Maybe she was waiting for me to say it, to whisper those words to her when she least expected it. That wasn’t going to happen, so I was glad we didn’t have to talk about it again.

I didn’t enjoy hurting her.

But I wouldn’t say it just to make her happy.

We were both asleep in the middle of the night when she became restless, kicking her feet and whimpering in her sleep. Then she jolted upright and rested her hand on her stomach. “God, do you ever stop kicking?”

My heavy eyes opened to take in her frame in the darkness. She held herself up with one arm while the other gently stroked her stomach. She breathed hard through the kicks, tensing up in a way she never had before.

I sat up and placed my hand over her stomach, but I didn’t feel any kicking. “Baby, I don’t feel anything.”

“Well, I feel pain…”

All the sleepiness left my eyes, and I shifted into action. I got out of bed and pulled on the first pair of jeans I could find. I threw on a shirt and a jacket then picked out something for her. “Baby, get dressed.”

“Where are we going?” She slowly rose to her feet, her hand still on her stomach.

“We’re going to the hospital, just to make sure everything is okay.”

“God, do you think there’s something wrong?” She grabbed the clothes I picked out for her and quickly pulled them on.

“I’m sure everything is fine, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.” I pulled out my phone and called my team to prepare the car. Then I had my security captain call the hospital before we arrived so they knew I was coming. Siena wasn’t going to wait even a minute to be seen by someone.

I helped her down the stairs and out the front door.

She kept gripping her stomach. “It hurts.”

“It’ll be alright.” I helped her into the back seat, and we finally drove off. I put the heater on full blast and then wrapped my arms around her. “I’m sure Martina is fine, Siena. Your body is going through a lot right now. Just remember that. It’s probably normal.”

“God, I hope so.” She breathed hard as she gripped her stomach. “I couldn’t handle it if something happened to her… She’s everything to me. I love her so much.” Her eyes filled with a sheen of tears.

My heart snapped in two. “I love her too. If she’s anything like either of us, she’s strong. She’ll get through this.” I held Siena close to me and brushed my lips along her hairline. I tried to do anything to keep her calm. Siena wasn’t the type of person to respond emotionally to trauma, but the pregnancy clouded her pragmatism.

“I hope so…”

We got in to see the doctor right away, and after running some tests, they determined Siena was experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions, a common occurrence in pregnant women. The contraction of the uterus was the source of her discomfort. She must have thought Martina was kicking because she was half asleep, her faculties slow.

“You’re sure she’s alright?” Siena asked as she sat back on the hospital bed, her hands on her stomach.

“Absolutely,” the doctor reassured her. “But you made the right decision coming in tonight. The contractions should stop in a few hours. Try to stay comfortable until they pass.” He walked out and left us alone in the room.

I kept a straight face because it was my job to stay calm, but the relief that washed over me almost made me weak in the knees. When she’d gripped her stomach like that, I’d feared something much worse was happening. The pregnancy had been a complete accident and I’d never wanted a kid, but Martina was such a part of our lives now, and I would be devastated if something happened to her.

Or Siena.

The tears welled up in her eyes again, wet and shiny.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” she whispered. “I’m just so happy she’s okay…”

I placed my hand in the center of hers and kissed her forehead. “Me too. At least if this happens again, we’ll know exactly what it is.”

“I hope this is a one-time thing because it’s pretty painful.”

“The doctor said it’ll pass.” I took her hand and guided her off the table. She was halfway through her pregnancy, and her belly was getting bigger with every passing week. She’d switched to maternity clothes just to stay comfortable. “Let’s get you home and in bed.”

“Okay. Thanks for getting me here so quickly. I know you arranged all that.” She grabbed her clothes from the chair and slipped out of her gown. “Whenever I get scared, I know you’ll make sure everything is okay.”

I watched her lower her shirt over her head and then pull her sweatpants up her body. Instead of admiring her figure, I focused on her side profile. The only reason I’d spared her life was because of the baby growing inside her, but now I didn’t just want to take care of Martina. I wanted to take care of Siena too, to protect both of them. “Baby, I’ll always take care of you.”
They took all my clothes and whatever essentials they thought were necessary.

I wasn’t given a choice in the matter.

My house would stand there uninhabited. Landon would eventually realize I was missing and Cato was still alive. He would probably assume I was dead until he heard the rumors that Cato was expecting a child.

He would be relieved I was alright.

Until nine months from now.

My bedroom had a private bathroom, a small living room, and a balcony that overlooked the front of Cato’s property. He owned acres of land and paid top dollar for a tall wall to surround his home, green ivy growing over the limestone. Anyone else would think they were in paradise.

I knew I was in a prison.

Cato hadn’t spoken to me in three days. He stayed in his bedroom or left the house to go to work. Realistically, he couldn’t avoid me forever, but if he had it his way, he probably would. He would just wait for me to deliver the baby nine months later without looking at me once.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my hand over my stomach. It was as flat as ever with no noticeable changes. But my hand felt life growing inside, the son or daughter I never meant to make. My birth control was still active, but doctors said it was only ninety-nine percent effective.

Perhaps Cato was that one percent.

The most beautiful thing had happened to me, and the fact that I would never get to appreciate it broke my heart. My child needed a mother. More importantly, I needed a child. I would bond with them over the next nine months, get to know them so intimately. Once they left my body, I would be both sad and happy. But then that bliss would be taken away from me.

And I would be buried six feet under.

I would never be able to change Cato’s mind. With his brother looming over his shoulder and the world thinking he was a fool, he couldn’t take back his decision.

Feeling powerless was the worst part of all this.

My face looked better now that the swelling had gone down, but the area around my eye was still blue and my lip discolored. The pain was still there most of the time, but after a week, it should be gone.

My bedroom door opened, and Cato entered, dressed in a navy suit. He didn’t knock the way Giovanni did. Just like he did at my home, he welcomed himself inside without warning. In this instance, this was his home…so he really could do whatever he wanted. With one hand in his pocket, he walked toward me, his eyes examining the bruises on my face. “Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?”

He walked out without answering me.

I slipped on my shoes and headed down the stairs to join him. He spoke to Giovanni quietly as he waited, both hands in his pockets. He towered over his butler and filled out the suit better than a mannequin.

Once I came to Cato’s side, he walked out the front door to the car that was waiting for us.

A part of me was nervous he was going to shoot me in the driveway, but the car brought me peace of mind. I got into the back seat, and we left for Florence.

Cato looked out the window and didn’t say a word to me.

“Where are we going?” I repeated.

His hand gripped his left knee, his fancy watch reflecting the summer light. He was a large man who needed a large car like this. He could barely fit inside my bed. “These nine months will be a lot smoother if you don’t talk.” He didn’t even give me the respect of looking at me when he spoke.

“I’m going to die in nine months anyway. So I may as well do what I want.”

He turned to me, his gaze vicious.

Now that a gun wasn’t pointed in my face, my resilience had returned. I’d never been the kind of woman to take shit from anybody. As long as I was immune, I wouldn’t take shit from him either. “Now tell me where we are going.”

His jaw clenched harder. “Just because I won’t kill you today doesn’t mean I won’t bust that pretty lip and blacken that other eye.”

The insult washed over me with no effect. I’d never forget the relief I felt when Cato pulled Bates off me. His fist was cruel, and if he’d hit me one more time, he would have broken my nose or cheekbone. As it was, the pain had been excruciating. Cato could have done nothing, but he protected me instead. “We both know you won’t. Don’t pretend to be something you aren’t.”

He faced forward and shook his head slightly. “You don’t know me very well.”

They've taken my father. They'll take me next unless I comply with their demands.
Taking down the most powerful man in Italy. Cato Marino.
The man is accompanied by his security team everywhere he goes. His fortress in Tuscany is impenetrable. He's the most paranoid man in the country.
And there's no possibility I'll be able to take him down alone. If I want to save my father, I only have one option. To get into Cato's bed...and stay there.
It was old, a living antique. The pipes were original, and I could hear the water running through the entire house when I flushed the toilet. There were cracks in the stone outside, and the glass in the windows was so aged that they were constantly blurry, regardless of how many times I cleaned them. It was a short distance from the city, so close that I never felt like I was really out in the middle of the Tuscan countryside, but it gave me the quiet and peace I craved. Every morning in spring and summer I could hear the birds chirping outside my window. It’d been a haven to me for a long time—since I’d turned my back on my family.

But right now, this house couldn’t protect me.

I sprinted up the wooden staircase, the creaks screaming beneath my feet as I moved as quickly as my body could carry me. There was no point in being quiet—not when they knew I was here.

“Run, bitch.” Damien led the chase, his two cronies behind him. “It’s more fun this way.” His sinister tone reached every end of the petite home, as if he were speaking over a sound system that amplified every single syllable.

“Shit.” I made it upstairs and slid across the hardwood floor toward my mattress. Tucked in between the two pieces of the bedding was the revolver I kept for emergencies. I’d disowned my family years ago, so I’d thought I would never need it.

Guess I was wrong.

I turned off the safety and prepared to shoot Damien right between the eyes. I wasn’t the kind of person who hesitated when they squeezed the trigger. It was either him or me.

It certainly wasn’t going to be me.

Damien took his time moving up the stairs, his heavy footfalls beating like the sound of steady drums. “Sweetheart, I would check that gun if I were you.” His deep voice carried down the hallway, his smile so audible I could actually see it behind my eyes.

My hands started to shake.

I opened the barrel and looked inside.

Empty.

“You’ve got to be kidding me…” They must have hit my house while I was at work, stripping away all my bullets so I would be unarmed when they came for me. It was smart on their part—because I was a good shot. “Fucking asshole.”

His laugh drifted down the hall, the sound getting louder because he was so close. He seemed to move slower the closer he approached, as if he wanted to savor this for as long as he could. He cornered me like a rat—and he wanted me to squirm.

I was no rat—and I didn’t squirm.

I opened my closet and pushed back all my shoe boxes until I found my sword—a samurai sword given to me as a gift from Kyoto. I removed the sheath and prepared the blade, ready to stab my attacker right through the neck as I’d been taught. I wasn’t a master of the sword, but I certainly knew how to stab someone.

I pressed my back against the wall and waited for Damien to walk through the open doorway.

Damien cocked his gun before he moved inside, his gun held at shoulder height. “Sweetheart, you know I love it when you run—”

I slammed my blade down fast, aiming to sever his arm right at the elbow.

Damien must have been expecting me to hide there because he dodged out of the way. “Ooh…you look pissed.”

I slashed my sword at him again.

He jumped out of the way and kept his gun aimed at my right shoulder. “And sexy.” The corner of his mouth rose in a smile that looked more like a sneer. He was enjoying this way too much. His jet-black hair flopped down in front of his face and hid some of his left eye from view. He was the top dog in the organization—because he loved his job so much.

I stabbed my sword at his gut, wanting him to bleed out all over my floor.

He backed up toward my bed. “Sweetheart, I will shoot you.”

“And I will stab you.” I put all my strength into the move, preparing to drive my sword right through his gut and into the wall behind him.

He pulled the trigger.

I didn’t feel the bullet enter my shoulder, just the jerk of my body at the momentum. My shoulder jutted back and my body shifted because the force was much stronger than my own velocity. Smoke burned from the tip of his gun. The smell was suffocating—along with that of my own blood. I dropped my sword but stayed on my feet. It was the first time I’d ever been shot, and the shock that washed over my body protected me from the pain.

I stayed on my two feet—refusing to fall.
