm against the spot all the time, loving that strong heartbeat in that powerful cage. He moved to the chair across from him and pulled it out for me—like a gentleman.
Most of the buildings around us were dark because tenants kept their curtains shut and kept to themselves. Florence was a beautiful city, but everyone knew it was plagued by monsters like me. As long as they minded their own business, they knew they were safe.

Maddox stood beside me, in a long-sleeved shirt and dark jeans. He never wore a watch or any other kind of jewelry. He was slender and ripped, possessing a strong physique that wasn’t burdened by a mass of muscle. The time I’d spent with him had yielded even less information about his character. He didn’t have a concrete personality. Some days he was talkative, and other days he didn’t say a single word. We’d combined our men together, like a sick blended family. As we waited for our accomplice to arrive, he turned his gaze on me. With his crystal-blue eyes, he stared at me with a burning gaze that was as cold as frostbite. There was no emotion in his eyes, just light intrigue.

I refused to show intimidation or fear. This man had taken away everything that mattered to me. I won’t allow him to take control of my emotions too. I turned my head in his direction and met his look with stoicism.

He took a step closer to me. “We’ve made a lot of progress, huh? I knew the two of us would clean up this country.”

The only rule he’d given me was not to assassinate him. That meant I could be as standoffish as I wanted. I didn’t have to like him; I didn’t have to respect him.

He never seemed to care about how much I hated him. He was either immune to it or oblivious. “Shouldn’t be much longer now…unless he has a death wish.” He turned back to the road and waited for the car to arrive.

A minute later, a black SUV parked in the middle of the street, and our distributor got out of the back seat and walked toward us. He had five men with him, but the protection was obsolete considering all the men we had positioned around the area.

Maddox glanced at me again. “About time, right? I thought I was gonna miss high tea.”

I hated this motherfucker.

Richard walked toward us, with skin deeply tanned by the unforgiving sun. His thick, curly black hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and he had extra weight around his waist. He walked up to us with a stony expression on his face. “I’m only here tonight as a courtesy. But I won’t change my mind.” He was a distributor who had the only way into the Middle Eastern countries. He had all the soldiers and the government on payroll, so it didn’t matter how war-torn the country was, he could make it happen.

“And why won’t you change your mind?” Maddox asked. There was always a slightly cheerful tone to his voice, a contradiction to the seriousness on his face. It was impossible to figure out his feelings at any point in time.

Richard paused as he stared at Maddox, clearly swallowing his frustration. “There are new regulations. There are airstrikes happening as we speak. It’s dangerous, reckless. Now is not the best time.”

Maddox started to pace slowly, one hand in his pocket and the other rubbing his jawline. “The entire population is under siege. They are stuck in a country they can’t escape, and all the asylum countries are rejecting refugees. It sounds like they are prisoners to their own terrible demise.” He stopped and turned back to Richard. “It sounds like high-quality meth is exactly what they need.”

I could detect the threat in Maddox’s tone even though he didn’t do anything visibly threatening. My eyes glanced back and forth between Maddox and Richard. Maddox did business differently than I did. It was more extreme, but also more effective.

Richard spoke again. “If I’m caught, I’ll be decapitated.”

Maddox shrugged. “Hasn’t that always been a possibility?”

“Yes.” Richard glanced at me before he kept talking. “But the laws have changed. They are searching everything that comes into the country. Tensions are high. I can’t just pay off everyone.”

“You can if you pay them enough.” Maddox returned to my side. “Let’s make this happen, Richard. I’ve got two thousand kilos just for you. Be a rich man and make me a rich man.”

Richard shook his head. “The answer is no…at least for now. I came in person tonight in the hope we can continue this business relationship at a later time.”

Out of nowhere, Maddox began to laugh. It was genuine, like he’d just remembered something hilarious. It was almost a shrieking sound, the noise of an animal dying. Then he stopped abruptly. “It’s now or never.” He suddenly turned ice-cold, making the air around us vibrate with hostility. “You’re going to do this, or I’ll decapitate you right here in the street.” He snapped his fingers and motioned to one of his men, who brought him a large samurai sword. He’d prepared for this before even meeting Richard, which made it even creepier. Maddox stood with the blade slung over his shoulder, looking almost like a lumberjack. It was comical but terrifying.
I held the folder of papers in my hand and left my office to head down the hallway. My footfalls were heavy on the hard wood, and my shoes were stiff because they were new. There was a slight squeak in the air, but since they were hand-picked by my designer, I ignored the sound.

His door was cracked at the end of the hallway, and as I got closer, the old rush of feelings returned.

Rage.

Ferocity.

Bitterness.

Resentment.

I hated that fucking asshole.

I walked inside when he was on the phone, noticing his wedding ring on his left hand and the watch Sofia gave him. I assumed my old birthday gift had disappeared in the bottom of a garbage can a year ago.

The last time we had a real conversation was when I told him to fuck off and have a good life. We were civil as much as possible, communicating at the bare minimum to get shit done. I tossed the folder on his desk. “These are my numbers for the week.”

Hades stared at me with the phone to his ear. “Baby, I’ll be home in an hour.” He put the receiver on the base and stared at me like I was the bad guy who’d interrupted his extremely important conversation. “Alright.”

It was his turn to do the business accounting, but judging by his attitude, he didn’t want to waste time handling that shit. “I did it last time. It’s your problem.”

His eyes showed his annoyance, but he didn’t argue.

I walked out again and didn’t bother closing the door to the position he liked. Just looking at his face made me want to explode like a volcano. I’d never had a breakup so bitter, a falling-out that landed so hard. Sometimes I thought about leaving the bank just to rid myself of him.

But there was too much money on the table.

My assistant caught up with me in the hallway. “Sir, I have a client who needs to see you.”

I held up my arm and looked at my Omega watch. “It’s almost five. I’m leaving.”

“She said it’s urgent.”

I’d had a really shitty day and didn’t want to deal with any more bullshit. I still had a long night ahead of me at my second job. But my clients were big and powerful, and if it was urgent, it was truly urgent. “Fine. Name?”

“Annabella De Luca.”

“Alright. Send her in.” I went to my office and sat in front of my computer. Her name didn’t ring a bell, so I had to look her up in my system to see what kind of funds she had. She couldn’t be that important. Otherwise, I’d recognize her name.

When I finally located her in the system, it was clear that her husband was the one who made all the money.

A shit-ton of money.

I didn’t recognize him either, so he must be a Hades client.

She walked in a second later, wearing a long-sleeved purple dress with over-the-knee black boots. With curled brown hair that reached past her chest and full lips that looked like pillows, she was not at all what I expected.

Sexy.

She was one of those women who spent a great deal of time perfecting her features, wearing the perfect makeup, styling her hair every morning even though she had to get up at the crack of dawn, and clearly hitting the weights to have an ass like that.

Fuck, I needed to focus.

She approached my desk with her black purse hanging in the crook of her elbow. “Damien, Annabella.” She stuck out her hand to shake mine.

It took me a second to process her professionalism because I’d already made an assumption about her character based on how fucking pretty she was. I expected her to be stupid…shame on me.

I got to my feet and took her hand. “Pleasure to meet you.”

She smiled before she dropped my hand and sat down.

After the initial high passed, I sat down again and tried to pretend she was a man. “How can I help you?”

She crossed her legs and set her purse on the table beside her. Her dress rose slightly, and the outfit was provocative in those boots. The skin of her thigh was lightly tanned and clearly toned. “An apartment that I love has opened up, and if I want to secure it, I need to wire the money tonight. So, thank you for seeing me at the last minute. I appreciate it.”

Why was she buying an apartment? “I treat my clients like family. I’m happy to help you.” I turned back to my computer. “How much money are we wiring for the transaction?” I found it odd that her husband wasn’t here and that she didn’t mention him, but my clients came here because of our discretion.

“Fifty thousand euros.”
His maid tried to talk to me, ask if I was staying for dinner, but I ignored her and sprinted up the stairs. I let myself into his bedroom and walked inside to the sight of him clean from a recent shower.

Damien stood in his sweatpants, his hair flat and wet. “What the hell are you—”

“Maddox has Sofia.” Both of my lungs burst like balloons just from saying those words, admitting the truth out loud. My knees wanted to buckle underneath me and let me collapse to the floor. Instead of being livid someone had crossed me, which was my typical response, I was too broken to feel anything but unimaginable pain.

I couldn’t think about what he was doing to her—because I might kill myself.

When Damien had processed what I said, his bad temper disappeared and his shoulders dropped with devastation. “What?” His voice came out as a painful whisper, as if he were just as haunted by the revelation. “What are you talking about? Hasn’t she been home this entire time?”

“I don’t know how the fuck it happened, but it happened.”

“Are you sure she’s not—”

“No, asshole. He called me.”

His eyes closed for a moment. “Shit.”

My shaky legs couldn’t hold me up any longer. I fell into the armchair next to the table. I couldn’t even make myself a glass of scotch because I wouldn’t be able to keep the drink steady. I was shaking with rage, trembling with agony.

Damien stepped closer to me, his face blank because he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard.

I leaned forward with my elbows on my knees, my hands planted against my mouth.

Damien stood there for a while, ingesting the painful silence around us. After he went through the same emotions I had already experienced, he fell into the chair beside me. He sighed quietly, his fingers brushing through his damp hair. “We’ll get her back, Hades.”

“How?” My voice was so deep, I sounded demonic. “I have no idea where the fuck he is. I don’t even know how long he’s had her. If I knew where he was, I’d be there right now.” I covered my face with my hands, feeling the tears burn behind my eyelids. I’d never cried as an adult, not even as a teenager, but now I was a pile of uncontrollable emotions. I knew I loved Sofia, but until that moment, I had no idea how deep my devotion ran.

“We’ll figure it out.”

“We’ve never been able to figure it out before,” I spat.

“This time, we will.”

“But it won’t be quick enough to stop him before…” My voice cracked from the emotion, and I shut my eyes so I wouldn’t have to picture what he would do to her, what he would do to my wife. I’d rather die by a knife to the gut than let that happen to her.

Damien was silent, just as disturbed as I was. He wouldn’t dare mock me for my tears, for being a man with emotions.

I couldn’t believe this was happening. I wanted to punch myself in the face in the hope I would wake up from this nightmare.

“There’s no trade we could make?” he asked. “There has to be something he wants.”

“No…” Because there was nothing better than her. She was the highest prize, the best way to hurt me, the best way to torture me. “My only hope is to steal her back…and kill that motherfucker.”

“We’ll figure it out, Hades. One way or another, we will.”

I leaned back in the chair and sniffed loudly. The back of my hand absentmindedly wiped away my tears.

“I’m sorry…” Damien’s voice broke with an audible choke.

All of this happened because of him—because he didn’t fucking listen to me. “The only reason that I haven’t killed you is because I need you. Everything that is happening to Sofia is your fault. Her blood and tears are on your hands.” I turned my gaze toward him to look him in the eye. “I lost my wife because of you, and even if we get her back, I’ll never forgive you.”

2

Sofia

I was on the second story of a large house, somewhere in the middle of western Tuscany. Once I’d been transported to the location, I was thrown into a bedroom. The large windows were barred shut, and the bedroom door was impenetrable.

I sat on the bed, leaned up against the headboard, my knees pulled to my chest. My arms were crossed over my stomach, and I kept my eyes on the door. I wasn’t in a grungy cell, but I knew I was a prisoner all the same. It was only a matter of time before Maddox came for me, either to kill me—or to do something worse.

I hadn’t cried or showed any emotion yet. I was doing my best to stay strong, to convince myself that Hades would find a way to get me back. I recalled him saying he could never track down Maddox, that the man was impossible to trace.

I worked at the hotel, went home to my mom’s impatient stares, and tried to pretend that my life wasn’t about to change forever.

Hades didn’t come to the hotel and catch me by surprise. He didn’t stop by to leave any paperwork for me either. He just stayed away until I addressed the situation.

I was sitting on the main balcony with a cup of coffee in hand, wondering how different my life would have been if I were born into a normal family. Being rich wasn’t worth all the stress. It wasn’t worth being manipulated like this.

Mother was seated beside me, a cup of tea in her hand. “You’re out of time, Sofia.”

“I’m not doing it.”

She sighed as she looked straight ahead. “We can have the same conversation again, but it’s not going to change anything. This will happen whether you like it or not. If you don’t want Hades, we’ll find someone else. But truth be told, I don’t think you’re going to find anyone better than him.”

“You don’t know him.”

“I know he’s been keeping everything together at the hotel since Gustavo died.”

“Uh, no. That’s been me.”

“Honey…there’s a lot of stuff that happens behind the scenes that you don’t know about. Hades does the dirty work and doesn’t complain.”

My eyes drifted down to my coffee.

“You’re going to talk to him.”

The idea of looking at him made me sick to my stomach. The years had only escalated our mutual hatred. I still remembered the night he picked up that model and made out with her right in front of me. It was low…really low. But it wasn’t as painful as the time he bumped into me in the hallway and threatened me if I ever spoke to him again. “No.”

“Well, he’s here.”

“Jesus.” I set my cup down. “You’ve got to be kidding me—”

“I’ll leave you two alone.” She leaned toward me and patted my hand gently.

I didn’t want to face him—and now I didn’t even have time to prepare.

My mother walked away, her shoes echoing on the pavers until she was inside.

I felt the breeze move through my hair as I watched the summer sun sink below the horizon. I was rigid from his presence, aware he was right behind me, staring at the back of my head. Once I faced him, the conversation would begin…and I didn’t want that.

His slow footsteps were audible as he approached the edge of the balcony. He stopped beside me, a couple feet away so he didn’t invade my space.

I could see him in my peripheral vision, see his dark jeans and his black t-shirt. My pulse was so strong in my neck that I thought the artery would burst open. I wasn’t sure if I was scared or nervous…or both.

He was silent, waiting until I was ready for the conversation before he spoke his mind.

I couldn’t run from this. Just like any other problem, I had to face it. I had to grow a backbone and stand my ground. If I let him intimidate me, then it would prove my mother right…that I did need someone to protect me.

I finally got to my feet, lifted my chin, and looked at his side profile. “I had nothing to do with this—”

“I know.” He turned to me, his muscular arms resting by his sides. He was the same strong man that he had been when we were together, still painfully beautiful, still so masculine that he was made of pure testosterone.

I crossed my arms over my chest, feeling awkward because we hadn’t spoken even a few sentences since we’d broken up, since the night he’d asked me to marry him. Now we were both reliving that memory, both thinking the same thing. “Why would you even want this? You could have anyone you want. Why me?”

His eyes narrowed slightly as he considered what I said. The sky was a mixture of purple and pink behind him, and despite the unpleasant conversation, it was a lovely evening. He took his time replying, either because the answer was so obvious that he didn’t need to explain, or he was trying to find a reason.

“Are you doing this to punish me?” I whispered, afraid this was all about revenge, that he would hurt me as payback for my rejection.

His eyes narrowed farther, clearly stung. “No. I told you that’s not the kind of man I am.”

“Then why?” He couldn’t still love me. Too much time had passed. He’d been with too many women, had plenty of time to move on and forget about me.

“A lot of reasons.”

“Such as?”

“I’ve been working with Tuscan Rose for a long time, since my early twenties. I have a vested interest in its livelihood. Someone needs to oversee it. Someone needs to keep everyone accountable. Your mother said fifty percent of that hotel is now mine. That’s my biggest reason.”

Black cobras hissed at their masters when they heard the sound of the whip, men bravely shoved blades down their throats for entertainment, and gypsies danced for coins. When your donation wasn’t generous enough, they slunk behind you and picked your pockets—taking what they deserved.

It was one hell of a place to celebrate my twenty-first birthday.

Damien walked beside me, a cigar resting between his lips. When a group of pretty girls passed, he gave them mere seconds of his attention before he moved on to the next sight. Now he stared at a camel being led away by its master. “What should we do now? Get a rug and take it home?”

“Rugs are nice.” I liked Morocco because of the chaos. This city was unpredictable, from the dangerous route to the Atlas Mountains and the constant bomb checks under vehicles anytime you drove onto public property. It was a different kind of place, beautiful but unsteady.

“I’d rather spend my money on pussy—but not take it with me.”

The brothels here were exciting—and dirt cheap. “Later.” We’d spent the afternoon drinking, smoking, and exploring everything this city had to offer. It was a short flight away from Florence and an extreme change of scenery.

Damien sighed in dismay at my response. Of all the things he loved in life, pussy was his favorite. Booze and cigars were in a close tie for second. But something changed his demeanor when he turned his head and examined the bright purple tent behind the vase stand. “Fortune-teller…that’s interesting.”

“Is it?” The practice was nonsense, just a way to take your money then laugh at you on your way out.

“I’ve never done it before. Let’s check it out.” Damien puffed one last time before he threw his cigar onto the ground and stomped on it. The ashes squished under his shoe, adding to the other filth on the ground.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“What’s the harm? We’ve got nothing else to do for the next few hours.”

“Only gypsies read fortunes. She’ll learn about us then sell our information to someone so they can rob us.”

Damien rolled his eyes. “You think anyone could cross us and get away with it? Come on.”

Since I didn’t have a better plan for what to do next, I followed Damien inside the mysterious tent. Once the flap closed behind us, we were surrounded by dim lighting, the various lamps around the room giving off different colors of life. The woman sitting at the table was covered in jewels. A blue eye was one of the largest pendants that hung down from her neck. Jewels were also braided into her hair, and the rest of her brown locks were tucked underneath the shawl tied around her chin.

The woman had an array of cards in front of her, and she continued to rearrange them as if we weren’t there at all.

Damien approached the table, welcoming himself into the room like he owned it. “You want to read my fortune?”

She kept working the cards, her eyes down.

Damien stared at her, becoming increasingly annoyed by her rejection.

I noticed a table in the corner where at least a hundred candles were burning, their smells combining to form a scent filled with so much cacophony, I couldn’t even describe it. There were small vases on the ground, gold-plated with turquoise stones decorating the sides. There were several of them, all the same but, at the same time, all unique. It was the first time I’d ever seen vases in that style.

Damien eventually lost his patience. “I guess you aren’t getting paid today.” He turned around to look at me. “Come on. Let’s get the hell out of here.”

“Wait.” The middle-aged gypsy stopped playing with her cards.

Damien grinned at me, both of his dimples showing, along with his boyish charm. He turned around slowly, his arrogance rising like the scent from the candles. “That changed your tune quickly.”

She kept the same stony face, looking at Damien without blinking once. “I was studying your auras, which are quite different. They say you don’t need to speak to a man to know him. All you need to do is feel him. Now, sit.” She grabbed her cards and put them into a single deck. “What’s your name?”

Damien sat in the old wooden chair. “Aren’t you supposed to know that?”

“No. I’m supposed to read your future. In order to do that, I need some information from you.”

“My aura wasn’t enough?” he asked like a smartass.

She continued to shuffle the cards as she held his gaze. “Your aura is pungent.” She pushed a dish toward him. “Your payment.”

“How much?” He pulled the coins out of his pocket.

“Whatever you think is fair.”

Damien raised an eyebrow before tossing three coins into the jar. “Never heard that before.”

The gypsy grabbed the deck of cards and then placed them on the table, organizing them into two rows. She slowly took away cards that seemed out of place until only two were left. “Give me your palm.”
